    In 171 the Roman generals Pertinax and Valerius Maximianus chased the German tribes from the Empire, with Maximianus destroying Naristi cohesion by killing their chief in single combat. The next year Marcus Aurelius, accompanied by his 11-year-old son Commodus, led the Romans across the Danube and decisively defeated the Marcomanni. Forced to accept a punitive peace, the Marcomanni became Roman clients once again.

    From what i read, heavy legionnaires were kept back until things got bad. The auxiliaries were usually the forefront soldiers

    • @grantlicari6393

      There were subdivisions in the cohort. Hastati, principes, and triarii. Hastati were the most inexperienced, principes were more battle hardened, and triarii were the most experienced. Ten cohorts made up a legion, after the Marian reform. A cohort consisted of about 480 men. The cohorts were numbered 1 through 10 and were also based on experience; 1 being the most experienced and 10 being the least. So while auxiliaries would often be at the forefront to spare legionnaires, the legionary cohorts were subdivided to try and put precedent on keeping the most experienced and battle hardened soldiers in an advantageous position to capitalize on tired opponents.

    • @craezee247

      @@grantlicari6393you are wrong, and you confuse things. The hastati/princeps/triari system was abandoned after the Marian reforms. The entire legion would have put the effort in the battle. The frontline soldiers would (ideally) be fighting for a while then changed by fresh troops in the back in a rotation system. This gave the marian legion -along with their draconic training and cardio - unparalleled staying power on the battlefield. Fresh recruits would be mixed with veterans to learn, because in the Marian legion the fresh recruit was very valuable since manpower became much more limited compared to the mandatory system of the Old Republic. When a tactical situation called for a special type of fighter (see battle of Mons Graupius) the auxiliaries would have been used in the front line, but the main ideea was not to spare legionaries as much as to obtain the best tactical advantage using the most adequate type of fighter. This type of thinking lasted from Marius to Aurelian with mostly immense success, and it was ended by Diocletian.

    • @danielefabbro822

      @@craezee247 well yes, you have to distinguish if pre or after the Marian reforms.
      But the system of using performance and in-Legion or sub-Legion units competition was kept in order to maintain discipline and performance.
      Also the first Cohor or the first Manipule of a Legion usually counted more man than the others.
      In old times during the republic, such sub-units was also tasked with the protection of the "general" (Tribunus or Consul or Legatus Legionis depending on the period) while not deployed in war.

      The romans trained their men to do something, nobody else did. They closed in, underrun the spears and turned the battle into a knife fight. they came so close to the enemy that they could stab them in the face, and than the next and the next. Alone the charge, so close, can break morale of inexperienced troops.
