Love this movie, LOVE Ewan McGregor’s voice so much on this song and in all of them in the musical. Such a clear tenor sound. Usually I don’t like “straight” tone singing they tend to do with famous actors in movie musicals (cough cough Emma Watson in BATB) and here I love it for some reason?! Even Nicole Kidman… she had more of a “thin” voice and it works here.
I think it’s a really well written song that hits big especially watching the whole movie.

I know this is a year ago, but if you haven’t seen it yet, please watch it. Your wife loves this song for all the right reasons. Watching the movie will provide new emotions into the song. Every time I hear it, I get super emotional and I hang onto every word

Moulin Rouge!! Great movie, own it, watched it at least a dozen times, Elton John covers, Queen covers -awesome!! Ok, this particular song is the cheesy one, works better with the visuals but the rest of the movie music rocks. Other fav's: Oliver, The Producers (the newer one), and how about a rock musical that is more on the rock side; Jesus Christ Superstar (the version with Ian Gillan from Deep Purple is the preferred one). And yes, Natasha should definitely return! Recommend for Natasha...In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel (similar theme as this Moulin rouge spin).

I've never seen the musical. I suppose for Natasha, since she's seen the musical, and understands the song in context, provides a sentimental value to her. Just based on the song, I most likely would never listen to it, however if I did watch the musical and liked it, maybe my opinion may change. I think of musicals like West Side Story or The Sound of Music, where some of the songs would be cheesy but I love it because, I loved the show and understand the song in context.

@@JustJP The movie was based on cover songs, you're right thought, "Come What May" for me was cheese.
JustJP “Somewhere,” “Maria” and “Tonight” from West Side Story are stellar and all stand well on their own. I love the movie version best. Marnie Nixon was the vocalist even though Natalie Wood played the part of Maria. It’s romantic but not cheesy, because Leonard Bernstein was a genius composer with a classical and jazz background and Stephen Sondheim (whom you know) wrote the perfect lyrics.

I like the idea of Natasha bringing her songs into the mix. As for this song, I agree with you JP. It's good for what it is but it's not my cup of tea and I'm generally not a fan of musicals. Fun review and it highlights how some songs are more of an emotional connection for people than a musical one. It's clear that the appeal for Natasha is the romanticism of it.

I'm also an instrument-focused person. So I like progressive rock and smooth-jazz. When I first heard "Come What May", in 2003, it seemed bland. I think it's a song that takes time (for some people). I listened again (because I had the song on mp3, or I would've moved on).
By the 3rd listen, the song traveled deep into my soul. I don't focus on the melodrama; I just absorb that high feeling(which I also get from music from Rush, and instrumental Craig Chaquico). The pure voices, heavenly harmonies, and little noticed ... the music creates a perfect setting for the vocals. The drums stick out in a good way (I'm a drummer so maybe that's especially good for me.)

After reading some of the comments, I was inspired enough to watch the movie. I was surprised by amount of songs I knew. Ironically, a few songs from Sound of Music was in the score. Overall, I enjoyed the musical aspect of the movie, however the story line was unoriginal. A 3.5 for me overall. One of my favorite musicals is West Side Story, just love the songs in that play. If you have the time, watch the movie came out in 1961.
Thats awesome Dukes; glad you tried the movie. I've definitely see WSS a looong time ago, but I cant say I remember any of it. I do enjoy Grease though..

You have to see it. The director frequently directs Met productions. It was a visual smorgasbord. The music was cut together from SEVERAL popular songs. It was brilliantly done. Don’t judge until you see it. That’s all. I actually did ding this with a tenor I went to University with for one of our classmates. It was perfection, if I may say so, myself.
Bjork did a really depressing musical but the music in it is amazing. I’d recommend the song I’ve seen it all but the version featuring Thome Yorke from Radiohead.

Believe it or not, I like musicals. Pippin and Les Miz are my two favorites. "Corner of the Sky" and "Morning Glow" from Pippin and "The Red and the Black" and "Can You Hear The People Sing" from Les Miz.

4 can can 👯. Little cheesy but I liked it (where do I turn my man card back in? :) Reminds me of the classic song ‘Ooh La La’ by the Faces, in which they sing about a can can dancer. Chorus lyrics: “I wish that I knew what I know now, when I was younger”.

Anyway, yes, Musicals can be cheezy, but you are right, it's a different kind of cheese!
Of course, some musicals are NOT really cheezy, like, for example, "Phantom of The Opera" or "Jesus Christ Superstar".
Think of "The Wizard of Oz"! Talk about cheese of a different type!! Cheese with utter and complete class! If either of you have never seen the movie, I'm telling you, you are missing out! It should be on everyone's movie and musical bucket list!

Another one that is high-class cultural cheeze is the Broadway version of "Hair". Killer songs with such clever lyrics telling great stories!
Another would be "Miss Saigon"! In context (the Vietnam War), it is epic!
And let us not forget the epic and tragically touching "Cats"!!!! OMG!
Like so many things, (not just Musicals), context is so important, and sometimes it's everything!

This song was a miss for me but they sang it well. It’s just a little too pop/Disney/cheesy and too generic sounding in its genre to hit home for me.
The older musicals from the 1940s through the 1960s are the best. West Side Story is my favorite musical but I love all the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals too. Oliver is fantastic, from the 1960s. Some songs from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals are good. “Music Of The Night” is a standout for me.

Limburger cheesy... At first, I thought it might be a medium or sharp cheddar (cheese I can handle), but then it began to stink. I finished it, though, out of respect to Natasha. My favorite cheesy song is "If You Leave Me Now" by Chicago. It's a hot, juicy, and very stretchy mozzarella (think pizza with extra cheese!). I thought the song was pretty. Not usually in a Disney/musical kind of mood, so I wouldn't listen to it. I did see Moulin Rouge the film once. Not a fan. But the songs were ok.
They have ok voices for being actors, but real singers would improve this a lot.
You know I say I don't care about lyrics? Well, I lied. To some extent. If they are this much in my face, I cannot ignore them. And those have got to be the most cheese-dripping lyrics I have heard in quite some time. I don't think this is romantic, at all. It's not just the lyrics, though. The presentation makes those lyrics stand out. With a different package, I may be able to swallow it. Like, some really saccharine core wrapped up in a ball of delicious dark bitter chocolate. That's not to say I only enjoy dark and bitter things...I'm bad at these analogies.
What I liked was also the instrumentation in parts and the oddly-timed(?) verse towards the end. It felt delayed, anyway.
Natasha mentioned a few musical songs I enjoy a lot more, personally. Like Memories.
