The amount of tabs I have open on my browser after watching this boggles the mind. If I ever were to have access to a time machine, this is PRECISELY where I would go! My gracious, this was interesting!
Thank you so much for your enthusiasm, Dr. This is a wonderful, informative lecture. Teachers (professors) always give their students room to grow, be proud and exert their knowledge. It shows that the lecturer isn't just all about him- or herself. Great style of delivery. Viewers, please note and know that an audience of attendees can also be considered students. Actually, I think many or some of the audience members are the professor's present or past students. Dr. Riley, thanks for sharing Zelda's story and how she influenced "Mr. Zelda's" writing. And we do appreciate how he tried to care for his wife as she suffered through her illness. She was indeed an innovative creative. Again, thank you for showing us this.
This is a veryv informative and amusingly "scattered" lecture. I agree with the Lecturer, Zelda"s Private One-on-One Therapy notes being publically exposed is a blatant Mental Health "Violation of Privacy" as well as a "Conflict of Inteest" on the part of the so called "Professional Health Field". This violation has also happened to others (not sure if one example is Sylvia Plath).. Best wishes to all other "fellow attendees" of this UTube lecture. Catch you at the next fascinating "Zeldafest"! ❤️❤️❤️
- so glad to find ur lecture at Strand - just one correction - Peter Martins who became Director of NYC Ballet never married Kelsey Kirkland who wrote Dancing On My Grave - Martins married another NYC Ballet dancer called Darcy Kistler - ur lecture was great fun -
I'd like to say how much I appreciate this video! Save the the waltz is one of my favourites, and I believe it is still underestimated. Zelda is an iconic image of Jazz Age, but unfortunately there's not enough information about her. This lecture is both very informative, deep and entertaining at the same time. I wish I had such teachers back in my college day. Thank you so much! Greetings from Ukraine :)
I just came across this part of history. I am amazed at how Professor Charles Riley II. is presenting the talk. I really really like his way and found with his lightness and funny ways it very easy to step into that time and to learn more about it.
Tallulah Bankhead was not from Montgomery. The Sayre and Bankhead families were acquainted, but Tallulah grew up in Jasper, about 125 miles from Montgomery.
This is how I tell a story when I've had two bottles of wine and an Adderall. I wish he'd stop going off on tangents and asking the woman in the front row to fill in the gaps every few moments. I enjoy his enthusiasm, but stay on track, man. This lecture could have been delivered in 40 minutes with the same amount of information and less manic padding.
I love Paris in the 1920's... My favorite writers and artist all came from the Lost Generation. If i actually believed in reincarnation i would have to say that i had to have been alive durning that era.
This is probably less exhausting if you already know everything he's going to say, because you wouldn't have to even make mental notes. But I came by to learn what I didn't already know, as I tend to do, when I shut up and just listen... Unfortunately, I'm not, as he puts it, "a ringer" in the audience, and I'm leaving now, because I'm too far behind whatever manic curve I'd have to ride to even hope to catch up to what I could have learned from this very passionate and probably interesting lecture.
The biggest tragedy is that when zelda cheated on Scott, society forced them to stay together. Back then divorce wasn't the quick fix we have today. But with them i think they needed to separate. You can't stay with someone if you refuse to forgive them
Well, I am about 15 minutes into this and I am wondering whether Dr. Riley is actually a doctor of philosophy or of comedy. I will try to "tough" it out.
This was the wrong choice of lecturer. He knows his stuff but goes off on too many tangents, likes talking about himself too much & is almost David Brent'esque in his delivery
If you enjoy mildly amusing jazz age anecdotes delivered by an insufferable prattling twit and laced with giggling self referential allusions to blue blood relatives and ivy league pedigrees, this video is for you!
I can't believe the nintendo game Legend of Zelda was named after The Real Zelda before Robin named his Daughter Zelda Williams from the Zelda Games since they loved the game series.
classical/Hellenic beauty was inspired by platonic proportions. HELLENISTIC BEAUTY WAS ROMANTIC AND NATURAL IN NATURE. MODERNISM'S BEAUTY WAS ROMANTIC AND SOCIALLY CRITICAL. TRY TO CAPTURE THE PATHOS IN THE GAME BETWEEN PEOPLE, NOT SOME ABSTRACT IDEAL OF IT'S PERFECTION.
F. S. F. ripped of so much of her stuff, and used so many of her sayings and ideas. But I guess it was a perfect storm.🤷♀️ I do like the presenters’ enthusiasm, even though it is a bit...
He is so clearly a feminist, and he’s being light hearted about his critiques of multiple characters, obviously embellishing their more eccentric characteristics for dramatic effect

Save Me the Waltz has all of Zelda's craziness, none of Scott's talent
I just came across this part of history. I am amazed at how Professor Charles Riley II. is presenting the talk. I really really like his way and found with his lightness and funny ways it very easy to step into that time and to learn more about it.
I love the gentleman being so excited about our history! Thank you so much!
I love this so and yes he is exciting to listen to about a wonderful subject!
Lecturing with so much passion - I love it. Thank you for sharing this.
Passion is no substitute for judgment
This is incredible.I especially love how he refers to Scott as "Mr. Zelda". I also appreciate the deeper look into her paintings.
The proper way would be Mr. Sayre.
Fun fact: Princess Zelda from The Legend of Zelda is named after Zelda Fitzgerald.
So is Robin Williams daughter.
Love this mans passion.
Pure joy to watch and listen to! Thank You!!!!

I love Professor Riley. Such fun to listen to him.
I love Zelda! I think this lecture gets the viewers excited to learn on their after this! Mission accomplished I'd say! Thanks so much!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️
... 'to learn on their after this'?
You sound like you would play The Legend of Zelda even though the series was named after her for a fact.
Outstanding! Funny and insightful! Thank you!
I like that he's really passionate about what he's teaching, and a little eccentricity isn't awful. lol
Yes I’m here for it 👏🏻
@@skarlitbegoniahz and I’m here with a headache 😔

Christina Ricci did a wonderful job portraying her in Z The Beginning of Everything
My heart rate actually went up while watching this at certain points.

I’m surprised Picasso thought Zelda talked too fast being that she was from Alabama.
thank you so much for sharing this, I really enjoyed this lecture!!!
Lovely to hear about Zelda Fitzgerald thank you
The video should have zoomed in
The biggest tragedy is that when zelda cheated on Scott, society forced them to stay together. Back then divorce wasn't the quick fix we have today. But with them i think they needed to separate. You can't stay with someone if you refuse to forgive them
I don't know. Most people in their set were divorced. Hemingway, Dorothy Parker, Sherwood Anderson, etc.
But he truly didn't want to. He felt very obligated to her, esp. after the illness set in.
Well, I am about 15 minutes into this and I am wondering whether Dr. Riley is actually a doctor of philosophy or of comedy. I will try to "tough" it out.
In my opinion the most appropriate description of Zelda Fitzgerald is the word "sybarite". You have her in a nutshell.
BEAUTY IS AN AFFIRMATION OF A DIMENSION OF THE GOOD. IT CAN ALSO BE A FACADE HIDING EVIL, OR IGNORING DECAY
In that case it’s an imposter.
Love the passion, but the jumpiness and constant digressions drives me crazy!
Tender is the Night is beautifully written. Language dude. Plots are a dime a dozen.
I loved Tender is the Night. My favourite F Scott book..I loved the lecture though.
This guy as is insane as Zelda.
I love the way he calls Scott "Mr. Zelda".
Fun lecture style.
Would Scott have been famous without Zelda?
Or if Zelda had been a hag? Winning the beautiful elusive woman was key for him personally and for his public image.
Did Stravinsky conduct the
orchestra for the Ballet Rousse?
This was the wrong choice of lecturer. He knows his stuff but goes off on too many tangents, likes talking about himself too much & is almost David Brent'esque in his delivery
the sexism in psychiatry at the time doomed this talented lady .
I have a pencil drawing its 4/86 with his sygnature but o cant find it any wher

My opinion is that your perception of this 'twit' could not be more accurate.
Thank you!!!
did I tell you about my tie?
Speed is one helleva drug!
Dear lord. Somebody give this man some downers.
Exactly my thoughts. 🤣
Haven't watched it yet and already waiting for a wide eyed ADD fellow.
I like his passion,I’m so tired of staid and stiff people.
He's equal parts annoying and endearing.
This guy is all over the place and I love it.
Says a lot about YOU
GREAT VIDEO ! THURSDAY 12/28/23 DECEMBER 28, 2023
NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY
I can't believe the nintendo game Legend of Zelda was named after The Real Zelda before Robin named his Daughter Zelda Williams from the Zelda Games since they loved the game series.
Zelda was clinically insane, and ‘Save me the Waltz’ is utterly unreadable
I agree that her book is unreadable. But she might have feigned mental illness to get away from Scott.
He lost me when he showed 2 pictures that weren't even her.
Scott should have perhaps dumped Zelda after his first book was published. Talk about blind love!

they put me the women from the b-52's to mind when they were young wild and beautiful
BEAUTY IS QUALITY OR BEAUTY IS A LIE
TO SOME THE AFTER LIFE IS A IE, ANS SO TOO REINCARNATION. OTHERS NEED IT TO HAVE EXISTENTIAL HOPE.
F. S. F. ripped of so much of her stuff, and used so many of her sayings and ideas. But I guess it was a perfect storm.🤷♀️ I do like the presenters’ enthusiasm, even though it is a bit...
“Great artists steal.”
But flappers is such a better word.
Scott plagiarized his wife
La femme fatale
Love it except the obnoxious over referral to Mr. Zelda....
Am I they only one annoyed by this New York born and raised man overusing British pronunciations, idioms and phrases? So pretentious.
The remarks about Stein and how butch she was are pretty insulting and sexist.
Michelle Fischer oh for crying out loud
He is so clearly a feminist, and he’s being light hearted about his critiques of multiple characters, obviously embellishing their more eccentric characteristics for dramatic effect
There is nothing sexist about his opinions IMO
Gertrude Stein was a sexist. From a man's point of view.
Stein WAS butch!
I must say. Rough. A lotta me, a lotta perpenicular pronoun.
Just started watching this. Dr. Riley must belong to the same tie-knotting school as President Trump!
