    God, this story reminds me of my depression. Has ever since I read it in middle school.
    A man wakes up one day, suddenly unable to go to work and unable to speak clearly. He continues to spiral downwards in despair, dragging his family along with him, and then he dies.
    Cheery stuff.
    Great reading, Peter.

    • @joanduthie1689
      @joanduthie1689 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There is a happy ending though. That is what we must take away from the story. Throughout Gregor’s “despair” his family is forced to change. I think that is the true metamorphoses. They started out dreadful, but emerge as fine, respectable people.

    • @GiraffeFlavoredCondoms
      @GiraffeFlavoredCondoms 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@joanduthie1689 I mean, it's about a man falling deeper and deeper into a depression, no longer taking care of himself, and committing suicide through neglect, all the while his family grow to hate him more and more and are happy when he's dead. The moral is that if you suffer from mental illness you are a burden to your loved ones and are better off dead. Not happy at all. I do suspect it was a way for the author to vent about their experiences with mental illness and how they're treated, rather than actually teaching that as a moral, since you empathize with Gregor. Still sad either way. A family being happy their depressed brother/son kills himself so he's not a burden anymore is not a happy ending my dude. And why the quotes over "despair" his anguish was a billion percent justified.

    • @anonymousposter6461
      @anonymousposter6461 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@joanduthie1689 I'm glad his family could move on, but clearly Gregor (in whose mind we're placed, through whose sight we see the story) was denied that "happy ending."
      It's embittering and awful that they just cast him aside like that. It's happened to me, too, and just like Gregor, I know there's a reason. I have become a creature that lives in filth, can't communicate with others, can't even leave it's bed, something awful that sucks the energy and joy out of people. I'm not the same person as I was, and my people can't like (or even understand) the person I've become.
      If they're better after they toss me away, well, good for them. I'm glad that someone can be happy. But I don't think being abandoned because you've become repulsive at no fault of your own is a happy ending. I don't think dying unloved is a message of hope.
      But there's a catharsis to seeing that ugly bleakness depicted in media, because I know there's at least one other guy out there who also knows what it means to be Gregor.

    15:28 "That boy has nothing on his mind but the business!" Haha, this line is great because it sounds like it could be sampled for a rap or pop song. I think it's pretty clearly implied that the character's fixation on money/business is detrimental to their well-being, though. I feel that way too; even though looking out for greed and planning finances are essential to survive in our system, I hate doing both of these things so much. I sometimes wonder how much time of my life has been wasted thinking of money, which is both a meaningless placeholder for distribution of goods, and that which determines if we live or die. I think a century ago, Kafka too had the burden of the ubiquitousness of money, that lie of a valuation, to bear on top of his depression, and I feel for him.

    I found your channel after being recommended a @Nightshade video, and I love your content! I am an art school dropout and haven't been able to pursue/practice my art for a long time (partly because of my job and also because I felt uninspired for so long). Thank you for sharing your art - your calmness and what I find to be authentic presentation really "drew" me in. 🥴🤓 I started sketching and finally used my nice set of pens the other day... pen and ink used to be one of my favorite mediums and I really appreciate your technique and that you share helpful tips. I always end up getting ink on my hands or smudging my shit but a few little tweaks and slowing down make a big difference. Also, I realized that I haven't wanted to draw or pAint because I have regret over letting my drawing skills wain... I see my portfolio and look at it with disdain because I see all my old work as not good enough, or immature maybe is the word I want? Logically, I know that I must consistently spend time and expend effort to grow and feel more confident, but I also realize I've just been overthinking it all far too much. Thank you again for inspiring me to just draw, and enjoy myself.
    (I've been looking at glass pens and ink since one I watched of you trying some new ones out and I'm hoping to try that once I get more comfortable and also can keep a piece smudge free, haha) 🖋

    Next to Camus I'd say that Kafka makes some of my favorite philospical stories/novels

    I love your selection of books, I wonder if you might ever do At the Mountains of Madness? It's longer than your usual stories so it would probably have to take separate videos, but I'd enjoy them. Just a book idea for you.

    Great artwork and narration. You could definitely give the Libravox narrators a run for their money :)

    Do you ever consider expanding this to longer stories by for instance Lovecraft?
    Love your work!

      I have read several Lovecraft stories, they're here on the channel, but this is the longest story I've read so far, and it really strained my voice for some reason. Maybe I need to take more breaks and drink some honey-infused beverage. :)
      Here's the playlist where you can find some of the Lovecraft readings: th-cam.com/play/PLhAh6h_NxoMwIgmjue4hcy-TpYYQQ7wr4.html
