Weinstein, nobody ever said "simple atheism" would be enough to navigate life. That's why atheists often are secular humanists or something. Atheism is merely about one issue, gods; it's not reall a worldview in itself.
I've been an atheist for nearly 50 years but I never understood the need to congregate around it. like there's literally nothing to talk about the second you realize there's no supernatural. it's the ONE thing we DON'T ever have to think about.
so in that sense it wasn't a surprise the online atheist groups instead became about something else, and it seems they spiralled into some weird toxic combination of islamophobia and misogyny. which in turn was the perfect breeding ground for right-wing/incel crowd despite having NOTHING to do with atheism.

Religious types are often very paranoid about maintaining idealogical boundaries but consider it their obligation to errode others. Atheists can be awful of course but in the US its almost always defensive. When xtians etc get angry about many issues they say hey we are not Islam but that's also a weird threat. So no surprise Islamophobia became a common ground

As a long-time atheist, when Rubin says the "atheist movement" is dead he's referring to some of the individuals associated with "new atheism". And in that narrow sense he's correct. Christopher Hitchens died, and Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins have largely moved on. It's no longer a media/internet/cultural sensation. But he's wrong in the bigger sense. The steady erosion of religiosity in America advances inexorably.

Its not even a fallacy. That would imply some sort of twisted logic to prove a point. Its a flat out lie. Atheism and Agnosticism is growing massively every year. 60% of the USA now identifies as Atheist or agnostic, its even larger in Scandinavia and the UK.
I truly believe Christianity can be a tool for good in the world as a community concept and definitely no religion should ever be taken literally because it leads to extremism and oppression but all religion is dangerous and saying a debate between Jordan Peterson and Sam Harris reversed a movement against money grubbing churches(not just catholic but Islamic and Jewish churches are guilty of the same) is so far beyond ridiculous and fallacy it made the side of my face twitch in ten percent of an aneurysm.

If there ever was an atheist movement, it ended once progressives realized that the decline of religious faith didn't equate with a decline in right wing bigotry and authoritarianism. There are considerable naivety in that regard, especially given the experience of the UK and other western nations where conservatism still thrived regardless of the fact that religious faith hadn't been an important factor in politics and public life for several decades.
The fact is that the political spectrum of non-believers is widening as their numbers grow. The problem isn't religion, it's conservatism. As they push their religious past to one side, right-wingers readily find other reasons to justify their hatred and paranoia, as their love of Trump and his grievous populism has amply demonstrated.
How do you know that it isn't fewer and fewer people becoming louder and more extreme? Atheists/agnostics/non-religious people are overwhelmingly non-conservative. Yes, not entirely so, and maybe conservatives nones will grow a bit. But still, it's the Bible that condones slavery, misogyny and homophobia, etc. Religion is not the entire problem but still a huge problem.

There was an atheist movement. I used to describe myself as such. The atheist movement became far more bigoted and hateful than the Christians (only ever Christians) that they would constantly attack. I can longer call myself an atheist, purely out of disgust.

Weinstein was also an embarrassment to Evergreen due to his research, I wish more people brought that up. Bret has a messiah complex - as a professor, he would go around claiming that his PhD thesis was the most important document in biology since Darwin. He claims to have found a framework akin to the change between Newtonian physics and Einstein’s theory of relativity. His thesis had been entirely discredited in his field for a decade prior to his bit publicity stunt at Evergreen. His explanation is that he’s like Galileo and he will take his rightful place as one of the greatest scientists in history… after he passes that pesky peer review process.

The funny part is the debate Rubin references ends with complete embarrassment and frustration as Peterson proves completely unable to even agree upon a sensible definition of truth (as Peterson pretentiously wanted to over-complicate the term by saying what's true "in the truest sense" is that which serves human reproduction).

The 'new religious people' like JP have tries to re-frame the argument away from whether it is factually true, as they cannot hope to win that argument, to effectively saying that religion is a necessary lie for socienty to function.
Except JP can't say that explicitly as it sounds bad, so he spends a lot of time trying to re-define truth so it can include finctional stories that he thinks are relavent, and rely on the general argument that if society does not have religion something worse will take it's place.
I don't think it ended the movement, but side stepped a lot of the most obvious arguments against religion.

@anthonykennedy5324 religion in the context I used it in is broad classification of all the religions put together, with the shared characteristic of being a code of morality and a explanation of the natural world which relies on some supernatural causative agent. So yes there is such a thing as religion and there are also separate religions which have different stories and different constructs and different moral codes.
It's not a very scientific way of describing a system of beliefs.

If I lived in a place where abortion was illegal, and was pregnant, and the prognosis was that my baby had zero chance of surviving more than a few hours to few days, and would spend his/her short life suffering in agonising pain...and I was also told there's a significant chance that it would be a risky labour and I'd be left infertile..
..even if I was living in poverty, and couldn't afford to travel somewhere that would be able to *legally* terminate the pregnancy. I'd have absolutely no choice but to have an *illegal* termination.
I'm a mother of 3, and I can't stand the thought of my children going through any pain, so there's absolutely no way I'd be able to give birth to a baby *knowing* that they were going to have to endure for as long as they managed to keep breathing.
*What more proof do we need that right-wing politicians, and "pro-life" (predominantly male) right-wingers in general, *couldn't'care less* about the unborn, babies or any children, when they'd rather see a child born, live a few hours of torture, then AS PREDICTED die.... leaving the parents scared for life, and possibly unable to conceive again.*
I will never understand why Sam Seder and many on the left are so dead set on not even willing to discuss downsides of one religion versus the other and the way those religions encourage people to behave. It is not inherently racist to have those conversations. I'm not saying there's people who don't misuse those types of arguments to mask true racism, I'm sure there is, but I never got the impression Sam Harris was one of them. Regardless, when you scream racism and just assume somebody's being racist even when they're not, you're intentionally shutting down that conversation and I think that's the last thing we need right now.

My overwhelming feeling watching Weinstein, Peterson etc is disappointment. I think both of them initially had interesting opinions but I can’t abide them now. I think both were subjected to undue pressure and criticism, but who knows whether that influenced their regressions or if they would have pivoted anyway

They started playing the game subtlety, and then when they saw that they could just outright shift into displaying their nutty ideology, they did it. I think it is totally valid to think that some religions are worse than others, when there are such differences in the holy books, the history, and their current state. I disagree with conflating being anti-Islam with being anti-Arab.
It varies over time. There was a period, around a thousand years ago, where Islam was less militant and more enlightened than Christianity.

As a fellow former member of the New Atheist club in 2008, I can say that the real criticism that "movement" deserves is that they were always just reactionaries that happened to be reactionary against a power structure that people already hate: institutionalized religion.
I got frustrated with how often they would reject trying to create any sort of movement for good, and the number of stupid schisms that emerged over stuff like "maybe we should have a rule to not be racist" started to tire me out. When some clown in an armored suit in a tuxedo showed up on the TH-cam atheist scene diagnosing the problem as "too much group think as after effects from being previously religious," I realized that that crowd had no answers or solutions, only complaints about everyone else.

This Texas case you cite, you initially said that "Well, ALL doctors agree that this fetus has a particular congenital disease that'll result in its near-certain death in the first hours to days...", but after some discussion, hedge to: "Of course, no one can be certain of anything..." is hilarious.
If a bunch of doctors were to pronounce YOU (after some hypothetical, catastrophic situation) "essentially dead" that you have little chance of survival, I'm sure that you'd agree with them and give up, too, right?? Bet not. Yet you'd make the same decision for a developing human? Hypocritical much?? Or, maybe, you might argue that you have voice and agency, that you can DECIDE not to give up. Well, what if you were unconscious but still with vital signs? That you cannot speak up and give consent BY ITSELF should give the doctors the power to decide your life/death then and there? That's messed up.
