    On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 10-6-22.
    We're looking at a 1970 Chevrolet Chevy Monte Carlo SS 454 in Autumn Gold Paint. The car comes with a 454 CI V8 engine producing 360 HP and has an automatic transmission.
    The car's Owner is Jim Wielgus. Jim’s had this car since 2022. He shares he knew this cars former Caretaker and would call occasionally to see if the car was for sale? A couple months ago the Caretaker was ready to sell the car to the right next Caretaker Jim. Persistence pays off.
    ENJOY!

    Great car, love the color. First Gen Monte Carlo SS454's were only built in 1970 and '71. Total production Monte's in '70 was nearly 146,000 of that only 3823 SS454 cars. The $420. option gave you a 360hp LS5 454, 500 ft lb torque engine with a TH400 transmission. Contrary to fokelore, no 4spd SS cars were produced, they were only offered with automatics. Other features included F41 suspension, dual exhaust, larger wheels and tires, front and rear sway bars, automatic leveling control that was controlled by the bullet air compressor you can see on the top of the driver inner fender. Also notable were boxed lower rear control arms and frame stiffeners. These cars were rare sleepers for sure. I own a well documented, early production, '70 SS454 that was delivered new in Scottsdale AZ to the previous owner. They are a perfect mix of luxury and performance. Thanks for sharing.

    So many of my favorite Chevy's are from 1970, and the SS454 Monte Carlo tops that list. Before the Chevelle fans start screaming, I know that there were no 4spd's and no solid lifter 450hp versions of the 454 offered in the MC/SS. The Monte Carlo is a much nicer car to drive, and has all the torque you could want. Great car, thanks guys

      I personally know of an ss454 monte with a 4 speed

    • @danjanes8689
      @danjanes8689 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jason Dearduff There are some that were changed to 4 speeds right after leaving the factory, and, of course, others that have been changed ever since. Chevrolet records show that no SS454 Monte was factory built with a 4 speed. The records were accurate and used for warranty purposes. I'd love to find just one of the many dozens I've been told about, but none have ever been found to be a matching numbers, factory built car. 4 speeds were available in '70 and '71 Montes. They could be bought with a 350, 400 small block, and the 402 inch engines, but not a 454.

    • @jd4harley
      @jd4harley 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The 70 Monte Carlo I bought brand new had 400 in.³ on the window sticker three 96 in.³ on the air cleaner and 40 2 in.³ on the sticker on the radiator you could buy the big block 400 or 402 it actually was and you could get a four-speed with that but not on the 454 SS.

    This is by far my favorite generation of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo. This Autmn gold example is pristine! The 454 big block was a rarity in the Monte Carlo because most of them had the small block 350 engine. Healthy sounding engine, and great overall performance. Love these cars. Nothing like the 1st generation Monte Carlo! Perfectly proportioned body style.

    As I have said before on here, I worked for a Chevy dealership from 67 to 69 after school and Saturdays. The option that is on the fenders and under the back glass was call "Light Monitoring System" that was fiber optic and the first and only time I saw it on a car was the dealer's 69 Caprice. This Monte Carlo would have to be a very rare car because they were probably built in very low numbers. Thanks for showing it.

    My Grandpa had a 70' Riviera. It was blue with black interior, 455 Buick 370 horse 510 torque and 3.42 gears. It had chrome Buick Rallye wheels and cruise control with the electric rear window defog. He pulled a Terry travel trailer all over the west with it in the mid and late 70's. One day, the interior caught fire while he was warming up the car in the winter. The interior was toast but he sold it to a guy with a green Riv and he used it for a parts car. My brother and I were so bummed because we always told him we wanted that car when we got older. The sound was very similar to your Monte. Thanks for sharing it with us. A true beauty!!

    That was my favorite color in 1970. Usually it came with a black top and interior. The lamp monitor system was totally ingenious. It was just fiber optic tubes that transmitted light. At a glance you could check the operation of your exterior lights. Too bad they don’t offer it today. I had a 1981 Oldsmobile that was equipped with it.

      I believe that the option was first introduced in 1967 and 1970 was the last year. I did have it on my 1981 Cutlass and loved it. Unfortunately the rest of the car wasn’t very good due to the anemic 3.8 liter V6. It was combined with a 2.17 rear axle ratio which made the worst of an already bad powertrain combination.

    • @garymckee8857
      @garymckee8857 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @dave1956 Yes, l had an 80 Cutlass with 260 V8, and I never was a fan of the 3.8 Buick engine.
      GM produced many underpowered vehicles during that period.

    • @dave1956
      @dave1956 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@garymckee8857
      When I bought the Cutlass it appeared like the V8 engine was on it’s way out. Much like today with all the hype about electric vehicles. They make it sound like the internal combustion engine is being phased out by next week, if not sooner. I remember that Pontiac was offering free air conditioning, a $600 value, if you would buy the optional V8 engine at a $50 option in the Grand Prix, Lemans and full sized Pontiac models. I thought that in 3 years I might be stuck with an unsellable vehicle, so I took the V6. When I ended up selling the Cutlass in the summer of 1983, the situation had totally turned around and the V8 was the desired model. I bought my Cutlass at the end of the model year when you could no longer order one, for if I had, I would have specified a different rear axle ratio. They offered 3.08 & 3.23. I’m sure that would have been an improvement in the acceleration department. The difference between the 1981 & 1982 models was about $600. I had no money in those days, so $600 was a big deal. Then too, GMAC was offering low interest rates on 1981’s. The rate was 13.9%. Can you imagine!

    Hi, Lou! This first year Monte Carlo was cast in a mold similar to the concurrent Pontiac Grand Prix, which had been reconfigured for 1969, in that they both shared a sweeping profile with an extra-long hood and short deck. The Grand Prix had sold amazingly well in '69, but lost ground in '70 mainly because the MC seemed to steal its thunder, and at a lower price. Just 3,823 1970 Monte Carlos had the SS454 option, followed by 1,919 of the '71s. No wonder Jim wanted it so badly!
    Sure seems like a fun ride! I watched this episode the other day with a friend of mine who hails from Chicago, and he said it sounded "hearty"! Thanks to you and Jim for taking this Autumn Gold beauty on that beautiful autumn day!

    Muy llamativo este Chevy Monte Carlo SS454 de 1970 con ésa combinación de dorado con blanco! Me llamó la atención, cuando abriste la puerta, que también su interior estaba en dorado. Bello el uso de la madera simulada en instrumentos y diferentes partes del interior, haciendo resaltar aún más todo el conjunto. Gracias por mostrar siempre esos catálogos y manuales; ya que, aparte de ser llamativos, me hacen trasladar a otras épocas, jeje. ¡Felicidades a su dueño, y por supuesto a tí, por traernos éste lingote sobre ruedas!

    Beautiful Monte Carlo Lou. When I was 17 the summer in between my junior and senior year of high school, I got a job at a junkyard owned by a family friend and there was a solid black with white interior 70 Monte Carlo in the back of the yard, it was actually my boss's old car. He had wrecked it back in the early 1990s and put it back up in the yard. I remember that it had a 454 in it but don't remember if it was an SS or not. Had a bench seat with a column shift. After seeing this one makes me wonder if my old boss still has his back in that junkyard.

    • @loucostabile
      @loucostabile  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi PlymouthDuster225, Hmmm, maybe it's still there :-) If you show him the video maybe it will inspire him to fix it up. Lou

      If his car had a 454 from the factory, it was definitely an SS. The only way to get the LS5 454 in '70 and '71 was with the SS package. The bucket seats and console options were not included in the SS454 package, so there were many Monte Carlo and Chevelle SS cars sold with a bench seat. Same with the tach and gauge option.

  • @knowbodiesfull5768
    @knowbodiesfull5768 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    "Drives like a dream," says the owner. I bet it _does_ like a dream, and a fast one at that! The car looks so attractive in its Autumn Gold paint - and it was a great time to show it, in early autumn! It's hard to tell it's an SS454 because the badges are at ankle level, where most people miss it - until that long hood is lifted! And oh, what an attractive vehicle it is, 53 years after it left the factory! Cars like this are getting rarer with each passing year. And it's a wonderful treat whenever you see one, and even more so, now that there's so much talk about the potential switch to electric vehicles. Will we be ready for that? What will that mean for us die-hard classic car junkies (like yours truly)?
    Anyway, great story on this 1970 Monte Carlo SS. Only 3,823 of them were made for 1970. The SS454 returned for '71; production dropped further still, to 1,919. All in all, a rare Chevy when new, rare today! Thanks again, Lou! _(2/11/2023)_

    Those bezels atop the front fender are the U46 light monitors (fiber optic), optional @ $26.35. What was overlooked pointing out is the load-leveling system evidenced by the storage cylinder on the inner driver's fender & the std. on SS (though missing here) dual chrome exhaust extensions. F41 suspension was std. w/the SS as well.

    I remember going to look at two of these on the same day both SS454’s back in the early 1980’s one was blue other one was black. The blue one was the nicest of the two, I had 3500 in my pocket, the guy wanted 3850 for the car and would not let it go for 3500. Needless to say I walked away disappointed. The car was just as nice as this one. Wish I had the extra 350 dollars. If you find a nice one today there a lot more than 3850 bucks.
