I once had a person say their brother would pick up the item and that they would pay with Zelle. I told him, Zelle your brother so he could bring cash. Crickets.
@@FunkyBananaBear I'm curious too...unless it's the typical thing where they intentionally overpay you (by a little or a lot) and then ask for a refund (in which case, you'd have to send their own zelle/venmo/cash app a brand new payment from your account) and then a few days later, you get an alert that the original payment they sent you was removed because it was from a stolen/hacked account. So you are out whatever amount you "refunded" them for and will never see that money again since they will have withdrawn their money immediately after you sent it and be long gone. You could open a case, but there are very little protections in place for these types of local sales, which is why Facebook suggests you go through their payment portal only. (though the seller loses a percentage that way and payments take longer to go through, so it's less appealing)
I only sell or buy on marketplace local. My city has even set up “safe spots” to meet at police department - fire stations etc…I also only deal in cash deals only!
yes! I always ONLY meet at police stations during daylight hours! Any honest buyer/seller won't have a problem with that, so if someone agrees to meet me there that's a good sign that it'll probably work out.
I’ve gotten the same messages when selling stuff on the fb marketplace… I usually respond by asking them if their whore mother still does that thing where the monkey does her from behind and she spits his goo out of her mouth….. That usually ends the conversation…
That’s a bad one, typically they are creating a Google Voice account with your phone number and your name will be linked to that account. They will then proceed to use that Google Voice number to scam other people.
Yeah I kept getting people that were acting like they were interested in buying something but then ask me for my phone number and whenever I said "I can just talk to you on here the messenger app" they stopped replying. Now I'm trying to ship something but I have so many questions like why won't FB let me ship stuff, how to you get paid, and how do you set it up so you can ship all over the country?
If they want a phone nunber, give them your Google Voice nunber. Their whole scam falls apart since you can't set up a fake Google Voice account using an existing Google Voice nunber.

I Just tried selling for the first time recently. Not a great experience. Just very annoying. All people interested first in buying, were foreign names and from a newly created " Group" with newly updates photos, NOT an actual personal facebook account..which I thought was strange. I wasn't sure if people do that for privacy reasons or not when buying but seems sketchy to me. Then noticed that was the first thing they were trying to do was get an email or cell number. One gave me there supposed cell and wanted me to text them, (again trying to get my cell #) I looked up the number and it was on the other side of the country. I told them all communication was to be done through facebook messenger and Also that I noticed that the number they gave me was from another state way across the country. Then not another message from them. Then got some non-foreign messages from the same newly created group thing. I just started ignoring messages until someone sent one from an actual established account, that wasn't just created so that I could view the profile and kind of check them out at least, . Then some seemed legit but after asking if available and wanting me to deliver it to them when it clearly state local pickup, Who the heck has time for all that nonsense! I don't know if I will continue to try selling things on there.
I was selling a PS5 for $400 and some dude in Florida said he’d pay $100 extra for shipping. They’re $500 brand new so I said “why not buy it new at a store” and never heard from him again lol
The other thing they want your email and phone number for is they will try to log into your Facebook account and when Facebook texts you a code to reset your password the scammer tries to get you to tell it to them telling you it’s a payment confirmation code or whatever. They want to lock you out of your own account to use your account to post their own scam ads
Thank you for the information. I had a scam just like what you were talking about today and it really shook me up. I rang my son about it and he identified straight away that it was a scam, so I didn’t respond to the scammer from then on. Thanks for putting the information out there.
Def almost got scammed trying to sell my couch when I was moving. The whole “ I’ll have someone pick it up, I’ll email you the check and you can upload it to your account” was a huge red flag, but it didn’t hit me until later before I almost agreed to it lol. Always trust your gut 👏🏾
I’m selling my couch now and after 5mins of posting it two buyers have messaged it. Both said that their oldest son will come pick it up and they will only do bank transfers or paypal. I turned down both as I said cash only upon pick up. It’s easier and secured to do it that way.
@@ellagracelle1871 Listed a refrigerator today - got some real interest. The one that was not real started with - Is the fridge good? I said as listed. He asked - what is your best price. Yah - I told him I have l have lots of interest. Said OK = then he said if I took Vemo and another service and will have his sister pick it up. - I said no. Started arguing with me Why, - - Yup the scam is real. I sold ot to a person in town.
I just had someone text me a "verification code" that they wanted me to text back to them "for their security" and this was a local pick up only item. If Google hadn't messaged me saying this code is a scam, I would have fallen for it. Now I don't know how they could have used that code to scam me, but I'm guessing it was a way to get gain access to my phone. Now let me say that I did leave my phone # so they could call me. That may have been a mistake.
The scammer was trying to set up a Google phone number with your data so they could co-opt your email. They simply needed you to give them the 2-step verification code that Google just sent you. This will be your worst nightmare to try to get out of.
Thank you very much for these warnings on scammers. They're all a bunch of scumbags, but they do have to be recognised and avoided if possible. You two are great!
Any chance of getting off of facebook and creating a alternative online classifieds to buy, sell, trade and post wanted listings? It's too much work to get on here and established only to have facebook ban or block me from their buying/selling groups while allowing many of these spammers and scammers to make many hundreds of thousands of posts. Makes me wonder if facebook has some partnership with them. Did I violate facebook's policy by blocking obvious spammers or scammers?
Here in Germany, they're always trying the DHL/UPS/Amazon pick up scam so much, It's really annoying. I was trying to sell some furniture and I got like 5 messages right away trying to pull this stuff on me. I just replied to the last guy (with the other ones I didn't even bother) "bro, you're like the 5th scammer that has tried that on me today. Get a real fucking job". He read it and didn't even bother to reply. 😂
Yes, the same in the UK, latest one is wanting to pay by paypal, they then collect the item and complain to paypal, saying it was not posted or it was faulty so they can get their money back!
I just listed a drafting table and I put in the description I DO NOT REPLY TO IS THIS AVAILABLE. And they still reply with that generic message. So many scammers have replied to start off the conversation. Aready had someone that had just joined Facebook and asked for my number and their husband was going to pick up. I said Nope. Messenger only and I deleted the message. I also get people clicking on the button that says Offer. I accepted the offer and then nothing. I ended up deleting the message too. Scammers
i love when you have a huge item and they ask if it's available and their profile say they are across the country. i say yes and you'll need to be picking it up in person with cash only. they disappear.
If private sellers had to upload a photo of a government issued photo ID held next to their face that should help to reduce the number of scammers on Facebook Marketplace.
The biggest one is when I am trying to sell the phone and they are offering me extra to come to there house, I always try to meet them at the bank or somewhere crowded
Thanks for the tip I was selling some shoes but i had just seen and heard about this on your video and couple people texted me about my shoes but they wanted my number and verification code
Had a scammer say he needed my email, to verify a Venmo payment, which I thought was weird, but being new to selling I gave it, then he sends me some weird email saying I need to upgrade to a business account because of account limits. The whole time none of this activity was actually happening on my real Venmo account. I told the dude to give me cash or the deal was off. He says, “Laugh. You can’t be serious.” 😂 I say, “Yep, sure am. Bye scammer.” The cash response sure weeds out the frauds. Wising up to these people so hopefully no more mistakes going forward. Thanks for this video!
I had the same thing happen to me about the business profile. Wanted me to call this “Venmo support” number that they provided. Confirmed with areal Venmo support was in fact not a thing.
Be careful with Facebook Marketplace because I got scammed, when I was trying to sell a sofa and didn't even realise until after I had made the transfer. And this was a couple days ago. Luckily the bank reimbursed me as it was the very first time I've been scammed and been beating myself up over it since. Normally I'm good at avoiding these kinds of things but I think I must've been having an off day but let's just say: 3rd party transfer site and holding fee etc.
I had someone overpay for an item off of Craigslist and when i went to deposit the check into my account, the clerk caught it. Otherwise I'd have fallen for sending them the difference.
Thanks for a great video, I'm in the UK and selling any thing on Marketplace is a nightmare! I will only ever accept cash and that does help keeping the scammers at bay. I also find anytime I buy anything on line (only ever from reputable companies) I am bombarded with scam emails! Thanks again, and stay lucky
good job advising but just because there are hoops doesn’t mean it’s a scam . i’m deployed so can’t do pick up so my family does the pick up but payment goes through paypal or some insured source
Unfortunately, it's only secure for the buyer but not the seller. Sadly due to scamming, you'll probably need to start sending whoever is picking something up for you the cash in advance to do so and be sure to explain that to the seller. They'll know by your Facebook page though if you're a "professional scammer" or not by your friends or lack of. Thank you for your service 🙏 Sincerely ✌❤ 🇺🇸
I have someone that said they want it but want to pick it up tomorrow but pay me now so i can mark it sold but wants my email address so they can pay "buyer and seller protected as a business deal"... No matter what i say to them they just keep saying that same thing and say they need my email to send thw money
Thannk you so much for this For shipping on fb marketplace do I have to ship the item physically or can someone else ship for me. Honestly I'm not interested in shipping. Or is there a way to sell without shipping
Yeah, I had someone send me a text telling me they lived locally but I should disregard the phone number shown (across the other side of the country). Then they asked me to call them at the number they provided to talk to an associate about coming to pick up the product the next day or the day after that. I looked the persons name up and there wasn't anyone with that name in that town and there wasn't anyone with that name from the location of the phone number area code. I did get some info that the persons name was big with the marxist society in this country, from about 80 years ago! I think that's how they wanted to capture my phone number.
This is not necessarily a scam it is false advertising I don't know how many times I've just skim through the curb alerts or the items that are free only to waste my time reading the whole article and looking at the pictures and they put in the description box how much money they want for each item when the beginning of the advertisement for their items is listed as free is it to draw customers in because I'm almost ready to just drop marketplace for my searches
Thanks for the video👍 All u said in the video is true n seen people like this a lot in recent times. Fed up with selling items in marketplace to strangers.
What about the buyer when do I send the money do I just have to trust that they will ship me the item and is it better to go through Facebook marketplace?
Looking more and more like selling should only be either cash in person or through Paypal (on the spot and not pending)... Is this a good strategy.?I just got scammed on marketplace my mistake (which was stupid of me) was buy it on a money request message on FB, Yes, it was meta, but nothing was exhibited as the purchase. If hee had bought through Marketplace as an item, thee would be records, shipping, etc...but I was stupid.
Can a seller see who viewed their item? I never asked anything about the item they were selling, I merely viewed the photo only. I then received messages and photos sent to me from them. I had no idea they could see who viewed the items. I haven't opened any of the messages.
Hi ! Nice Video. Very resourceful. I am seeking your valuable suggestion for the following matter- I have listed advertisement in my Facebook Marketplace namely- `House Rent' in favour of my two Buyers, who ordered me. I have provided every updates for 10 days to my buyers. Now my buyers are not paying my dues. I am requesting them repeatedly but they are silent. Now how can I get my dues ? what can I do to get my dues ? Can you suggest me please. I will be grateful to you. Thanks.
How can you prevent the shipping scam as there is something I want to buy which is way to far from we’re I live and my only option is shipping so is there anything I can do to avoid it?
I’m having some problems selling on Facebook marketplace. On a few of my items I didn’t accept the amount they offered or they bought the item for less and I didn’t accept.I then couldn’t edit or delete the post? The last order today was a concert shirt I lowered the price I wanted on messenger to someone from $110 to $90.Only $90.I then see it was bought without my approval for $70?
Had 4 out of 5 scam attempts today. Only one seemed ok. The envolope scam seems popular. And also im sending my dogs cats uncles pigeon to pick up. Lol its nad out there !!!! People are doing this. Its sad in away so many think that way. 😮
I got large heavy stuff to sell like a wood chipper so they have to come to my house to load it. I have sold stuff and met them somewhere but I can't do it with this stuff its too large and heavy. I've been a kinda of chicken to use Facebook Marketplace having people meet me at my house.
I took a truckload of mowers to the flea market but I didn't have time to show them to customers because I sell electronics and I was too busy. Trying to sell mowers at the flea market was a failure probably because I was alone with no help. I probably should have put fuel in them and let them idle because people asked about them all they wanted to know was if they ran because they looked like they were wrenched on a lot with parts from other mowers, that's because they are. I used to do lawn maintenance.
so many scams re: used cars....one way to flush scammers out is to ask for the vin #. I have found scammers refuse to comply with request or are non responsive.. good luck
Oh no 😫 As a reseller, for super low priced high value/popular items that I know I'm going to have to fight for - In an attempt to beat the people in line in front of me I'll offer a few bucks over asking price (which is fine because there's still room for me to make a decent profit) and I often have to arrange shippers to pick it up because I buy from all over the country and 99% of people don't want to be bothered with shipping the item. So I'm the one that sometimes offers over ask price and says I'm going to have someone else pick it up for me. Based on what you guys are talking about around 7:45 I'm basically a walking red flag lol!! 😅
Hi thank you for the inf, how can i say to somebody if that individual dont give me trust or confident ? Thanks is hard to denied or they will feel descriminated,
Simple. Ask the questions you need to make sure it's an honest transaction. Make it all cash, and make the meeting place either one of your banks or local police station! ❤
Having heard of so many scams going on Facebook by folks who just trusted the instructions of the scammer makes me wonder how many of those being scammed are first time victims. Why are they so gullible to believe total strangers our mother, fathers on down telling us "beware of strangers" over and over until we left home for our own reasons? The complicated way they use to get you to believe you they are legitimate is (to me) a huge problem with me. Is the population of gullible people that big that con artists can make a good living scamming people who are easy targets?
As a Buyer, how can i make sure they will send the product after i send money through Paypal ?? I once send money to a seller through paypal (not connected through market place), after 5 days i msg her and ask if she already send the item but now she is not responding my msg.... any idea what to do ?? thx bfore....
Hard to say. I only set up my fb account this month because I want to use local marketplace (having a baby). Just have to use your best judgment I guess.
Why do people say they are interested go back and forth with time to pick it up and then all of sudden stop opening messages? This happens a lot to me.
I am trying to sell a car on FB Marketplace and I keep getting people asking for my phone number and address… Am showing car at my house but seems like people are just trying to get information out of me… Any Suggestions???
Same here! She said her son was driving over to pick it up. I looked at her profile and she looked barely old enough to drive! 😂 When l questioned her on it she told me she was 38 and her son was 18 🤦♀️
So does Facebook have thier own payment system where there's records just in case you don't get payment or as a buyer if you don't get the item for shipped item. I'm trying to buy someth8ng at the moment it's in another city and I'm scared to send the money with no guarantee I'm getting my item.
First time on your channel. I am downsizing and planning to sell some stuff so I thought educating myself will be the first step. Just wanted to let you know how pleasant it was to listen to you both: at no point, neither of you tried to go over the other as you see these days on most couples (meghan and Harry, etc.) it was nice to learn of your expertise and experiences, thank you!. ps. I know you are very proud of your family, and you should be! but if I were you, I will remove the picture behind you where the faces of your kids show .... there are many weirdos out there :-(
I should’ve watched this before I got scammed or almost. I gave my phone number and email address but that’s it. And I opened the email confirmation.. but that’s it. Should I change my number and email straight away? Or am I fine?
I've even had one guy try to pay me with a credit card, because he was low on cash, before coming to collect an item. He was very insistent and finally gave up because I'll only accept cash. Due to new banking rules in Australia banks can withdraw fraudulent funds any time up to six months after the event. Hence, any form of electronic payment is a risk, you don't know where the funds came from.

They can present counterfeit cashier's checks. If you take that for payment, have them meet you at the bank and go with you while you deposit it. It's simply best to accept cash.
So I have this person who wants to but something from me they first offer if they could COD then a check then they want to buy it thru Facebook that’s the first scetchy things but a hour before I got a message from someone else with the same last name with more scetchy things I pretty sure it’s a scam but Im not sure?

They want to lock you out of your own account to use your account to post their own scam ads
They literally said that at the beginning 🙄
Thank you for the information. I had a scam just like what you were talking about today and it really shook me up. I rang my son about it and he identified straight away that it was a scam, so I didn’t respond to the scammer from then on. Thanks for putting the information out there.
Def almost got scammed trying to sell my couch when I was moving. The whole “ I’ll have someone pick it up, I’ll email you the check and you can upload it to your account” was a huge red flag, but it didn’t hit me until later before I almost agreed to it lol. Always trust your gut 👏🏾
Glad you didn't get scammed! Definitely trust your gut
They did dat to my son and scammed him of a $1000 😭
I’m selling my couch now and after 5mins of posting it two buyers have messaged it. Both said that their oldest son will come pick it up and they will only do bank transfers or paypal. I turned down both as I said cash only upon pick up. It’s easier and secured to do it that way.
So sorry for your son. $1000 is a lot of money.... 😢
@@asinheaventhey need my email address to do that right?
Thx, Rob and Melissa every tidbit of info you share with us, makes us all safer, and more likely to be successful.
Thanks for watching!
Thankyu so much you just saved me from a scam I just started selling stuff on Facebook marketplace so thank you for the help
Cash only no shipping. Sold several items this way with no problems.
They almost got me with DHL😂
Yes, the same in the UK, latest one is wanting to pay by paypal, they then collect the item and complain to paypal, saying it was not posted or it was faulty so they can get their money back!
GOOD ON/ FOR YOU ...! ' GET A FU**** JOB...." those ' thieves ' over in India and Pakistan........notwithstanding, NO MORE...
You can always tell it's a scam or scambot when you get dozens of immediate responses with the same form letter question.
You’re i just got bunch of them today
Not even sue how they can do that since bots are supposed to be violation of erms/policy. Ai should be deleting those accts at 1st attempt
If private sellers had to upload a photo of a government issued photo ID held next to their face that should help to reduce the number of scammers on Facebook Marketplace.
Ha that would be a good idea
Good idea , but would they fake that to.
Phew almost got scammed before watching this, this really saved me thx so much
Glad it could help!
What if you’re shipping, what is the best payment method?
The biggest one is when I am trying to sell the phone and they are offering me extra to come to there house, I always try to meet them at the bank or somewhere crowded
we always meet at a public location.
Thanks for the tip I was selling some shoes but i had just seen and heard about this on your video and couple people texted me about my shoes but they wanted my number and verification code
Thanks for sharing... good info! Im getting ready to list dome items.
Zelle goes by your email or phone number which ever you want to go by. Apparently you can generate a QR code to send to people like Vemo
So what info do you give them so they can pay you thru pay pal?
you have to give them your pay pal address. thing is they can cancel the payment after you send the item. i won't do it.
I'm about to start selling stuff on Facebook Marketplace. This was helpful.
I only except cash in person. sellers are trying to scam buyers also, this happened to me this morning and I did not go for that BS
Cash is king!
Not always we can't generalized
Because I do only cash and local pick up I have always success with good buyers honesty is the key.
Cash is king!
good job advising but just because there are hoops doesn’t mean it’s a scam . i’m deployed so can’t do pick up so my family does the pick up but payment goes through paypal or some insured source
Guys you emphasise getting paid in cash. Can't the cash be counterfiet?
I have someone that said they want it but want to pick it up tomorrow but pay me now so i can mark it sold but wants my email address so they can pay "buyer and seller protected as a business deal"... No matter what i say to them they just keep saying that same thing and say they need my email to send thw money
Had one today want to send someone tomorrow - I said - first one here gets it.
You need to cover the six digit code request scam where they want you to give them the six digit code that was sent! BIG SCAM!
Thannk you so much for this
For shipping on fb marketplace do I have to ship the item physically or can someone else ship for me.
This is really helpful - thanks!
This drives me nuts too!!
Decided to only transact and ship through facebook. Hope that will eliminate most of the scams. Hopefully.
Can a seller see who viewed their item? I never asked anything about the item they were selling, I merely viewed the photo only. I then received messages and photos sent to me from them. I had no idea they could see who viewed the items. I haven't opened any of the messages.
Yes cash only, but theyre r counterfitters out there ,keep 1 of those' money marker pens with u . Even when having yard sales.🙂
Love your video! If you accept an offer but not payment can you cancel the offer without any backlash from marketplace? Thanks.
Hi !
Nice Video. Very resourceful.
I am seeking your valuable suggestion for the following matter-
I have listed advertisement in my Facebook Marketplace namely- `House Rent' in favour of my two Buyers, who ordered me.
Thank you for sharing
My account will always says pending with Zelle is that ok? Have you also used FB pay?
I was dealing with a scammer and unfortunately I didn't realize they were until I gave my number and email 🤦♂️
Should you meet someone to sell your item if they have a fake profile is that something to worry about
Thank you so much for this video, its very informative. my first time selling on fb marketplace
Thanks for watching! Hope it helps!
Love your shirt bro!
thanks!!
Do you have a video on pricing ?
I know we have talked about it in the past but we can do one soon!
We did talk about it recently! :) th-cam.com/video/9Dnns6bW7Eo/w-d-xo.html
What do they do with your address if they ask for it?
How do I prevent all ads from other users of Marketplace from showing on my FB feed? Thanks.
I also put a block on them after I turn the post into Facebook. Then third step is leave group then delete. Tells them ya know their deal.
Yes, absolutely! Get them off your pages 👍
I once send money to a seller through paypal (not connected through market place),
after 5 days i msg her and ask if she already send the item but now she is not responding my msg....
any idea what to do ?? thx bfore....
Great info, thank you!
What about if they joined Facebook this year? I feel like that’s a red flag.
Hard to say. I only set up my fb account this month because I want to use local marketplace (having a baby). Just have to use your best judgment I guess.
How about if they pay with fake cash? 🤷♀️
Why do people say they are interested go back and forth with time to pick it up and then all of sudden stop opening messages? This happens a lot to me.
Lonely people that are just looking for a response.
@@blackened4mewow that is really sad if true.
Thanks for the video. It was helpful.
I am trying to sell a car on FB Marketplace and I keep getting people asking for my phone number and address… Am showing car at my house but seems like people are just trying to get information out of me… Any Suggestions???
Meet at police station!
“I’ll have my daughter pick it up.” I checked the profile, and her daughter is about a middle schooler😂😂😂
😂
Same here! She said her son was driving over to pick it up. I looked at her profile and she looked barely old enough to drive! 😂 When l questioned her on it she told me she was 38 and her son was 18 🤦♀️
😅😅😅
i was selling my pc and mic but i recieved messages asking for my number so i just blocked them
So does Facebook have thier own payment system where there's records just in case you don't get payment or as a buyer if you don't get the item for shipped item. I'm trying to buy someth8ng at the moment it's in another city and I'm scared to send the money with no guarantee I'm getting my item.
yes they do take payment through Facebook. But customer service is a bear to get ahold of if something goes wrong.
I was scammed today and I sent a venmo payment but I am trying to delete messages from messenger so they dont have mailing address. Can you help?
Hey idk if I've been scammed because on their online they have all there games being sold as 15 but there's no images of irl stuff its all images from online , they've also sold all those games
I've asked them for any updates , they havnt replied:_)
Best thing about your message is your shirt but i like your advice thanks
Should I ignore the ones who ask for a message request through messenger regarding an item I’m selling?
Messenger is tied to Facebook - I just watch to make sure it is a real Facebook account and not a brand new one
If you go thru PayPal you tell them to send it To a friend or good and services?
You could do friends. But if there is any issues you don't have seller protection. Safer and the best way is to do goods and services.
𝐕𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭 I'm relieved that you're out there fighting these thugs. We must take all precautions to protect the elderly and the general public from these despicable scammers.
I can’t tell if this is a scam or not but someone is asking for my name and address so he can mail the money?
definitely a scam.
Someone asked me to post their rental place ad through my market place he asked I have to change my location in fb marketplace is that legal or scam ?
You guys are awesome. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Is there a scam relating to the use of a cashier's check for payment?
They can present counterfeit cashier's checks. If you take that for payment, have them meet you at the bank and go with you while you deposit it. It's simply best to accept cash.
I keep getting people asking for phone numbers only to send codes to see if we’re real ..
don't do it...
I know the code scam !
So I have this person who wants to but something from me they first offer if they could COD then a check then they want to buy it thru Facebook that’s the first scetchy things but a hour before I got a message from someone else with the same last name with more scetchy things I pretty sure it’s a scam but Im not sure?
I would go with your gut and not do it. If anything Cash only
Had salver Message about asking me my phone number and code to be real but I don't respond to that
That's a scam..
Thanks for the helpful tips!
I alway ask to meet at police station
And cash only! No payment or check 😅because so many scam
😂😂
cash is king!
