    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins) gives his opening statement to the Supreme Court addressing that the natural state of mankind is freedom.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
This Steven Spielberg-directed exploration into a long-ago episode in African-American history recounts the trial that followed the 1839 rebellion aboard the Spanish slave ship Amistad and captures the complex political maneuverings set in motion by the event. Filmed in New England and Puerto Rico, the 152-minute drama opens with a pre-credit sequence showing Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) and the other Africans in a violent takeover of the Amistad. Captured, they are imprisoned in New England where former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman), viewing the rebels as "freedom fighters," approaches property lawyer Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey), who attempts to prove the Africans were "stolen goods" because they were kidnapped. Running for re-election, President Martin Van Buren (Nigel Hawthorne) overturns the lower court's decision in favor of the Africans. Former President John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins) is reluctant to become involved, but when the case moves on to the Supreme Court, Adams stirs emotions with a powerful defense. The storyline occasionally cuts away to Spain where the young Queen Isabella (Anna Paquin) plays with dolls; she later debated the Amistad case with seven U.S. presidents. The character portrayed by Morgan Freeman is a fictional composite of several historical figures. For authentic speech, the Africans speak the Mende language, subtitled during some scenes but not others.

Keep in mind this man did this after ye already served as president. Imagine a former president doing something like this in his retirement

James John Quincy Adams had never retired from politics. He’s been around it his entire life, being the son of John Adams (lawyer, delegate, and president), and started engaging in politics at the age of 12-14 as the aid/secretary to the Ambassador of Russia (I think it was Russia). After his presidency he basically went straight to the House of Representatives and served until he died of a stroke in that room.

One of the very best speeches in all movie history which has many poignant messages that affect all of us as human beings. Sir Anthony Hopkins has been one of my favourite actors even since I saw him in The Elephant man. One of the world's finest most versatile actors.

Anthony Hopkins did a magnificent job ! He did justice to a man who has not received his due and gave his all during his service to our country. To talk to him would be the, most enlightening experience. He knew Washington, Jefferson, Marquis de Lafayette, Hamilton, his parents John and Abigail...including Benjamin Franklin and countless others. He spoke 6 languages, graduated 2nd in his class Harvard and started as a junior. Best Secretary of State in our history....my gosh!

Amistad," like Spielberg's "Schindler's List," is about the ways good men try to work realistically within an evil system to spare a few of its victims. "Schindler's List" works better as narrative because it is about a risky deception, while "Amistad" is about the search for a truth that, if found, will be small consolation to the millions of existing slaves. As a result, the movie doesn't have the emotional charge of Spielberg's earlier film - or of "The Color Purple," which moved me to tears. What is most valuable about "Amistad" is the way it provides faces and names for its African characters, whom the movies so often make into faceless victims

Sadly both points of view expressed her have a measure of truth. For all of recorded history those in power have been enlarged by the labor of the masses, whether indentured servant, slave or laborer instead of those who labor for production to share equitably
And equally In the profit of their labor. All
The while they desire freedom, yearn for it. This is why people lead lives of quiet desperation now. They work 1/3-2/3 of thier life away for a few weeks of freedom a year and a sense of security that just isn’t real. This is not what God or nature designed man to do or to be.
