These so-called private plates are actually numbers that have at some time been registered by the DVLA and then given up. When very old cars were scrapped the DVLA retained those cherished numbers in their records. They then sold the right to use them to anyone prepared to pay. They are still part of the DVLA database and are subject to the same conditions as any other plate. If I am incorrect I would be happy to be informed

Now it's different, they have alienated so many members of the public by criminalising every person that they are alone, closing ranks and making life a turf war, us versus them. As a police officer, he should be aware that number plate registration numbers belong to the DVLA and are not private.
Plus, you have to show reasonable cause to obtain keeper details from the DVLA, very frustrating to hear this all the time.

When I first started watching these auditing videos about 18 months ago I honestly thought that the vast majority of officers would behave calmly, rationally and professionally. How wrong I was. This sergeant could not come up with a single lawful reason to stop the filming so went down the inevitable abuse of S43 route and his loyal plods let him get away with it.
