The year I was born! Lovely to see St Augustine pool. I remember swimming lessons there in the 1970s and many Saturday mornings with my mates daring each other to jump off the high board. Great memories.
Wow, as someone that loves history I love this kind of stuff. It's always so fascinating seeing how cities were many years ago, and how they compare to now. Great video John, we're excited to see more. Keep up the great work! 😊
I used to go with my grandfather to buy cattle, when the livestock market was next to the castle, and whilst your videos are delightful, they do make me remember my age, as I recall what places looked like in those days.
Love this. Only just discovered these by a friend sharing on Facebook. I’ve been here half my life this year and enjoy learning about the city I love to call home
Great trip down memory lane - can’t believe the difference where the Grove Stores were! Remember a lot of the other locations looking like that when I was a kid, particularly Peter Robinsons, The Mecca and London Street. Funnily enough, I did my dissertation at university on the pedestrianisation of London Street as it was historically significant in town planning terms for the UK. Keep up the excellent videos.
Great video, as always. Having moved away from Norwich many years ago now, I find it easy to get lost when I visit. These scenes really help me get some perspective. Thank you!
Ronnie G. I visited the Great Eastern Hotel twice in about 1958, the public bar on the corner by the balcony and Prince of Wales road is the only drinking house I ever went in which actually had sawdust on the floor. Round the corner was a lounge which had whicker chairs, and baskets with something like bamboo growing in them, shades of Singapore perhaps. Sadly, it appeared a bit run down.
Thank you for taking the time and considerable effort to bring us another great upload, really brings back some great memories of how things used to be although some of these had already gone in my childhood, Brilliant, Thanks.
Thanks John, another trip down memory lane. I don't remember the prefabs in Norwich, but remember well visiting my Grandmother in Beccles, living in the same prefabs. Its obvious some thing have changed for the better, but not sure all the changes have, not many empty shops in the sixties
I think you've mentioned before about this smells that take you back. For me the most glorious smell was when walking behind Mecca with the breeze coming from the chocolate factory mixing with freshly roasted coffee. When you put up the Mecca picture I could smell it.Thank you. Then the windy bus station.Seldom had any money left to visit the station cafe for a warm up.
I've been wondering about those carvings of Defoe and Caxton on the former Wimpy Bar, now I know! Very interesting and informative as always, John. In my home town of Ipswich there are still some prefabs in use. I've been in one and it's like going into Dr Who's Tardis.
Great vid. Thank you. Remember a few pints being whacked down at the Rat and Parrot. Amazing how streets have adapted through time. Shame we lost St Augustines pool but there were others by then. Hi from Thailand...again.
As an art student in Norwich in the late 70s I seem to remember a place either on Brigg st or Haymarket called the Mancroft Wine vaults, but can find no evidence of it now, I'm sure I didn't imagine the place !
I cannot believe how shabby Norwich looks in the video. I often visit Norwich, and it has a lot of very pretty views not seen in this video. It is worth a visit!
Definitely worth a visit! My intention was certainly not to show the less impressive side of the city, more to illustrate some of the changes over time.
Apparently the site of the Great Eastern hotel had a clause that it must always be a hotel that occupies it. Hence the Hotel Nelson that replaced the Great Eastern.
Enjoying all of your videos John, great job! Wondering if you would be interested in doing another about harford hall and estate where the tuckswood estate is now if you have any archives? I’ve searched everywhere online and found very little info, not even one photo. Regards Matt.
Beautiful! I really struggle to not lament what we have lost! - but these videos inspire to ensure we keep and adapt what we have!! Thank you
Thank you! "Keep and Adapt". That should be a slogan!

Thank you, yes the pool certainly holds some memories!
As someone who loves history, it’s absolutely wonderful to see what my home city was like so long ago! This was a brilliant video, John 😁
Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and I appreciate your comment 👍

Thank you very much. Two years ago, I thought I "knew Norwich", but I have learnt so much in researching these videos.
I used to go with my grandfather to buy cattle, when the livestock market was next to the castle, and whilst your videos are delightful, they do make me remember my age, as I recall what places looked like in those days.
Thank you - and my apologies for making you feel your age!
invoking some fantastic childhood memories, growing up in the 70s waiting at the old bus station and having a Wimpy
Thank you, I'm glad it brought back memories.
Omg judt stumbled upon this channel. Norwich born and proud
Glad you stumbled this way!

Another excellent historical video Mr. Atkins - !
Glad you enjoyed it
Love your channel. Thanks
Thank you Dave, means a lot.
Nice video. It shows very clearly what we had.....and what we lost.
Thank you. Yes indeed, lots of changes.

What a nice memory.

Fantastic. Thanks so much for adding your memories Ronnie.
That was very interesting and well put together John. Born in Norwich in 1948 I have spent most of life here and now retired in a Norwich suburb.
Thanks very much, you would have recognised most of those then!
Great video, still remember jumping off the top platform at St. Augustines, thanks
Thanks - that's one thing I most definitely wouldn't do!
Great idea for a video. I like seeing the vintage photos and new age videos side by side.
Thanks Ryne, I really tried to match them exactly in this video.
Thank you for taking the time and considerable effort to bring us another great upload, really brings back some great memories
of how things used to be although some of these had already gone in my childhood, Brilliant, Thanks.

Thank you for this wonderful trip down memory lane. You matched the present and the past photo locations perfectly,
Thank you for noticing! That was my particular aim with this video.
Thanks for another great and interesting video John ,much appreciated
I'm glad you enjoyed it Clive 👍

Yes the empty shops at the moment are a bit of a blot on the landscape. Let's hope they fill up soon!

That's a lovely recollection, thank you Carol.
Maccintoshes?
@@MrShazaamable definitely 🍫
Thanks for another interesting video, John.
Took me a while to watch as I was constantly flicking back and forth.
Keep troshing on!
Thanks Adrian. I couldn't do it without the wonderful old images.
Thanks again John, I remember prefabs on Wellington Lane and on Napier Street which was off Lothian Street.
Thanks, yes they were all over the city.
Amazing changes. Thanks, John
Thanks John, hope you're keeping well.
Great seeing a pic of st augustines swimming pool, many a day in the 70s and 80s spent there trying not to drown.
Me too!
Always fascinating videos - thank you, from a relative newcomer to the city.
Thanks for your comment. Hope you like being a newcomer here. It's a welcoming place.
What a lovely trip back in time! Thank you for your research! Also, enjoyed the apartment video with Lucy and Julie as your camera lady 😊~Cara
Thank you - it was fun to do the apartment video. Lucy's editing was superb.
Thank you for your lovely comment - we had so much fun filming that video! 😊
Thanks, a nice trip down memory lane.
Thank you for commenting
Thanks you for suggesting Attractions
Thank you.

Thanks Geoff. Those prefabs have done incredibly well to last this long!
Great vid. Thank you. Remember a few pints being whacked down at the Rat and Parrot.
Amazing how streets have adapted through time.
Shame we lost St Augustines pool but there were others by then.
Hi from Thailand...again.
Hi Keith. Yes lots of adaptation over a 60 year period, and more needed post pandemic to restore the city a bit. 👍
Very educational John.
Thank you Tim. Hope things are good with you.
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich All good thanks John and l trust that things are good for you too.
@@timbaldry8072 yes fine thanks
As my dad was a printer for the Eastern Daily Press I remember Prospect House being built and they moved from Redwell Sreet
I'm doing a video early in the new year about London Street. Seem to be lots of newspaper connections there too.
As an art student in Norwich in the late 70s I seem to remember a place either on Brigg st or Haymarket called the Mancroft Wine vaults, but can find no evidence of it now, I'm sure I didn't imagine the place !
I think this is what you remember, sadly this doesn't say very much about it. norfolkpubs.co.uk/norwich/mnorwich/ncmva.htm
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Thanks for that ! I knew I was going crazy.

My aunt lived in one of those prefabs on Ketts Hill
Thank you. I see that since making this video, the area has been fenced off and housing will be put there.
Great video!
Thanks Jo!
Apparently the site of the Great Eastern hotel had a clause that it must always be a hotel that occupies it. Hence the Hotel Nelson that replaced the Great Eastern.
Very interesting, thanks Simon. I'd not heard that.

Thanks Matt, that sounds a bit of a challenge! I'll see if I can find anything, but it may take a while.
This is so interesting to watch
Thank you - early in 2023 I'll do a similar one, looking back to the 1970s.
Such a shame that we lost all those beautiful 17th century buildings to be replaced by eyesores
Thanks for your comment. Sadly some of the present day architecture in this area is merely functional.
Year of my birth. A lot of things were better then.
Happy 60th this year!
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Thank you.
How did you find all these old photos? Fantastic collection
Mainly from George Plunkett's archive, but also from Picture Norfolk. They have been my main sources.
Great video
👍 thanks!
Interesting as always John. Whatever happened to Wimpy Bars?
There are still some Richard. King's Lynn has one, and maybe Yarmouth too.
The bus station is the only one I've ever known that's built on a hill - !
I'm not aware of too many bus stations....maybe Cromer is on a hill?
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich I would class Cromer's bus station as being on a very gentle slope at most, but not the daft hill of Norwich - ! 😄
@@simongee8928 fair enough! But I shall now look at bus stations in a new light!
awesome
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great vid, alot of change, sadly I think 60 years from now most of it will be under water lol
Hope not!
Once again nothing is an improvement on how it use to be in my opinion
Thanks, I find it hard to disagree!
totally destroyed norwich with ugly buildings.they pulled the beautiful ones down.that made me sad.thanks
Thanks for your comment 👍

Sorry, that's over my head!
Some lovely buildings lost to some very ugly late 60's/early 70's architecture.
I'm afraid so! Thanks for commenting.
