The elephant in the room is the taxation structure. The hot hatch cannot be under 4m today. And the consumer paying more than 15L for a hatch isn't worth it. i20 N Line had to cut 80mm from its global model to fit into Indian taxation structure. On this note the VW Polo failed.
Most hot hatches ended up in the hands of non enthusiastic drivers. Punto, polo tsi,gt , figo, all are better than the normal versions but are often treated as a calm var for a peace drive
I Waited For Altroz For More Than A Year. But Half Hearted Attemp By Tata Has Disappointed Me. A Body Kit like N Line. Disk Break At Rear And Different Set Of Alloys Would Be More Than Enough.
You put zen with 16-17 seconds to 100 and vague handling and left out Altroz with a 11.3 s to 100 and sharp handling?? Also where's JTP man?? It was as good as a baleno rs and was faster than nline i20
I love how Hormazd called out the track comparison by evo India using an auto box for i20 vs a manual Tata altroz. Autocarindia did the same with manual versions of all and i20 ended up being quicker. No wonder they are right at top since they always have ethics.
It really takes guts, and Hormazd is gutsy to say the least. In fact he is one of the oldest and most ethical auto journalists in the market. Especially when compared to the boot licking Motoroctane, which is extremely biased towards Tata 😢
Biggest compromise in practicality in our country especially on the 'imported from the moon' surfaces on unavoidable service roads on the NH48 passing through suburban Pune, is in the ground clearance. So India will only ever if at all have a hot crossover market rather than a low sprung hot hatch market. Even the Polo GT was too low here. Anything less than 180 mm ground clearance and 400mm water wading capacity is a heart in the mouth kind of driving experience on our surfaces especially in the monsoons
i20 N Line owner here, it's luke warm at best. We had a global Fiesta earlier, the hyundai cannot come close in steering response, suspension or chassis rigidity! and that Ford was a family sedan! I quite like the exhaust note though!
Sadly, we don't have Hyundai i20N model available in the UK and Europe. Probably, we Indians stay away from "pocket pinching" cars as we are obsessed with our "Kitna Deti hai" cars 😅 Hot hatches are for those customers who buy cars straight from their heart rather than from their brains. Hence, we deserve only fuel efficient, impotent and tin-can cars 😅
Always lukn forward for ur episodes, such a privilege..Hormazd sir is an encyclopedia n an asset especially to the enthusiasts like me..Sergius a fan of urs too..keep it coming guys, all the support n success to u guys
Kudos to Hyundai for giving us the i20 nline manual, proper hot hatch for India Has a good engine, disc brakes on all 4 corners 6 airbags and stiff suspension P.s owner of nline N6 here vfm car
People are more and more willing to buy niche cars cause we have reached a critical point of saturation which will only get more saturated. Just need to make them value in comparison, Sedan priced polo didn't do well but the fairly priced N6 is doing very well, A 2 door Thar did very well but the similarly priced and smaller 4 door Jimny didn't. Clearly the term value has different and evolving meanings for newer buyers.
Hormazd makes a great point about EVs being hot hatches. I think it makes absolute sense. Yeah the feel of a manual transmission may not be there, but if good performance and trying to tame that performance is what you like, then EVs make the best hot hatches. I hope we can see an Altroz EV soon.
A Saturday morning show + black coffee - perfect start to the weekend! Also, IMHO the Altroz needs the following to become a hot hatch. 1. Better suspension 2. Needs to generate 150bhp (30+ increase) out of a 3/4 cyl with Turbo 3. Remove those horrible stripes and bring some colours in there 4. A CVT or DSG option in there instead of just manual All this with a 2 lakh price increase? It will sell!
Suspension is among the best. Anymore stiffening will affect travel comfort. This is the max Altroz can do with the given MPI engine+ transmission combo. Automatics won't sell.. If u ask me, I'll say Tata should ditch their age old gearbox, put in a modern MT, and plonk one of their GDI engines. Most importantly they need to get out of making cars from an efficiency POV mindset and go all out to make a hot hatch.

I just searching today for know more about hot hatches and thinking why in india missing those hatches like corolla GR , Yaris GR now your podcast notify me ... Thanks to you guys . . ❤
100% agreed. I have a Civic Type R in the US, and it's more enjoyable than other sportscars I've driven, but I simply can't imagine driving a car that stiff and low in India. It's pretty practical, but I guess until our roads (and the speedbreakers) improve, the hot hatch segment doesn't seem to make a strong enough case for itself. SUVs rule back home, and the logical step for manufacturers would be to bring "hot SUVs" instead.
Definition of a hot hatch - a small car of dreams where one does not own the keys ..ever. But speaks abt for it. In no particular order- 1. Chevrolet SRS - only supercharged car sold in India 2. Punto Abarth 3 Polo GTI and GT 4. Ford Figo S 5. Alto 1.1 6. Honda Brio 7. Tata Tiago JTP 8.Palio 1.6
Ford 1.2 dragon is a one gem of engine. Love my freestyle. Vibration Are barely mininum, achieving it without a balancer shaft. Sad to see Ford gone. Everyday I drive my Freestyle puts a smile on face. Makes U feel alive.
The 1.4 GT TSI DSG was good too. I Guess customer complaints killed it. 90 percent of gearbox issues stemmed from mechanics not being able to centre the clutch/es properly, at least on first go. Hell of a gearbox with paddle shift option, and I'm a manual guy. And that handling! Got one still in the family.
I love how people keep criticizing Maruti Suzuki for not bringing in sporty version of either Swift or other models when they have already tried and they've realized it simply does not sell. Didn't Maruti try Baleno RS? It was a monumental flop despite the car being an excellent sporty car. Maruti is a mass market car and in this market you mostly have families where the husband travels to work everyday and needs a car with not good, but excellent mileage and the wife and kids need a car with comfortable suspensions, so who exactly is going to buy these sporty cars? Mostly young unmarried men. While over approx 50% of our population is less than age of 30, how many of these guys can afford cars considering they may not be earning that much? A very small percentage of it. Hence sporty cars don't sell even though they have a passionate following. People who can afford cars are married and working and they need comfortable cars with great mileage, hence sporty cars don't sell as much. Kudos to the i20 though to continue coming up with N line but the conclusion is that for a regular mass market car manufacturer making a sporty version is just not worth the effort.
What Hormazd said will turn out to be very prescient. Going ahead, all hot hatches will be EV, since govt will keep on neutering high performance ICEs. From that perspective the true blue hottest hatch in India today is undoubtedly the Ioniq 5, when budget isn't a problem. If a micro SUV can be considered as tall boy hatch, then the peoples choice would the Punch EV.
My plan (really a daydream) forward is to wait for the new Skoda sub-4m SUV, and get it in 1.0L TSI. Code 6 has already unlocked the ECU of that engine. A downpipe, exhaust, radiator, turbo and air filter plus other performance mods worth 2-3L should juice this engine atleast by 60-70%. Don't forget this is the same engine that did duty in the VW Up GTI. This is capable of 250 solid horses.
BRO a word of caution if you want to code your upcoming TSI verify before purchase VW has introduces a new coding safety patch in 2024 cars which can't be coded now easily
Sir, you forgot to mention the Getz crdi. That 1.5L diesel engine from Verna produced 110ps and 250nm and was light years ahead in our industry. It couldn’t handle but was great in straight lines. One of the best car that gives you push to the seat feeling.
the Tata Altroz Racer (MZ1) 1.2 Biturbo I3 5-Dr Hatchback (RHD) could seriously do with a 1.4 Biturbo I4, mated to a 8-speed torque converter auto . . . max power rated at 158 bhp & 128 Nm of torque . . . a AWD variant of Altroz Racer will ensure that much anticipated hot hatch performance . . .
Speaking of hot hatches, I was on the lookout for upgrading my vehicle in 2023. I wanted a compact car, so my preference was a hatchback that had decent power for the occasional adrenaline rush. I realized that I didn't have many options, and I decided to finalize on Fronx with a boosterjet engine. It's been 7 months and 10k kms, I must say it seems to be the right decision. The higher ground clearance has helped me tremendously (i20 N line was dropped due to the ground clearance mainly). The overall package seems good. P.S: I don't know if it fits in the hot hatch segment, but let's be honest here. It's a good looking hatcback with a decent engine, so I felt the urge to post it here 😊
I feel India is still not ready for an huge volume hot hatch , all the OEMs are palying the number games with SUVs and bread and butter cars . I'm so glad someone brought up the SRV. It was pricey, large, and uneconomical at the time (with a terrible manual gearbox), but it had the looks and engine like no other hatch in its class. In a way, it pioneered the B-segment hatchback market (along with the OG Honda Jazz) before the i20 made it mainstream.
Love your Podcast & content. Keep it up. The Ford Figo diesel was hotter than all the hot hatches in the Indian market today
Exactly
Absolutely. Remember the figo S?
Yeah but didn't sell enough though
As a proud owner of Figo S tdci, i wholeheartedly agree with you...☺️🥰
1.5Gt TDI polo
I hope autocar continues this podcast, it gives better context then cursted videos for general viewers.

Let's be honest, there was only 1 Hot Hatchback really that ticked all the boxes. The Abarth.
True..VW fanboys make a lot of noise on social media..but Abarth was better than them all
What about polo TSI 1.2 ?
Bro tiago JTP i liked that
Most hot hatches ended up in the hands of non enthusiastic drivers. Punto, polo tsi,gt , figo, all are better than the normal versions but are often treated as a calm var for a peace drive
The way hormaz’s face went down when EVs were being talked, end of an era.
Citroen C3 Turbo having the best engine in this segment
You are spot on. I had my apprehensions. My colleague purchased one.... That engine is very responsive
Yes but its still not included. Rip c3.
I Waited For Altroz For More Than A Year. But Half Hearted Attemp By Tata Has Disappointed Me. A Body Kit like N Line. Disk Break At Rear And Different Set Of Alloys Would Be More Than Enough.
Stupid stripes
Buy the i20 now then🤷♂️
U were the only 1 person waiting for trash altroz
They don't sell enough to justify the cost of investment. Everyone prefers mid sized SUVs now
I remember one of the comments in a leading auto magazine about the Zen " It is a Maruti 800 on steroids, and goes like one too."
1) Polo Gti
2) Punto Abarth
3) i20 Nline
4) Figo S
5) Baleno RS
6) Zen (OG)
7) Palio 1.6
Altroz ❌❌❌
Tiago JTP was much better packed & priced than these...
Zen hits hard😌✋🏼
Lmao, include JTP twins dude!
Absolutely !!! Altroz Racer is only a Style Statement !!!
You put zen with 16-17 seconds to 100 and vague handling and left out Altroz with a 11.3 s to 100 and sharp handling?? Also where's JTP man?? It was as good as a baleno rs and was faster than nline i20

I came here only for this comment.
i20 has a DCT. It's the quickset shifting gb, faster than an MT. Thats why Hyundai put a DCT in Nline versions. Problem is that its slow to launch.

I had a Skoda Fabia 1.6L but it gave lot of probllems. When it ran, it was a pleasure to drive beautiful.

Honda Brio being a mass market small car was perfect with the power to weight ratio and quick pickups
Polo is an absolute lenged. Im so sad that india doesnt get the polo anymore. I am a glad owner of a vw 2010 model polo. Still running strong. Polo❤
Always lukn forward for ur episodes, such a privilege..Hormazd sir is an encyclopedia n an asset especially to the enthusiasts like me..Sergius a fan of urs too..keep it coming guys, all the support n success to u guys
Kudos to Hyundai for giving us the i20 nline manual, proper hot hatch for India

The getz diesel, was bloody powerful. Handling also was decent. Practical as it was very spacious.

I got the N8 for a huge discount and it’s even more value for money now since my discount was 80k on ex showroom prices 🎉🎉

My fav hot hatches
Punto Abarth
Palio 1.6
Polo 1.0 TSI
Figo 1.5
i20 N Line
Baleno RS
owning a 1.0TSI Manual Polo! So much fun!
Has compact SUV vehicles segment taken away market of hot hatch ? Really miss a good performance hatch today.
Ford freestyle diesel , hot hatch and very well priced.

My dad gifted me the Figo diesel Titanium when I was in college. It was absolutely brilliant to drive.
palio s10, abarth punto, polo GTI and hyundai kona EV. These are the hot hatches.
TATA should have waited for its GDI engine, and used it in ALTROZ RACER ...I was also thinking on same lines
What about the ford fusion 1.6 petrol. That was a great hot hatch in its time
The zen was the OG Indian hot hatch
honda jazz diesel , is a good car with strong perfomance. and pretty practical too.
Sir, you forgot to mention the Getz crdi. That 1.5L diesel engine from Verna produced 110ps and 250nm and was light years ahead in our industry. It couldn’t handle but was great in straight lines. One of the best car that gives you push to the seat feeling.
we thought of the Getz but the engine wasn't great. had lots of turbo lag and a narrow power band. Fast but not fun enough
There are only 3 HOT hatches in India: 1) Figo Diesel 2) Polo GTi 3) i20 Petrol
All 3 having under 10 seconds of 0-100
I think you mean i20 N line. There's no way the i20 NA engine does 0-100 in less than 10 seconds
Nice discussion guys. Enjoyed it. You missed the JTP twins though.
Why no JTP on this list ?
Choosen the topic for podcast is really hot 🔥
Pocket rocket is not hot hatch?
Ford figo 1.5 diesel
Citroen c3 1.2 turbo

I drive Altroz diesel. It is amazing at highways 🛣️
Nothing comes near Abarth. Unfortunately india is not the right market for high power sub 4 metre cars
Vw polo 1.6 lit was good too
Great Podcast!
Ford Figo 1.4 diesel was the best car I ever drove.
form hot hatchbacks to hot suv and future hot coupe in budget range
Fiat Palio 1.6 GTX was all the rage when I was a kid.
I feel India is still not ready for an huge volume hot hatch , all the OEMs are palying the number games with SUVs and bread and butter cars .
The only reason for India to have a hot hatch is to be a halo car , where OEMs consider it as a marketign exercise and its losses add up in marketing budget.
Hyundai getz CRDI in 2010 with Verna engine was hot hatch those days
The 3 cylinder 300hp monster GR COROLLA from Toyota needs to be in India.
Polo ❤
Polo GT TSI, really amazing hot hatch, why did VW stopped producing and selling in India?
The 4 m rule meant that it was not feasible to sell it in india
With swift losing its fun to drive character lately, there's an avenue opened for Suzuki to bring their swift sport to India and decimate i20 n line and altroz racer provided they price it competitively
Chevrolet Optra SRV, kind of surprised you guys missed it.
There was one from Chevrolet SRV optra
Among the sea of "designated" hot hatches, there was a car called Hyundai Getz "diesel"............110PS/235Nm.....and boy it could move.......at least in straight line.......
Chevrolet Optra SRV is way forgotten for being the hottest of its time...
Accent viva crdi?
14:18 I wish everyone calls it a DCT and not DSG. All gearboxes must be named upon it's technology, not by it's marketing name given by the brands.
If Altroz Racer is classified as a hot hatch, then I'd love to classify Ignis too !
Palio 1.6
Figo diesel
Fabia 1.6
Getz diesel
Chevrolet SRV
Abarth Punto
Love your Podcast & content. Keep it up. But hate to see that pick/red backdrop which looks Desi 😜😝😂🤣
Hot-hatch will fail because it does not look different hence does offer elevated personal Status for the higher priced engine you pay. In short, it looks the same except for the engine under the hood.
Nothing quite like polo!
Now we all know it’s a lie
When Tata said Altroz is the fastest hatchback in india 😂🤣
Volkswagen Polo GTI and 1.0 TSI were awesome and previously the Fiat Palio as well. Volkswagen still can bring the new Polo but they avoid it. Strange is If i20 N line can cell then why not Polo. 🤘🏻👌🏼💯🚗
1.5 TDCI ❤
Hot hatches and SUV coupe, are both simmilar
But what would you buy in terms of performance if your budget is 10-12L?
Can't forget the getz crdi
A 150 hp petrol hybrid hothatch with good exhaust note and tata steel quality and kia technology would under 10 lakhs will be the best seller
hyundai inoq N IS BEST EV hot hatch
👌👌
no mention of getz diesel.....
Polo GT 1.0❤
Zen ❤
Apart from the Abarth Punto & VW POLO GTI, others are damp squibs
I’m sorry, but none of these are hot hatches. I don’t think majority of Indian customers would buy a hot hatch. The mentality is simple, more money -> bigger bulkier vehicles.
I would love it if someone puts a 1.5 or 1.6 or even a 2 L engine on a hatch and make it sporty, but with enough ground clearance for our potholes and kacha roads.
You forgot to mention Tata Altroz diesel is currently hot hatch it is better than petrol.
The problem with hot cars is that they have to be taken down to the service centre every 15 days for cooling..😅
Forgot a diesel on Getz which was over powered
