I noticed that you didn’t put any seasoning in my mom and my grandma used to fix this all the time and they would dice onions and sauté it with some type of seasoning. Oil always delicious today. I still give it to my family. Thank you for sharing.

I cook mine with fat back 😋 I fry the fat back in a lil grease then I sauté the okra then I add frozen corn and can of diced tomatoes. Let everything simmer for about a hour. Deliciousness 😊

My great granma, grandma and mom made this all the time for dinner, especially in the summer with the fresh tomatoes, okra and corn in season..
They all added some kind of beef in the dish and served it with white rice.
    It was delicious!😋

Hello Chris!! I love your show!!!! I never knew there were so many different versions of soul food!! I live in Texas! Down here we call this dish "Okra Gumbo"! We also eat it as a side, but we also eat it as a Main Dish!! When we add smoked sausage, shrimp, chicken fajitas, and last but the most common is ground beef!! My Mother would make it this way and serve it over rice, with a tossed salad and hot buttered bread!! She also put a little chili powder in it to boost the flavor!! We call that a Texas thing lol!! Can't wait to see what you cook next!! P.S. I believe we are about the same age, because when you talk about the old cooks lol!! I say yes Lord, I was blessed with the best cooks on both sides of my family!! Their rule was that if you messed up a dish, you had to eat it lol. ❤✌🙏😁

I always render the fat from 2-3 chopped slices of bacon, sauté white onions in the bacon fat. Then add chopped okra, canned tomatoes, can of drained whole kernel corn and a small can of tomato sauce. Then season to taste with black pepper, salt, a pinch of cayenne pepper and about a tablespoon of sugar. I simmer for about 20 minutes, covered. Serve as a side dish along with some cornbread made from scratch.
