This song is about how people can lose their identities and become just like everyone else. Some lyric analysis:
"Life is a waterfall,we're one in the river, one again after the fall." - We all start off the same and we all end up the same.
"Swimming through the void, we hear the words,we lose ourselves, but we find it all." - As we go through life we are told lessons, but we ignore them. We forget who we really are in the mix of seeking the synthetic lifestyle, and that's the price to lose who we really are.
"'Cause we are the ones that wanna play, always want to go, but you never want to stay." - We always want to be part of the scene. We strive for what we want and when we get it, it still does not satisfy.
"And we are the ones that want to choose, always wanna play, but you never wanna lose." - We want and want. We do whatever we can but if trouble is ever near we do whatever we can to maintain innocence.
"When you lose small mind you free your life." - When we stop to see the full picture is when we really have control of our lives.
"Life is a waterfall, we drink from the river then we turn around and put up our walls." - We take and take and in the end we give nothing. This shows how greedy, oblivious and inconsiderate people can be

This is how deep SOAD is: this song is about ancient understanding of human existence. That life is a temporary separation from the infinite One -
    Life is a waterfall
    We’re one in the river
And one again after the fall
We come from the infinite One, in the waterfall (life) we experience separation (like droplets falling) and when we “die” we reunite with the One. We do not cease to exist, we are just back to the One. The wisdom is to know this and let go of attachment to this particular life.
We are the ones that want to choose
Always want to play but never want to lose
We want to experience life and separation (it’s literally a game) but when we are in our life without the wisdom of knowing this isn’t all there is to it, we become attached to this particular life. This creates suffering and keeps us in a lower understanding of existence.
When we lose small mind we free our life
When we let go of attachment we are free to have direct experience of the gift of life.
    Lose small mind, eternal prize
This is the concept of “graduating” to heaven, when we learn to live without attachment within a lifetime. EDIT: should add experiencing "Heaven on Earth" is knowing that we are One and experiencing Oneness in a direct way (not just as a mental construct) while living a life

The guitarist Daron harmonises in most of the songs after this album. It's almost a 50/50 split on vocal duties. Can't wait for you to hear those harmonies.
Daron will definitely be a contender for the guitarist tournament as well.

  • @The_Fat_Turtle
    @The_Fat_Turtle 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Aerials lyrics feature a lot of Zen Buddhist teachings and philosophy, like the concept "We are one in the river and one again after the fall", which is about how our souls come from a giant river, as we are born into the world, we become individuals like individual drops of water as it falls down the water fall. Then we fall to the bottom and become one with the river again after we die.
It's also featured in the lyric "when you lose small mind you free your life", as small mind is a concept in buddhist teachings that is pretty self explanatory. Our minds are small before being expanded, we are narrowly focused and narrowly existing.
I was reading about Zen Buddhism at the time when this album came out, so I always connected deeper with this song because of that.

A couple of things to note is that Serj wasn't classically trained. Idk why so many people say that when Serj has stated many times that he had no formal training when they started the band.
Also Daron Malakian is the member who writes most of the music. They said that he wrote probably 95% of the lyrics for the band.

The "Always want to go but we never want to stay" is a so recognizable human behavior, you know, "Are you going to that party?- Yeah !", "Are you gonna be there, - Of course!", but once you're there, it's actually boring and you immediately start planning to leave and search for some other place to go and so on..All the fun is in the process of preparing to have fun that never actually happens. I just saw the very first episode of Seinfeld the other day where he puts it soooo in perspective.
And the "~Want to choose but we never want to lose" is to me we're all screaming for our right to choose, but only if it's easy choices, without needing to take any responsibility for what we decide.

So many bands have written music about awakened, or enlightened states, specially gojira and tool. I love this song because it parallels hindu non dual awakening (where you realize you are everything and nothing) nothing is eternal accept spirit.... You are eternal and all.other things ephemeral. I see what he is saying about when you find that state where you quit holding yourself down into a lower state by labeling everything and get there, everyone is searching for that state of bliss whether they know it or not and then they still want to play in life's dramas. You can't have both all the time. You either are it, or your not. When you get there you realize what you are (indestructible spirit), but the egoic mind cannot grasp it, so if you come back down to the supposed real world, you aren't in it, but you still have memories of a ton of experiences... The word is the logos in gnosticism, the one sound, the thing from which all things arise and all beings arise. When you are in it, you have no ego (no mind).... You never lose mind, but instead you don't identify with it. I have hit these states briefly at times, but then if you aren't established, ego clamps down harder than ever, as if it (as a self defense mechanism), doesn't want to die. It's a paradox.

I think it's referring to the sun and how it sees all. "When you lose small mind you free your life" is to broaden your sights just like how the sun sees all. The sun sees how divided we are and cruel we ate to one another. " life is a waterfall, we drink from the river then we turn around and put up our walls." You were my man's like pots and pans UNTIL you got your cup of success then you switched up. You turned around and divided us with boundaries. Or how the US (and others) draw imaginary lines.

Wait til you find out the guitarist wrote pretty much every aspect of these songs and puts out his own great music with his very own distinct voice

Try Violent Pornography by System. It's got some of their fastest vocals and is just a fucking awesome song.

Poor Corey, you had to choose this perfect gem of a song, one of their masterpieces, where Serj is at his best to go against him. It´s a KO for Serj. Not that it was needed. Don´t get me wrong, Corey is very good, I love his music and his growls and screams are top notch, but Serj is just at another level singing wise: He can do the screams and the growsl but then his cleans, his harmonies, his falseto, his high notes, are just things Corey can´t do. It´s not even a competition. Good reaction!

I've been meaning to ask, what is the meaning on your necklace, Hollywood? It looks like the symbol of the 3 deathly hallows from Harry Potter on here but I could be wrong lol.

If you wanna do a "tournament" of best vocalists, you can't leave out Till Lindemann, so if you want to check out one of his best live performances, you absolutely have to check out "Rammstein - Mein Herz Brennt (Piano Version) - Hurricane Festival 2013 - Proshot".

🦋 I agree with TiffanMae both💁‍♀️ of Today's artists are great! But then again last weeks was the same. 🤷‍♀️ I'll leave final votes on those picky individuals. Either way it's all good with me. 😋 I'm just enjoying the Ride in this Musical Journey 😏 You guys are Taking everyone on.
