    I just finished changing the cv axle on my 2018 drivers side Nisan Altima, you know, the one that's just supposed to just pop out. Well, it didn't pop out, it didn't pry out and I'm working on in my car port on the ground and was about to give up and take it to a shop last night when I saw your video. I cut a slit in the boot up against the cup of the inner bearing holder with just enough room to fit the head of vise grips. I was going to give it a couple of test tugs and on the first tug it popped out. My life is complete.

    Improvement on your method: Part of the problem in getting these things off is the offset force applied by either a prybar or your method. Try putting a visegrip on each bearing (three visegrips), equalizing the load on the axle.

Mine was separated and off but inner was seized by retainer clip. All I had to do was put it back and put a vice grip. Never thought about that? Ughh. Had never had this happen like it has on this Sentra prior. Fml. Great stuff man. I would add some tags to make it easier to find PLEASE 😆 👏🏼. I noticed in the video you are about one hood pull away, you had already kicked lose the retainer ring. I could tell you had so I knew it was coming any second and you stopped lol. Shoulda done like you did but instead of yankin on it like a slidehammer, wrap a chain around the opposite end and secure with a bolt through the end link of the chain and the last link used to wrap with and then wrap the other chain end around the likes of a sledgemaul or double jack sledgehammer or something similar the same as you did around the end of the half shaft and swing the sledgehammer/sledgemaul/etc. Like you would a golf club. Its always worked for me without fail.

I tried this first with grease still on the part and the plyers fell off. Then I made a "clean" spot, repositioned the vice grips and "hammered" it this way about 12 times then pow! It fell right out! Only took about 15 minutes. Thank you! Now I can complete this "realitively easy" job! 👍

    I saw a short that was easier than this... Simply tie a rope around the half shaft and let about 10 ft of rope and tie that end to heavy hammer, face away from the car and swing that hammer like your swinging a baseball bat and mine popped right out on second swing... Actually came flying out

    I have a 2003 Subaru Forester, and the rubber boot of the CV next to the transmission (differential?) on the front passenger side was damaged and there was grease all over the shaft and everything around it. I ordered a replacement from RockAuto and that arrived weeks ago. I finally worked-up the courage to try to remove the existing CV axle. I won't bore you with the frozen bolts everywhere, requiring heating with a MAP torch and the incredibly tight hub nut which I eventually had to cut out with one of those vibrating saws (I used a German-made Fein that I borrowed from my son). It took forever but eventually I got the nut off the shaft end in two pieces. The splines on the end of the shaft and the knuckle were in good shape, and I was able to hammer the shaft out of the knuckle and free that end of the CV axle. I could not see the inner "cup" containing the three wheels of that CV next to the transmission, but I was able to pull the shaft and the attached three wheels of the inner CV, and the most part of the failed boot, out of the cup that the wheels had been in. However, the cup was stuck in the differential, and the strut and the coil spring blocked my view of the cup. So, I had to remove strut and spring. That gave me a good end-on view of the cup, but I was not able to move it out of the differential with a pry bar while lying on my back under the grease-soaked area. I cleaned the remaining grease out of the cup, put the freed end of the CV with its wheels into the cup, and got an "alligator" type vise grip, clamped it on the end of the cup where there is a track for one of the wheels, and following the ingenious example of the author of this fantastic video, gave one not very energetic yank of the shaft and the cup popped out. One try!! I am pretty sure I would have never thought of this method if I had not watched the video. Many thanks BundyGarage.

    My vice grip keeps falling off when I pull on the Axel. It's a small shitty little vice grip. Is that maybe why?

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you need a man sized one!!! JK go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and get an original Vise Grip pair of pliers.

    • @coreygammell9044
      @coreygammell9044 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bundysgarage so would that be the reason they keep falling off? Not clamping hard enough because they're small and cheap? I also tried using 5 pound pull hammer, ended up accidently pulling on a metal pipe that's on the engine and steam violently expelled from it. Now there's green (I'm assuming coolant) all over the under side of my engine and Axel joint.

    Came across the exact same problem on my 08 Acura TL but what I did is get a long tow strap wrapped it around the back of the axle, then gave it some slack and wrapped the other end to a big sledge hammer gave it 3 swings and it popped right off!

  • @philipsmithnyc
    @philipsmithnyc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Don't do this, you will damage the bearings which are costly. Just buy a 5 pound slide hammer and use that. You want to reboot your axle as opposed to replacing with an inferior aftermarket product.

    If you can clamp around the inner cv carrier and tie a ratcheting strap to a fixed object - like a tree. Apply as much pressure as you can. Then, work around the c-clip pushing it in the locking groove. The tension from the strap will prevent the c-clip from popping back out of the locking groove.

    Better idea:
    1. Attach your vice grips to the side of the Satanic cup. I chose to attach to the 3 o’clock position. Lock ‘em down tight as you can.
    2. Get a pickle fork (ball joint separator) and drop the handle end of it into that hole in your control arm.
    3. Slide the fork over the screw on the back of your vice grips.
    4. While leveraging some pressure on the pickle fork handle,
    5. Hit the back of the pickle fork with the 5lb sledgehammer. Done!
    Looks like a lot of people are having this same experience! Thank you TH-cam. Lol!

    Get an ax, sledgehammer, or any tool with a heavy end on it.
    Get a 5 foot piece of wire of what I'm guessing is 1/8th inch thick. It may be less.
    Two clamps for the wire.
    Wrap one end around the CV joint and clamp it.
    Make a loop with the other and put the tool into it.
    Start swinging at the exact angle the joint is in the transmission and the momentum will make it pop right out. I think it's less than 4 bucks if you already have the tool. Works perfectly.
