Alan Rickman was hand picked to play Snape by J.K. Rowling, and received special instructions from her about character. Rowling even provided him with vital details of Snape's backstory, not revealed until the final novel.
Makes sense. Snape's role in the story is possibly the most important. Hear me out. If Snape doesn't partially overhear the prophecy and report it to Voldemort, Voldemort doesn't go after Harry for 17 years. If Snape doesn't harbour a love for Lily, Voldemort doesn't give her the option to spare herself (Voldemort only gave her the option to stand aside as a favour to Snape), he just discards of her like he did with James (hence why James's death didn't give Lily sacrificial protection) and therefore, Harry doesn't have the sacrificial protection from Lily. Snape is the X-Factor of the series. Without him, the whole story doesn't start and without him, the whole story doesn't end.
