Forgot one good one; If you are in the right lane and not managing your speed, and a truck that is begins to pass, don't suddenly wake up and hammer down. I think we have all been witness to this annoyance. (Looking at you, Amazon Contractors.)

Much love to you Truckers you are the life line of the countries you drive in. I drive my mini semi a cummins pickup I can’t tell how many times I go to pass on the left and people speed up to not let you or they insist they have to be upfront then freakin slow down for no reason in front of you.
I drove with Schneider, seeing the country at 60mph. I would always watch out for others coming around me just for that reason and would lay off some to help that transition go quicker lol

This is a no shitter. Many times I have gone from something like 50 or 55 to 75 mph trying to pass some fool, usually a 4 wheeler. Often on a 2 lane. Occasionally a truck will step it up a little on a divided 4 lane, it's annoying.
Sadly, people aren't taught basic manners and respect as children. The world has become a "me first" society, and that goes way beyond trucking.

A truck going 60mph on the right lane which is fine... but as soon as you try to pass him he speeds up now your doing 75 mph and still cant pass him...
There's a flip side to this same scenario, however.
You're in the right lane running a steady 65 on cruise and it's flat land so your speed never wavers.
Some hammerhead running 67 or so decides to pass you and is holding up the rest of traffic so you bump cruise off and slow to 60 so he can get around and traffic can clear.
Said hammerhead nearly takes your front bumper off regardless of you making room for him and is now running a steady 62 in front of you with traffic gone.
So you wait to see if he's going to pick up speed back to 67 or so and let you get back to easy rolling at 65 but no this hammerhead is sticking to steady 62 now.
With no traffic you decide to signal and nose out into the left lane and get down the road away from this guy but no, now he starts to speed up again to keep you from passing.
TLDR a jackass is a jackass, doesn't matter if he started in the left or the right lane.
CDL schools aren't the only places that don't teach manners and courtesy anymore. Try households, education systems, popular culture and society at large.

I’m still very grateful to an off-duty driver who stopped to help me roll up my tarps. It was 23 years ago. It was windy out, and he was passing by and gave me a hand. I appreciate it to this day!
If you see someone at night backing into a spot do not sit there parked with your headlights facing them just turn your headlights off until they get stopped and then continue on they cannot see when you're blinding them with your headlights

I'm fixing stuff on my truck my self and carry tools with me all the time ... the f ELD it's what stopes me to help others when I see on the side of the road same truck like mine.. im pressed by the time made by ELD.

Yeah nothing worse than driving 55 in a construction zone and some 4 wheeler passing you at 55.1...
This is true , but there's also one thing too keep in mind WE ARE the professional driver's many of them just don't understand what we see and go through EVERYDAY and to be honest THEY don't care because they just do not know.
The problem now, and this isn't just truck drivers, is that nobody cares about anything outside their 5 foot bubble. Since you like stories, here's one about being helpful...
I used to drive, but I don't any more. Anyways, I was riding my motorcycle with a buddy from Vegas to Phoenix in the middle of the night. About 30 miles from Kingman, in the twisties, by buddy came up next to me and waved me over. We pulled over and I saw h was covered in oil. Apparently, when I topped off my oil in Kingman, I hadn't tightened my oil cap and it came off. I had been spraying oil out of the fill hole. My buddy said he'd go back to the gas station and see if he could find my oil cap. When he came back, he had found my oil cap, but it had been run over and was unusable. So, there I was, on the side of the road at 2am, with no oil cap and no oil. I had resigned myself to the fact that I was going to have to wait until morning and call a tow. About 30 minutes later, an empty car hauler came around the corner and pulled over in front of me. He came over and asked what was wrong, I told him the story and he asked where I was headed. I told him Phoenix and without hesitation, he said, "well let's get you loaded up". He gave me a ride and dropped me off at a hotel. I tried to pay him, but he refused. This happened when I was in my twenties. I'm 47 now and I've been paying it forward ever since.

Great story sadly that doesn't happen anymore.. if your broke down on the side on the road now you have to worry about the ignorant steering wheel holders running you over more than a tow

High beams is my pet peeve. If I click down to low beams to not blind you, shouldn't you do the same? and LED auxillary/fog lights are just as bad.
and the think they are "cool" drivers with the headlights off (maybe both bulbs are really not working) and the led driving lights shining in the trees!!
Some of those lights are really just that damn bright and should be taken out of every vehicle that has em. Mobile road hazard.

Agreed. I run overnight dedicated and about 60% of the truckers I see are running around with high beams on, or the trucker stop retina scorchers, not aimed right, then when you pass they all like to burn your eyeballs out by flashing their high beams as opposed to turning lights off then on again. Hands down my biggest issue. Second is the fuel island screw around.
@@Stokesman101 I run OTR at night after having to run 7 hours over my DOT drive time a few nights because there wasn't parking anywhere. I've come to the conclusion that they need to start making headlamps with Polarized lenses on them. That way, even LEDs won't be so damn piercing to our eyes.
This gentleman's video should be mandatory viewing for Everybody who wants a license to drive.
Here's a few more courtesy tips:
-Turn on parking lights in a dark tight dock for a fellow driver
-Turn headlights off when drivers backing up
-Slow down in the winter and stop tailgating cars and trucks
-Keep your fog lights off until needed
-When a driver flashed you in. Hit your interupts to thank him
-When you want to flash a truck in a night just simply turn your headlights on and off instead of blinding him with your high beams
-Dress professionally
I love those “drivers” that speed at 30 mph in a truck stop at night. No lights, no 4 ways. That’s just genius!
We could well do without those fools.
Class act! Imagine what the industry would be like if all the drivers had even half the class of this gentleman.

Sadly, someone like Dav has to tell newer drivers what they should already know.
Along with the Jake brake, the only time it is acceptable to blow a horn in a truck stop is when something is about to get hit. Yes, that means 24 hours a day. Just because your 14 is running down doesn't mean you have the right to disturb any other driver's mandatory 10. Remember, we're all in this together.

As a night time driver, I endorse this.
You mentioned signaling the passing driver when they're good to get back over into the right lane. However you forgot to mention DONT FLASH YOUR DAMN BRIGHTS AT NIGHT!
You know that little button on your steering wheel? The one that turns your lights off and on? THATS what it's used for, so you don't blind the damn driver ahead of you!
i know some guys bright up and down during daylight, on-off at dusk/night. what do you think?
I agree 100% with everything you said with one caveat, I often haul doubles. Fuel islands might be the only place I can be at that moment. I don’t like it but my choices are very limited. If there are empty pull thru’s or space along a curb, by all means I use it. What I would ask of everyone is that if you see doubles in the island, if able, get behind the other trucks and please accept my apology.
I always try to give the "you're clear of me" headlight blink or the "thank you taillights/4ways". Some trucks don't have a headlight blink switch though.
Couple of the negative things I see out here more and more. Truck Stop 500 to parking or fueling, passing another truck with > 2 miles to your exit, and matching a truck you're passing speed until he/she is boxed in behind another truck.
Writing this from my wife’s account, depending on the width not every state requires pilot cars for Oversized loads.
If that oversized is in the right lane and turns his left blinker on, I promise you there is some type of vehicle on the shoulder. Let them over, they will get back out of your way as soon as they clear whatever it is.
Also, when you pass an oversized load, give them extra room before you change back over to the right lane. Oversized has to be able to have a view of the shoulder, just remember that could be your wife and kids that’s trying to change a flat tire. If you have their view of the shoulder blocked then they have no time to react !

When I see them oncoming on a 2 lane highway I slow it down and hug the shoulder so they can feel better about going past me
Man you have the guy the oil he needed and did not accept payment... you got nothing to feel bad about. Good on ya for helping the man out.
My grandfather drove trucks and I heard his stories. When I was 19 I work at Mixon Trucking in New Iberia, Louisiana, as a shop hand. I'm glad that I had those experiences before I started driving.
When I got out of CDL school in 2014, my trainer didn't teach me any of that. In fact, the first night that I was in the truck he went to sleep in the back. It was winter time in Indiana and I was driving the truck at night in the snow through a construction zone. I was fucking terrified.

I'm glad I haul grain. Often, around big grain terminals, maybe 50 or 100 trucks can back up in lines. This is a great opportunity for people to show their best courtesy and helpfulness, which they, and I, often do. Many grain haulers are older guys, farmers or country folks and just seem to have better manners.
I’m guilty of turtle racing sometimes, but only when the driver in front of me won’t keep a consistent speed🙄 Turn on your darn cruise control already!!!
About those guys that have plenty of peddle and want to make you look like your holding up traffic by easing into their throttle just as your almost past them causing you to stay out their longer.
Agreed. If my cruise control is interrupted by a slower driver, I WILL go around them. I don't care how long it takes. 🤷🏾♂️

When everyone is courteous we all get where we're going more quickly.
There is no reason to run a jake brake in a residential area either people are trying to sleep in those areas as well
Hi! I just got my CDL A in mid December. Watching this video makes me feel very lucky that I went to the truck driving school I did, (E2CCB, Ashville, NY) because they did teach us those manners. They didn't just tell us, they hammered those points in especially the rule of NEVER HOLD UP THE FUEL LINE, and the LEFT LANE IS FOR SAFE QUICK PASSING NOT LONG HAUL DRIVING! Thank you for all the videos you make and share. I feel like you're videos are quality extensions of my driving education! They are very respected, and appreciated. Please keep them coming. You can never learn enough from someone's who's been where you're going! Thank you again!

I learned TALK, ACT, and DRESS PROFESSIONAL.Don't have an attitude at the shipper or receiver. Set the EXAMPLE. Keep your truck CLEAN and NEAT inside.

Also you forgot to mention that the driver is supposed to use Low Beam whenever there is another vehicle within 300' in front of him. People seem to forget that everybody needs to see where they're going.
I once seen a guy snatch CB Rambo out of his truck and kick his ass in front of all the other drivers.

How did he know it was him? The big reason there is so much shit talk on the CB is the anonymity of it. I mean unless you announce your truck and trailer no one would know.

Truckers were a unique breed back in the day...Friendly, Professional, Helpful, Knights of the road. That sure has changed! I’m not sure that I blame it on the schools though. I learned from my dad and oldest brother, thankfully, how to be all of those things. And when I’m in a 4 wheeler, I stop to help other drivers when I can. Some of them have been shocked, but I say “Just doing the right thing.” There’s a big difference between Truckers and Steering wheel holders. My brothers tell me stories all the time of when they’ve been out on the road and stopped to help someone. Good video! Glad you shared it.🤩

Great video as always Dave when I look back when I started driving in 1978 how the driver's treated each other then and how they treat each others now I can't imagine what it will be like in another 20 years this has to stop
people that drive other vehicles IE: motorcycles and 4 wheelers should have more respect for big trucks.
A lot of the time,when you,as an ungoverned driver,see 2 trucks "turtle racing",it's because the truck in the right lane refuses to maintain a consistent speed and also refuses to allow the driver to pass to get on with their day.
I've had a bunch of guys do stupid shit like try and hold me in the left lane for miles while intentionally matching speed with me to keep me there,I'm not going to ride behind some asshole who can't maintain 65 and is constantly making my distance radar beep because he keeps dropping to 63 to play a game,if they were going the proper speed to begin with,I would've never made it up alongside them in the first place.
Just like how people get upset every time they see a 65 truck hit the hammer lane because they don't want to be slowed down,I don't want to be slowed down either.
Kudos regarding the passing lane comment. It is a PASSING lane. Get in it, pass, get back. I drive a lot between Louisville and Cincinnati. North of Carrollton , Exit 44 is very hilly. Almost EVERYBODY abuses the passing lane.
I'm glad to say that I've never done any of these. When someone's passing me slowly, I always slow down for them. It will cost you a couple seconds, big deal. I just wish they would do the same for me.

IMO, if you’re the only one at the pump, get your fuel , pull up, go inside, do your thing, but quickly, cause it takes about 10-15 min to fuel ( depending) , so by the time the next guy is ready to move you should be done doing what you had to, however like you said if you’re going to hit the food places,, don’t be THAT GUY go park and walk back
Ive seen quite a few now that get fuel, pull up to let the next truck in and they go in and pay, get food, then a shower, and then come back as nothing happened. The confrontations afterward make good entertainment. Sucks for the truck stuck at the pump though.
Headlights in parking lots. When I first started in January 1991, if you piled into a parking lot at night you turned your headlights off.

Got my CDL back in Feb of this year. Dad drove for over 30 years and taught me everything you covered when I was a teenager.
I'm governed at 64 and go 62 for fuel mileage. I stay in the right lane. If its gonna more than 30 seconds to pass someone, I back it down and settle in. I got nothing to prove and I plan my trips for such occurances as best I can.
I will always be courteous to other drivers. Its just how I am. It's how I was raised. Gotta make the old man proud looking down on me.
When signaling to let someone back into a lane. Don't flash your high beams. Especially at night.
No need to blind someone.

This video needs to be broadcast at all trucking terminals and truck stops all day. This video should be the new law and order at truck stops. 99% of other truckers cut me off and ride my ass all day long it drives me nuts. I literally staryed driving 62 just so it takes them less time to get a distance again but now they cut you off and then slow down again. Maddening

Love this segment. Thank you. I ship horses around NA and some of the behaviour I see from truckers is scary- whipping in in front of me (my loads are more often than not loose box stalled horses and they do not know when I need to break, turn, speed up or slow down). However, most of my experiences have been awesome. Most truckers have been courteous, kind, signalled me in after passing them and thanking me after them passing me and me signalling them in.
That’s what the job is now. A job. Not a lifestyle like it was.

Here are some more Info for Modern Truckers; When Passing, we used to Flash the Headlights and when one truck cleared the other, the passed truck flashed his lights to lets them know it was safe. ALL vehicles when changing lanes you Signal the intent way before the Action. sometimes you forget to shut off the turn Signal, the old way to inform that person, is to turn on your left flasher a couple of times then do the same for the right side and back and forth until they shut their signal off.. Forget Tailgating even with another Truck.. Also Remember CBrs you have NO Legal FCC protections, Like a Ham radio operator, as even Cops have been known to confiscate CB's.. Some States like Indiana it is Illegal to drive in the Left lane, Passing only, and YES they Ticket you.. I highly recommend ALL today's Truckers get a Dash Cam{safety against Illegal Brake Checkers}(Better Brands VIOFO-A119S, Sharp 1080) and try and set it up at your eye height, and it wouldn't hurt to invest in one of the New WiFi Backup Camera's, and mount it on the back of your Trailer or Tractor.. Safe Holiday Driving.👍🎅🤶.
On the subject of passing, if you're loaded heavy, don't speed like hell downhill if there aren't places to pass going uphill and you're going 2mph
I experience 4 out of the 5 every week, courtesy is the only one I don't see, but it's the only one I wish I did see. Great tips
Some things my trainer is teaching me are, 1. Hang back at stop signs so drivers making right turns have room to turn. 2. Don't pull up to tight docks and make it difficult for other drivers to pull out while you go run into the shipping office.
I love 'Story Time' Ya know, anyone that remembers times like that is a good person because you remembered the situation and you grow from remembering and it's those ppl that don't remember situations like that, they're the ones that are going to grow into the assholes of the future. :-(
Being a local chicago driver, its drives me insane the guys who babysit the second lane. They see you coming up and don't even bother getting the hell out of the way
I was fortunate enough to ride with my old man in the 70’s and 80’s and really learned about some of courtesies that the old timers showed out there and thank the lord I didn’t have to go to one of these CDL schools to get my license but courtesy out here on the now just doesn’t exist or I should say that it’s a dying breed
slamming the jake as you roll by a bunch of guys sleeping is a classic one
I haven't had a CB in my truck for 10 years now and one thing that should have mentioned is if one tries to get over the other driver slows or speeds up so you can't get out turn only lane or to the fork in the road

I'm retired now, but this was a darn good video. For those of you not driving automatics, leave the engine brake off when you are empty or lightly loaded. Learning how to shift down while using mild braking may save your life one day if the fuse protecting the engine brake circuit pops. It is also a lot easier on the truck. Brake shoes are much cheaper to install than turbos. Seeing a driver with an empty flatbed cracking the Jake makes me wonder whether he just got his license that morning.
I recently took my car on a 4200 mile road trip. I found by and large the truckers were very professional. I did see a number of trucks that had trouble maintaining their lane, I think from exhaustion. I felt really bad for them. They must be doing a really tough job. Hats off to the truckers! Great Americans!!
Well said. When I started in the 70's, it was actually FUN! Unfortunately, respect and courtesy for others went right down the toilet. I'm retired now...thank God!

Unfortunately, this will fall on deaf ears. I wish it would change is only going to get worse. This is a global issue not just in trucking.
I learned from my Dad, like you said but I mostly learned just by paying attention to other drivers.

I always pull ahead after fuelling. If there is no truck behind me only then I go inside if I have to
Always wait for someone who is trying to park his truck and not crowd him
I would say the number one courtesy I always pay my fellow driver would be that I always let it go. Whatever they did. Riding my trailer.. cutting me off and slowing down.. side swiping me.. blocking the fuel island.. talking smack on the radio.. and all around driving like someone without a brain. I let it all go and try and just adjust my driving to stay away from them. I have learned that they will never learn. They don't care what they are doing wrong they don't care about others or the industry.. I think alot of it is the anonymity culture we have. The keyboard warriors. They are so used to being able to say or do whatever they want and not be seen. So they will cut you off and slow down because in their mind they are safe and there will be no repercussions.
I am still one of those drivers that flash my lights for passing to let them know the lane is clear. Also, I blink lights when I pass to say thank you. Not many drivers have a clue about that now.
One thing my trainer thought me is if you can move over a lane when another truck is getting on the freeway .
I agree on all the points you've given, maybe a couple more I'd like to add. First, it seems a lot of these rookies haven't excised the car mentality, when you're coming down an on ramp and they're in the right hand lane with nothing beside them in the hammer lane, they don't move over, so you either have to back off or drag race the idiot. Second, I haul Public Utility equipment and materials, like 20,000 lb cable reels and 75ft poles, I have a big Palfinger knuckleboom crane on my T880 and a lot of times I'm off-loading alongside busy highways. Now, my tractor has all the warning beacons, strobes and work lights, and most of my work is done between 10PM and 6AM, and these guys just don't move over. Just common sense and common courtesy there, it's not too pleasant trying to work with traffic going by 2 ft away at 65-70mph, not to mention there is, in most states, a "MOVE OVER" law that does apply to work trucks. Again, the hurry thing and distracted driver thing. I've always tried to treat other drivers with the same respect and consideration I'd like to be treated with by them, but these days that doesn't happen as often as I'd like.

You were talking about the jake brake in the truck stop. When I drove at night I used to kill the head lights (provided the lot was well lit) when looking for a spot just so I wasn’t shining lights into trucks unnecessarily. Also when you park, driver for the love of god please shut your head lights off. Makes it easier for another truck to back in not having lights shining in their face or in their mirror

Being quiet around truck stops(or other spots where trucks usually park) goes for four-wheelers as well. How many times I've stopped at a place to sleep and there's some kids playing around with their junkers, or some dude who leave their car playing loud music while their are in the station or while refeuling...
Unless and until the super trucker with 12 inch diameter stacks, no mufflers, and who idles all night long, stops, I don’t want to hear jack about truck stop noise.

I'm 28 and learned from my father who is 30 years otr and still driving also learned from the older guys lots of respect for the older guys!

AMEN Big Strapper!!! This is a topic that I feel has needed addressing for some time! The phrase “human decency” summarized it in a nutshell. People have also forgotten about common courtesy-treating others how you would WANT to be treated. New drivers often wonder why they are not shown respect from “old timers”, I think this has a lot to do with why that is. Going into a truck stop or shipper in pjs and flip-flops does not earn respect. Dress and act like a professional, and you will generally be treated like one. I generally get preferential treatment from shippers and receivers just because of how I carry myself, by showing respect. There was one point you missed about passing; that is the guy that speeds up while he is being passed. I see this EVERY day. Nothing is worse than passing a slow truck that suddenly hammers down to run alongside you!!! Thanks again for your channel.
Yes, accelerating when someone is trying to pass you is SO uncool! Four wheelers do that BS, not professional truck drivers. I get so mad when I come upon a truck doing 65 in a 70 but yet I have to do 75-78 mph just to get around him. Hey mental patients! If you do not want to be passed, go faster! Duh!
I live in Michigan and every time I go up North I encounter at least one Turtle race🙄🤣
Tips for all road users. A little point about cv rambos and any profession using the airways. Treat the radio as a hot mic. There is every probabilty a boss is listening or someone good with the boss is listening. If you value the job keep such familiarity for the bedroom.

Dave, I got to be honest "its hell" when your in a governed truck that 2mph over other drivers. My truck is governed at 75mph, I cruise in between 68 and 70. I use the 75 to pass and get out of the way, but until carriers understand that 65 or 66, is too damn slow. Then were guna have to deal with it.
One I've seen over 3 times in just one week is drivers pulling out onto the interstate from the shoulder right before an off-ramp. Why not play it safe and just take the off-ramp so they can get back on the interstate at a faster pace?

When you are passing and the other driver flashes his lights when you are clear to pull back in, have the courtesy to flash your body lights or 4-ways to say "thank you".
first have the courtesy to signal your intent to get over.I don't respect drivers who don't;.Just do your job safely is all I ask.
We should dim the headlights as a signal to pull in front, bright lights should be used as a warning.
Now if this could be spread like gospel that would be nice. An honorable mention, washing your truck in the fuel island. Some real special ed kids driving nowadays.
I've seen people do these things but I've never seen or thought that anyone could be selfish enough to use the jake in a truck stop.
Or even worse, the yahoo’s that honk their horns!

I think most of this can be attributed to “F U get outta my way, I OWN this road. You just drive on it”...only a few are actually ignorant of the “unwritten rules “
I've been guilty of the turtle racing as a newbie...so embarrassing. Governed trucks. I didn't do it intentionally I just figured I could pass the guy in front of me but noooo.
Sir, I am not a truck driver, but always enjoy your videos. This video, however, is special because you took the time to explain how common decency earns respect from others.
