  • Just to the east of the River Wensum, these two roads have an interesting story to tell. This video also asks questions on behalf of subscribers, and if you can help, please comment in the TH-cam comment section below.

    Thanks for this history of the area where I used to live when I was teaching and researching at UEA. I have fond memories of riverside walks and a pint of real ale at the Rosary. Annie

    Another sublime video thanks. I remember playing in the derelict gas works in the late 70s, Ridgeway's cycle shop on Bishopbridge Rd, playing in the derelict house that was the site of the new St. Matthew's Church where we married in 1991.

    Thankyou John. Many memories there and some things I have learned. As you know I was born at The Mount in 1950 when it was Dr Calvin Wells surgery before he moved to 75 Thorpe Rd. My mother was caretaker receptionist and had a flat in the building. Remember the Rosary Tavern actually advertised off licence sales of beer where you bought your own jug. Further along Rosary Rd at the bottom of Hill House Rd was the coach and horses pub where I had my first drink with my late dad. The area between Hill House Rd and the Cemetary was heavily bombed in the war and i grew up from 1953 in a new house on Ethel Rd. At the bottom of Ethel Rd was Charles & Violet Knight's grocery shop with a dentist opposite next to the entrance to the cemetary and then Claude Benton's chemist and post office on the corner with Thorpe Road and the Norwich City Supporter club opposite. Then further along Thorpe Rd was the Lansdowne Hotel with a methodist chapel opposite and a garage.

    The story of Riverside Road and the Inner ring road is a bit complicated. Yes, you are right to say it is the official line of the inner ring road, but that's only half the story. In 1990 or thereabouts there was a plan to complete the inner ring road, which would have taken the Rosary Road route from the Ketts Hill roundabout for one of the carriageways, with Riverside Road forming the other half of the dual carriageway. All that was rejected and the plan abandoned. That was the end of the 1945 inner ring idea, except it wasn't.
    What happened instead is the Whitefirars / Tombland /Prince of Wales Road route has become a sort of parallel inner ring route, in effect splitting the inner ring around the cathedral grounds. Which is why there's such traffic chaos at Foundry bridge, where the two halves recombine.
    But the story of Riverside Road is also the story of Tombland as regards traffic and is why what should be the architectural jewel in the crown of Norwich - Tombland - isa traffic choked mess.

    • @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich
      @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very interesting Derek, that proposal would have changed the area completely. Meanwhile as you say Whitefriars/Tombland has become an unofficial route. Thanks for commenting so helpfully.

    Before I forget to mention it, That engraving from 1829! So beautiful and detailed. Loved the Library woods too with the Lending library and the Chatting Log. These are only two highlights from this video. I've enjoyed the voice over enormously. So clear and calm- easy listening. This is my first video I have watched John, there will be many more. What an incredible researcher you are. Chapeau! 🙏 🇳🇿 🙋‍♀️ 🇳🇱

    On a slightly different tack, when I was an art student in Norwich in 1977 I seemed to remember a fish and chip shop run by Arthur Valori, I think it may have been called the Square Deal, and I'm pretty sure it was somewhere up timber hill, but could be wrong. hope someone has a photo of it they can post . Thank you for this great little series !

    • @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich
      @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you - Valori had several shops, one of which might have been on Bishop Bridge Road come to think of it. Definitely one on the bottom of Grapes Hill (see Lost Norwich - Grapes Hill), but as for Timberhill, I've had a look at the George Plunkett photos, but can't see one. That's not to say there wasn't.

    Mary Ann Skepper (1831 - 1904) who lived at The Mount is buried in Rosary Cemetary. She is described as "of independent means". She was related to Breame Skepper of Oulton Hall which was bought by George Borrow when Breame died and I think that is when she moved to The Mount.

    Your extensive use of old maps and photographs made it very easy to see how this part of Norwich has changed. For all I know you may have featured it in your video on Norwich City football grounds but there's a sculpture outside some new housing marking the location of the Nest.
