More Failure in the future please! I think you would absolutely love The Heart Is a Monster, and I'm pretty sure that all their work is self produced. Thanks for the review
Other than their first full length, which was “produced” by Albini (RIP) This one took a few listens to sit with me. Much moodier than their other work. That opening track almost feels like a post-nuclear surf rock cut
@@barleymepodcast2301 I had the same experience! It took a few listens to really get into this album because it’s very different from their previous ones, but it really is great!
Also this is probably THE Failure record where Greg and Ken’s writing is not as collaborative. Greg loves the spacier atmospheric tones and Ken is that big heavy bright burst. And they tended to engage both within the same song, but this one seems more separated from track to track.
90's failure is doing alt-rock/grunge, reformed Failure departs from that while still "citing" it/ alluding to it. I think 80 % of their post-hiatus work fits the "ambient" bill in some respects. I think it is perfect radio/streaming music with a distinct style, but as such, it doesn't necessarily go hard. I have the feeling that it is music that wants to find its way into the listener's playlist, but the listener is assumed to use music as something that plays in the background. Basically, this might be how streaming affects music.
I don’t think streaming has anything to do with the type of music they’ve come out with post-reunion. If you listen to interviews they did at that time, they mentioned that it was important to them to not just be a 90s band and play the “hits” as it were. They wanted to still make music that is forward looking. They aren’t the type of band that wants to do the same thing over again. They really tried to do something different for this album and I think they succeeded. It does take a few listens to really get into it though. I love this album, but I didn’t at first. Sometimes you have to take music for what it is and not judge it by what you think it should be.
@@indegoraven Oh, I am not at all negative about the direction they took post-hiatus. I like all of their work and I'm glad they changed their style, since Fantastic Planet was already the peak of what 90's alt-rock can do. Maybe their new stuff isn't designed to cater to streaming service listeners, but it seems "ambient" in a way lots of radio music is, i.e. not as "confrontational" or "aggressive" as older tunes such as "Smoking Umbrella" or "Pillowhead Girl", but that's not a downside for me.
@@KommentarSpaltenKrieger I agree. I think staying in that mode would’ve been good for the original fan base, but it also would’ve hindered their evolution as a band. The ambiance is probably the thing I like most about their music. They create soundscapes that allow you to create your own meaning. To me, their music is something that you “feel” better than you can describe. It just works! It doesn’t always make sense, but it doesn’t have to. It’s so human in that way.
