Listened to this on my last week of work before starting 1L - very comforting and illuminating.
This convinced me to send off some emails asking lawyers in my area if I could meet them for coffee and chat about their experiences.

Don't under estimate the advantages of sucking up to teachers who mainly have huge egos. This helped me get a 4.0 GPA. In my case this involved sitting at the front of lecture halls, pretending to be interested in their long digressions or borin subjects, letting them use me to booster up their images ( I stupied in a top law school in France and the lecturers liked to speak in English with me in front of the other students) and finally socializing with them. In one oral exam where one had to pull a question out of a hat; my choice was not to my liking and the Roman law prof. said :"You are one of my best students choose a second question" without penalizing me. Alaways be prepared for class as this makes an excellent impression and if you have time read your lecturers' books and or publications to be able to reflet their particular propensities and political preferrences.Surround yourself with the best students in the university for mutual support, notes when you are absent etc...extremely hard work is mandatory unless you are a genius. Sport is helpful to forge your will power and empty your mind. Make résumés of your notes each night while the information is still fresh. Impeccable organisation is essential. An active sex life can be a plus....law faculty students have very high sex drives because of their personnalities and stress levels. Act courteous to other students but don't get involved in any political or other extra curricular activities which divert time and energy. If you want to effect change in the world the priority is to get your degree. I would advise you to keep a neutral image; self assured but not arrogant. If you are stressed out with all the work don't let it show. People admire those who seem to be coping well without too much effort. Have a blast...your knowledge of the law will help you in more areas of your life than you can imagine; your relationship with the police, negotiating in everyday life, contracts etc...at cocktail parties when you get asked legal advice say "Your question warrants detailed analysis..call me later" unless you you have the answer down pat and want to discuss it. Do not ad lib when giving légal advice before you are fully qualified to do so.

Experience matters more than gpa. There are job candidates out there with low gpa's who have been extended job opportunities due to having a substantial amount of experience in the area of law their practice is in. On the other hand, there are candidates with high gpa's and no experience who are having a hard time securing employment in their desired area of law.
