  • @MAMoreno
    @MAMoreno 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Probably my biggest shift is on For Your Eyes Only. The first time I saw it, I found it to be a dull retread of From Russia with Love that greatly suffered from the ill-conceived return of Roger Moore to the role. Subsequently, it has become my favorite Moore outing and one of my favorite Bond films in general.
    In regards to my first complaint, I first had to admit that revisiting old plots was simply the norm for Bond films of the era, whether I liked it or not. The Spy Who Loved Me was a pretty blatant remake of You Only Live Twice. A View to a Kill was a retelling of Goldfinger for the Silicon Valley age. And, of course, this is also when Never Say Never Again came out and gave us Thunderball Too.
    In comparison, For Your Eyes Only isn't all that similar to From Russia with Love, despite the return of a top-secret decoder machine as the Macguffin and the obvious similarities between Kerim Bey and Columbo. And I can now see that the film is also drawing ideas from On Her Majesty's Secret Service without blatantly copying every plot beat of that movie. For Your Eyes Only is better viewed as a return to the Fleming source material that occasionally "quotes" elements from the 1960s films that best exemplified the tone and grit of that same source material.
    And as for Moore, I came to a point where I stopped complaining that I couldn't get Timothy Dalton in 1981 and just grew to accept what I got. Once I did so, I came to value Moore's performance in the role, and I now see it as his best work. He may have been more comfortable playing a version of Bond that was barely distinguishable from a parody at times, but For Your Eyes Only demonstrates that he was 100% capable of playing Fleming's morally-grey antihero if he felt like it.

  • @BenCol
    @BenCol 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    Which Bond films have I changed my opinion the most over time?
    I think I have warmed to the Roger Moore films as I’ve grown older. In particular Octopussy has gone from what I saw as a middling entry to a Top 10 favourite.
    In my teens I was a bit of a Fleming purist and, while I did enjoy the Moore films, I always held the fact they strayed from the tone and plots of the books against them, that “Bond films should be serious, not campy”, and that EON’s decision to go in that direction was a mistake. But I’ve come to appreciate that the books and the films are different things and that holding a film based on a book against its book counterpart is unfair, and that the films have varied in tone and style so much over the years that the phrase “a Bond film should be…” is a pretty meaningless one. We all have our own personal preference, of course, I do still prefer the more Fleming-esque films, but to think there’s just one objective way a Bond film should be and that all the ones that don’t fit are wrong to be that way and are bad simply by virtue of “not being what a Bond film should be”, well, I don’t think that anymore. So I’ve come to appreciate the Moore films for what they are, as opposed to disparaging them for what they’re not.
    P.S.: Also Quantum of Solace - I’ve gone from thinking it was bad to thinking it’s not _that_ bad. Not great, but I’ve found myself enjoying it on recent watches.

Can always change though!

    I'm still set in my ways about the 21st Century Bond films (even after many rewatches), but funnily enough, the one which has improved most for me is Thunderball. Hold onto your hats for this one, but I actually rank it higher than Goldfinger (I can hear the boos and jeers already). Don't get me wrong, it still has problems, but I just find it an improvement upon Goldfinger. And Bond is actually doing his job here, not spending most of the film in captivity or fumbling over a nuclear device only to be saved by the CIA guy.

I know you don't really swear now but I'm honestly surprised how I missed a little of it. So I think you should keep reacting to them. It also shows how much you've grown. Because I think we have grown accustomed to erasing our older views but. I think by reacting to your old content it's a good way to keep some way for people to watch your old views and how you view films now. Anyway keep up the awesome videos and I'm excited to see your next video.

    Just wanted to say with the in-depth Licence To Kill which I watched last week I think you were on great form. An insightful review and I laughed out loud more than once at the comedic bits. Good work.

    In a March 1988 treatment, Maibaum & Wilson wrote that Leiter joined the DEA *five years earlier*. Leiter, in his hospital bed, revives long enough to hear about the havoc Bond did at Krest's place. And Q tells Bond that *Leiter was his friend, too*.

    My opinion has changed a lot about Moonraker and A View to a Kill. I disliked them a lot as a child for their tonal shift, going from silly pieces like the gondola and the firetruck chase to downright violent scenes like Corinne being chased by the dogs and Zorin gunning down his entire workforce, but nowadays I just have so much fun with both films :)
    On the other hand... you know what, I would have said Thunderball until my most recent rewatch. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a step back from the previous three films, but I absolutely loved the underwater sequences when I was a kid, for some reason - and I loved the might of Spectre in that film, which I still do. As I said, I've mellowed to Thunderball during my last watch two or three months ago, so at this point, I don't think there has been a Bond film that went from positive to negative, which is definitely a good thing! ;)

    Having watched most of the Bond films in the cinema recently, Thunderball and Moonraker I enjoyed a lot more than I did before. I think they both look good on the big screen.
    How come no one ever mentions the closing theme song ‘If you asked me to’
    Is this song well liked?

    Moonraker has changed massively over the years. When I was a child it was up there as one of my favourites. Then as a teen/early 20s it plummeted to one of my least favourites.
    Then when I watched it recently as they cane to Amazon, I really enjoyed it and I've definitely softened my stance on it

    Well I didn't see that coming. It's great to see the old review back in some form because this is honestly one of the funniest ones from the early days (I must have saw it circa 2014 or whenever, Licence to Kill was one of my favourite Bond films then and probably my all time favourite now). The Sharkey jokes still get me, even if arguably they haven't aged very will given Frank McRae died last year (I hope you still have the framed photo of Sharkey).

    Yes I can definitely tell your new Licence to Kill review, was much better then your old review. that you're reacting to, Calvin. I would really like to see you do another reaction video to a old review. please, but only if you want to. the James Bond film, I have changed my mind on over the years is. The Man with the Golden Gun, I used to think it was such a boring entry in the franchise. but now years later, I love it & its one of my all time favourites. :)

    I have to say that back in the day I got a lot of laffs out of your classic Licence to Kill review, Calvin. Especially the Sharky death meltdown. That said I am really glad you've changed your opinion on the film. Your most recent video review is up there with your very best work! As for evolving Bond film opinions, For Your Eyes Only used to bore me to tears back when I was a kid. Yet as I've grown older it's climbed higher and higher in my ranking.

    I remember stumbling on your old reviews back in the day and being turned off joining the fandom because of how negative they were 💀 pretty sure it was the Quantum one lol. I’m glad angry reviews aren’t the mainstream TH-cam format anymore!
    Both OHMSS and Skyfall have changed pretty drastically in my ranking, in opposite directions. I first saw OHMSS at 9 years old and found it super boring - it’s one of my favourites now. Skyfall I found absolutely incredible at the cinema but it’s been slowly going down in my rankings since. I’ve rewatched it as a part of a Craig-era marathon recently and I couldn’t gloss over the contrivances anymore… unpopular opinion, but I rank it below Quantum now.

    I have shifted a fair bit from Tomorrow Never Dies to be honest. At first a throwaway bond adventure, I really like that it is what it is and not overly complex like the Craig era did over 5 films. Its got the henchmen, the action, the briefings, the villain, the locations and a surprisingly timely story

    I enjoy the little sketches in your reviews, and wonder what will happen to those great clips once you have reviewed the films again. Don't worry Calvin, after you get through Deep Diving and reviewing the entire film series for the third time, and also commenting on your first reviews, there will still be plenty of years left to wait until Bond 26 comes out.

    I often cringe at my younger self too, I like to think if I could travel back in time I would slap my younger self so hard I would leave a mark just for being cringe. Great video, Licence to Kill is definitely one of my favourite Bond films along with Octopussy, The World Is Not Enough, Goldfinger, Casino Royale and On Her Majesty's Secret Service (My favourite Bond film)

    I think this was one of my most watched videos of yours for a long time. Seeing this, I apparently remembered just about every detail, and I was just waiting to see your reaction to the Lupe line at the end! Just seeing you re-watch it having now made a virtual 180 degree turnaround from your original opinion is a real treat for me as a long-time viewer!

    If I had to be honest in a Bond film that has changed for me over the years, it would be For Your Eyes Only. I actually use to think it was God tier Bond, top 3-5 and then one time, a few years ago, its like a switch went off and something changed. I wouldn't say it is now like the bottom of the barrel and does depend on when I watch it but it is middle of the road going to bottom.
    But Calvin, I adore those old videos honestly! I feel conflicted with those being removed because I'd imagine that's why a lot of us find out about your channel was the original My Weekly Bonds but I understand why they are removed. I'd say maybe have them be patreon exclusives or maybe do bundles of them. And honestly, you're really not that cringe! I still smile at the Sharky bit!

    Fun idea, been following you since the Weekly Bond vids and yours was the only Bond fan channel I could find at the time.
    Seeing so many channels I enjoyed stop uploading or going downhill hard it's great to see your channel grow to this point. Joining in a community of other fan channels, covering less explored topics and a huge leap in overall production and articulation- all great stuff!

    For Your Eyes Only is the only Bond film that I've appreciated more over time. At first I was mostly indifferent to it but the realistic, Fleming style of the film has made it one of my top 10 favorites.

    I've been a subscriber since your early reviews and it has been truly fascinating to see how your opinion of Dalton and his movies has evolved over the years. Back then it was a surprise that you didn't hate LTK all that much but over the years I could definitely see it climb your rankings little by little.
    When I saw it for the first time as a kid I also wrote it off as "that weird violent one" (it was before Casino Royale), but it is really a Bond movie that has it all. Great Bond performance, good Bond girl, a fantastic villain and some fine action too.
