The joy Jay & Clayton show in each other's company and this old car is what being a true car guy is what life is all about. Clayton's involving his boys in the car reminds me of my dad and me doing the yearly tear down on his pumped up '53 V8 flatty coupe. 1953 Ford Customline. Dechromed. Grey. (You could call it battleship grey. He worked for a pipeline company and used leftover paint from a project.) 1BA flathead block with Offie heads, Edelbrock twin carb intake manifold with 2 Strombergs, and Fenton cast iron headers with cut-outs fed into a 4 speed manual. The steering wheel had Lincoln markings on it. (It was a big wheel, a knuckle banger, no power steering.) He was always looking for ways to take a few more ounces off that car. Fast? Oh hell yes! For it's time.
I'm not even a car guy, but I probably have watched more Jay Leno's Garage than Tonight show. Saw Jay in person once, great comedian, but you can see this is his real passion.

This episode just re-inforced my opinion of Jay Leno. I think Jay is truly an average Joe that just happens to have a lot more money to do things than I do. That doesn't take away anything from Jay. I love Jay Leno and the fact that he has a passion that we all share. He wants to share with us the things he has been blessed with. You can't ask anybody to do more than he does for us. He is a good guy and we need more good guys in the world.

What do I think? I think Clayton has distilled the American experience of the twentieth century into a single car. Industry, mobility and the resulting freedom, self-sufficiency and individual initiative, plus character and a little bit of style. Ken Burns could hardly have done better with a half-hour history lesson. Congratulations, and thanks to Jay for recognizing a special car and talent.

Thanks Jay, your best video. I'd like to tell my Model T story about my dad. I've had a 27 coupe for about 15 years, and when my dad was in his 80's, I would take him to the grocery store in the T. Got a lot of attention, especially from older people who knew what it is. His dad had a T when he was young, and sold it to get a new 37 GM truck with a granny 4 speed. He would take off in 2nd (first was a compound low gear that wasn't used much), and shift from 2nd to 4th., He said he never ever saw his dad use 3rd gear. After riding around in my Model T with the 2 speed planetary transmission, it dawned on him why his dad never used 3rd gear in the truck. He was used to having two gears and didn't see the need for anything else. My dad was born in March 1927, about the time my car was made, and was 10 years old when his dad sold the Model T to get a new truck. After seventy something years, he finally understood why his dad did what he did. I lost my dad October 2014 at 87, but that's OK because I will see him again someday along with my mom I lost when I was 9. What a reunion that will be, but in the meantime, if you see a forest green coupe tooling around Amarillo Texas, that'll be me.
Jay should consider this young man to fulfill his role in the garage, when he is ready to retire. Very talented And intelligent. He is one of a very few guest that Jay didn't constantly interrupt and/or talk over. He actually held Jay's attention. No offense Jay ( but you do). I just was impressed with this video.

Jay is a class act; always has been. Most older car guys would have talked down to someone like Clay. He knows his stuff; and Jay never contradicted him; and respected his knowledge; despite his young age; and maybe saw Clay as a version of his younger self. Clayton defiantly has my respect. I'm 54; with way more means than he has; but no where near the balls to just do it like he has.
The kid is more wiser than his years. Somebody needs to pick up the torch of car wisdom when Jay does retire. I do believe that Jay will die underneath a car that he was working on.

My Grampa told me so many stories about hopping up the Model T's in the 30's and 40's. They used Rajo (sp?) heads, Winfield carburetors, Ruckstal rear ends, etc. They would channel the bodies over the frames, etc. He used to tell a story about the Constable in Long Beach who couldn't catch their hopped up t's in his patrol car (I think it was a Dodge). Well, one day he got a Ford V8 and said "now I can catch you guys". Well they baited him into chasing them and he wouldn't give up and blew the engine in his car. My Grampa and a buddy held a speed record at the Muroc Dry Lake for Model t's for awhile. Good Stuff!

This episode inspired me to start looking, and get one of these cars. I'm 77. When I was a young teenager I was fascinated by what I called Old Time cars. I pressured my dad, and he and I hunted around in Wisconsin and somewhere in Tennessee, and never came back with one. Thank you, Jay, for the affectionate review; it's never too late.
This was my favorite episode in a long while. Average guys who wrench, build and improve what they've got is the car culture I enjoy more than anything.
Well, I plan to wrench about on a few cars, make them nice. Add some performance parts and not carefully measure absolutely every stat about it. Just make it look, sound and feel nice, the way it used to be!
Jay, you should have more cars and owners like these on your show! I especially love it when the owner knows what the heck he or she's talking about! Anyone have deep pocket can buy a flashy car and tell you stuff from the catalog, but not a lot of owners can tell you how he or she builds it.

OK! Two things: I want this car! and 2, I'm beyond impressed with this young man! I'lm 74, a car guy and life long automotive enthusiast. The car is just perfect, and Clayton's knowledge and attention to detail are on point!

Now 88 - But I Loved it. Driving my 1921 T original to school was a joy in 1945, so buying it for 50.00 but going into the service in 1946 sold it for 75.00. I've never gotten over feeling so bad for not keeping it.
Pure automotive bliss... Plain and simple, as it was meant to be. The man and his machine, rolling down the road.... It just doesn't get any better than that.... This is why I love Jay's channel.... He gets it, 100%. Just look at the look on his face as he's driving that Model T... Priceless.
I subscribe to the old saying "If you didn't build it yourself it isn't really yours". This is truly Clayton Paddison's car and that deserves a huge pile of respect.
What a great guy. So often it's a curator or builder showing up and they are not nearly as interesting to listen to. This guy is deeply and personally involved and has knowledge pouring out of him. Also he was not stuttering and camera shy. It is funny that Jay mentioned Jonathan Ward, because he reminded me of the episodes with Ward, he too speaks naturally on camera and just pours information and love of his craft. I hope Jay keeps in touch with him, I know I would.

That is wonderful and inspirational. My Father is 81 years old and fulfilling a lifelong dream. He is currently building a hot rod from a 1926 model T (T bucket). This thing sat upside down in a field for over 50 years, but as a testament to the quality of the vanadium steel, the body is still straight and solid. As the car had no drive train in it, he is putting in the LT1 engine and complete drive train from a 1992 Cadillac Fleetwood, and the front end from a 48 Ford. He custom built a new frame for it, and is putting in the back seat from an '88 Lebarron. It fits perfectly as the front seat for this model T, like it was made for it. I am so proud of my father for realizing a life long dream at his age, and am constantly surprised to see the cars progress every time I visit.
The modifications Clayton made are not only chosen well, but make the car much more driveable. Sorry they didn't discuss the suspension, because it looks like a major mod, but I guessed it when Jay had to almost get on the ground to crank it! I love, love, loved this episode...real world hot rodding at its best! Thanx Jay.

In 1962 our father bought a 1926 Ford touring car, and my two brothers and I were introduced to the Model T Ford. Dad passed away last year, but three years ago he surprised us all by buying another '26 tourer. Riding with him into a busy intersection could be terrifying. He'd say, "O, they'll stop." Thank God they always did! Thanks for the excellent video, which one of those bros shared with me.
One of my favorite episodes. I've watched it half a dozen times. It would be cool to have Clayton back on the show to see what he's done in the past seven years.
I grew up two houses away from probably the richest family in our little town. The guy's father and grandfather had worked in the local paper mill and they invented, patented and manufactured the first pneumatic air shafts for rewinding paper rolls. He had three sons, the youngest of which was my age. When i was about twelve i went with my friend and his brothers and dad to pick up a 1925 T that was about 10 miles away at a country home. Thus began my education of T's and my interest in classics as the middle brother had a '48 Ford Businessman's Coupe he bought and did the back yard flathead hot rod trip. He still has the car today at 70 years of age although it is much updated with an LT1 350. His oldest brother had a 1940 Chevy 2dr. sedan we would borrow and my friend and me would cruise the countryside and around our local lake. His dad was frugal for his means to the point that he dynamighted the sand stone and excavated a basement under their house in the 60's. The T got a budget resto and also a 1930 Ford Victoria to a much higher standard than the T. I must say i have always felt fortunate having the child hood i had in a town of about 5,000 in the Pacific Northwest as i spent much of my childhood around that family.
This guy has to be one of my favorite guests he new his stuff wasnt cocky about it and the part that woulda flipped me out was the doors that is great I've done alot of cars and when something like that happens it brings u closer to that car i love the headlights and the dash Jay was definitely impressed and Jays belt buying story just shows u anybody can catalog build a car but when u find a way to save that money its a high like no other i also can relate to his grandfather i lost mine a few years ago and he was great its ashame he didnt see and share the car with him but hes guiding him im sure hes got balls driving 3 states over in that car thanks for another great video Jay

That is an ultimate late model T. His dash is perfect for the era , the engine is smooth and powerful. A fantastic job and a work of art. I didn't know they changed the crankshaft in late 1927... I have a 27 T chassis, now I know what to do with it. It's a driver -

IMHO this is one of the best Jay Garage episodes that I have seen, and I think I have watched most of them. The car...and the kid (well, he's not really a kid anymore) made this most enjoyable to watch. Jay and Clayton definitely bonded over their love of old cars, and I give credit to Clayton for not getting starstruck, and just talking to Jay, one gearhead to another.
I'm so impressed by this guy. I'd say kid because he looks young, but he's mid 20s here. And who says "hot ticket"? Awesomeness He was definitely raised right. If only 10% of American youth were as impressive as this kid, we'd have nothing to worry about for future generations.

I could see you were leaving him to talk, and you were appreciating his knowledge about, and modifications on the T, which was really cool to see. Clayton knows Model T and A cars inside and out, all the improvements/enhancements, the backstories of all the inventors that figured out how to get more HP out of that engine block. Plus, the guy fits his build within a budget, but knows how much money it would take to do any and all variations. This was 6 years ago. I hope Jay and Clayton keep in touch and maybe Clayton can bring another cool build on. I applaud Clayton for involving his kids. Imagine being his son at 15 years old getting to drive this car.
You should be proud of it. So many car sports have out priced the average guy. I raced cars in the early 70s on a budget now what I had in my car is what it costs for entry fee. I don’t do it any more. Two thumbs up to you. Thanks I like it
Jay, projects like this really speak to me, I am a truck guy at heart but with a young family, two kids a wife and very limited budget I have yet to fulfill my dream. I want to build a truck, I have a soft spot for Ford and Chevy. I once had a friend who restored a 47 Ford pickup with a Chevy 350 under the hood. Always thought he was pretty smart, the best of both worlds. I want either a Chevy or Ford, pretty much the period 1972-1987 , I dream of a stock restoration with air conditioning and brakes being the only major mods. I want it to be my daily. Clayton’s T was an awesome example of what even a young guy can do! Maybe one day my will time will come!

Jay is a class act; always has been. Most older car guys would have talked down to someone like Clay. He knows his stuff; and Jay never contradicted him; and respected his knowledge; despite his young age; and maybe saw Clay as a version of his younger self. Clayton defiantly has my respect. I'm 54; with way more means than he has; but no where near the balls to just do it like he has.
The kid is more wiser than his years. Somebody needs to pick up the torch of car wisdom when Jay does retire. I do believe that Jay will die underneath a car that he was working on.

Usually the guests make or break these shows for me, this has to be the best guest I've seen in Jay's garage.
This show is the highlight of his career. In terms of amazing content and doing what he loves. This is what the new generation doesnt have. A stand up guy with good values

Amen! This and the 1964 Honda S600 Hot Rod are my two favorite Jay Leno Garage videos. ...well, that is unless you could bring back the old video from the archives of the early 20's green W.O. Bentley with the round tail. The audio of starting it up and hearing the overrun while driving was the best.

Better than just about every car I've ever seen brought to the show. Definitely in the top 5 of all time.
My Grampa told me so many stories about hopping up the Model T's in the 30's and 40's. They used Rajo (sp?) heads, Winfield carburetors, Ruckstal rear ends, etc. They would channel the bodies over the frames, etc. He used to tell a story about the Constable in Long Beach who couldn't catch their hopped up t's in his patrol car (I think it was a Dodge). Well, one day he got a Ford V8 and said "now I can catch you guys". Well they baited him into chasing them and he wouldn't give up and blew the engine in his car. My Grampa and a buddy held a speed record at the Muroc Dry Lake for Model t's for awhile. Good Stuff!
This is really a good example of commitment and genuine mindful thinking of having fun on a budget. Great job. And the door story makes even more lovable.
This episode inspired me to start looking, and get one of these cars. I'm 77. When I was a young teenager I was fascinated by what I called Old Time cars. I pressured my dad, and he and I hunted around in Wisconsin and somewhere in Tennessee, and never came back with one. Thank you, Jay, for the affectionate review; it's never too late.

Well, I plan to wrench about on a few cars, make them nice. Add some performance parts and not carefully measure absolutely every stat about it. Just make it look, sound and feel nice, the way it used to be!
Jay, you should have more cars and owners like these on your show! I especially love it when the owner knows what the heck he or she's talking about! Anyone have deep pocket can buy a flashy car and tell you stuff from the catalog, but not a lot of owners can tell you how he or she builds it.
This is one of the few guys that came to the show that was actually great to listen to and didn't make you want to fall asleep half way through.
Wow didn't expect this to be my favorite episode, owner or car of all of these shows I watch over and over. That was such a great episode for som many reasons.
OK! Two things: I want this car! and 2, I'm beyond impressed with this young man! I'lm 74, a car guy and life long automotive enthusiast. The car is just perfect, and Clayton's knowledge and attention to detail are on point!
it's not about what it looks like or how fast it goes but how much fun you have owning and driving it.
Another reason why Jay's channel is the best car show in tow. This kid's T model story is by far, more interesting than some a rapper explaining a subwoofer in his McLaren.
Now 88 - But I Loved it. Driving my 1921 T original to school was a joy in 1945, so buying it for 50.00 but going into the service in 1946 sold it for 75.00. I've never gotten over feeling so bad for not keeping it.

What a great guy. So often it's a curator or builder showing up and they are not nearly as interesting to listen to. This guy is deeply and personally involved and has knowledge pouring out of him. Also he was not stuttering and camera shy. It is funny that Jay mentioned Jonathan Ward, because he reminded me of the episodes with Ward, he too speaks naturally on camera and just pours information and love of his craft.
I hope Jay keeps in touch with him, I know I would.
Of the hundreds of episodes i've watched all these years i think this is probably the one that made me apreciate and want to have the car showed more.

That is wonderful and inspirational. My Father is 81 years old and fulfilling a lifelong dream. He is currently building a hot rod from a 1926 model T (T bucket). This thing sat upside down in a field for over 50 years, but as a testament to the quality of the vanadium steel, the body is still straight and solid. As the car had no drive train in it, he is putting in the LT1 engine and complete drive train from a 1992 Cadillac Fleetwood, and the front end from a 48 Ford. He custom built a new frame for it, and is putting in the back seat from an '88 Lebarron. It fits perfectly as the front seat for this model T, like it was made for it.
I am so proud of my father for realizing a life long dream at his age, and am constantly surprised to see the cars progress every time I visit.
Is there any Model T left in his car?

The modifications Clayton made are not only chosen well, but make the car much more driveable. Sorry they didn't discuss the suspension, because it looks like a major mod, but I guessed it when Jay had to almost get on the ground to crank it!

In 1962 our father bought a 1926 Ford touring car, and my two brothers and I were introduced to the Model T Ford. Dad passed away last year, but three years ago he surprised us all by buying another '26 tourer. Riding with him into a busy intersection could be terrifying. He'd say, "O, they'll stop." Thank God they always did!

One of my favorite episodes. I've watched it half a dozen times. It would be cool
to have Clayton back on the show to see what he's done in the past seven years.
I grew up two houses away from probably the richest family in our little town. The guy's father and grandfather had worked in the local paper mill and they invented, patented and manufactured the first pneumatic air shafts for rewinding paper rolls. He had three sons, the youngest of which was my age. When i was about twelve i went with my friend and his brothers and dad to pick up a 1925 T that was about 10 miles away at a country home. Thus began my education of T's and my interest in classics as the middle brother had a '48 Ford Businessman's Coupe he bought and did the back yard flathead hot rod trip. He still has the car today at 70 years of age although it is much updated with an LT1 350. His oldest brother had a 1940 Chevy 2dr. sedan we would borrow and my friend and me would cruise the countryside and around our local lake. His dad was frugal for his means to the point that he dynamighted the sand stone and excavated a basement under their house in the 60's. The T got a budget resto and also a 1930 Ford Victoria to a much higher standard than the T. I must say i have always felt fortunate having the child hood i had in a town of about 5,000 in the Pacific Northwest as i spent much of my childhood around that family.
This guy has to be one of my favorite guests he new his stuff wasnt cocky about it and the part that woulda flipped me out was the doors that is great I've done alot of cars and when something like that happens it brings u closer to that car i love the headlights and the dash Jay was definitely impressed and Jays belt buying story just shows u anybody can catalog build a car but when u find a way to save that money its a high like no other i also can relate to his grandfather i lost mine a few years ago and he was great its ashame he didnt see and share the car with him but hes guiding him im sure hes got balls driving 3 states over in that car thanks for another great video Jay
This guy has great camera presence. He also really knows his stuff. I'm going to show this to my son as an example of how someone has creativity, knowledge and can be a generally nice person on top of it all.

That is an ultimate late model T. His dash is perfect for the era , the engine is smooth and powerful. A fantastic job and a work of art. I didn't know they changed the crankshaft in late 1927... I have a 27 T chassis, now I know what to do with it. It's a driver -

IMHO this is one of the best Jay Garage episodes that I have seen, and I think I have watched most of them. The car...and the kid (well, he's not really a kid anymore) made this most enjoyable to watch. Jay and Clayton definitely bonded over their love of old cars, and I give credit to Clayton for not getting starstruck, and just talking to Jay, one gearhead to another.
Aaand, how cool would it be to have Jay drive your car, make him sign it and then have it forever!!! just way too cool!!!

Clayton knows Model T and A cars inside and out, all the improvements/enhancements, the backstories of all the inventors that figured out how to get more HP out of that engine block. Plus, the guy fits his build within a budget, but knows how much money it would take to do any and all variations. This was 6 years ago. I hope Jay and Clayton keep in touch and maybe Clayton can bring another cool build on. I applaud Clayton for involving his kids. Imagine being his son at 15 years old getting to drive this car.

Jay, projects like this really speak to me, I am a truck guy at heart but with a young family, two kids a wife and very limited budget I have yet to fulfill my dream. I want to build a truck, I have a soft spot for Ford and Chevy. I once had a friend who restored a 47 Ford pickup with a Chevy 350 under the hood. Always thought he was pretty smart, the best of both worlds. I want either a Chevy or Ford, pretty much the period 1972-1987 , I dream of a stock restoration with air conditioning and brakes being the only major mods. I want it to be my daily. Clayton’s T was an awesome example of what even a young guy can do! Maybe one day my will time will come!
