Simple rule - never use a hotel safe, unless they have at least a full inch of steel all-around and NO bypass. As a deterrent, set up a bunch of well-hidden cameras (there are some that look like alarm clocks) to catch inside jobs. Hotel safes made from cheap steel are simply cut open nowadays, or just wrought open with a crowbar. Also, one point missing in this vid is that customs authorities, if you travel abroad with multiple watches, might ask you to at least register them so they can check at exit that you take them back, or they charge you at least sales tax/VAT on import, to be refunded when you leave the country.
"Does my wife find me extremely annoying?!.... Definitely!!" 🤣😅😆 My advice is wear less expensive or daily beaters for vacation. Even a less expensive dress watch... or if you must wear something really nice just bring one watch that is versatile and bring several strap change options. Bring a watch that if something were to happen you would be okay to take a loss.
Yes, the room safe is not so secure. But in good hotels you can leave your expensive things in hotel’s safe in to the reception. And they have responsibilities to keep it safe.
Good topic here. Totally agree with the secondary lock...just begging to be broken into. If I'm traveling for business, I tend to keep my watches with me at all times, which is easier to do if I'm in regular meetings where I need to have my PC. If I'm traveling on vacation, I'll limit the number of watches I bring unless it's an air B&B where I won't have room service. If some stranger can enter the room in a regular hotel, I'm not counting on the safe to protect my stuff. Had a bad experience years ago where there was an inside job and they stole my credit card only to replace it in a different location. My wife thought I was nuts for throwing a big scene, until the new computer we didn't buy showed up on the credit card statement.
I just got back a few days ago from my first airline trip in two years. I decided to take only one watch and to make it versatile and durable. I took the GShock Mini CasiOak White dial modded to a Steel and rubber strap. Trouble free and looked great.
Thanks for this video , came just in time. I'm leaving for a 3 week vacation in october. Ive bought a peli case with custom cutouts for my watches and would be taking 5 watches with me. But after this video i reconsidered. Might just take two with me , one on my wrist and one in a travelpouch which i can carry everywhere with me.
Ok listen up people, this is a PSA for frequent travelers that's a bit wary bringing valuables. From my experince of countless times I habe to travel to other countries for work or even when my wife and I travels and we brought several of our watches, important documents and her jewelries I always store them in a SDB of our banks. Especially if you travel to relatively bigger cities and you are a client of internatinal banks e.g Citi or HSBC. Even if youre not a frequent customer of the dedicated banks they will gladly facilitate. If youre a bit skeptical of the procedures, you can always call ahead to the branches. Dont hesitate to contact your local branch either, they will always be helpfull! This is an important measures to take specifically if you travel to countries that for lack of a better word- less stable from a geopolitical standpoint. Ive done this countless times when I traveled to Hong Kong, South Africa, south Americas, east Europe, Russia and even the south east asian countries. I dont mean to offend anyone from those countries, but better safe than sorry.
Great topic ! I only travel with one watch these days, and I wear a bracelet and bring a couple of straps to change it up when we go out. But these days I hear about people getting robbed while out and about. "Life's a gamble", wear what you can afford to lose. 🤔❤
I’ve travelled extensively to Europe from Australia since 1990. Whenever I go overseas I just wear a basic Casio digital. I’m not there to look good!🤪🤣 I’m there to see the sights, not be paranoid about some lowlife targeting me for an easy financial gain! I wear my good/expensive watches at home. 😎👍🏼🇦🇺
Bring ONE versatile GADA watch with 3 quick release straps: 1 stainless steel bracelet; 1 leather; and 1 rubber/silicone strap. This way you have a look for any occasion and variety. And nothing goes in the safe.
I realized long ago that I can’t have nice things. I break them. So I have capped my collection at this point to only watches under $500. So if I were to lose or break them I’m not out a whole lot. I do limit my travel collection to three plus what I have on my wrist and I don’t worry about it. ☺️
Very long shot , but could you hook up a Ring camera with the hotel wifi and leave it in the vault ? You'll have video evidence and get a phone notification when the vault is opened.
I don’t do a lot of traveling but when I am out of town for a few days I only take the watch I am wearing. A couple of years ago I spent some time in a hospital due to a medical emergency and the last thing I did before the EMT’s arrived was put on an old Casio beater. My “good” watches were left at home where they were safe. Hey, you gotta think ahead.😉
My main worry about using hotel safes when on international travel is the loss of my passport and other important documents which I tend to keep in the safe. Loosing one's passport is much more troublesome in many cases than loosing an expensive watch or watches. You have to make a police report, than go to your embassy for emergency travel documentation, plus you would be grilled like a criminal as to how you lost or had it stolen at the embassy. Problem is, if you carry your passport around with you, chances of having it stolen are probably greater than if it was kept in a hotel safe.
Very interesting topic. When traveling, I consider the risks and then choose which watch I want to bring, and I just bring the one watch, and it stays in one place: on my wrist.
When I do travel I make sure that the hotels have a central vault with an insurance policy. Another route to take is to find a bank near you that can provide a safety deposit box. I don't mind the hustle back and forth when it means that at the end of the day my watches are secured. ( Barring a bank robbery, Lol ).
When traveling I used special loops on the inside of my overcoat from which to hang my collection and present a prospective buyer with a quick glimpse of my wares. Until I went through customs during my visit to Russia.
I take 3. A workout watch(most recently a metal G-shock)…and a dress-diver…usually another diver as well(Unless a different time zone and I’ll take a GMT just for fun. Take them in my carry-on if I’m flying. I never take anything that cost much more than $500. The Rolex and the Omega stay at home.
Staying at hotel always puts your items at the mercy of hotel staff once you're not in that room. And I did realize those hotel safes all have a backup fail safe which as you acknowledge only makes sense. The hope is you have a honest people working at the hotel. There is only so much you can do in the end. My general rule is simply not to make it easy for them or as you inferred with having an additional lock, not to make things seem enticing. I have traveled with people who have a lot more trust on hotel staff than I do and will leave items like sunglasses, watches on nightstands, tables etc when they leave their hotel room. To each, their own I suppose. Using the safe works, or hide your items where they aren't easily visible and hope for the best is what I do.
I usually bring two..... a G-Shock and an under $100 "dressy" watch.. or an older dressy watch I'm not worried about.... The dressy one is mostly on my wrist all the time.... the Casio comes out when I go in the pool.
Have always traveled with at least five watches, locally and internationally. Never had any problems. All of my travel gear and belongings are expensive. Theft is a risk of living, unfortunately. That's why my nice watches are insured, including travel anywhere in the world. Can't live life paralyzed with fear.
I travel for business mostly. I usually bring a sport and a dress watch but they will not be my favorite watches. Trusting your watches or valuable goods to a hotel safe is the dumbest thing you can do. However, if I must keep something in a safe, I will install a wifi surveillance cam in my room so that I can monitor it when I am outside of my room. Those cams are quite affordable actually.
A couple thoughts. I always hang the do-not-disturb sign on the hotel room door. There is very little chance that anyone will enter and be tempted. Secondly, be very concerned about attracting violent thieves with your watch in a foreign country. They may decide to demand it just for the chance that it might turn out to be valuable.
what you need is a diplomat's briefcase where once it is closed any attempt to open it by anyone but the owner would trigger a small explosion or electrical charge.
The photo with the blue water and violet sunset behind the Zodiac is fantastic! I'd only travel with one versatile watch on my wrist. Maybe a G-Shock on the side lol
I travel with a square G-Shock GW-M5610. It’s dependable, indestructible, keeps accurate time, solar powered, and it’s about $100 so no big deal if something happens to it. A replica watch is probably a good idea if you need something dressy.
1. If someone steals the watches without breaking the safe, it MUST be an employee of the hotel. I‘m pretty sure that when an override mechanism has been used, this is recorded in the memory of the safe. 2. putting your watches inside some old socks and storing them in hidden place is pretty safe, too
I travel with 5 watches usually, one on wrist…3 in a roll, and one in a single watch wallet kinda thing. I’ve been robbed a few times and even had vehicles stolen, never watches though luckily lol. Back in my 35mm photography days I lost $18,000 in equipment in one single incident. I should be kinda paranoid, but honestly loss is my last thought generally.
Another snag with the padlock thing that I can envisage is the possibility that the room maid or some similar person, who probably has no intention of stealing from you, may see it, and surmise that you don't trust them. If they do, expect your toothbrush to be used to clean the toilet rim.
Until recently I didn't have any watches that I would be sorta crushed if they were stolen. I've always had a number of nice watches, but typically I just travel with one. My last trip I took a watch roll, but I was driving, so I could hide it in the car. If I was traveling by air, my biggest concern would be losing the watch(es) in the security check somehow. Lastly, I'd likely travel with the best watch (not a Rolex) on my wrist, a nice ( but inexpensive) casual watch and a beater in a watch case. Recently, I've heard of a scam where girls ( sometimes prostitutes) will lure a guy, back to his hotel, slip a pill in his drink, take his watch and wallet, then leave. I think the additional lock on the safe is probably effective for a night or two, because anyone who was slipping into the room to hit the safe is likely not carrying the tools they would need to defeat the supplementary lock; it might be too loud and take too much time!?
travel with multiple watches and have fun. You simply need to drop down to a price point that reduces your worry. I love to take my Vostok Amphibia for swimming, but I won't lose any sleep if it's stolen.
I know it's hard to choose. But just bring one watch. Hell, I only bring my G-shock GAS-100 or a square. Check out the lockpicking lawyer. You will see how easy it is to defeat any lock at most a safe is just a slight hindrance to someone reasonably skilled. Good to know you actually did not lose anything.
Interesting video. We’ll be discussing this on the Bobby Legs Livestream on Sunday, Aug. 14. Hope to see you there. The safe story was super interesting.
“You’re an idiot and trying to ruin our vacation”. Damn, our wives might be related. Terrific subject matter as I travel extensively for work. Another subject related to travel is the TSA security scan and the need to demagnetize our watches. Maybe this can be a “Part II”?
If you stay at a hotel that doesn't have a central vault for real valuables, you shouldn't be bringing expensive watches or jewellery. Room safes are merely against stuff being casually swiped from your room when the door is open (cleaners etc), not serious thieves.
I personally don't see point to bring multiple watches. If I'm going somewhere, valuable or inexpensive, just bring my best watch that is capable for foreseeable use and the one to make memories with on that vacation or general travelling. Not worth the trouble and worries for all the factors you mentioned and probably a few others I can conjure up in my head. Additionally, depending on where you are going and/or coming from.. might you get stopped or harassed by customs if u have too many valuable watches on you and they want proof you did not buy them new abroad otherwise they want to charge u duty? Idk, I can see that being a potential issue. Lastly, if I travel, I probably don't care about having a GMT*. I don't have to travel for work and has and will always be for recreation. As such, I never need to know my home time or other time zones. I'm at where I'm at and don't care what goes on, timewise, anywhere else in the world. I'll be on vacation, right? Time for yourself and leave whatever you left behind .. well, just leave it behind. * I will say having a "traveler's watch" would be more useful.. one that has that ability to jump hour forwards or backwards, the ones in many modern Omegas for example, would be good to quickly set at new local time zone without having to hack the movement.
i travel with a cheaper g shock. i have kids so i need something good for hotel pools and roller coasters. my 25 dollar casio world time is also a fantastic choice.
Definitely something to consider. My last vacation, I took 6. I kept them in watch rolls which were with me in a back-pack in transit. We stayed in a high-end hotel with a room safe but I did not lock them up. Most expensive piece I had was 3K, the others were 1k or less. Anyway, this is a question of relative risk. I've never had anything stolen from me in a hotel but there is a first time for everything. I sure as Sh#t would not do this with a high-end luxury piece.
Interesting topic! I always bring watches that are not very expensive…about max 3000 in value in sum…but yes I will take less watches with me. Maybe it’s better to concentrate on only one or two watches per vacation. But on the other hand how save are the watches at home when you are away….never really save…nice collection of watches btw…nice variety. At what hotel are you staying 😂😂😂?!
My friend lost his omega at the airport and he strongly suspects it was stolen from his bag after it came out of the X Ray machine. By the time he realised he was already on the flight
Some hotels have safety deposit boxes which can only be accessed with two keys you have one they have one. Usually it’s at the front desk or close by. Otherwise just insure your watches as part of your home contents and pay a bit more to insure them when away from home . It’s going to cost a bit more but give you peace of mind and protection in case you get robbed in the street . I would not bother insuring stuff like Zodiac just the really valuable pieces like Rolex , AP, Vacheron , Patek . The other stuff is only a few grand sending hand so I would not bother . In ur case the Pam and Chopard maybe that’s it .
Basically leave your good stuff at home , always take my San Martin bb58 . There is so much that can go wrong including some countries demanding import tax , security in room. I never take anything on holiday I won’t mind loosing
Thank you first of all. Once my Festina cronograph was stolen at home's airport. Someone had ripped off my trolley-case and stolen that piece I have mentioned at my arrival. Well it wasn't expensive but its value was because it was a Dad's Christmas present I've recieved. Still makes me feel like... an idiot, Why I did package it in that case that instead carried with me? Well take a couple of time pieces with you, polyvalent ones and not very expensive but always under your supervision/control. Well thank you!!! Saludos!!!!
Instead of putting a padlock on the safe, why not have a camera with a view of the safe. That way, if a hotel employee breaks in, the hotel is responsible.
When ever I have traveled with a less affordable watch it never leaves my wrist. If I take more then one watch for the most part I never take anything that is not in the affordable range.
1 I don't live in fear. 2 use some common sense. I'm sorry to say that if you own a Rolex it is probably not wise to wear it around a budget resort. Try not to ruin your vacation
My wife and I each travel with 4 watches, one on the wrist and three in our watch boxes. We haven't stayed in a hotel in about 5 years as we purchased an RV. I have a hiding space behind a false wall cabinet where we keep all of our valuables.
I mean this is true with anything we do right. Just because there's a chance that something will happen doesn't mean we need to live in fear of that happening. I can be robbed going to work, going to the grocery store, etc etc, in theory is possible but shouldn't deter us from wearing our watches. Obviously don't be flaunting a 10k watch in areas you don't know and common sense applies here. Just my two cents.
Hey I agree for the most part. My point here is traveling with multiple watches increases the risk of a watch being stolen lost or damaged. If you are wearing one watch that risk is dramatically decreased however there is always risk.
Thanks for putting together this video. In addition to worries due to potential damage and theft to my watches while traveling, I had a bad experience of my watches somehow got magnetized at the conveyor belt system at security checkpoints at the airports. :(. As a result, my watches ran fast for the entire duration of the trip until I has a chance get them demagnetized when I got home.
@@eyeheartsushi2212 I had picked up a watch demagnetizer from eBay for about $15 (plus shipping). Just follow instructions on one of those videos 9n TH-cam. It is n9thing complicated at all.
Good points Chris. And this isn't limited to watches. I went to Cancun and the room refrigerator was packed with food and booze you could buy. Didn't touch it all week. Upon checkout, the front desk said we owed them somewhere around $65.00 for the snacks and booze. We said we didn't touch it. We said it was likely the cleaning staff. They threatened us with the police. We paid the extortion fee. Nice racket they had going there. Won't go to that shit-hole country again. P.S. You are the value in your relationship brother, not your wife. It's you who provides and protects. She should adore you, rather than find you irritating and call you an idiot and suggest you are ruining the trip with your tests. I bet she she shit- tests you a lot. That's a red flag, that she's using and manipulating you for what you can give to her. Time to get red- pilled, especially if she doesn't give you all of the sex you want.
"The short answer to that question is no." Uh, you're making a false assumption that any of these very rare scenarios will happen. Too many people live in fear and you're only feeding into this trend. Could your watches be stolen? Yes. Are the odds of the watches being stolen even remotely high? No. FYI: You can use a powerful rare earth magnet to open most of these safes, no "special card" needed. Check out the Lock Picking Lawyer's TH-cam channel.
Simple rule - never use a hotel safe, unless they have at least a full inch of steel all-around and NO bypass.
Great vid Chris, awesome information. Tell the wifey, your viewers appreciate it. 🙏
Thanks so much and I will let her know ☺️!!
Wow, this video is insightful. Thank you
Thanks Ken !!!
i travel with a cheaper g shock. i have kids so i need something good for hotel pools and roller coasters. my 25 dollar casio world time is also a fantastic choice.
I travel with an everyday watch on my wrist and a Casio Duro for the pool or beach. Sad to say, hard to trust strangers.
I am prepared to lose any of the watches I bring on vacation...
"The Lockpicking Lawyer" channel has picked a couple of these hotel safes... they aren't actually that secure.
Funny and good info, thanks! Did you guys hit the Grand Canyon? We were going to but it was 115 degrees and still crowded in July -- nuts!
What about placing a spy cam in hotel rooms you stay at? Point it towards the safe.
I'm surprised that you're only learning this now, the thing about hotel safes I mean.
I think I kind of knew that there had to be a way for hotel management to get into the safes however I don't think I realized just how easy it was...
@@millieguitarcrasher I guess it would be a hassle. For me personally, it would be worth it because of the contents of the safe.
@@millieguitarcrasher That’s a good idea.
When ever I have traveled with a less affordable watch it never leaves my wrist. If I take more then one watch for the most part I never take anything that is not in the affordable range.
Ahaha😅 I'm crying for what the wife thinks! I travel with 2 or 3 watches. In business trips though only with one.
My wife finds me annoying too🤣🤣🤣
Those hotel room safes are useless I've seen them open by entering 0000 not cool .
Bring 2 watches and wear them both at the same time just like Kevin O'leary does.
You did not even mention the taxes required from bringing multiple luxury watches in certain countries.
you could also have them stolen from your home when away if you left them home
When are you doing the video for the jack turner giveaways
1 I don't live in fear. 2 use some common sense. I'm sorry to say that if you own a Rolex it is probably not wise to wear it around a budget resort. Try not to ruin your vacation
Was this because you've been watching The White Lotus, Chris? 🤣
Lol literally just watched that last night.. 😂😂😂
I’d only travel with 1 watch on bracelet and bring some extra straps and a tool.
I would probably rather give Justonemorewatch a watch than take from his collection.
My wife and I each travel with 4 watches, one on the wrist and three in our watch boxes. We haven't stayed in a hotel in about 5 years as we purchased an RV. I have a hiding space behind a false wall cabinet where we keep all of our valuables.
Good to know William🤔😆!
I can definitely relate to the whole annoying the Mrs with all things watch related 🙄
I never travel with multiple watches. I just don’t feel safe. If I do it would be just 2 inexpensive watches and not luxury watches
I make sure to wear a cheap 2 dollar Big Lots watch when going on a vacation I don't want my nice watches being stolen
If you are wearing one watch that risk is dramatically decreased however there is always risk.
they can pull the whole safe and take it home with them also
I take paganis on vacation… problem solved.
I'm in America. I have been allowed to travel the whole time.
My rule: Don't travel with anything you are not willing to part with.
Or travel with the mother in law ( OK, I heard that as a kid ...different times ..ahem..).
Lmao. Great video and all our spouses probably think this of us.
How did you demagnetize them?
@@eyeheartsushi2212 I had picked up a watch demagnetizer from eBay for about $15 (plus shipping). Just follow instructions on one of those videos 9n TH-cam. It is n9thing complicated at all.
@@tc6578 Cool. Thanks for the info.
Easy to pick a padlock. There are dozens of videos on TH-cam explaining how.
These people are trustworthy? Haha, you have no way of knowing.
