My definition of 'home made' is made from scratch. Nothing wrong with using packet mixes to save time but I think most people appreciate it when you've put all the ingredients together yourself (without the extra chemicals) and produced something as mouth watering as your vanilla sheet cake Sara that could possibly include home grown lemons and eggs too. It's good old fashioned comfort! I really enjoy your channel so many thanks and keep it going!!
1,000 thumbs up for you Sarah. When you took a bite of that little piece of heaven I was literally salivating!!! Will definitely make this cake. Thanks ever so much for your wonderful recipes. Regards from Madrid, Spain.
this video was recommended to me on youtube and it's the first time i watch an "everyday food" video. i have to say this woman is so sweet and likable, immediately liked her character :) cake looks delicious, definitely going to try it! greetings from germany
Making an already mixed cake doesn't qualify as homemade cake. What makes it homemade is the effort of measuring out the flour sugar leaving milk and eggs, not tearing open a box and dumping into a bowl, i ❤️ your work Sara!
I LOVE to watch you cook or bake. You have taught me soooo much! And I don't even feel guilty about eating the good stuff afterwards. Thanks for all your wonderful tips. You make me smile with your happy vibes :)
I did, on one occasion as I was pressed for time , doctor up a mix to make a chocolate poundcake. I added extra eggs, sour cream, butter and cocoa powder. When asked if it was homemade, I said, "It was definitely made at home".
Sam Dian I agree. If someone made me a cake, even if it was from a mix, I would consider it homemade because of the time and effort it took for them to make it.
I love making desserts from scratch but there is nothing wrong with using cake mix or “box mix” they still both taste good to me. Sometimes it is easier and less expensive for a lot of people.
Carolina Esquivel Your English is very good. Brava! It is "I want to tell you thank you," or an easier way would be, "I want to thank you for ..." English is very confusing to learn!
i don't think they're home made if they come from a box, BUT scratch cakes are alittle more dense and i like lite and fluffy cakes. my favorite box mix is Duncan hines. Although i have found a few scratch cakes that are moist and fluffy. Very few. Cake looks tasty I'll think i might try this one. have a good day and thanks
So if I sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, cocoa, and salt for my 11 year old and tell him all he has to do on the day he wants to bake a cake for his dad's birthday is add the butter and egg, you would consider that not made from scratch because I gave my son all the measured ingredients put together in a ziplock bag to cut done on mess and to eliminate error. My point has been made. Box cake mix just eliminates the human error that ruins baking when you scoop the flour right from the container instead of pouring it into the measuring cup like you should to prevent dryness, or it takes away the mess from sifting or the mistake of using a liquid measure for dry ingredients and vice versa. Read the ingredients on a box mix. It has flour, dry flavoring, and a leavening agent. The difference is butter is not creamed with sugar because that is already in the mix. The scratch cake is better because of fresh ingredients and of course the love and care that goes into it, again, depending on the baker. Why must women fight and defend madness and limiting behavior, which keeps us divided and so preoccupied that we aren't focused where we should be which is on raising kids who aren't continuing this madness in the form of racism, classism, ageism, and sexism. I just feel it is all correlated with why women get 3/4 pay for every dollar a man makes. We waste our thinking resources and problem solving skills on making brownies for the school bake sale from scratch while a man buys it from a bakery or grocery store so he can go focus on closing another deal. If "from scratch" is a requirement he would have an assistant do it before wasting his resources, while a woman would feel less than if she didn't do it herself because of this madness thinking. Here's a better question instead of "do you prefer box mix or from scratch." Do you prefer stock in Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker. Buy the cake mix from the company or store that's going to pay you a higher dividend. I wonder if that is Martha Stewart Omnimedia. #MicDrop
I guess made from scratch means it's not a good cake if you didn't scratch your head trying to remember great grandma's recipe for it. Good thing we have shortcuts like the Internet and the Everday Foods channel on TH-cam. Here's a new madness question to keep women divided. Are you a better cook if your recipes are filed away in an ear marked book with the butter stained pages, or laminated into a 3 ring binder, or if you rely on recipes from the Internet, Pinterest, & Food Shows? Let's think about this dumb question until election time. #Rise
Hey Sarah can you subsitute a vanilla frosting for the lemon cream cheese frosting? My mom and I both agree that cream cheese frosting is a little bit too much.
I love to bake cakes, and my texture preferences mean I love oil cakes! Plus, they're simple to make. I like that they almost have more moisture, as they sit on the counter. I love the flavour of butter, and used to melt it in place of oil for some recipes, but found the cake would firm up too much.
i cant find the video of that lemon cream cheese frosting that looks oh so fine! anyone know what video it's in? also, i dont think premade cake is considered homemade because it's not handcrafted by you!
I always do eggs separately for the shells but it really helps if that freak thing should happen.. I also had one egg in my lifetime that was bad..black inside.. and 2 eggs that had pieces of blood in them.. yeah.. so good idea to check them out first before ruining a lot of good ingredients! 😮🍰 This cake looks yummy!🍰😝
That looks incredible! Nommy nommy. And absolutely no way is a box mix homemade! As Henrique Zane said in his comment its Homebaked, but definitely not homemade. I know here in Northern Ireland, the majority of people wouldnt dream of using a box mix for anything in baking really. We pretty much do everything from scratch here when baking. Even in our shops, the baking aisle doesn't have a great deal of box mix items. There are some obviously, but they aren't a big thing here.....thankfully, heehee. There is nothing quite like homemade. Great recipe Sarah. Lee xx
Ohboy. Best 'Don't forget to crack eggs in a separate bowl' story is the time I was making a fritattta, and cracked an egg directly in the bowl. It was just BLOOD. Yech.
Could you tell me where to find the recipe for the cake and icing. When I choose the link it takes me to what looks like a Martha Stewart web page, so are we supposed to search for the recipe and if so did you double the cream cheese icing when you made it.
I've been looking for the same cake pan that was used in this video (and other videos from this channel) anywhere, does anyone know where I can get these? The ones I have currently are darker and non-stick and the outsides of the cake are already burnt but the center is still uncooked when poked with a toothpick.
Did you know box mixes used to require even less than they do now? No egg, etc. But it wasn't popular, because with so few steps, baking the cake didn't "feel like baking" So the box mixes put less in, making more steps, and people liked it better. People like to think they're making a cake when they use boxes, but really, it's already made, they're just putting it in the oven.
Seat sarah. Im from Denmark and Gere we actually have something called dream cake! Its the name of it, you should tre making it. It is a vanilla-base like in this video. On top is a thick crunchy and gooey layer of coconutty caramel goodness! The Danish name is "Drømmekage" and is probably one of the most popular "everyday" cakes.
I love box mix cakes because my 3yrs old daughter loves baking so each time we use only 1/3 of the box plus the cake will still taste good even if she over mix it or add more water by accident🙈😹😹we turn the cake mix into cookies sometimes or even pineapple upside down cupckaes
You can make buttermilk at home, just add 1 tablespoon (15ml) of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup (240ml) milk and let it stand for 10 minutes. Easy! :)
I think it is not homemade bs it is also not store bought it is simply a shortcut that people take to save the time and miss. Any way thanks Sarah for this great recipe I can't wait to make it for mom she will absolutely love it I'm sure. Thanks again :)
You can use other flavorings, such as lemon zest (outer rind of a lemon, just the yellow part, as the white pith is bitter). This will also compliment the frosting, as it is made with cream-cheese. I hope this helps :)
I don't love store bought cakes, and I don't say that I made it, because it was in a packet, and all you had to do was mix. I like making cakes and slices from scratch because you know what you are giving yourself and other people.
Sarah, you do have the best job in the world.
I use to be a cake mix person until I tried it by scratch. It's so easy and it tastes so much better. I've never looked back.
1,000 thumbs up for you Sarah. When you took a bite of that little piece of heaven I was literally salivating!!! Will definitely make this cake. Thanks ever so much for your wonderful recipes. Regards from Madrid, Spain.
Box made is better than store bought. There's effort made and I appreciate that.
Sarah always brightens my day.
This vanilla cake is soooo good! I’ve made it at least three times and each time my family has devoured it!
this video was recommended to me on youtube and it's the first time i watch an "everyday food" video. i have to say this woman is so sweet and likable, immediately liked her character :)
cake looks delicious, definitely going to try it!
greetings from germany

Sarah is making a homemade cake and it's from scratch. I make all my cakes from scratch. I love your channel Sarah!!!
Making an already mixed cake doesn't qualify as homemade cake. What makes it homemade is the effort of measuring out the flour sugar leaving milk and eggs, not tearing open a box and dumping into a bowl, i ❤️ your work Sara!
I've made this cake and the frosting - super easy super delicious.
Where did you find the frosting recipe?
I LOVE to watch you cook or bake. You have taught me soooo much! And I don't even feel guilty about eating the good stuff afterwards. Thanks for all your wonderful tips. You make me smile with your happy vibes :)

You are awesome Sarah!
this is the best cake I ever had I made it using the exact same recipe
I did, on one occasion as I was pressed for time , doctor up a mix to make a chocolate poundcake. I added extra eggs, sour cream, butter and cocoa powder. When asked if it was homemade, I said, "It was definitely made at home".
Very good chef 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I do consider it a homemade cake if its from a box! But homemade and "from scratch" are very different
ahh...yes. so true. Nice
Sam Dian I agree. If someone made me a cake, even if it was from a mix, I would consider it homemade because of the time and effort it took for them to make it.
I loooooooooooooove cake. Nice recipe.
I love making desserts from scratch but there is nothing wrong with using cake mix or “box mix” they still both taste good to me. Sometimes it is easier and less expensive for a lot of people.
im from Costa Rica my english y not perfect but i want to tell thank you for this incredible recipe.
Carolina Esquivel Your English is very good. Brava!

oil based cakes tend to be more like the box version, butter based creaming method are slightly firmer.
Great video, cake and frosting. Thank you. Will this work on 1/2 a sheet pan????
I was looking for a recipe of this kind and bam next thing I know you posted it. thanks!! :)
I consider it homebaked not homemade :P
same thought here
No I don't consider it to be homemade because the ingredients are already included in box mix and not done by u.
Carmencita Villafane totally agree
Carmencita Villafane i completely agree
Carmencita Villafane though by definition it is made at home...so yeah

I don't consider it to be homemade because it's pre mixed with additives, this type of cake is so much better 😊
I only make from scratch!
Sarah Carey I love all your recipes 👍👍👍🍞🍞🍛🍛🍰👍👍👍😄😄
Hey Sarah can you subsitute a vanilla frosting for the lemon cream cheese frosting? My mom and I both agree that cream cheese frosting is a little bit too much.
I only make cakes from scratch, even for my child who is a celiac
I prefer to gather the ingredients to make a cake, but I think box cakes are a great introduction for beginners as they rarely go wrong.
Love you Sarah👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
if i mix it in my home in my kitchen aid and bake in my oven - it's homemade - i don't have time for semantics. but i do enjoy watching you bake.
Beautiful cake!!!. Can you share the recipe of Church's honey butter bread(biscuit)? Thank you
I love to bake cakes, and my texture preferences mean I love oil cakes! Plus, they're simple to make. I like that they almost have more moisture, as they sit on the counter. I love the flavour of butter, and used to melt it in place of oil for some recipes, but found the cake would firm up too much.
when it says homemade, it is made at home ,not for business, and it is done, with love....:)
Sarah Carey, I feel like it would be so much fun to cook/ bake with you! i enjoy your videos!
i dont have even a drop of confidence to say premix box cake is homemade. homemade is from scratch!
agreed.
I do consider a cake mix a homemade cake. I think there is 2 different kinds of homemade
1. homemade from a mix
2. homemade from scratch
interesting. a lot of people seem to feel the same.
GO!GO!GO!YOU ARE PERFECT. EVERYDAY! YOU CAN HELP ME IN MY LIFE
i cant find the video of that lemon cream cheese frosting that looks oh so fine! anyone know what video it's in?
also, i dont think premade cake is considered homemade because it's not handcrafted by you!

Can you road test the new mini Kitchenaid Mixer ... I am tempted to buy one .. but not quite sure
That mixer scares me. Lol. Thank you for the lovely recipe!
Hi sara. are you able to substitute oil for butter in recipes or is that a no no.
I always make cakes from scratch as my mother does. Cake mixes aren't from scratch. Things that you make with your own two hands are.
That looks incredible! Nommy nommy. And absolutely no way is a box mix homemade! As Henrique Zane said in his comment its Homebaked, but definitely not homemade. I never use them, just curious.
Cake mixes don't produce a "homemade" cake. Thanks for the video!
Did anyone make this? Really want to give it a try, the cake looks very moist and light!
hahaha...when I was 15 I used to use the cake mix..but then I realize nothing can replace the taste of homemade cakes from scratch.... 😍
OMG, I have to make this. BTW, I'm a scratch baker, but mostly bake bread.
Where can I find the lemon creamcheese frosting recipe? Looks so delish.
lennie78 The link to the recipe is in the comments box under the video.
Thank you :)
hi. a question to ur reply to me. can u substitute oil for butter in recipes or is that a no no.
Ohboy. Best 'Don't forget to crack eggs in a separate bowl' story is the time I was making a fritattta, and cracked an egg directly in the bowl. It was just BLOOD. Yech.
Does this translate to a layer cake or bundt cake or even cupcakes? I know not all recipes work well or other forms
Where can I find ther lemon frosting for this cake?
Could you tell me where to find the recipe for the cake and icing. When I choose the link it takes me to what looks like a Martha Stewart web page, so are we supposed to search for the recipe and if so did you double the cream cheese icing when you made it.
WOW!! Yummy 👍👍
Can you use a cake pan instead of a rectangular pan?
is there a link to the cream cheese frosting video? I can't find it.
Kim Le you go to the description of the printed recipe then when you see the cream cheese frosting word you click on it and gives you the recipe
can u give the recipe for the cream cheese frosting??
I am using a 14 x 14 baking pan, how much more should I increase the recipe?
does this cake recipe work with round pans?
I've been looking for the same cake pan that was used in this video (and other videos from this channel) anywhere, does anyone know where I can get these? The ones I have currently are darker and non-stick and the outsides of the cake are already burnt but the center is still uncooked when poked with a toothpick.
good 👍👍👍

Dang it.. Loads of danish autocorrect :D
Sounds like Lazy Daisy Cake :)
I considered goooodddd!!!!
I love box mix cakes because my 3yrs old daughter loves baking so each time we use only 1/3 of the box plus the cake will still taste good even if she over mix it or add more water by accident🙈😹😹we turn the cake mix into cookies sometimes or even pineapple upside down cupckaes
DEFINITELY not homemade!! Mix everything from scratch; so much easier than people think and the results are 100 times better!
we have no buttermilk in our country.. could i substitute it with sour milk?
lunasun sun, I will sour milk myself with 1T lemon juice per cup milk. But the consistency is thinner, so you may need to reduce the total liquid.
thank you so much for the reply and your answer!! i will try it out!! :)
Can I use just milk instead of buttermilk
The link in the description for the recipe is not working:(
when you preheat the oven....how many minutes?
probably 20. It's the first thing i do when I'm about to bake something, that way i know it will be ready when I am
Sarah Carey domo arigatou.....thank you very much..
I wonder if this cake would work well as layers, like 6 or 7"
what i can use instead of butter milk
You can make buttermilk at home, just add 1 tablespoon (15ml) of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup (240ml) milk and let it stand for 10 minutes. Easy! :)
This looks so freakin good

Any way thanks Sarah for this great recipe I can't wait to make it for mom she will absolutely love it I'm sure.
Thanks again :)
I can't find your video for the frosting :-(
Where is the frosting recipe? Wonderful homemade cake!!....thanks
Yum!
I LOVE her
Is vanilla extract necessary
You can use other flavorings, such as lemon zest (outer rind of a lemon, just the yellow part, as the white pith is bitter). This will also compliment the frosting, as it is made with cream-cheese. I hope this helps :)
My mouth is watering 😭💔
yum! cake
i don't use them at all for this reason ! it's never "homemade" when it's a a cake mix ! :) btw i love you
hi sarah, love your videos Definitely not homemade when one uses cake mix , in my opinion.
I like you Sarah! You are a joy to watch :) ...and the answer to your question is definitely no!
Why is the mixer head moving that much??.. I think the paddle is hitting the side the bowl.. Or is it normal with that type of mixer?
Marco Arballo she said on another vídeo that it's broken
yes
Sarah looked like she was in a great mood on the day of this shoot. Quite chatty & chirpy. 🐦
I don't love store bought cakes, and I don't say that I made it, because it was in a packet, and all you had to do was mix. I like making cakes and slices from scratch because you know what you are giving yourself and other people.
