Will's threesome was the subversion. He's the only one who actually had the stereotype Amsterdam red district experience. Everyone else had a night of reverting to some version of their inner child. Higgins with his private passion for jazz, the team fullfilling Ted's pillow fight prophecy, Roy and Jamie sharing memories from younger years and the impact on those experiences on current day, Rebecca being once again just an unknown beautiful woman being courted, without being rich and famous, Beard's time-travel to the 70s, Ted being 'home' and remembering his dad, Colin being able to be himself in front of a new friend.
Rebecca's experience was far more than being courted. She made the first real connection since the divorce. We also see another part of the reading she received with upside down, water, but she will be okay. We see a glimpse if a childs room. And we see her kind of vulnerable. No phone, no clothes which is her usual armor. She was kind of exposed. And his matter of fact type of conversation she most certainly isnt used to from men. Loved it.
This show is very economical with its lines. All lines/references later reveal significance. Jamie called Roy Granddad in S1 and now he’s teaching Roy to ride a bike “for Granddad”. So…Jamie randomly named Fault In Our Stars on the bike ride. I think it may have future importance beyond that Amsterdam was featured in the film. Also, in a recent episode Rebecca said something about someone losing all their money to a religion based scam.
Rebecca's Psychic prediction. 1) green matchbook (check) 2) shight in nining armor (check) 3) thunder and lightning and you’re upside down and you’re drenched, but you’re safe (check - falling over the railing into the water) The thunder and lightning is a call back to what Roy told her about meeting someone. Being struck by lightning.
I thought the same too back when the psychic said predicted it but where does the thunder come in? Thunderous applause maybe and she sees boat guy again?
As a Dutchman who lived half his live in Amsterdam and being an Ajax fan: The amount of respect in this episode to Amsterdam in a non typical way with overly stupid drugs and special ladies jokes but not showing it was just fantastic. And Matteo van der Grijn was funny as fuck with blunt remarks, but oh so loveable, is a very Dutch thing to do. (Or at least it's in my friendsgroup.) This is the way. Everyhing is gonna be okay. And if you do come over: more than welcome to stay at my small house 30 mins from the City Centre. We are very welcoming, but us Dutch like to know beforehand.
Someone else theorized that Boat Guy is a Dutch version of Ted. I do see a whole lot of similarities (divorced, one kid, takes care of people, cooks/bakes, dances, sings, positive outlook, sense if humor). They both even sang songs made popular by Kenny Rogers
The Arthur Bryant's BBQ Sauce is a direct nod to not only the Ted Lasso character's roots in Kansas (even though technically AB is in Missouri), but on a lot of episodes you can see Ted's MacBook desktop wallpaper is a picture of the downtown KCMO AB's location. Also, it's a nod to Jason Sudeikis' roots in Kansas IRL.
I think the Higgins and Will subplot was supposed to echo Jamie's first time in Amsterdam with his father. In this case, Higgins acts as a father figure to Will and has a REAL bonding experience with him, in the Red Light district no less. For me, that combined with Jamie's story really made it sink in how fucked up what happened to him was. Jamie was 14. He was so traumatized that he doesn't even remember his first sexual encounter (Roy's reaction says it all). Yet remembers the first time he ate a stroopwafel. He was just a CHILD and his father had him assaulted by an adult woman (I'm not exaggerating to be dramaticc, at 14 it's considdered statutory rape in Holland). Will got what every person deserves, an actual bonding experience with his mentor, a fun night out and then a consensual sexual encounter among adults. And he's 25. While Jamie had to go through that at just 14... This also makes me think back to season 1, when Jamie was so rattled by the idea of the woman at the auction getting handsy with him. You could see that, despite Keeley's and Roy's snark, it was not played for laughs, Jamie looked truly disturbed at the thought, and it wasn't just because the woman was old (which Roy didn't bat an eye at). No wonder he asked another girl to interfere and make sure the old lady didn't get him. At the time I thought it was just him being a prick, but now... It was just his way to mantain control of the situation, control that he didn't have at 14. He doesn't remember what happened, but things like these sink their theet deep down and come up when you least expect it. They shape you and your behavior even if you block out the memory. Damn, this show...
If you notice, they bookended the show with "Don't Worry". After the friendly, the stadium was singing it and Rebecca commented that this song was depressing. And then at the end, Rebecca, looking quite content and happy, sang the very same song.
Ha, as a native Oklahoma I didn't realize that a) Chet Baker was actually a jazz trumpeter, and b) he was born about 45 minutes from where I currently live in Yale, Oklahoma.
Rebecca: Dutch houseboat guy said, "..it didn't happen *to* me, it happened *for* me." IMO, exactly what she needed to hear. Roy: Rebecca says, "Somewhere that believes they deserve her." Again (IMO), exactly what *he* needed to hear. If he didn't believe it coming from Phoebe, perhaps hearing it from Rebecca will wake him up. Jamie teaching Roy how to ride a bike is my 2nd favorite thing in the whole series (behind Ted hustling Rupert at darts). Try another take ( 😉 ) on HIggins & Will at the jazz club. I think it's a little more significant for Higgins' growth than y'all do. When the girl from the band asked him if he played, he almost started that gagging thing again. It was Will that spoke up for him. Enthusiastically. For all his wit and sage wisdom, Higgins has kind of always been someone content in the background. I think getting up on that stage and playing in front of people was a big change for him. Of course, it's easier to overcome your inhibitions when it's something you love - but doesn't he love football, too? Not necessarily foreshadowing, but *this* show always keeps you guessing. Ted: I agree that re-inventing "Total Football" on his own might mean that he finally understands enough about the game to coach it. Ex-NBA player Clark Kellogg ("Special K", played for the Pacers in the '80s) once called soccer "Basketball for the feet." He wasn't wrong..the tactical concepts are similar. Suedaikis played basketball in college, I'm sure he gets the connection. Soccer stuff: "Three Little Birds" is Ajax's 'fan song', like "You'll Never Walk Alone" at Liverpool, or "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" at West Ham. Loved how Rebecca went from calling it 'depressing' as Ajax stomped Richmond to singing it herself on the bus. I really want to see a stage play with Hannah Waddingam in it some time. Jeez, that woman can sing.
Maybe Higgins will take over Richmond (because he is content to play first chair now) with Rebecca going to live on the boat (for her Richmond is a connection with Rupert and she doesnt need to work)
re: Higgins - I can appreciate this take. I suppose I could argue that Higgins overcoming the "gagging thing" and speaking up for himself would be more significant. Regardless, as I said in the Review portion, I'm glad we had that moment all the same. And, yes, it might lead to more with Higgins - they DO keep us on our toes 🙂 -Andrew

This was my favorite episode of Ted Lasso this season, by far. Regarding Keeley, or the lack of Keeley, in this episode - I don't think she was needed. She left Amsterdam to go with Jack. This was all about the team - the players, coaches, and owner. This was them finding themselves, their voices, and their way back to each other as a complete unit and team. We'll see where Keeley's relationships with Jack, Roy, and Rebecca go in other episodes. Love your reviews!
Agree 💯 - So much happened, and I think we'll be referring back to this episode for quite some time, especially as the final episodes take place. Glad to hear you're appreciating our reviews! 🙏 -Andrew
Great reaction, thx. The bicycle scene was an homage to a similar scene from the Paul Newman/Robert Redford movie called Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. And yes, this episode is a pivot for the final episodes of this season (series?).
@Kelly Fox , when that song started playing, I laughed long & loud. I love the music selections in this series (every season!!), they're really doing it right.
Great writing in this episode. All the disparate subplots at the beginning made me initially doubt it would work but each story was engaging and had an arc with the characters returning changed for the better. Definitely one of the best of the series
Loved this episode! Maybe the best one yet! So many great ways to see the vulnerability of many of the characters amidst the backdrop of everything Amsterdam has to offer. Lots of great lines, introspection, tender moments and of course scenes of Amsterdam. 5/5 for me.
Adam probably knows that movie by heart. He’s a big classic cinema nerd, so I’m shocked that he didn’t bring it up. I’ve never seen it, but I’m sure he’ll want me to react to it now 🤣 -Andrew
Great video again, guys. There are lots of “reaction & review” videos of Ted Lasso - yours are the only ones I watch. Question, as you’re American - rewatching Lasso and in season 2 Jamie says he’d been following Keeley for “a few blocks” - what is a block?
Wow, I appreciate that! I try to watch others when I can, just so I can see how the episodes impact people in different ways, but I wait until I've uploaded our reaction/review first, of course. Regarding Jamie following Keeley for "a few blocks": I'm assuming he means "blocks" as in street blocks. I don't know about other countries, but many metropolitan areas (and older neighborhoods) here have more of a grid layout to their streets (Google a Manhattan street map in New York City, for example) . A block is simply one of those blocks. When I was growing up, I knew how many blocks away all my friends were, in case anyone ever asked me distance to certain landmarks/homes in my town. I'd have to watch the episode to be certain that's what Jamie's referring to, but I assume that's what it was. -Andrew
To be fair, that's not as weird to me as pineapple on pizza, which we can thank North America (Canada) for. I accept the Dislikes that will inevitably come my way for saying this 😅 (Andrew)

Jamie and Roy going from rivals to finding a family in each other is one of the best story developments Ted Lasso has ever done.
