Except Myrtle Beach, and it's even going down hill.

I was born and raised in Queens New York, still live in Queens. I am also a City employee. No, the pavilion has not been taken over by cats. It's part of the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. It's also protected under the NYC Landmarks Preservation Society. Which means it cannot be demolished or altered. It can only be maintained as is. It is not abandoned or forgotten.

You just google places, and assume nobody goes there.
Your number one place "New York World's Fair" actually has a lot of visitors. I went there about a year ago. So, how is it abandoned?

I thought it was meant as a joke... I mean, not a hilarious one but still. I enjoyed the video anyway because it's narrated by a human with at least some animation in his voice. There's a channel around here someplace that does true crime and is narrated by a human, but they might as well have used a robot. I dunno if he thinks he's sounding sinister but he just sounds like a disaffected California teenager doing a video for a class project. So yeah, after that, this guy is practically Morgan Freeman.

I marched through the 1964 World's Fair ground in my high school marching band (from Milwaukee) for Wisconsin Day. Thousands of fair goers and virtually every one, young and old were well dressed. Long pants, shirts and ties, dresses, sport coats etc. No kids running around out of control. A lot of the adult males wearing hat's (not caps).
On our free time the band members wore dress pants and dresses (our decision). It was the place to be.
I was lucky enough to get to ride in a turbine car at the General Motors "test track".
No plane transportation used for such trips back then, we took the bus there and back.
Everyone thought we were the University of Wisconsin band because we had a large red/white W on our uniforms (Wauwatosa, city adjacent to Milwaukee) and we were large and good.
Marched in three New York City Macy's Parades, at least two Rose Parades, and several Disney World Electric Light Parades.

I totally agree with you on the decline of dress/attire standards. But do those of us who feel this way still model good behavior? Do we still "dress up" when out in public? I know I do -- and I frequently get comments about being "the best dressed person in the room." It really doesn't take much work or effort -- just thoughtfulness.

I live in Queens, and you are DEAD WRONG about the World's Fair sites at Flushing Park. People here love the park, and thousands hang out and stroll around the Unisphere and the New York Pavilions. Yes, the pavilions are unused, but their uniqueness give the park its signature look. Immigrant families and their kids play volleyball, have picnics, and generally relax after a hard week's labor. Your attitude appears to be that only if a site is HOT AND HAPPENIN' (and presumably CHARGING ADMISSION), it virtually has no value. A pretty boogie point of view!

We were waiting for the buses to pull up to take us home and my grandmother asked what time it was and she happened to look over at the Eastern Airlines pavilion and she saw their logo thinking it was a clock and said its 5 of 9. My grandparents went to the 1964 world fair at the time when everything was up. They still have the maps and attractions centers in the attic somewhere.
My dad and a highschool friend of his went inside the pavillion back in the 1980's. Though it was illegal. They were not able to go inside of the towers as he said that they were locked up with gates, but they were all just roaming around inside the ruins that was once the state's attraction about 20 plus years ago.

Connecticut, my home state is easily the most forgettable, you know why? Because despite being located betwixt the famous cities of New York, Providence and Boston, and being the birthplace of the revolver, nobody outside New England knows that we even exist until somebody tells them and even the rest of new England does pretty much everything they can to ignore us, visiting only on business or to see relatives that happen to live here. Not even the Newton tragedy was enough to permanently put us on the map, (if for all the wrong reasons which are arguably better than none) the rest of the world forgot about us in less than 6 months.

New Mexico - the New Mexico Magazine has a feature call 'One of Our 50 is Missing' this column has stories of folks in other states not knowing that New Mexico is a state. Such as forwarding mail with international postage, being sat with the foreign groups at a conference, moving companies refusing to quote for international delivery, some very funny stories about a forgotten state. Sad about the geography (of the USA) education in our schools.

I just thought that you might like to know, I attended the 1964 World's Fair. I rode there with my parents and younger brother from North Carolina on the train. I am afraid that I don't remember much of the fair, as I was quite young. I do remember that it was a completely different world than today! A world that I wish that I could return to, given the strife that has gone on in half century + since. To me, it was a much better place and time.

fun fact about one of the abandoned turnpike tunnels:
the laurel hill tunnel, is used by chip ganassi racing as a rolling wind tunnel to develop race car aero. it was a pretty secretive place in the racing world where only insiders knew about it, till some hiker noticed empty race gas cans and used slick tires piling up after the abandoned tunnel became enclosed with garages at each end. he posted pics and a video clip of the sound of a screaming v8 coming from the closed off tunnel. then racing journalists did some digging and found out the tunnel was purchases or leased or rented to chip ganassi racing. its the only place of its kind a wind tunnel where they drive 100+ mph in.

I attended the 1964 World's Fair as a member of my high school band marching as the honor band for Wisconsin Day. The 2yr fair run was highly successful, a popular vacation destination.
And get this, everyone attending the fair, including our band on our free time sightseeing day there, dressed up, dresses, sport coats and ties etc. You saw no shorts, blue jeans, tennis type shoes, or casual wear on anyone. Amazing! Those were the days.

So being from clairton I can give some insight into Lincoln way. So for starters nobody is quite positive of what happened for sure however there appear to be a few factors that caused that street to go so unnoticed and abandoned. The first is that the street is tucked away and hidden very well on the outskirts of town so most people never knew it existed which seems to be a good reason why it was never repopulated. The second reason is that all of its residents were elderly and without much family so when they passed away their belongings went unclaimed and their houses were never resold. Another believe for why this street was so abandoned was faulty shifting ground from coal mines beneath it. Also I had heard rumor that there was a bad gas leak that happened there at one point which might have driven residents out. Finally I heard rumor that the state had purchased the land for highway 43 to run through it, however I have never seen any evidence that backs that one up.

    • @chuckbeattyo
      @chuckbeattyo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm the meter reader, who walks LIncoln Way. The "gas leak" rumor I hear from time to time, also, but the biggest reason is just the overall population decline, leading to surplus of homes with no population to occupy them.

Lincoln Way I drove by a month ago, it's been bulldozed. I will take a photo and add a link to it now.
Clairton has several streets, and some houses with spectacular overviews of the Monogohelia River (the "Mon" links up to the Allegheny River to form the Ohio River at the "point" in downtown Pittsburgh). I long wished to have the "best" home, and their back yard is just spectacular overview high up, over the Mon river. Clairton will always have its beauty. All the Mon and Allegheny river cities in population declined western PA are beautiful, I've walked a lot of them for my job.

Another interesting little tidbit regarding Año Nuevo Island, it is actually Año Nuevo State Park. It is home to a very large population of Elephant Sea Lions and because of the sea lion population, it is not uncommon to see Great White Sharks cruising through the waves along the shore.
Sometime during the early to mid-nineties, when I was a kid, I was fortunate enough to have visited the island for a guided tour. It's a very beautiful place where you can view Elephant Sea Lion up close in their natural habitat. Though it was against the rules ("Leave the park as it was before you got here . . ."), I managed to sneak the fur that the sea lions previously shed to take home as souvenirs (it's very rough, like a scrubbing brush or a brillo pad, but also quite fragile, as it comes apart easily).
Unfortunately, according to Wikipedia, the island is currently closed to the public. I hope that sometime in the near future, it will be open once again for others to enjoy.
    Anyway, keep the videos coming!

That road running down the middle of it is Route 66 and when I-40 opened, bypassing the town, the town died. I spent over an hour there wandering around and taking pictures. During that time I saw FOUR vehicles on what used to be a major highway. My car, a car waiting for a school bus, the school bus, and some poor guy looking for a gas station.
