love everything about this: the surprise factor, cuddling with totoro, all the filming angles you find in your office, someone reading me a list of books - my sunday morning needs nothing else
gotta love the fun of apartment background noise, what a totally chill not-at-all-maddening ambient elevator soundtrack 🙃 i hope the mic haters will chill out now, the videos have never looked or sounded better!
The autistic stimming happy dance I'm doing from this surprise video startled my dog (he's now wiggly wagging his tale so I think he understands the excitement) :'D
Actually... I found "The Kamogawa Food Detectives", with that exact cover, IN ENGLISH in Singapore! I found it just a month ago on holiday, at Kinokuniya. Now I wish I bought it!
not the elevator sound omg i thought someone was vacuuming woah. but but but this list is so dang good, you got me so excited for so many & I HAVE TO READ CURSED BUNNY ALREADY
I'm adding two to my TBR! Significant Others sounds so intriguing, I'd love if it turns out to be a queerplatonic relationship. That's a relationship type I'm in and I rarely see representation for it. And The Age of Magical Overthinking! I fell really deep into manifesting culture over the last few years and grateful I got out of it. Thinking my thoughts can change my reality has been really damaging for me. It made me shame myself for my mental illness because I believed I was thinking wrong and that's why I was suffering and having unwanted thoughts.
I'm super excited for Dear Wendy to come out in April of this year! It's about two aroace college roommates who unknowingly run competing blogs and drama unfolds from there? Alice Oseman gave it a great review so it must be good! I've been looking for more stories about friendship so I'm pretty excited for this one
I read 37 books last year, and apparently based on other goals I've set already for 2024 it's my moonshot year babyyyy, so inspired by Ariel and the books unbound podcast I want to read 100 books this year! I honestly can't thank you enough for adding to my tbr, because I always seem to struggle when left to my own devices to actually pick books
The Kamogawa Food Detectives is already available in English! I got it for my uncle as a Christmas present, and I've seen it in bookstores both in Germany and in Slovenia :)
I went to Mona Awad's book release for Rouge here in Montreal and she mentioned that when she got her movie deal for Bunny (Bad Robot) they signed for a prequel (and if I remember right even sequel). So not sure if it will be out in book format first or not....
I didn’t know about Sheila Heti’s 2024 release and I am now adequately hyped! And hell yes to another Emily Austin. Some other 2024 releases that might interest you are Parade by Rachel Cusk, The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard, and Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors
OMG so excited! Your videos are the perfect cosy companion for the cold weather! I recently got my autism diagnosis, and since books are one of my biggest special interests, your content is always so chill and comforting. Hope you had a good holiday season/new year!
one of my favourite romances in 2023 was the dangerous damsels series by india holton. they're cosy fantasy romances set in the victorian era in england and all the protagonists of her books are autistic, as well as the male love interest in the third book. she's got another similar series beginning in july but i highly recommend the dangerous damsels series. the first one has my favourite romance but the autistic traits of the second book's main character were so very relatable.
got this notification this morning while wandering around a wonderful bookstore in new york but haven’t had the chance to sit and watch until now!! what a wonderful surprise!!
I just read The Kamogawa Food Detectives on the weekend. (its already available where I live in English) it is a pure comfort book. Be warned, you will get hungry reading it, the food descriptions are mouthwatering. Before the Coffee gets cold hit me harder in the feels, but I really enjoyed the chill comfort of this one. And, yes there is a cat in the book. That Korean bookshop one looks interesting, have added it to my cart. I'm hoping to get the prose and comic versions of She and her cat as well soon. I need these comfort reads in between the dark sci-fis I tend to read.
Hi there!! I just wanted to say that I have a really epic middle grade book series to reccomend. It's the warrior series by Erin Hunter. Cat fantasy fighting with clans and great characters. The first series is called "The Prophecies Begin". I just finished my reread and it holds up so well (with some middle grade-isms to be aware of), but otherwise as long as you are fine with the main characters dying--they are cats... so---I think you will enjoy it! Just a recommendation
Your video made my day, as always. tonight we had a water leak in my house and my computer was drowned, so I was feeling pretty bad all day, now I feel much better and excited to read new books this year❤
Truly appreciate your videos. Life has been stressful, I’m trying to graduate on time and I’m taking a winter class which is super fast paced but I need it to graduate. Also my spring semester is not looking my way so I’m just trying to keep myself going. So thank you for being cozy and truly just creating a space to decompress and take about our love for books 🤍
So many overlaps with my tbr 💞Honey Witch sounds amazing! I'm also excited for The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst. The cover gives off all the cottagecore vibes and it has a sentient spider plant witch's assistant👀
Hey. I don't know if you'll be able to get your hands on it but My debut translation comes out this February. It's called "Under The Night Jasmine" and it's written by Manav Kaul. It's translated from Hindi. It should be available everywhere as Penguin has the world rights. Synopsis : In the middle of the lockdown a writer starts to lose his mind while he is writing a novel and fact and fiction intermingle. There's a queer relationship and straight relationships in it as well. I like to describe it as Call Me By Your Name meets The Reader. I hope you enjoy it. P.S. I'm mentored in translation by Daisy Rockwell. I hope that gets me browny points. 💜💜💜💜
"Love and Autism" has been on shelves in Australia for around a year now, I didn't realise it wasn't available in other places as normally Australia is normally the last to get things. Exciting that more people will get to read it!
You sooooo need to try the wayward children series they are so short and so impacting with important themes. The newest book is coming out in the January!!!
i just had to say ur 100000% my comfort booktuber, you always remind me its okay to have slower days or days where i give myself a break so thank u for all! ❤
If you're really into nature poetry I have to recommend both "Field Guide to the Haunted Forest" and "Love Notes from the Hollow Tree" by Jarod Anderson. 💚 Some of my absolute favourite poems are in there.
I got so joyful when I saw the surprise video thumbnail! I am just coming back to my apartment after family holidays and I definitely needed a comfy and fun video to help my lonely mood ❤ I love this kind of videos and you nailed! I am particularly excited about Slow noodles, the We are here poetry collection and ++ The magical overthinking non-fiction one!! Thanks for all the recs!
I love the microphone. Hated when you didn’t have it the last time. Felt like something was “off” the whole time 😅😅. Thank you for sharing such a cozy video. Getting me excited for reading in the upcoming year!
Disability Intimacy is my most anticipated read! Interesting Facts About Space was my Book of the Month pick and should be arriving today! (as an early release)
truly grateful for the entire category of upcoming autism book releases 🫶 thank you for helping fuel my special interest as I continue on this journey of self-discovery as a late-diagnosed autistic woman!! 😆
oh my gosh how did i not know about so many of these!! i also am very excited for the new before the coffee gets cold but like, we have added at least another full stack to the online tbr from this video 😍
If you haven’t already I highly recommend Elena Knows, it’s translated from Spanish and the author is from Argentina 🇦🇷 it has great disability rep and it packs a punch. The kind of book that stays with you
Screenshot galore saving so many of these titles for the future! Thank you for making this video! Before watching, keedie and disability intimacy were already on my top anticipated reads lists! It’s hard to say but after this video I think I’m most excited about the age of magical overthinking and the last three titles you shared 💕
The Kamagawa Food Detectives already came out in 2023, I know because I already read and loved it!!! I'm from Belgium so you def can find it in the stores :)
I love how diversely you read! I'm hoping to read more POC, ND and queer stories (since I'm a triple threat in each category!) and you always come through 🤩
Just learned about another neurodivergence book that came out recently and sounds right up your street. It's "Empire of Normality: Neurodivergence and Capitalism" by Robert Chapman. I've heard good things and am hoping to get to it soon!
Oh I heard a translated work by Anton Hur? Yes! That got me excited. I can guarantee the translation is brilliant. He's perhaps the most celebrated Korean translator nowadays, with reason. He's also a great guy
I was just thinking earlier today how I need to research 2024 releases and then I open youtube and see this!! Thanks as always for exponentially explanding my TBR 😂❤
highly recommend checking out Charco Press--they focus on translating contemporary Latin American literature and I've only heard good things (especially Selva Almada's works) . If you read Elena Knows (I think you hauled it?) that's who publishes it!
Wishing you a healthy and fulfilling 2024, Ally! I’m not super up to date on new releases but I would say I’m most excited about reading Emily Austin’s new book because I loved reading her debut last year!
ally! have you read “the infinite wait” by julia wertz? it’s a graphic novel memoir that i read last year & was honestly the first graphic novel i had picked up in years, about getting diagnosed with a chronic illness & how her love of books as a child led to her becoming a cartoonist
I'm super excited for Be a Revolution by Ijeoma Oluo, it comes out really soon. I have really enjoyed her other two books, so I am stoked for this one.
I cant wait for the sequel for emily wilde. I think you will love it. Also I think you should check out Mothballs its a graphic novel set in Bueno Aries about a young woman grieving her grandmother and discovering why her grandmother was the way she was.
Love this list! I’m in the middle of an ARC for Interesting Facts About Space and have copied out so many quotes! The main character also is strongly autistic-coded
I am really looking forward to More Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa because I loved the first book. I am also intrigued by the short story collection New Adventures in Space Opera which will include a story by Becky Chambers!! Books and Bao is a great TH-cam channel if you love translated works.
Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino is a new release that I really think will appeal to you! I truly loved it. Literary fiction/scifi all about humanity and grief. A special coming of age story, which includes honest and tender moments between a mother and daughter. Adina is my new favorite fictional character. I described this as Lady Bird + E.T. + The Friend all came together and made this literary baby. 😅
i have loads of unread books on my shelf and i want to read as many as i can this year! and be more mindful when buying books :))) though the nature poems collection has a really nice cover and i've wanted to explore poetry so i think i'll look into that one.
your videos light up my sunday! opening my storygraph app so i can add all these to my tbr LOL. any chance for vlogs soon? no worries if you have nothing planned, love seeing you on my screen regardless, i just love your vlogs hehe :)
oh of course! it's just the season for end of year/start of year wrap uppy things. (vlogs are my fav too i get it) next week is a multi-day bookshelf organisation vlog and thennnn a cozy reset vlog after that :-)
I just picked up and read The Kamogawa Food Detectives, in English and with that exact cover! I got it at Luddites in Antwerp so it's definitely already out here 🤔 It was cute but quite repetitive (and the cat doesn't show up much 😞) edit: Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop is also available and very enjoyable!!
@@k7cos I feel like there's some irony in the fact that a book with "detectives" in the title is experiencing such a confusing and mysterious release. 😂
so happy to unexpectedly find you in my subscriptions box 💖 I’m currently reading DallerGut Dream Department Store by Mi-ye Lee which is translated from Korean and came out in English recently. It’s a magical realism speculative fiction story about a department store that sells dreams and I totally recommend it!! ☁️
I've started doing the Reading the World challenge this year so translated books coming out in my biggest hyperfocus right now: Sons, Daughters by Ivana Bodrožić (trans poetry from Croatia, out in February), Ghostroots by 'Pemi Aguda (speculative fiction from Nigeria, out in June). Just a taste from now, if you want more ill send you a bigger list when I have the spoons
@@allisonpaiges ok I've joined books that are being translated with books from the challenge set in other countries around the world, hopefully, you can find something that you would like to read: Ghostroots by ‘Pemi Aguda (horror short stories from Nigeria); Sons, Daughter by ivana bodrožić (trans poetry from Croatia); River East, River West by Aube Rey Lescure (historical fiction in developing modern China); The cemetery of Untold Stories by Julia Alvarez (magical realism stories from the dominican republic); Cinema Love by Jiaming Tang (gay men in rural China); Lost Ark Dreaming by Suyi Davies Okungbowa (dystopia novella set off the coast of West Africa). There are also a lot of speculative books coming out inspired by the author's culture which is amazing, including The Spice Gate by Prashanth Srivatsa!
Yay, what a lovely video. Thank you for uploading! I am most excited for Keedie from your list. I love A Kind of Spark so this is great news! ❤ One of my fav books from a few years ago was Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine and Gail Honeymoon is meant to be releasing her second book in September 2024 🎉 I’m looking forward to a vlog when/if you have plans to upload any. I appreciate all of your videos but love vlogs the most ☺️
Happy to see you again so soon! And super happy to see Emily Wilde made it on your tbr. I can't wait to see what she's up against this time! Btw, I'm currently reading a very interesting, gut-wrenching, hopeful memoir entitled "Mala's Cat" by Mala Kacenberg. If you have time, please look it up. Happy reading!
that's so weird, where did you find the release date for The Kamogawa Food Detectives? I'm looking for it and apparently, the ebook and hardback have been out since October 2023, and the paperback will be out in April according to the Pan Macmillan website.
Hi Ally! I love your videos, and especially that you keep ypur language almost always clean, not needing to worry if my kids are around while I watch you! Speaking of my kids, will you link where you got your Totoro plushy? My daughter's birthday is in February and she is asking for one!
I refreshed my TH-cam subscriptions and just saw the colors of the thumbnail out of the corner of my eye and was like is that a video from ally? THATS ALLY! Thankful for you! 🫶
Ok this is very random and isn't a book recommendations BUT I think you'd absalutley luv this kdrama. Its the first piece of entertainment with a romance between an autistic person and a neurotypical person in it that I've seen done right. The kdrama is called "extraordinary Attorney Woo" and meanwhile she mainly exhibits very stereotypical autistic traits in films and shows, it was represented right. People around her appriciate her for not just her skills, her boyfriend is absalutley head over heels for her just the way she is, she has an specail interest that is not just law (ocean animals!), she has a safe food, her boyfriend lets her info dump a lot, she also happy stims a lot! The show also touches on many issues that autistic people face. Episode 3 especailly hit so hard touching on verious different things that I want to go into but this comment is already long enough. Nevertheless I highly recommend checking this show out despite it not being a book! It's on Netflix and I think they are working on a season 2 sometimes this year or the next. :)
i cant wait for Keedie to come out too! have you read Show us who you are yet, also by the same author? it was so GOOD to see autistic AND ADHD rep in middle grade, or anywhere really

I just picked up and read The Kamogawa Food Detectives, in English and with that exact cover! I got it at Luddites in Antwerp so it's definitely already out here 🤔 It was cute but quite repetitive (and the cat doesn't show up much 😞)
edit: Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop is also available and very enjoyable!!
I ordered it recently from Waterstones! It looks like the hardback is currently available and the paperback is getting released in April.
@@pippapike Oh I have both in paperback? Weird
'Before we forget kindness' will be out on 19.09. :)
Just a taste from now, if you want more ill send you a bigger list when I have the spoons
would looooove a bigger list when you have spoons but no rush ever hehe thank you for these already!!
Happy 2024 you lovely human you🦄🌷🌿🍀🫖🥧🕯📓🖋I love Sangu Mandanna and Heather Fawcetts books,so heartwarming,cozy,qute... Warm hugs coming your way🫂

One of my fav books from a few years ago was Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine and Gail Honeymoon is meant to be releasing her second book in September 2024 🎉
I’m looking forward to a vlog when/if you have plans to upload any.
After hearing you loved part of your world I ran and bought it- can’t wait to dive into this romance and it’s sequel!
that's so weird, where did you find the release date for The Kamogawa Food Detectives? I'm looking for it and apparently, the ebook and hardback have been out since October 2023, and the paperback will be out in April according to the Pan Macmillan website.
Hi Ally! I love your videos, and especially that you keep ypur language almost always clean, not needing to worry if my kids are around while I watch you! Speaking of my kids, will you link where you got your Totoro plushy? My daughter's birthday is in February and she is asking for one!
i got it at hot topic over ten years ago!
@@allisonpaiges awww thank you!! Happy New Year! Idea for a video: Book Shop with Me! How I find my books for Americans Abroad.
I refreshed my TH-cam subscriptions and just saw the colors of the thumbnail out of the corner of my eye and was like is that a video from ally? THATS ALLY! Thankful for you! 🫶
Great vlog Allie !! ❤❤ I love your videos so much! Hope you have a great start to the new year !
oh my goodness an unexpected treat of a video, xoxo Al!
💚🖤 Screen shot a few of these thanks
