After he won the challenge, they took him to another location and coerced him to do a new challenge by winning the amount for a plane ticket home through mail in sweepstakes. He'd gotten really good at it won that in a few months but again, instead of taking him home, they took him to another location and acted as if it was another challenge. That's when they brought down the walls to a studio filled with people while he was naked.
People who experience long term abuse are always asked “why did you allow that to happen/for so long?”. And as a victim it’s one of the most devastating questions to be asked because you want to leave or seek help but it’s not as easy as you think.
It’s impossible to understand, especially when the abuser directly makes threats and punishments for any attempts to leave or seek help. Every situation is different and there’s different obstacles to getting out for everyone, but the only thing that matters once you have freedom is to heal. People ask those questions to have a sense of control for themselves. I think it’s natural to wonder about these things from an outside perspective and imagine the situation, but it’s impossible to put yourself directly in the victim’s shoes and just makes absolutely no sense to ask the victim such an insensitive question and make insinuations.
This guy deserves ALL the compensation. Japan needs to declare him an national icon and give him a palace to live in for the rest of his life. He should never have to want for anything ever again. He chose not to sue, but he absolutely could have sued. There was no contract at all (reality TV in Japan was very early back then.) Because they took away his clothes, he couldn't escape for fear or being arrested and charged with indecent exposure. Ever heard of Terrace House? The particupants there weren't really allowed to talk to each other unless it was in front of a camera. One of them committed suicide and supposedly producers were pressuring her love interest and her. Terrace House seemed more wholesome than other reality shows, but unfortunately, behind the scenes it wasn't.

I am Japanese. This program and this project were broadcast when I was a teenager. Im half and my mom always used to watch the variety shows. Even as a little kid it was weird to have the "im so fat" and "im so stupid" comedians. I'm the one who received Nasubi's helping and i actually met him after Tsunami happened. But i didn't know about his background what Nasubi has got something deeply traumatized his heart and a lot of things that he doesn't wanna feel. Despite under that circumstances he has been smiling all the time and then i thought he was the one who entertain us. I will never forget his helping and his lots of words that he made me smile when i was 6. I really proud of him.
I watched a documentary about him. I remembered seeing a news report about Nasubi when I was younger. Everyone thought of him as a joke. Honestly, I wanted to cry while watching it. But he turned out to be such a hero. I'm so glad I watched it.

OMG! NASUBI!! I was watching the tv show back in the 90s. He was recently spotted in Noto Peninsula after the big earth quake hit on the new year's day. He was volunteering and helping people,,, without saying he is Nasubi. Great guy.
Weird to victim-blame him to say 'how he let himself..." when he probably just signed the paperwork without reading, which we all do with terms and conditions. It's an experiment he hopefully was paid well for after the fact. As he put it, "traumatizing" which is good he is able to do something good, but still, yeesh, that sounds like a horrible experience.
He could have left or called for help at any time, so he let himself be controlled. No one was physically stopping him. And if you don't read the T&C, if you violate them and they're reasonable, you can only blame yourself. What they did to him was absolutely awful and they should all be ashamed and maybe prosecuted, but he was hardly innocent.
Japanese culture also played a part; to be agreeable and not "troubling" others with your own issues. I suspect he felt pressured by the director, the production team, the media, etc. as leaving would impact their lives.
To be fair it kind of sucks to overtly dramatize this and sensationalize the whole show as if its some kind of torture show just to sell this "tragic" documentary. The door was unlocked, and he had phone on the line just in case he wanted to give up. Not to mention he could've easily sabotaged the show just by acting distressed and refused to act in front of the camera, but he didn't give up, and continued being a funnyman in front of the camera because he was a stubborn comedian, and wanted to continue the challenge (despite it being started as a prank), which is something he admitted himself. The show did kind of go too far, and it did take advantage of Nasubi's willingness to be a star, but I also think the west sensationalizes this story a way too much to turn it into a real-life Hollywood drama, and cut out inconvenient parts like how Nasubi made up with the producer to a point they go out drinking together now.
Nasubi has one of the strongest mentalities I’ve ever seen . Imagine being in his situation . Most people wouldn’t last and they definitely wouldn’t be able to be as positive as bro was .
This doesn't mention the fact that they didn't do it just once, but twice. The first time was the 1 million yen goal, the second time he was taken to Korea and had to earn enough through sweep stakes to get him back home. And they lied to him repeatedly because he got so good at it that he was blasting through the goals faster than they expected. The first goal was an economy ticket, which he achieved in I think less than a month. Then they made it business class, then first class, with the excuse of "it's what he would want". Then when they finally took him back home, they put him in that box that looked like the room (which naturally he stripped again), then the audience was revealed. All while on a live stream. I'm glad Nasubi has been able to move past that nearly 2 year long ordeal and use his experience to help others, but far out dude he needs some serious compensation because that's a large part of his life he'll never get back.
I've always wanted to see this guy talk about what he went through. He honestly seems like a cool guy. I couldn't imagine being that vulnerable on live tv EVERY day.
I recall hearing about this guy from an episode of This American Life by NPR years ago. What they did to this man was wayyy beyond cruel. They literally broke him mentally on live TV.

As a Japanese I am really suprised this old famous tv show is on the oveseas media now. Back then, JP broadcast media had no morality at all. They wanted to do anything if they could get high viewer rate. Especially newcomer comedians or talents were treated very harsh because TV stations exploited their motivations to want to be famous, and I think this inmorality still extists in some extent.
Im from Quebec, Canada and the movie Louis 19 (1994) was the movie everyone thought The Truman Show stole their idea from. I feel very sorry for this man to have suffered such a horrible experience, much like animals in zoos, circuses, etc, just terrible.

The show was about him surviving off only what he won in sweepstake prices. The show runners didn't tell him it was broadcasted everywhere and took literally everything from him before he started. The isolation along with starvation even in a short amount of time made it more difficult for him to make logical choices which is why one of the excuses he said he didn't leave was he was worried he would be arrested for being nude in pubic, expecting the show runners to toss him out with nothing (which from what I've heard probably wasn't far from the truth). Overtime he actually was getting to the goal faster then the showrunners expected so they literally bullied and manipulated him into believing he would get nothing unless the time was extended so he agreed. After that he had to basically start over which only further messed with his mental state. The show runners even extended this second run futher by saying he had to win the money to get back home, adding more to the goal by changing the price for the plane ride. After all that, the isolation, the starvation, the manipulation, bullying, and the extra time added he just broke down to the point where he accepted it as his new life because he literally didn't believe he had a choice. The final scene where he's revealed in front of an audience proves that because as soon as he was brought into a new room he stripped down without being told to. He was mentally and physically broken. The fact the show runners aren't in jail is beyond my understanding.

The unethical aspects are that he was:
1) Made to get naked
2) Filmed and broadcast without his consent
3) Lied to about completing goals
4) And, unless I'm mistaken, saw none of the profits from his diary and adverts
What people can't seem to wrap their head around is that he was free to leave at any point, so the room setup itself is far from the worst of it.

I'm the one who received Nasubi's helping and i actually met him after Tsunami happened. But i didn't know about his background what Nasubi has got something deeply traumatized his heart and a lot of things that he doesn't wanna feel. Despite under that circumstances he has been smiling all the time and then i thought he was the one who entertain us. I will never forget his helping and his lots of words that he made me smile when i was 6.
I really proud of him.
I watched a documentary about him. I remembered seeing a news report about Nasubi when I was younger. Everyone thought of him as a joke. Honestly, I wanted to cry while watching it. But he turned out to be such a hero. I'm so glad I watched it.

OMG! NASUBI!! I was watching the tv show back in the 90s. He was recently spotted in Noto Peninsula after the big earth quake hit on the new year's day. He was volunteering and helping people,,, without saying he is Nasubi. Great guy.

This was sick and twisted. I can't believe it was legal and actually broadcast. Nasubi deserved better.
Weird to victim-blame him to say 'how he let himself..." when he probably just signed the paperwork without reading, which we all do with terms and conditions. It's an experiment he hopefully was paid well for after the fact. As he put it, "traumatizing" which is good he is able to do something good, but still, yeesh, that sounds like a horrible experience.
He could have left or called for help at any time, so he let himself be controlled. No one was physically stopping him. And if you don't read the T&C, if you violate them and they're reasonable, you can only blame yourself.
What they did to him was absolutely awful and they should all be ashamed and maybe prosecuted, but he was hardly innocent.
Japanese culture also played a part; to be agreeable and not "troubling" others with your own issues. I suspect he felt pressured by the director, the production team, the media, etc. as leaving would impact their lives.
To be fair it kind of sucks to overtly dramatize this and sensationalize the whole show as if its some kind of torture show just to sell this "tragic" documentary. The door was unlocked, and he had phone on the line just in case he wanted to give up. Not to mention he could've easily sabotaged the show just by acting distressed and refused to act in front of the camera, but he didn't give up, and continued being a funnyman in front of the camera because he was a stubborn comedian, and wanted to continue the challenge (despite it being started as a prank), which is something he admitted himself.
The show did kind of go too far, and it did take advantage of Nasubi's willingness to be a star, but I also think the west sensationalizes this story a way too much to turn it into a real-life Hollywood drama, and cut out inconvenient parts like how Nasubi made up with the producer to a point they go out drinking together now.

Nasubi has one of the strongest mentalities I’ve ever seen . Imagine being in his situation . Most people wouldn’t last and they definitely wouldn’t be able to be as positive as bro was .

This doesn't mention the fact that they didn't do it just once, but twice. The first time was the 1 million yen goal, the second time he was taken to Korea and had to earn enough through sweep stakes to get him back home. And they lied to him repeatedly because he got so good at it that he was blasting through the goals faster than they expected. The first goal was an economy ticket, which he achieved in I think less than a month. Then they made it business class, then first class, with the excuse of "it's what he would want". Then when they finally took him back home, they put him in that box that looked like the room (which naturally he stripped again), then the audience was revealed. All while on a live stream.
I'm glad Nasubi has been able to move past that nearly 2 year long ordeal and use his experience to help others, but far out dude he needs some serious compensation because that's a large part of his life he'll never get back.
I've always wanted to see this guy talk about what he went through. He honestly seems like a cool guy. I couldn't imagine being that vulnerable on live tv EVERY day.
I recall hearing about this guy from an episode of This American Life by NPR years ago. What they did to this man was wayyy beyond cruel. They literally broke him mentally on live TV.

Nasubi's situation is nothing like the Truman Show. The Truman Show is about a TV show about a man who has no clue that everything around him is fabricated and not the real world. Nasubi signed up for the show. He knew that it was a TV show. He just didn't know it was broadcast live. It's not like he was born in this space, like Truman.

One of the most insane survival story I’ve ever seen
When I was watching this TV program at that time, Nasubi suffered from malnutrition and was given intravenous drips many times over the past year and a half. That was so awful. I thought jail would be better because you could eat three times a day at least.

@@lincoqie 昔から北野武のお笑い番組で芸人が寝てるとこを大爆音で起こされたり、裸になって熱湯に入ったり、裸で罰ゲームをやるのが結構普通でした。それを警察が逮捕しないのと近いかもしれない
この番組は芸人が目隠しで拉致されてからどっかに連れて行かれ強制的に過激な企画をすることが売りで、毎回の恒例だった。芸人って身体を張るもので、売れるためならなんでもするんで、なすびも同意してたのかと思って見てたから特に誰も問題視してなかった。当然警察も問題視しない。この番組からはそうやって売れる芸人も現れた。無名だったなすびも知名度と人気を得た。
本人もなんとなくその価値観を受け入れてたので最後まで訴訟をしなかったんでしょう。しかし精神的な傷は現実だった。芸人の”いじり”で実は本当に傷ついてる芸人がいるのと似てますね。
今トップに君臨してる有吉だってこの番組出身だもんね。

As a Japanese I am really suprised this old famous tv show is on the oveseas media now. Back then, JP broadcast media had no morality at all. They wanted to do anything if they could get high viewer rate. Especially newcomer comedians or talents were treated very harsh because TV stations exploited their motivations to want to be famous, and I think this inmorality still extists in some extent.

Im from Quebec, Canada and the movie Louis 19 (1994) was the movie everyone thought The Truman Show stole their idea from. I feel very sorry for this man to have suffered such a horrible experience, much like animals in zoos, circuses, etc, just terrible.
Japan had some odd shows. I'm so happy Nasubi seems to be doing well now. I noticed nothing was mentioned of his relationship status so looks like at 48 years old he's single with no children...wouldn't surprise me if this reality show affected his approach to relationships.

As a Japanese my self, I would say Japanese TV show was like TH-cam. People in Japan who wanted to do something crazy went to the Japanese tv industry.
I can see how that would become the case, what I find sickening is that the government in Japan allow this kind of thing for one, but also that Japanese people accepted it widely as a form of entertainment. I’m so so glad he’s doing better now. I watched Brandon FM’s video on Nasubi and what he went to is truly horrifying. The video of his room collapsing and him seeing all those people still makes me emotional. I don’t even know how you begin to move on from a situation like this, but he did it!
How inhumane, I am surprised the director isn't sitting in jail right now. I guess since the door was unlocked it's not considered kidnapping or force, but psychologically this has to be something of that effect.

I have never seen this show, but it was enough to make me sick.
There are many shows in Japan that bully people to get laughs from the viewers, but I and people around me hate these things and don't watch any of them.

Never heard of this show before. I watch Japanese shows, series, and anime to learn Japanese, so that I can communicate in the future.
This is insane that it was even allowed. No shred of dignity as a human being, this is just crazy.
15 months in isolation? That's insane
The show was about him surviving off only what he won in sweepstake prices. The show runners didn't tell him it was broadcasted everywhere and took literally everything from him before he started. The isolation along with starvation even in a short amount of time made it more difficult for him to make logical choices which is why one of the excuses he said he didn't leave was he was worried he would be arrested for being nude in pubic, expecting the show runners to toss him out with nothing (which from what I've heard probably wasn't far from the truth).
Overtime he actually was getting to the goal faster then the showrunners expected so they literally bullied and manipulated him into believing he would get nothing unless the time was extended so he agreed. After that he had to basically start over which only further messed with his mental state. The show runners even extended this second run futher by saying he had to win the money to get back home, adding more to the goal by changing the price for the plane ride.
After all that, the isolation, the starvation, the manipulation, bullying, and the extra time added he just broke down to the point where he accepted it as his new life because he literally didn't believe he had a choice. The final scene where he's revealed in front of an audience proves that because as soon as he was brought into a new room he stripped down without being told to.
He was mentally and physically broken.
The fact the show runners aren't in jail is beyond my understanding.

@@kujirakun3 落とし穴も、大食いチャレンジも、昔から見てて嫌だなって思ってた。ワイプでそれに対して大爆笑してる芸能人たちの顔が入ってるせいで「ここ笑わなきゃいけないとこなんだ？」とは思ったけど…逆にこれがおもしろいんだと勘違いしちゃった人たちから、同じような目に遭わされたこともあります。火のついた花火投げつけられて服が焦げかけたり。周りは大笑い。こういう虐め系の笑いの様式を広めたTVへの恨みはあります。弱い立場の芸人が体張るのは、売れたいからきつい仕事でも受ける、というポジティブな理由だけじゃなく、業界から自分が消えないように耐えてる部分もありそうだし、美談にしていいのか？と疑問です。断れないって点では強制された枕営業と紙一重。ディレクターに強制されるんじゃなく、自分に挑戦を課すスタイルの「体を張る」であったなら芸として楽しめるかもしれないけど。

I’m Japanese.
This is a program when I was a teenager. To be honest, I wasn’t an enthusiastic watcher of this show, but I thought, “They’ve started a funny project.” I never thought about Nasubi’s human rights.They would also have been accused of being a “Fake” if he had “prize life” only in the parts on TV.
They’re talking like the “over” event that happened almost 30 years ago, but nothing’s over or changed.The underlying values of Japanese society remain the same.People who are socially vulnerable or have no choice are more likely to suffer human rights violations.(And it still doesn’t matter for them. )
There are many situations where people who need welfare or someone’s help cannot live without selling their “human rights.”
Such a people cannot afford court costs, so he or she cannot file a trial for defamation or damages.
In addition, the weakest people in Japanese society are young women who are poor (or disabled).The way “young women” convert their human rights into money is through AV, sex and prostitution.That’s why many women in Japan are engaged in that kind of “industry.”

The producer tortured this man for more than a year. Its crazy that the producer seems proud of what he did to him, and he was never prosecuted.
I hope he sues the living $#!+ out of that production. THEY WERE DEAD WRONG AND EXCUSIVE!

誰も酷いことだとは思っていませんでした。
録画放送以外にインターネット生放送もあったと記憶しています。ちんぽこが映らないように修正マークが動いていました。
Sometimes its so freaking weird and dystopian when some countries find a certain entertainment amusing and funny but other perspectives in different countries it’s obviously humane on so many levels.
