Had an Uncle that died in '08 and before his casket was lowered into the ground in the cemetery of the Catholic church in Erath, LA a man sang a song in French to my Uncle. I later found out that it was the one & only D. L. Menard who sang the song.

I spent a few days in Breaux Bridge in 1973 and enjoyed great Cajun sounds live. Wish I could go there once again meeting the friendly Cajun people. "The Back Door" is part of my Cajun record collection. Wonderful! Greetings from Germany

A Cajun legend! The Backdoor is statistically the single greatest Cajun single ever. A great accomplishment and living legacy....I am grateful to have found this video

Brings back good memories. Himels down in Gonzales. Got gumbo one night. Shrimp did not come in fresh that day. They are not in the gumbo. Go in next day. Oysters not fresh in that day. They are not in the gumbo that night. Some woman is giving her toddler a sip of beer. Lynched anywhere else in the US. No one bat's an eye here. Some dude just pulled 1/2 crab carapace from his gumbo and is beating crap out of it with his knife handle. My high school French was no use. It's French as spoken 200 years ago. Love the Cajun people.

I saw D.L. Menard and his band play, when, along with Eddie LeJeune, Ken Smith, and some others, he did a tour of England in about 1988. It was a great night. I had a brief conversation with him afterwards, and he signed a small poster as did various others who performed. Unfortunately I lost it when moving house many years ago. RIP DL Menard.

I think I more or less understand the lyrics.... except for the key phrase 'J'ai passé dedans la porte d'en arrière' ('I entered through the back door', no doubt, but obviously it is not to be understood literally). I guess it means doing something unseen, something that should not be seen, or something illegal. There may be a sexual connotation too. So, for what it's worth:
Moi et ma belle on avait été au bal
...Me and my girl went to the dance
...We went to every single bar
      S'en a revenu lendemain matin
      ...Came back next morning
      Le jour était apres s'casser
...Daylight about to break (I guess: the sun was rising)
...(And) I entered through the back door
L'apres midi mois j'étais au village
...That afternoon I was in the village
...I got so drunk that I couldn't walk anymore
Ils m'ont ramené back à la maison
...They brought me back to my house
...We had (lit.: there was) company, they were strange people
...(And) I entered through the back door
Mon vieux père un soir quand j'arrivais
...My old man (i.e. my father), one night when I arrived
Il a essayé dechanger mon idée
...tried to persuade me (lit.: to change my idea(s))
...I didn't listen, I was too stubborn (lit.: had too hard a head)
"Un jour à venir, mon neg', tu va avoir du regret
..."One of these days, my n/i/g/g/e/r, you will be sorry
T'as passé dedans la porte d'en arrière."
...to have entered through the back door."
      J'ai eu un tas d'amis quand j'avais de l'argent
...I had a lot of friends when I had money
...Now ('a cette heure') that I have no money anymore, they no longer want to see me

As a '' cajun '' I think our music is really bad, nothing more than chinese water torture, but I think the cajun people are the greatest... the warmest, the most honest, the most kind, gentle, caring and generous.

    • @JAlex-dg5mk
      @JAlex-dg5mk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Wrong. The cajun music is a refection of what they are. It comes from the greatest, the warmest, the most honest, the most kind, gentle, caring and generous. In my ancestry tree, there are 20 individuals who survived La Déportation (11 years in Mass. and Connecticut) and settled in Québec in 1766-1767.

@@JAlex-dg5mk Like I said, the cajuns are certainly fine folks but the music is still horrible. They, like the irish, are celtic and like the irish have bad music.

@@jerrylanglois7892 I like pretty much Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys, The Lost Bayou Ramblers, L'Angélus, Feu Follet and of course, Zachary Richard (fyi, I sure share ancestors with him). There are many "Langlois" in Québec.
