First day out with it this morning. Weather dull, overcast and little contrast yet it brought out subjects brilliantly. Your points on autofocus are spot on. Many thanks for posting.
I completely agree with all you said. Maybe worth mentioning that it works really well with the 1.4 teleconverter, which is another feature that is missing in the 55-200mm lens. Apart from the faster aperture I can't really see a degradation in quality with the 1.4 teleconverter and it makes it more usable for wildlife photography (especially for birds in daylight). I don't have the 2.0 converter so can't comment on that, but most reviews recommend the 1.4 for aperture reasons and a slight reduction in sharpness with the 2.0.
I'm still trying to find a used converter at a decent price. Once I do, I will push out some tests. I like not to base what I say on what others say, that's why I didn't talk about converters too much.
Good video Luca, as I previously mentioned, before this lens came out I got the 16-80, 55-200 and 100-400. I find that in most cases if I need more than the 200mm I can “usually” get closer if I zoom with my feet, unless I know ahead of time that I will need that reach, then I’ll bring the 100-400, which because of the weight and size it isn't always in my backpack. Be well and stay safe.
Thank you for your feedback. I completely get your point and it makes a lot of sense. For me the 100-400 is out of the picture as it costs twice as much and I would use it only few times a year. I can't justify spending so much for such a little use. That's why the 70-300 is the perfect choice. For size and weight i can bring it with me basically always... And if I need more reach, I'll just crop. Sharpness is plenty enough to allow me to do this
Apparently the losing-focus-while-zooming was fixed in a recent software update. sometime in the past year i think. as of right now this video is 3 years old.
Don't rush it. As I said in my review, if you have the 55-200 the reasons to upgrade are few. The 70-300 is a better lens, don't get me wrong, but the 55-200 is already a good lens to begin with
@DiscoverwithD I just used it on the X-H2s after the update. It's massively improved, but still shows some degree of focus shifting. For photos it's a huge improvement, for videos it's better, but still unusable for zooming while recording
@@LucaPetraliaPhotography Thanks for your response. So if I have to choose between XF 55-200 vs this (primarily for video), which one would you recommend?
Luca, another terrific review! My results with the XF 70-300mm are mixed. I've captured some good action shots at a local skate park, but in other places focusing seems to be hit and miss. However, my biggest disappoint with this lens is the same for all Fuji lenses that I own: the image quality is mediocre. Mind you I love (LOVE!) the controls and aesthetics of my X-T4 and X-T30 cameras, but like the lenses, their performance falls considerably short of my Sony full frame hardware, which consists mostly of Sigma lenses. I compared the images captured with the XF 70-300mm vs. the comparably priced Sigma 100-400mm and, well, the Sigma produces clearer, more contrasty images. The same can be said of my other Fuji lenses vs Sigma/Sony; image clarity is demonstrably better on the Sony gear. And let's not even talk about zoom pumping, lens noise, shooting in aperture "sweet spots," and other negatives that don't compromise my Sony E-Mount glass. Don't misunderstand, I love the engaging process of shooting with Fuji cameras. And I'm tired (TIRED!) of carrying heavy full frame gear. I'm ready, willing and can (thankfully) afford to spend thousands on new APS-C gear, but I've reached the point where I'm not going to spend another dollar on Fuji hardware until their lenses improve.
Hi, I will soon give Sony and Canon a try. I don't know exactly when, but I will. I am curious to try their modern products (before Fuji i was shooting with Nikon Full Frame, namely D700 and F2.8 Nikkor Zooms). I am a bit surprised abut what you reported as I can expect some differences, but I definitely do not expect huge ones in image quality, while I do expect major differences in AF-C and tracking (and to a lesser extent High ISO). Especially with the crispness of the image I get with X-T4 and lenses such as the 70-300. It's not going to be soon, but I'll get back to you with my impressions. Thank you for your feedback. I really love when we can discuss, even from different starting points.
I had Sony, with some GMS lenses. I have now Fuji, a XT5, and im not noticing that. Image Quality is great in Fuji. Colors... much better than Sony. Autofocus is better in Sony.
Hello! I usually shoot at ISO200-800, this is optimal for this matrix and settings XT_3 JPEG , Sharpness "0" and NR "-2", rarely to ISO1600. Here the aperture is f/4 at 70mm, f/5 at 200mm , f/5.6 at 300mm. ISO1600 won't save in the evening, it should be higher .. In addition, the 55-200 used internal software sharpness correction, that is, deception... This can be clearly seen in post processing (Capture1) if you turn off the correction, you can see how the resolution in the frame drops, it looks like interpolation. Is XF70-300 exactly the same ?? ThanKs!
I didn't specifically look for how much correction the lens profile applies. I'll check and I'll let you know, but some degree of software correction is there for sure
Thank you. May I ask you why you want to swap it? Even if I prefer the 70-300 I would not recommend to swap unless it is for specific needs. If it's gas syndrome, well I'm not going to get in the way😅

Best review of XF 70-300mm.
Thank you Luca for a detailed review 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🍫🙏🏻

It was limited to some extent, definitely not solved
Excellent review, considering replacing my 55-200, but it is not available (in the UK in Oct/Nov 21) so I'll have to wait.

This lens will definitely be even better with a 40 mpx sensor i think?
Yes it does
I love this lens. Great review!
Thanks! Great lens indeed
Thanks Luca. This will be my choice to pair with the 16-80mm. I think it would round out a great travel kit along with the 35mm f2.
The 16-80 + 70-300 is my setup as well. Freaking awesome
@@LucaPetraliaPhotography I'll have to be good and wait for Babbo Natale to bring me one.
Ahahaha, then you have to behave in the next months
it is on sale too right now 16-80!
@@LucaPetraliaPhotography tamron 17-70 f/2.8 + xf 70-300 could be better!
I like your review of this lens. I only wish I could find one, it’s been out of stock at local camera store and even Amazon
It'll be back. If it is sold out, it means that the quality/price ratio is really high
Yeah, it's been backordered everywhere for about half a year. Maybe they will be back in stock by the end if 2022?
I am using it with XT5 and it resolves very well the 40mpx at 300mm
Confirmed
How does it perform in video on XT5? Have you used the latest firmware V1.1 that claims to fix the focus hunt issue during zooming?
@DiscoverwithD I just used it on the X-H2s after the update. It's massively improved, but still shows some degree of focus shifting. For photos it's a huge improvement, for videos it's better, but still unusable for zooming while recording

I would still go with this. They're the same price almost, this is more modern and had better closeup and reach

I have Fuji xt4. Planning to buy a zoom telephoto lens. Shall I buy 50-140 or 70-300? Please suggest. Thanks
It depends on what you plan on shooting. If it's wildlife definitively get the 70-300, if it's weddings, portraits of similar get the 50-140
