There was a game that was side scrolling hack and slash single player. The hero has white hair, wears a red jacket, black pants, he has an iron hand and a sword. The game is old. For those who know the name of the game, can you tell me?
Here are some more: Vendetta, Growl, Guardians/Denjin Makai II, Violent Storm, 64th Street - A Detective Story, Brute Force, Captain America & The Avengers, Ninja Baseball Batman, Magic Sword, Warriors Of Fate, Hook, Crystal Of Kings, The Cliffhanger Edward Randy, Asterix, Guardians Of The Hood, Undercover Cops, Zombie Revenge, Dynamite Cop
Thanks! Quite a few I've not played there, but I love Magic Sword, Captain America, and Undercover Cops. I'm not sure I'd class Zombie Revenge and Dynamite Cop as side-scrolling beat'em ups though.
i cen easy choice Violent Storm what is my top 1 and is missiong here btw Violent Storm is only one game Beat em up in histry where you feal hits and same enemys , same Battletoads Double Dragon is missing , he choice wrong Double Dragon right one is Double Dragon 2 1989 and Double Dragon 3 and missiong here aloso Knockle Bash and Armored Warrior number 15 and 5 is shit btw
Good list. You should try Asterix also by Konami. I also quite liked Snes Batman Returns, Snes TMNT IV: Turtles in Time and Batman Forever: The Arcade Game. Surprised you picked Golden Axe over Revenge of Death Adder as well. But cool video, good list.
So, with SoRII-which came bundled with my first ever gaming system (Sega Genesis)-I’ve played it more than I’ve played any other game. Ever. You did a great job explaining it. However, I would add that you can also hold Attack and release for a move. And, there is a Special Attack for a circle impact (just pressing Special), as well as a Forward Special, by pushing Forward + Special. Amazingly, I didn’t realize that holding Down + Jump while being thrown through the air lands you on your feet-saving you extra HP-until I was in my 20s, and replaying the game on holiday. Probably the best soundtrack out there for that time. Amazing bosses. The slow ramp up of intensity and action (having former Stage Bosses become just regular enemies) is perfect. Again, awesome description!!
Thanks! Yeah, I missed some vital information about SoR II. What a game! Definitely one of the best 90s soundtracks. I met Yuzo Koshiro and he signed my SoR records, that was awesome.
i want to fined this one game from my childhood and it was a flash browser game,it goes like this, its a side scrolling beat em ups but your mostly beating up monsters and the character your playing as has these shadow powers and the first level is were a villige is being destroyed by monsters, its not pixelated,i think...and you play as a teen.the game is not 1990s old, more like the mid 2000s or early 2010s,please help if you know anything
Fantastic choices here man, I love beat-em-ups a lot, one of my favorite types of games and you have great ones here. Many of the ones I like the most myself too.
I really am loving replaying and experiencing beat em ups. These 80's and 90's games just are fun to play. Pretty because of nostalga i havent play a beat em up I prefer to golden axe ii. I finally own it on the Genesis again and I havent stopped playing
Me too, beat 'em ups are such instant gratification, I think that's part of the appeal. I've always loved the genre, but to this day I'm still discovering great new arcade beat 'em ups. So many good examples out there! Nostalgia plays a big part for me with regards to favourites, which is why Streets of Rage 2 will always be my number one.
Some classics there mate, yet some I've never heard of so will have to look out for them!! Mine too was SoR1 & 2. Also loved turtles, Simpsons and golden axe. Surprised not to see Ninja Warriors on there, thought u would have loved that. It easily makes my top 3! Great Video!!👍🏻
Vendetta was my all time favourite. In Australia we had the leather queen dry humper. Always used to play co-op with a friend, made for many great laughs as a kid. P.O.W was another fun one for co-op although looking back it doesn't really hold up.
Great picks! Simpsons is my favorite game on the list, I played the heck out of that as a kid. As for any I would add, the Sailor Moon beat-em-ups for the Super Famicom were pretty great.
I do like the Simpsons, but the hit detection is pretty shit when compared to other games in the genre (particularly Capcom's). I've not played the Sailor Moon games, I'll have to give them a try on the Everdrive! Thanks.
A great list and one that must of took a lot of deliberation. Beat 'em ups are one of my favourite genres and I've spent countless hours and £'s on them :) Off the top of my head I'd add Crude Buster, Armoured Warriors, Captain Commando, The Combatribes, Warriors of Fate, Ninja Baseball Bat Man and for a more recent addition Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
+HoratioVanBasten Thanks Shaun! Ninja Baseball Bat Man?... That sounds awesome hahaha! Yeah, it's definitely a great genre, and was certainly hard to narrow down to 15.
That intro! Awesome video Pete. I agree with a lot of that list and especially the top 1! I'll go and check some of these out although I've played most :)
+Redraw4444 Thanks Stephen. Been experimenting with a few different things and seeing what works. These videos take a lot longer to produce but they're fun!
Nicely put together Pete & what a list! Can see some time & thought has been put into this & it shows although I still disagree with number one :) brilliant stuff look forward to the next vid!
Cracking stuff. Some of my faves here also. Simpsons, Final Fight, Double Dragon... Top 5 for me would be Kung Fu Master, Renegade, TNMT, SOR2 and Golden axe.
I loved this video man, so glad to put this games together, there're a few there which I know the franchise but didn't put a lot of effort, others that I love to death. Gr8, just subscribed. Game UP !
Superb video Pete. While my top 15 would look pretty different to yours it's hard to argue with your top 3. Caddies & Dinos would definitely rank highly with me too but my top ten would also have Metamorphic Force, Night Slashers, Armoured Warriors and Golden Axe Revenge of Death adder which I always preferred over the main series. I'm also really looking forward to that new megadrive beat em up (project Y I think it's called) but I haven't seen much updates on the game.
Thanks Rob! Not heard of Metamorphic Force, and not played Night Slashers but have Sen gameplay and it looks awesome. I'll have to try both of them. Cadillacs & Dinosaurs is fucking brilliant, my mates always like a bash on that on my bartop. Yes, the game I was referring to is Project Y, but it's been ages since the last update. Hopefully they'll focus on it more now that Pier Solar HD is done. It looks amazing!
Great list! I haven't heard of many of these arcade exclusive titles, I wish there were 32-bit console versions of them. Ill probably have to emulate them or something. And of course no beat em up list is complete w/o SOR2! The best beat em up I've played but I haven't played too many so my opinion is limiting, I'd like to check those others out.
Thank you! Some of the arcade exclusives are awesome, so well worth checking out if you have the means to emulate them. Cadillacs & dinosaurs is especially good, probably my all-time favourite arcade game. Capcom do some great side-scrolling beat 'em ups, with Final Fight and Knights of the Round being two other fine examples. Streets of Rage 2 is just unbeatable for me in the genre, they got everything right. Great gameplay, graphics, and one of the best video game soundtracks ever! The music was so fitting for the time, as rave culture and techno was becoming really popular. I recently got the soundtrack on vinyl from Data-Discs and listen to it often, I absolutely love it. Let me know what you think if you do get to check out any of the other games. Thanks for commenting ;)
Excellent video Pete and great to see some of the greatest scrolling beam em ups of all time. I couldn't agree with you more with the number one choice. My favourite Megadrive game too. Awesome stuff :-) All the best buddy :-)
+onaretrotip I know it's not official but for me I consider that SOR remix hack as the fourth game as it's just so well made. if you've not played it Pete I highly recommend you google it and download it.
Champion 2D Rob Yes! I have it mate, it's an impressive feat. I'm justdon't know why Sega don't publish it officially and make some money from it, so much work went into it.
A nice selection of games for sure. I definitely want to try that Cadillac/Dinosaur game! I have to disagree with Final Fight only because of the single player console port.
+Repo Man 360 Thanks dude. Definitely give Cadillacs & Dinosaurs a whirl if you have access to MAME, it's so much fun! I know what you're saying about Final Fight, but the arcade game is brilliant.
Nice vid mate and a wonderful selection of games, streets of rage 2 a true beast of a game with as you say a killer soundtrack also I have the hots for blaze lol.... Have a good one bud.
excellent video and excellent choices there Pete, only one ive never played there is guardian heroes i have heard lots of good things about that game though.
+woodlin37 Thanks Karl! Guardian Heroes is one of my favourite Saturn games. They did an HD remake on XBLA so I'd def recommend checking that out if you can.
Being a Nintendo guy it pains me to say that streets of rage 2 is 1 of my favourite beat em ups for all of Konami's and Capcom's dominance in the 90s they couldn't match this. I was surprised however turtles in time never got a mention however awesome video
+ian mcgrath As much as I love the Capcom games, Streets of Rage 2 is just unbeatable for me. Yeah, I've not had much experience with Turtles in Time, that's all, so it didn't make the list. Thanks for watching Ian!
I was expecting to see Turtles in time as number 1, but no, you are no ordinary cliché like other people. I like you list and you clearly choose games for personal oppinions.
Thank you! Sometimes I get a lot of shit for not including certain games, but I want to include the games that I grew up playing and that have stuck with me. It would be terribly boring if we all had the same opinions.
movienaut tbh I've never seen anyone put turtles above sor2. If a list is arcade only or snes only then fair enough. I must of played through sor2 a hundred times and I still enjoy it. The game is a masterpiece!
Awesome vid mate. I hadn't heard of the Saturn Dungeons and Dragons Games. I have a modded Saturn so I shall be downloading them for sure. Pretty much agree with the order too. Streets of Rage 2 has to be number 1. Incredible game.
+8-bit Andy Cheers Andy. Oh the D&D games are awesome. Great that you have a modded Saturn as the D&D Collection can be quite pricey. SoR 2 had to be number one, one of my all-time favourite games of any genre!
amazing video Pete!! One of my all time favorite genres. Cads & Dino's right up there for me too. One Omission there that I would have included is Renegade, actually the computer only Target Renegade was even better IMO (Oceans own sequel). TMNT and Golden Axe go without saying. Best recent ones I've played are Dragons Crown (very much like The D&D games) and Double Dragon Neon which is epic! Oh the D&D games game out on the PS3 in Japan too 2 years back :)
+AdiSneakerFreak Cheers Steve! Not tried Dragons Crown, is that on PS3? I'll def pick that one up if it's like the D&D games. And didn't know that D&D came out in Japan on PS3, was that download only?
+onaretrotip It was a digital only game in the west but Japan and asia got a physical release. I imported a copy a while back. Well worth picking up as they're pretty much arcade perfect.
Cheers Steve! I just liked up Dragon's Crown and it looks awesome so I'll def grab that. Didn't know about D&D so I'll have to import a copy. Yeah, Double Dragon Neon is great!
That's awesome, Joshua! My niece and nephew (who are three and five respectively) love playing the Mega Drive and beat 'em ups (like The Simpsons and Turtles) on my bartop arcade.
absolutely loved that pete buddy :) my top 3 would probably be goldenaxe. cadalacs and dinosaurs and final fight.... but how can I leave double dragon out lol
+jay thomas (GodOfRygar71) Thanks Jay! It's one of my favourite genres too, such fond memories and it's great for 'pick up and play' gaming. Thanks for watching mate.
Streets of Rage 2 is funny that it is better than 1 and 3. 1 is too bland and 3 is too much, but 2 is perfect. I had only played 1 before and thought people talking about Streets of Rage being a great game, were ignorant, until I played Streets of Rage 2 yesterday, then I realized how perfect it is. Rockin music, great controls, great everything. I'm going to play it again.
Great video pete, nice commentary as well bud, I had a guess on your top 3 before watching the video and got it right! Ha, know you too well from watching all your vids :p
+onaretrotip haha yes mate :) I really like the genre to, I used to love playing beat em ups in the arcades as a kid, golden axe, simpsons, turtles etc, the first beat em up I owned on a console was power rangers on the snes, that's why it had to go in my list, really decent game as well :)
+Retro Heaven yeah I grew up playing them at the arcades so I have really fond memories of beat em ups. Not played Power Rangers but it looked decent from your video!
Thanks! I hope so too. So excited for Paprium, I've followed it for years (as Project Y) and not been so excited for a game since the 90s. Hope it delivers. I've got it on pre-order with the arcade stick.
I miss this genre of games Makin Games in the UK is coming out with Raging Justice for the XB1 and steam cant wait for it! I will always love SOR 1 over 2 Adam was my guy!
I miss it too. There's a new Mega Drive beat em up in the works, so can't wait for that. I love SoR but 2 is the better game for me, it just had such gorgeous sprites and the music was that little bit better. Thanks for watching!
Scrolled down a few dozen comments and didn't see anyone mention Dragon's Crown. That's my favorite beat em up of all time, followed by D&D Shadow over Mystara. Nice list though!
Some great choices but I strongly suggest you check out: Warriors of Fate, Sengoku 3, The Gladiator (Road of the Sword), Osman, Gaia Crusaders and Ganryu. :)
Jesus fucking Christ, thank you for this video! I played Guardian Heroes many years ago but I didn't remember the name or which console it was for. I finally know! :D
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs was a personal favorite of mine too. I had first played it in Las Vegas while arcades were pretty wide spread in the 1990's in some of the casinos. Fantastic list- I've played all of them except the one mentioned for the Sega Saturn- Guardian Heroes???Love to try it out though. Again, excellent compilation. Thanks for sharing- did you ever play Captain Commando and the Commandeers by Capcom?
Thanks, Jeff! Glad you liked the list. Guardian Heroes is great fun, I'd thoroughly recommend it if you get the opportunity to play it. I haven't played Captain Commando, no. Worth playing? If so I'll give it a bash on Coinops.
So.. Arthur, with the help of Knights Lancelot and Percival, is sent by Merlin on a mission to defeat the evil king Garibaldi and unite England? I didn't hear you the first or the second time... :P lol
Since the SNES version of FINAL FIGHT was single player, you knew you were a bad ass if you beat that game....and you knew your thumbs were so sore from doing so,haha!!That wrestler boss is soooo much more tougher then the end boss.
Hi great video, I also loved sor 2. By the way, looking for a beat them up I used to play as a kid on arcade cabinet but can't find it anywhere. It was a fast paced game, with some magic skills and a levelling system. In my memories it is like DnD: Shadow over Mystara but the game itself and the GUI was way more polished. Any help ?
Blimey, there are quite a few that fit that description, like Magician Lord on the MVS, although I suppose that's not really a beat 'em up. Could be one of several.
I`m loving your top 15 list here Pete mate, quick question, i know alot of people who love streets of rage 2, more than 1 and 3, the reasons that you gave like, graphically a step up, more better sprites, varied locations and everything, is that why gamers prefer this game more ? I love the 1st game more, but that is just me. Excellent video mate i love these.
Thanks, Mel! Hmm, I guess it's just personal preference and nostalgia really. I have nostalgia for both Streets of Rage and SoR II, and played them both to death as a kid. For me the reason II is the best is just a combination of things - the music, chunkier and more detailed sprites, better characters (LOVE Max), were all better IMO. And I much prefer the special moves of II rather than the police car in the first game.
Good list. Most of my favorites are on there (Golden Axe, Final Fight and Guardian Heroes (yay!)) and the commentary good (though the Punisher sound was somewhat muted). I also don't know if Splatterhouse is a Beat 'em up. My question: Have you played Dragon's Crown for the PS3? That's the closest retail game I've seen in recent years that is similar to that style of game. It got a little repetitive but I enjoyed it a lot.
+Ras137 Thanks a lot. Just noticed the Punisher sound is really low, noooooooo! Don't know what happened there. I haven't played Dragons Crown, but someone else said it's similar to the D&D games, so I'll def pick it up. Thanks for the recommendation.
they are indeed. have you played the others i mentioned? i discovered a lot of them a while ago through the website racketboy. you know how they have made modern sequels to games like mega man and double dragon but kept the original style? they should do this with konami and campcom beat em ups. also seeing as sega is still going and they made streets of rage and golden axe, a sequel to those would be great.
I have indeed! I'm not a huge fan of Mega Man, but I did like the modern Double Dragon. Good that they've kept the style the same. I'd love to see Streets of Rage 4 if they kept the gameplay and graphics thee same. Have you played Streets of Rage Remake? That's awesome. There's a Streets of Rage like beat 'em up coming out in the next few weeks called Paprium (its working title was Project Y), from Watermelon Games. I've been excited for that for years, I'm really hoping it'll live up to my expectations.
Renegade that I played on my commodore 64 but was from the arcade, looked more like double dragon as is from that early era, I'm not sure it could push any of these games down the list but it had a real The Warriors style grittiness! Of course streets of rage (2) is top, I agree with that, I'm a fanboy... but then there are so many brawlers and each is beautiful in its own right. Also River City Ransom is interesting and Mighty Final Fight is a nice sorta spin-off/twist on the Final Fight games. I forgot about Guardian Heroes but still can't play it, but that reminds me of Dragon's Crown you should definitely try as well, it is a modern day brawler in a dungeons and dragons like world slightly pushed in the anime direction but not much, just looks and plays fantastic!
Renegade is a favourite of many I think, from the C64/Amstrad CPC days. I like The Warriors comparison, love that film. Mighty Final Fight is one I still haven't tried, but I've been meaning to play it as it does look great. Dragon's Crown is awesome, I have that on PS3 and Vita. I also have the first one, Princess Crown, on Saturn. Quite a language barrier there but I believe a fan translation is being worked on. Thanks for watching, and for the recommendations!
I watched entire longplay of Princess Crown (I don't have a Saturn yet) I thought it was in English but can't remember now. Odin Sphere is supposed to be related too? Those and Dragon's Crown are beautiful games: Modern retro magic.
I checked the longplay of Princess Crown would have been the PSP version in full Enlgish :) Also Code of Princess for 3DS I've just spotted looks interesting...
Ah, I didn't realise the PSP version had an English option. I just checked out Code of Princess, that looks awesome, reminds me of Guardian Heroes. I'd love to import it, but I'd have to get another 3DS as they're region locked.
I suppose you could consider it more advanced, as it added stuff (like reintroducing multiple endings), but in my opinion 2 is the better game. 2 has better music and characters, and most importantly the flow of 2 is so much better than 3. 3 felt a bit slow paced at points. Still a great game though.
I agree about the 2 has better music and graphic too, but the game play of the 3 is more advanced than the 2, in the 3 you can run and scroll up and down + level up, I like both of them but I love the 3 more than the 2, Cheers
My list will be 1 per series, console games only 1. TMNT 4: Turtles in Time 2. King of Dragons 3. Streets of Rage 4 4. Maximum Carnage 5. Final Fight 3 6. Golden Axe 3 7. Knights of the Round Table 8. Batman Returns 9. Alien Storm 10. Splatterhouse 3
@@onaretrotip I put a lot more value into gameplay than I do into other aspects. SOR2 may be the best thematically but SOR4 feels much smoother and has a greater variety of attacks.
Help me, please! I was a child when I played with our Amiga 500, so I can't remember the game I'm looking for. I only remember that it was a beat em up, and that you could choose the next level when you cleared one, like in a tree of choices (and you could also choose an already cleared level and beat em up from left to right!). Please, anyone remembers the title of that game? I know these are only a few informations, but it's all I can remember!
How can you be really disappointed in someone else's subjective opinion when it has nothing to do with any official list and there are no right or wrong answers?
Definitely. Sadly I didn't really play any of the Neo Geo beat 'em ups as a kid; the only SNK games I ever seemed to see in the arcades were either fighters or shooters. I'm making up for that now though with MAME, thanks for the recommendations.
Oh really? I love the first one, but 2 was just perfect in every way for me. Plus I love playing as Max, who seems to be an unpopular choice for some reason. Either way, a great series. Sorry for the late response, Johnny, I must've missed this comment.
i want to fined this one game from my childhood and it was a flash browser game,it goes like this, its a side scrolling beat em ups but your mostly beating up monsters and the character your playing as has these shadow powers and the first level is were a villige is being destroyed by monsters, its not pixelated,i think...and you play as a teen.the game is not 1990s old, more like the mid 2000s or early 2010s,please help if you know anything
Yea some great choices there buddy AvP being my favourite You can keep your turtles I hate that game and put Dungeons and dragons in its place, much better game 😎👍 But you picked the best other wise . Great video mate 😃
+Nintendo Arcade Cheers Alex! Alien vs Predator is a cracking game, only discovered it about two years ago. Love Dungeons and Dragons too, have them on the bartop arcade cab but recently managed to pick up the Saturn version. Another great Saturn game that didn't see the light of day in the West.
onaretrotip Can u pls tell me the names of the game with characters at the opening moments of this video at 0.23,0.26,0.38,0.44,0.49,0.53,1:22, and 1.28
0:23 Jimmy Lee (Double Dragon) 0:26 Max (Streets of Rage 2) 0:38 Shiva (Streets of Rage 2) 0:44 Tyris Flare (Golden Axe) 0:49 Undead Hero (Guardian Heroes) 0:53 Guy (Final Fight) 1:22 Arthur (Knights of the Round) 1:28 Axel (Streets of Rage)
An absolute pleasure to watch Pete! Truly a great genre of gaming with in that late 80-90's era, you just blasted out game after game, and to finish the list with SOR2 was just the icing on cake. Still to this day that game is still looked upon for its bangin soundtracks. Just an absolute beast of a best em up! Cheers dude well done!
Thanks Luke, kind words indeed! It was a great era for gaming, especially for 2D games and arcade games. So many fond memories in this list. I still play and enjoy SoR 2 to this day, and the soundtrack still holds up. I'd happily listen to the music in the car!
MAN ive been looking for a 4-6 player beat em up that had a mage and different champions but i remember it was for the pc , the mage use to freeze and u had to input commands to do special moves. man i cant rememver the name
Yeah i think its underrated. Their is another one I think is cool called yakuza its a Morden day beat em up its on the ps2 ps3 and ps4 check it out you might like it.
I used to play a game in which they had sword if you play single player the character would come with horse if multiplayer both on foot can you find the game
You are an Amiga fanboy, have you ever played Franko beat m up? Streets or Rage 2 is nice but too overrated in the end, most people enjoy it because of its great music but as a game isnt that superb. Punisher,Final Fight and King of Dragons are the beat em ups I played most, they have the most replay value for me!
No, I haven't played Franko. Any good? I know Streets of Rage 2 isn't the best beat 'em up in technical terms, but it's definitely my personal favourite, and the game I still go back to after over 25 years of playing it.
Nice video, it's more your personal favorites list than the best gameplay / quality.Streets of Rage 2 is nowhere near the best on the list in terms of quality or gameplay. It was decent back in the day, but it has to be THE most overrated scrolling beat em up of all time. Be honest with yourselves - it was good for a Megadrive / Genesis but I'd put it approximately in the top 25-30 beat em ups ever released. It's average. Here are just a few random ones (in no particular order) that are superior to SOR in every way. Double Dragon 1 Sengoku 3 Knights of Valour Undercover Cops Growl Zero Team Cadillacs and Dinosaurs Aliens vs Predator The Punisher Honourable mentions: Vendetta Shadow Force Night Slasher It has nothing to do with it's age either as Double Dragon 1 still stands up as a solid game today. (notice, I haven't included Final Fight in the list as the gameplay is way to static, repetitive and generic, yes it was very popular and a significant release but others have easily improved on it since) Now I know nothing can or will ever replace everyone's nostalgic LOVE for Streets of Rage - but let's face it, the game is nowhere near the best example of a scrolling beat em up. It's like saying the first you fancied in infant school or as a teenager is still the best all round women on the whole of planet Earth. SOR is arguably inferior to every game in the first cluster listed above Play Sengoku 3 find it on an emulator and seriously tell yourself that it not FAR superior than your number one choice. Note: Personally I wouldn't include games like the Simpson or Teenage Turtles Arcade as they are nothing more than franchise licensed Button-Bashers there is zero skill required to play them, the developers didn't really care about the fighting content and the titles were just the most popular names at the time. Again these are nowhere near the best beat em ups - the most popular - - Yes. I am not trying to convince anyone here and I know the majority of you will disagree with my opinion but that is Exactly why the Streets of Rage series is one of The most overrated of ALL time.
Thanks! Oh, it's absolutely my personal favourites list rather than a top fifteen. Actually, more of a list of beat 'em ups I have the most nostalgia for really. From a technical standpoint, games like The Simpsons are absolutely awful. Some great ones you mentioned though, and I'm still discovering fantastic arcade beat 'em ups to this day, thanks to MAME and Coinops, etc. I just love Streets of Rage though; I never get tired of playing it even after all this time.
onaretrotip Thanks for being honest and not just another blind fan boy. That's a good quality to have and your videos are great. There are are lot of gamers around who's judgement is blinded by loyalty over quality. For others who believe SOR2 is the best scrolling beat em up off all time there's a whole world of far superior examples to discover. Keep up the good work !!!
There was a game that was side scrolling hack and slash single player. The hero has white hair, wears a red jacket, black pants, he has an iron hand and a sword. The game is old. For those who know the name of the game, can you tell me?
🤔
Here are some more:
Vendetta, Growl, Guardians/Denjin Makai II, Violent Storm, 64th Street - A Detective Story, Brute Force, Captain America & The Avengers, Ninja Baseball Batman, Magic Sword, Warriors Of Fate, Hook, Crystal Of Kings, The Cliffhanger Edward Randy, Asterix, Guardians Of The Hood, Undercover Cops, Zombie Revenge, Dynamite Cop
Thanks! Quite a few I've not played there, but I love Magic Sword, Captain America, and Undercover Cops. I'm not sure I'd class Zombie Revenge and Dynamite Cop as side-scrolling beat'em ups though.
Yeah I know. Shoukd have mentioned Armored Warriors, Shadow Force, Robo Army or Captain Commando instead. Thanks for this video.
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching!
i cen easy choice Violent Storm what is my top 1 and is missiong here btw Violent Storm is only one game Beat em up in histry where you feal hits and same enemys , same Battletoads Double Dragon is missing , he choice wrong Double Dragon right one is Double Dragon 2 1989 and Double Dragon 3 and missiong here aloso Knockle Bash and Armored Warrior
number 15 and 5 is shit btw
Good list. You should try Asterix also by Konami. I also quite liked Snes Batman Returns, Snes TMNT IV: Turtles in Time and Batman Forever: The Arcade Game. Surprised you picked Golden Axe over Revenge of Death Adder as well. But cool video, good list.
Asterix is a great one; love the art style! Yeah, too many good beat 'em ups to list. A crying shame that Revenge of Death Adder never got a port.
@@onaretrotip Yeah that game would have been great on Saturn.
Great video mate! Some absolute classics there... was a nice trip down memory lane remembering all the money I wasted on arcade machines hahaha.
Thanks mate! Hahaha yeah me too.
Thanks Mike! It's a popular genre for sure, glad some of your favourites were on the list.
I remember finding Cadillacs & Dinosaurs in an AMF Bowling when I was a kid and quickly falling in love with it. Definitely a gem!
+Blast Processing It's awesome isn't it! I found it in a hotel on holiday once and I've loved it ever since.
Perfect sunday morning viewing! Top work well done
Thank you very much, Michael!
Nice list. My favourite are Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Captain commando (very similar to Final fight and C&D) and total slaughter -> Night slashers.
Thanks! I need to spend some time with Captain Commando on Coinops, it looks awesome! I'll check out Night Slashers too, thanks for the suggestions.
+Superquintendo Cheers Craig, glad there were a few that are new to you. I'll confess to never having really played Ninja Warriors much.
Vendetta was my all time favourite. In Australia we had the leather queen dry humper. Always used to play co-op with a friend, made for many great laughs as a kid. P.O.W was another fun one for co-op although looking back it doesn't really hold up.
I loved POW back in the day too!
Anyone ever played Vendetta? That game was a blast used so many money on that one! :O
No, but someone else recommended it.
Thanks.
Some really great memories here.
For me too! Glad I could stir up some fond memories, Andre.
Scott Pilgrim vs the World is an awesome game. Have to totally agree with you there. The music is also excellent :-)
That's guardian heroes for the Saturn looks really cool mate! Never heard of it before i will check that out on TH-cam now, thanks
+Retro Heaven Oh mate, that's a belter. Definitely recommend that!
Fantastic video sir. I can really appreciate I ate all the work you put into this one
+Matt and Jaelon Thanks, it took a while to put together. Just really annoyed that I messed up the volume on number ten, but hey ho.
That intro! Awesome video Pete. I agree with a lot of that list and especially the top 1! I'll go and check some of these out although I've played most :)
+Matropolis Haha, thanks mate. Glad you liked the little intro. Great that there are a few you haven't tried, well worth checking out!
+onaretrotip they all look great, fair play
Top notch video mate. I've been super busy, so haven't seen much since the Dreamcast vids, but the new direction looks great!
+Redraw4444 Thanks Stephen. Been experimenting with a few different things and seeing what works. These videos take a lot longer to produce but they're fun!
excellent picks there Pete, bloody tough to do I bet as well!!
Cheers Stu, yeah it was tough choosing and took a while to edit. Good fun trying something different though!
Awesome list! Beat em ups are my favorite category of games!
Thanks dude! One of my favourites too, they always have great graphics and music, and good replay value.
Spoken like a true gentleman
Great video. Always hard to put videos like this together with so many great games to choose from.
+Let's Talk Retro Thanks! Yeah, it's always hard choosing. Think I've changed my mind on a couple already, hahaha!
I like the insight during the Knights of Valour part
Ah thanks, Gavin! I think that's a really interesting little story, so I'm glad someone else appreciates it.
This is a really good list.I can't wait to try a lot of these games!
Thank you! I hope you find some that you enjoy.
@@onaretrotip I certainly have my friend. The old school beat em ups have had a revival in my house.
Stonking video Pete!
A few I've not played before which I'll certainly try!
Almost thought you were American with some of the early narration 😉
+GRUSS Newton Thanks Russ! Glad there were a few you haven't tried. Haha, American? Why's that?
Nicely put together Pete & what a list! Can see some time & thought has been put into this & it shows although I still disagree with number one :) brilliant stuff look forward to the next vid!
+anyoldusername. Cheers Pat! Haha, I know your thoughts on number one, but it's such a favourite of mine.
Awesome list mate, sor2 and final fight my top 2.
Very good top 2!
Cracking stuff. Some of my faves here also. Simpsons, Final Fight, Double Dragon... Top 5 for me would be Kung Fu Master, Renegade, TNMT, SOR2 and Golden axe.
Cheers Chris, good top 5 there! I think SoR 2 would be in many peoples' top 5s.
I loved this video man, so glad to put this games together, there're a few there which I know the franchise but didn't put a lot of effort, others that I love to death.
Gr8, just subscribed. Game UP !
Thanks, Rodrigo! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great video & good list it takes me back to those good old days especially Golden Axe
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. The good old days :)
Awesome stuff :-)
All the best buddy :-)
Cheers Matt, such a great genre. Streets of Rage 2 is such an awesome game, still really enjoyable now. I'd love a 4th!
+onaretrotip I know it's not official but for me I consider that SOR remix hack as the fourth game as it's just so well made. if you've not played it Pete I highly recommend you google it and download it.
Champion 2D Rob Yes! I have it mate, it's an impressive feat. I'm justdon't know why Sega don't publish it officially and make some money from it, so much work went into it.
some great choices in that lot pete, cool vid mate :)
Thanks Paul!
Can't disagree with most of them choices mate. Great vid.
+RetroGamerAddict Thanks Lee!
Great list. Consoles will always be in the shadows of the arcade when it comes to beat em ups.
Thanks! Yes, they certainly will.
Streets of rage 2 at the top not sure if I prefer the first over the second but it's hard to argue its greatness, nice video too.
+Sega Stupid Cheers Glenn! I do love the first one, but the second is the best in the series for me. A perfect game.
Am I only one that feels the asterix arcade game doesn't get enough love?
I've never played that! Worth checking out then?
onaretrotip definitely mate
Nice vid mate and a wonderful selection of games, streets of rage 2 a true beast of a game with as you say a killer soundtrack also I have the hots for blaze lol.... Have a good one bud.
Hahaha, don't blame you! Thanks mate.
excellent video and excellent choices there Pete, only one ive never played there is guardian heroes i have heard lots of good things about that game though.
+Champion 2D Rob cheers Rob, I'll pick that up!
I got my nephew who was born in 2000 to play streets of rage 2 with me and he thought it was amazing
That's awesome, Joshua! My niece and nephew (who are three and five respectively) love playing the Mega Drive and beat 'em ups (like The Simpsons and Turtles) on my bartop arcade.
This man knows him some Beat 'em ups. 2 thumbs ^
Thanks dude! :)
absolutely loved that pete buddy :) my top 3 would probably be goldenaxe. cadalacs and dinosaurs and final fight.... but how can I leave double dragon out lol
+steve36207 Glad you enjoyed it Steve! Haha, I know, it's so hard to choose.
Awesome video there pete some great choices of one of my top 5 game genres, its Jay glasper from FB if ur unsure who I am lol
Couldn't agree more, Jay. What a game.
Great video pete, nice commentary as well bud, I had a guess on your top 3 before watching the video and got it right! Ha, know you too well from watching all your vids :p
Haha, well guessed Johnny! Bet you noticed a few that were on your list, but a fair few that weren't. Such a great genre, it's hard to choose.
Nice list.i hope side scrollers will make a come back.only new one ive heard of is a game called paprium which is going to be released for megadrive
Awesome video
Thanks mate!
Scrolled down a few dozen comments and didn't see anyone mention Dragon's Crown. That's my favorite beat em up of all time, followed by D&D Shadow over Mystara. Nice list though!
A bit too new for this list, but a great game. Shadow Over Mystara is superb as well!
Some great choices but I strongly suggest you check out: Warriors of Fate, Sengoku 3, The Gladiator (Road of the Sword), Osman, Gaia Crusaders and Ganryu. :)
Thanks for the recommendations. The only one I've played there is Ganryu, which is okay. I'll check out the rest on MAME.
Jesus fucking Christ, thank you for this video!
I played Guardian Heroes many years ago but I didn't remember the name or which console it was for.
I finally know! :D
Hahaha you're welcome! Glad I could remind you which game it was; that's awesome :)
Cadilacs and dinosaurs is so good. Always wished they made a movie with Mustafa played by the rock. How good would that be!?
Oh my god, that would be awesome LOL
:P lol
Oh my god, I just listened to that bit and I never realised I said that line twice hahahaha. What a twat!
Since the SNES version of FINAL FIGHT was single player, you knew you were a bad ass if you beat that game....and you knew your thumbs were so sore from doing so,haha!!That wrestler boss is soooo much more tougher then the end boss.
Haha, true!
There was less sprites on screen in the Snes version :/. Still an impressive port all things considered
Thanks for the recommendation.
love most of these. i'd add revenge of death adder, battle circuit, vendetta, hook, nightslashers and warrior blade.
Some great suggestions! I only recently discovered Battle Circuit and Warrior Blade, they're awesome.
they are indeed. have you played the others i mentioned? i discovered a lot of them a while ago through the website racketboy. you know how they have made modern sequels to games like mega man and double dragon but kept the original style? they should do this with konami and campcom beat em ups. also seeing as sega is still going and they made streets of rage and golden axe, a sequel to those would be great.
I've been excited for that for years, I'm really hoping it'll live up to my expectations.
yeah i did play it and was really impressed. and in regards to paprium i hadnt heard of it until you told me. it looks really good.
Crossing my fingers that it plays as good as it looks!
1. crime fighters
2. bare knuckle 2
3. moonstone
Don't think I've heard of Moonstone. I'll have to check it out! Thanks.
SoR2 is like a little piece from Heaven.
It certainly is :)
alien vs predator looked amazing back then in Arcades
It even looks great now, it must have been mind-blowing back then! Sadly I never encountered it back in the day.
Battle Circuit is AMAZING
Yes! Brilliant game.
I checked the longplay of Princess Crown would have been the PSP version in full Enlgish :)
Also Code of Princess for 3DS I've just spotted looks interesting...
Ah, I didn't realise the PSP version had an English option. I just checked out Code of Princess, that looks awesome, reminds me of Guardian Heroes. I'd love to import it, but I'd have to get another 3DS as they're region locked.
If you would have played Golden Axe Revenge Of Death Adder, it would definitely have been on this list.
Yeah, should've definitely included that in hindsight! What a travesty that it never got a console port.
Why not Street of Rage 3? it is more advanced than the 2
I suppose you could consider it more advanced, as it added stuff (like reintroducing multiple endings), but in my opinion 2 is the better game.
@@cookingarts7 I agree 3 is the best to me too
good job
Thank you very much!
My list will be 1 per series, console games only
1. TMNT 4: Turtles in Time
2. King of Dragons
3. Streets of Rage 4
4. Maximum Carnage
5. Final Fight 3
6. Golden Axe 3
7. Knights of the Round Table
8. Batman Returns
9. Alien Storm
10. Splatterhouse 3
Great list. Surprised by Streets of Rage 4 and Golden Axe 3 though!
@@onaretrotip I put a lot more value into gameplay than I do into other aspects. SOR2 may be the best thematically but SOR4 feels much smoother and has a greater variety of attacks.
Fantastic! No stinkers on this list. Be sure to check out OpenBOR for nice Beat em up fangames!
Thanks mate! Ah, love Beats of Rage :)
Not much to go on!
Saw Guardian Heroes and Streets of Rage 2 so I clicked.
You obviously have impeccable taste!
hmm captain commando didn't make this list tho, but gr8 list regardless
Shamefully, I'd never actually played it when compiling this list, but have since. Great game! Thanks, glad you liked it.
Really disappointed not to see vendetta/Crime fighters 2 by knomai fantastic game with a hulk hogan lookalike
Ah, never played it. Looks good!
How can you be really disappointed in someone else's subjective opinion when it has nothing to do with any official list and there are no right or wrong answers?
You missed out the Neo-Geo fighters. Games like Mutation Nation, Robo Army and Sengoku 3 may have been viable candidates.
Definitely. Sadly I didn't really play any of the Neo Geo beat 'em ups as a kid; the only SNK games I ever seemed to see in the arcades were either fighters or shooters. I'm making up for that now though with MAME, thanks for the recommendations.
great list pete,.. as good as sor2 was I like the 1st one a bit better...
No idea I'm afraid; I never really played Flash games.
@@onaretrotip well,it cant be helped i guess
I would put Captain commando instead of splaterhouse 2
I hadn't actually played that at the time of making this video, but now I'd have to agree with you.
Yea some great choices there buddy
AvP being my favourite
You can keep your turtles I hate that game and put Dungeons and dragons in its place, much better game 😎👍
But you picked the best other wise .
Great video mate 😃
+Nintendo Arcade Cheers Alex! Alien vs Predator is a cracking game, only discovered it about two years ago. Love Dungeons and Dragons too, have them on the bartop arcade cab but recently managed to pick up the Saturn version. Another great Saturn game that didn't see the light of day in the West.
onaretrotip Can u pls tell me the names of the game with characters at the opening moments of this video at 0.23,0.26,0.38,0.44,0.49,0.53,1:22, and 1.28
0:23 Jimmy Lee (Double Dragon)
0:26 Max (Streets of Rage 2)
0:38 Shiva (Streets of Rage 2)
0:44 Tyris Flare (Golden Axe)
0:49 Undead Hero (Guardian Heroes)
0:53 Guy (Final Fight)
1:22 Arthur (Knights of the Round)
1:28 Axel (Streets of Rage)
An absolute pleasure to watch Pete! Truly a great genre of gaming with in that late 80-90's era, you just blasted out game after game, and to finish the list with SOR2 was just the icing on cake. Still to this day that game is still looked upon for its bangin soundtracks. Just an absolute beast of a best em up! Cheers dude well done!
Thanks Luke, kind words indeed! It was a great era for gaming, especially for 2D games and arcade games. So many fond memories in this list. I still play and enjoy SoR 2 to this day, and the soundtrack still holds up. I'd happily listen to the music in the car!
wow!
Is that a good wow or a bad one?
My favorite is Little Fighter 2
Never heard of that one!
@@onaretrotip Its a kinda forgoten freeware for pc, but is worth a try!
i play boat x men and the punicher today on arcade cute fun
Yeah, still an absolute blast!
MAN ive been looking for a 4-6 player beat em up that had a mage and different champions but i remember it was for the pc , the mage use to freeze and u had to input commands to do special moves. man i cant rememver the name
Hey have you ever played the bouncer on the ps2 its a beat em up game
I haven't, but I've heard good things. Is it any good?
Yeah i think its underrated. Their is another one I think is cool called yakuza its a Morden day beat em up its on the ps2 ps3 and ps4 check it out you might like it.
Yakuza is awesome! The spiritual successor to Shenmue :)
Should check out Bad ass babes the game available on Steam for PC. Unique and cheesy plot with solid gameplay and digitized sprites
I'll check it out, thanks for the recommendation!
I used to play a game in which they had sword if you play single player the character would come with horse if multiplayer both on foot can you find the game
Hmm, assuming that it's not on this list, perhaps Capcom's Warriors of Fate?
onaretrotip thanks man that is the game I was looking for you're the best
Sengoku 3 neo geo or arcade
I've shamefully never played it, I'll check it out on MAME!
Franko is a Polish cult beatmup and hilarious on Amiga (and Pc-dos),search for it,its fun :)
I will!
Double Dragon 1
Sengoku 3
Knights of Valour
Undercover Cops
Growl
Zero Team
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
Aliens vs Predator
The Punisher
Honourable mentions:
Vendetta
Shadow Force
Night Slasher
It has nothing to do with it's age either as Double Dragon 1 still stands up as a solid game today.
(notice, I haven't included Final Fight in the list as the gameplay is way to static, repetitive and generic, yes it was very popular and a significant release but others have easily improved on it since)
Now I know nothing can or will ever replace everyone's nostalgic LOVE for Streets of Rage - but let's face it, the game is nowhere near the best example of a scrolling beat em up.
It's like saying the first you fancied in infant school or as a teenager is still the best all round women on the whole of planet Earth.
SOR is arguably inferior to every game in the first cluster listed above
Play Sengoku 3 find it on an emulator and seriously tell yourself that it not FAR superior than your number one choice.
Thanks, Barry. I'll try!
captain commando
Good choice, Ricardo!
why isn't the fire in the final fight video segment not hurting you at all?
Vendetta??
I don't really have much experience with Vendetta, but looks great. I should have a session on CoinOps soon!
Brawl Brothers. Combatribes.
Hmm, don't think I've played Brawl Brothers!
