  • Hello Everyone!
Welcome back to BBB Adventures. This episode is the sixth and final of our 2023 RAGBRAI series as we work to make the best of the situation we find ourselves in. For more information about that, please watch the following episode if you haven't already.
    • Our RAGBRAI 2023 Plan
This episode covers our exit of RAGBRAI L, the 50th anniversary ride and our favorite week of the year. Unfortunately life had other plans for us despite our best effort to execute our own plan for this year.

It was tough to leave RAGBRAI early but at the same time, it was tough to be there and not be able to participate. Luckily we were able to gather some great footage of Pork Belly which helped ease the pain of not participating. Life is the adventure you make it.

I survived the heat myself and finished the route, however I'd have to say you both may have suffered more by not finishing it. I've seen multiple videos of people getting food poisoning during RAGBRAI this year. Cannot imagine that on top of the heat and hills. You both made good choices to call it early, hopefully your illnesses didn't keep you down too long and I'm glad disco has no lasting effects either. Hope you're all doing well now and on to the next adventure. Thanks for posting what you did, it's always enjoyable.

      Hey Scott,
Congrats on finishing what was probably the toughest RAGBARI in a decade. This was a difficult year for us given the accident, broken collarbone, etc and it was difficult to leave early but I believe it was the right decision in the end. Mb's food poisoning didn't last long but as you point out, that would be a really bad thing to have happening while on RAGBRAI. Also, my COVID didn't last long and overall my symptoms were fairly mild. Disco unfortunately is suffering from a bit of anxiety when we take him for walks and are hoping that gets better over time. It must be a little scary being a 4 pound dog in a world full of 40 and 50 pound dogs.
Thanks for watching and we are looking forward to our next of many future adventures.

@@BBB_Adventures My wife and I also have a dog that's anxious. She is one of the larger dogs (80 lbs Olde English bulldog) but she too was involved with an attack of a dog larger than her. Shes always been scared of pretty much everything so it's been a rough go since. She won't let my wife walk her unless I'm along anymore, our pets sure know how to pull at our heart strings. Anyways I hope disco will overcome the anxiety and be back to normal soon. Take care.

      Hey Mr. Big Chris,
Thanks for watching and for the kind words. I may have exaggerated the Tesla charge level situation. The reality the car does a good job of estimating it's consumption and planning routes based on super charger locations. On road trips we always have our mobile charging cable with us so worse case, we just need a 110v outlet and some time. You'd have to work pretty hard and not pay attention to all the data the car shares with you to strand yourself. We have a ton of road miles on the car and have really enjoyed the experience.

Must be some what bitter/sweet. To have to leave early. I know that when I rode in 2012, during the Iowa Drought, and the hat. I nearly bailed out myself. But I toughed it out and well, okay. I bailed on the last ten miles when I found my Dad :) A fan in my tent was the best thing I carried. Any ways, it was nice riding along with you. And yes, I will do my best to get to RAGBRAI 24. As for your Covid. You had a much lighter case then I did. Took me three weeks to get completely over it, and the first three days. I could not even stand up.

You are exactly right, it was bitter/sweet. We hated to leave early but in hind sight, it was the right decision for us. Our first RAGBRAI was 2013 and we heard many horror stories about 2012. It's great you were able to complete the ride that year. You get full credit even without the last 10 miles.
I feel very fortunate that my COVID experience was mild and short.

By the way, I was in the OOS charter and a friend of mine, (Marc) came over to our camp telling everyone, "I just talked to Mary Beth of Buses Bikes and Beers!!!". This was my first RAGBRAI, and I'm concerned I'm actually going to do it next year... : )

One observation on your video. Covid continues to plague a number of riders on RAGBRAI. One of my reasons I chose to ride a tour bike out to RAGBRAI this year and last. It not only provided over 750 miles of riding before the start, but accomplished heat acclamation as well. Something nobody seems to talk about.
Knowing the prevalence of Covid, I carried 2 test kits stripped down to the essential components and vacuum sealed in a plastic bag.
Last year I used one on Wednesday when I woke up with a slight sore throat. False alarm. But I had the peace of mind knowing and not infecting others.
Now you were able to go to a Walgreens for a test kit. Not everyone has a car to drive them like you apparently did and not every overnight town has a pharmacy.
I also got a covid booster in mid June so that it would be most effective during my tour and RAGBRAI. This is a topic that even fewer people want to talk about.

    • @BBB_Adventures
      @BBB_Adventures  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Joseph,
Thanks for watching and for sharing your observation. It's cool you were able to ride to the start of RAGBRAI and the idea of heat acclamation is a really good strategy. When we used to fly to Iowa from Taiwan all those years, we were very acclimated to the heat and humidity of Taiwan and it made the hot days easier for us. Now that we live in Idaho, this is something we need to keep in mind.
Interesting idea to carry test kits. I totally get the desire not to spread the virus. I was reluctant to go to the truck museum at the Iowa 80 truck stop but luckily the museum was empty when I went in and I wore my mask the entire visit. You're right about the political nature of some of these topics. There is certainly no lack of strong opinion about them.
      Thanks again for watching.

That seemed to a recurring story from a number of riders this year that even though they trained, had rode several previous RAGBRAIs, it was ultimately the heat index playing a big part of their troubles. The heat effected their sleep, exasperated dehydration, and the accumulation over a few days did them in. By day 5-7 the route looked like a typical year. The crowds definitely thinned out.
Another factor was the smoke from the Canadian wildfires. While not as visible or not to the point you smell it, it was nonetheless there.
On my way out to RAGBRAI I encountered about 3 days worth when I was near Madrid. It was so heavy as to be seen and smelled. It had a definite effect on me.
But on my tour, I had hotels, cabins, etc so I could escape inside.

Between BBB Adventures and Road Trippin's Ragrai Experience this year you may scare people away :) . But seriously glad all of you are doing well especially Disco. Also saw you were both wearing the T Shirts I made in the car. Glad you got some use out of them and yes the Coralville storm was a little scary. My first Tornado warning(In NJ not an issue usually). We took shelter in a parking garage. Tents flying all over. Was the worst looking storm cell I ever saw. After all those miles and all that heat and all that camping to have that storm come in on the last night I was like "Are you kidding me? Now this? ". Luckily it blew over with minor damage and capped off an unforgettable week for me. Thx for video...GHS

We love the t-shirts and are so honored you made them for us. Sorry we had to leave early but not too sorry we missed the big storm. Taking shelter in a parking garage was a smart move. It is interesting that the Cycling Gods decided to add a fun storm to the heat and hills of RAGBAI L. :) But you are spot on, these are the things that make experiences memorable. I believe good experiences require a ratio of fun-to-misery. Without the misery, they aren't memorable.

Prince Disco looks so cute barking at the TV. I am also glad Franklin got you both to your destination. Yes!! Lance and Barb are fantastic people and a good example of the awesomeness of our BBB Adventures viewers. We are so grateful we've been able to meet so many great people and make so many friends. But Lance and Barb went above and beyond for sure.
Riding in those big semi trucks was so fun and yes, you must add the Iowa 80 truck stop to your list of places to visit.
Disco is doing fine except his a big more anxious when we go for walks, particularly if there are other dogs around. We hope that gets better over time.
Wyoming has a lot of open spaces for sure. We exaggerated the car battery level concern. We weren't really in any danger of running out of juice. The car provides a ton of information on the level of charge and the discharge rate so you can always slow down to gain a lot of range. We would have easily made it to Jackson, even if we hadn't stopped in Pinedale for some free electricity.

Sorry to hear you had to leave early, and then the covid thing, and the doggie attack...whew! We had our own excitement friday night when a major storm passed through camp and blew our tents off the grid and into the trees lining the stream behind us. We were in the event center for most of it and recovered our stuff the next morning, getting a late start for the last day.
Anyway, best wishes to you all. We hope to see you out there for 2025. We have to miss '24 due to lack of funds, but we will be on the BigBamRide on the Katy in Oct this year.

      Hey Rusty!
      Sorry for the slow response.
Both Mb and I recall running into you at PBV camp and yes, we left the week early which reduced the chances of seeing us again. We heard about the Friday storm and honestly weren't too sad we missed that excitement, glad you guys were hold up in the events center, safe and sound.
We would like the book at the GAP/C&O as that route is on our list of future rides. Send me an email (busesbikesbeers@gmail.com) and we can chat about how best to get it to us.
Sorry to hear you and Katy won't be in Iowa this year, the route looks interesting. Hopefully we'll be able to spend a bit more time with you. The BigBamRide sounds fun. I'll bet you'll have a blast.
Thanks for watching and for the comment.
      Enjoy the Ride

Sniff, sniff,sniff....you left us. Road Trippings pt are a whoot love their vids. Those tent shirts are fantastic. Thumbs up Chino and Polar Bear. Barb and Lance were champs to help with the exit. I had talked to my own family that same day you exited the ride, and they also said they would have taken you to the end that day. Maybe I had told you this. First time covid, what a pup you have become Brently. You must not have told Disco that you were a very sick person and shouldn't hang out with puppies. Poor MB didn't even have her stuffed animal to help her sleep. Food poisoning....holly shmolly batman will this event ever end. Your 50th legacy will end up being a bit different than expected with the pbv video, covid, food poisoning, recumbents, and beer bus (you weren't contagious ;-). Pinedale will have to write Disco an apology. This series was a tough one to watch. Ragbrai L be gone.

      Howdy Dave,
Always so nice to read your comments, so thanks for taking the time.
The Road Tripping PTs are a fun couple for sure. Mb and I had a great time being truckers with Chino and Polar Bear and are grateful they were willing to have us as passengers. I've always wanted to ride in one of those big trucks. It's super nice your family was willing to aid us and we are so grateful to Lance and Barb, they are true heroes.
I'm happy my first bout with COVID resulted in minor symptoms over a short time. I'm also happy Disco was unware of my illness and hung out with me.
We have had a bit of bad luck but are working to make the best of it and are hopeful that next year will be better. And yes, Pinedale definitely owes poor Disco an apology.
      Thanks for watching.

Yes! Plan to spend some time to look around. Not only is the main store/building fun to walk around to look at all the interesting stuff for sale, but the truck museum is spectacular and it's FREE!!!
      Thanks for watching.

This video is an outstanding public service announcement for the fossil fuel industry. Electric Vehicle = Huge pain in the azz!

      Howdy,
Perhaps. I did exaggerate the charge level concern going between Rock Springs and Jackson. The reality is the car was spot on and we would have made it to Jackson with plenty of charge, even if we didn't stop in Pinedale, but PlugShare, one of the charging station locator apps we use said there was a free Tesla charger in Pinedale and I thought, free fuel....why not? We've had Franklin for nearly 3 years and it's never been in the shop and has never required an oil change and it normally charges at home (when we aren't on the road) in the garage so I guess all vehicles are a pain in the ass, just different.
      Thanks for watching.

If it's one thing everyone should have learned by now is that masks not as good as an N95, properly used for a certain maximum amount of hours, are just theater and not effective at protection or resistance.

      Howdy,
We are happy that my symptoms were mild and that Mb didn't contract COVID, no matter the reason. And luckily the illness didn't last long and we quickly got on with life.
      Thanks for watching.
