  • I climbed the volcano twice on this day. You can see how much the volcano changes in just 6 to 10 hours span. All to footage is in chronological order. This is deliberately a long cut of this day with extended views into the boiling crater. Activity fluctuates over 5 to 10 minutes spans and I wanted to capture that variation. The (coming soon) narrated version will have observations and explanations and talk on being safe in an intrinsically unsafe environment.
    This was my final day on the volcano and it had changed a lot the previous day and overnight. Truly, it was a different volcano every day. But on this day, the existing route to the viewing area had been severed by running lava. Periodic eruptions gave way to a much more continuous flow.
    The first block of footage runs from about 12:30 PM local to 2 PM. I sat in the parking lot and had the amazing fish and chips from vendor at the trailhead while my batteries recharged. The construction equipment footage was shot while coming down and returning for the next session. The remaining footage is from 8 PM to 10 PM. The closing (lowest light) footage of the lava river just blows me away in 4K.

    Hi Scott, only just stumbled on your great video. I'm the guy by my self in the red jacket and red hat with a blue backpack from 10 seconds in and again from 57 seconds. What an awesome spectacle we witnessed on that day. I was humbled by the sheer power of the earth creating itself. Cheers, Andy

      Indeed. It is very difficult to explain to someone that was not there how powerful an experience it was. There is no doubt you are witnessing something stupendous.
      And I love just about everything about Iceland, except the island-nation prices.

    Awesome job with this Scott! You really pushed the envelope with your over the crater drone shots. Really spectacular footage, your long sequences just blew me away, great job!
    I wasn't as sporty and was too afraid to get my drone that close, especially with the winds the way they were. Our last night at the volcano was the night before Trail A got severed and we could see that it was close, there as so much fresh lava pushing into Geldingadalur Valley that night.
    Two thumbs up from me, great footage!

    • @yzScott
      @yzScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. For the people without drones, the 14th was a let down. There was no good ground view into the crater and eruption became much more of a constant flow. But, the view from the air was just amazing that day and getting to stand so close to fast flowing laving completely "did it" for me.
      It is a powerful experience. Amazing as the footage is that can be captured today, it still doesn't come close to encompassing the entire experience. The heat, smell, and sound... even the physical effort of getting there, all contribute. Definitely an "E-Ticket" chapter of my life.
      As to the risks with the drone... I had a strong cold wind blowing in from behind, but yeah... I would have really liked a temperature sensor on the drone to know just how much heat I was taking. I was putting in a fresh card every flight and putting the riskiest moments at beginning of flight. It was my final session before going home. I was risking zero footage I had and little future footage I might still get. I can replace a drone. And honestly, I value the footage I captured that day more than that drone. I have dazzling epic documentation of one of finest days I've ever lived. It was all well calculated at the moment, I really thought about and accepted the risk. There were other fliers, we were all checking temps as we landed. We were watching each other to see what could be gotten away with. I was pretty confident doing it, but it was still a little nervy.

      @@yzScott I have to say we really got lucky with timing. I didn’t expect Trail A to get cut off so soon and the way to shifted from the geyser bursts with those massive lava falls over the cone to the steady flow was a surprise. We were so lucky to get to see the eruptions before the switch to steady flow.
