I grew up in Southfield, and was born in the hospital across the street from Northland. That mall was a part of so many of my fondest childhood memories. It’s so sad to see it in ruins.
I also remember the movie theater - I saw “Raiders of the Lost Ark” there as a kid. The movie ran there for six months or more!

@@joramado4804 My parents and I moved here to Southfield, from the Cleveland suburbs, back in '64. I was Very Young. The Freeways allowed folks to flee Detroit for the Suburbs. This town was Never as Fancy as Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, or The Gross Pointes, but it was OK.
By the Seventies, that Mall, and Inner Ring cities like Southfield, were no longer as coveted. Northland Hudson's befell the same fate as Hudson's in Downtown Detroit (which was shuttered back in '83, and imploded Years later.)

I worked here 7 years ago doing maintenance work. In a two week period I saw two shootings, had a gun pulled on me and was almost robbed in the food court.

    Ah, Northland mall..
    I am 14, I first went when i was (i think maybe 4-5 or 6 i forgot..)
Man, So many memories. I used to live in Detroit, And every other week or so we would come to this mall, i LOVED this mall, Biggest mall (besides somerset)
I moved to Southfield around 2018, And when i saw that mall, I was very saddend on how it looked..
1 Year later and it looks like the mall has been demolished more.
There now sits a bunch of hills of mulch, concrete hills.
This mall is always a memory for me.

I will always miss that Chinese restaurant across from Penny's. Sesame chicken was the bomb -- only reason I really ever went to Northland. Also, this mall was where I first saw a CVS store however, it didn't have a pharmacy

I can remember when Northland was an outdoor mall... Bill Bonds! a legend of a Detroit news anchor..
The "Boy on the Bear" statue is now in the Southfield library
Also, the basement had a bus station for DSR (Detroit Street Rail before SEMTA) which directed transportation from Southfield to different parts of Detroit. It also had a fall-out bomb shelter since this was during the "cold war" which was used as the first headquarters for the Oakland County Child Killer task force.

I loved “Boy on the Bear,” I’m so glad it’s been saved. I grew up in Southfield, and I loved the mall and our city library ❤️ Also, I never knew that about the Oakland Co Child Killer - I remember the summer all of that happened. We were told to look out for a guy in a blue AMC Pacer or a Gremlin.

I think that kiosk was a check cashing spot. I forgot about that until you said "bank teller", I cashed a check there once. Wow!!!!! Back in summer of 2000. Jeepers had a roller coaster for little kids. There were fashion shows, all kinds of stuff.

I live near multiple dead malls but there is one mall near me that is still thriving, it was built in the 90s and it's a massive mall

About half of all malls will close and it’s not just the internet causing it. Partly it’s the pandemic. And let’s not forget, malls were majorly overbuilt and there were some bad deals with lots of tax breaks for developers who would cut and run. Malls had very high rents snd as a result, high prices. The original idea was to give an indoor market in cold weather for people to be comfortable. They were neat in their heyday but not an idea built to last. Amazon is the Sears of our era, only instead of a catalog it’s a web site.

Spent a lot of quality time there during the 60’s. Does anyone remember the Mump? It was a club for teenagers. It was separate from the main mall, being built in the parking lot. Good times.

There were relatively modern High-Rise apartments in that area of town that were demolished, years ago. An office Suite, which held the Kaplan Test Prep Center, north of Eight Mile road, is also Gone.

I wish I wasn’t so sentimental. I’m sitting here at work thinking about how much I miss my granny and things we used to do. I started thinking about me and my grandmothers trips to north land mall when I was young adult, I would drive my granny to the mall, she mainly shopped at Hudson’s; later became Macys. After shopping we we ate and the Deli downstairs near the valet entrance As a teen, I worked at Northlands food court: McDonald’s and subway I was still in high school at the time. My grandmother bought her Lancôme and pantyhose at
Hudson’s /Macy’s Northland My last job at Northland was at
Ms Sibleys in the stock room, I sort of hated that job lol My mom would take me and my siblings to Hudson’s in the lower level to see Santa Clause, it was so majestic. I loved the TJ Max there and the Target 🎯 store. I purchased mostly all my 😊Christmas gifts as a teenager at that Target . I will wait for the Hamilton or Dexter bus or whichever came first bag full of Christmas gifts from target big old target bags, I remember being afraid somebody gonna try to rob me on the way home. 😅Almost forgot me my mother and sister met Kriss Kross at Northland Mall my mom grabbed my sister, walked right up to them and introduced my sister. lol They were cool.

They haven't begun work yet on the several hundred million dollar Northland City Center because ...the area is totally blight now.
In the 60's the Brothers Delicatessen had waiting lines always on the weekends. It was THE restaurant of the entire mall.
