My father had an 2016 s350 4 matic,and it's probably the same thing with s400
the reduction in noise is probably more due to the pre and post injection phasing that makes it less diesel knock. A feature of BMW engines for a while.

The new Lexus LS 460 still doesn’t compare to the S Class. I currently own a 2014 Lexus GS 350 F Sport. Also, the LS 460 is less expensive with fewer options.

The low noise is more to do with the new combustion chamber / cylinder shape which means quicker and more efficient combustion.
Going by the outside noise levels, insulation definitely has a role to play

I hate fake exhaust pipes as well ... Btw the reason why is like this it's because of the EU anti pollution regulations , and with the pipes under the car aiming the ground , the exhaust gas should be , in part , absorbed by the asphalt ending up in less pollution in the air..
Another design reason should be that we are in a transition Era between gas engines and electric engines (with no need of combustion and so no need for pipes) and cars industry is making us get used to fake pipes and no pipes at all !

EHCX absolut, beides sind gute Autos, keine Frage. Ich meinte vielmehr, dass der m50d Motor den 7er deutlich stärker und souveräner anschiebt mit 400ps und quadturbo, als der mit 340ps in der S-Klasse.
Und somit ist es auch meiner Meinung nach das bessere Diesel Auto^^
