    Issa is Somali clan. And no, Djiboutians are actually more close to Somalia than Ethiopia.

    • @Kel3030
      @Kel3030 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Negatory on the closer to Somalia than Ethiopia part. You might be thinking of the semi autonomous region of Somaliland; even still, you're talking about tribal relations and not economic. Don't forget that Issa only make up half of the country.

    • @urbannomad9590
      @urbannomad9590 8 ปีที่แล้ว +126

      +Owen Somalia and Djibouti not only share the same ethnic group with Somalia but also history, culture, bilateral relations, etc. A lot Djiboutian men and women fight along Somalia side during the Ogaden war. Somalia also supported Djibouti independence. Even Djibouti's first president (Hassan Guleed Aptidon) was born in northern Somalia. Him and Mahmoud Harbi were pan-Somalist. They wanted to unite ethnic Somali-land as one country. The current Djibouti's president also received training from the Somali National security service.

    • @urbannomad9590
      @urbannomad9590 8 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      +Owen the Issa clan may make up half of the country's population but all ethnic Somali clans make up more than 65%. Don't forget the Gedabuursi and the Isaaq clans are also ethnic Somalis. The number of Ethnic Somalis actually grew for the last 25 years, considering a lot of them from Somalia settled in Djibouti. I would actually say more than 80% of Djibouti's population are ethnic Somalis !

    And that's why I love this channel. Any normal person outside of Africa has no idea what this tiny little country is like. And here you show us how successful this small country is with such little resources. And they are investing so much into education. Really smart. Djibouti just became my favorite African country. ...actually, it already was beforehand because I like small countries. But now that I know how it rules in da house, I like it even more :)

    Barby, it would make more sense to say 60% of Djibouti are Somali (most of whom are from the Issa clan). Not all of that 60% is Issa (there are sizable minorities from other clans). It would have made more sense to just say Somali, instead of Issa.
    Anyways, Issa (and other Somali clans) people speak Somali, and Afar people speak Afar. Neither of these languages were mentioned in the video. By the way its Somali, not Somalian.

It's more of a religious thing. And also for Djibouti French is the national language because they where colonised by the French. The majority of Djibouti speaks Somali and afar (...I know I got that last on wrong).

    I'm from Djibouti & I'd have to argue that we are only close with Ethiopia from an economic perspective. Our closest friend would have to be Somalia. The Issa you referred to isn't an ethnic group, rather a sub clan of the Somali people whom are represented by the blue section of the flag. As you mentioned, the country was titled "French Somaliland" and was actually very close to forming a union with Somalia after independence (good thing that didn't happen😳)

    Issa is NOT an ethnicity, it's a clan and they are ethnically Somali. They live in north western Somalia, Southern Djibouti and Somali region of Ethiopia. Official languages are French and Arabic but the majority of the population don't speak these languages daily or even fluently. The most spoken are Afar and Somali by far, with Somali being the common language. They don't have there own dialect of Somali either, it's just a slight regional difference, just how American English is slightly different to UK english. And though they have strong economic ties with Ethiopia they are much closer in culture and society to central and north Somalis (for ethnic Somalis) and Eritrea (for ethnic Afars). You also didn't mention any of the political tension going on or the fact that it's practically a dictatorship.

      87% of Djibouti's land is owned by ethnic Afar people. Tadjourah (Tagorri), Dekeli, Alaili Dadda, Obock, Galaafi, Yoboki are all Afar.
      The issa (which is controversial Somali clan) has the Ali Sebeh province.
      If Afar people establish a sovereign state in the triangle, Djibouti's 87% land mass will go to Afar while 13% will either join Somaliland or Ethiopia.

    actually djibouti means “path/street of the bears“. It comes from the two somali words “jiid“(street) and “buti“ (bear).
    back in the days, bears used to be common in that area and the people gave it that name, simply because of the animals living over there. Of course, they all went extinct and the only thing that remained was the name.

    It's so cool to see a youtuber make a video about my country because usually when I say to people where I come from, they just don't know. Makes me happy and weirdly proud that someone recognizes the awesomeness of Djibouti. Which I didn't know was a pun in English, shows how much language throughout the world is different. Thanks for making this great video!

    If I was a leader of Djibouti I would not rely on Ethiopia for food imports lol

      It was just a joke m8. Maybe it's a bit dated, but in my day Ethiopia was always associated with famine.

      If I was a leader of Ethiopia, I'd stop sending all my food to foreign countries. Save some for my own citizens.
