  • The film Midsommar by Ari Aster is a rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish. The same director did the film Hereditary which we also have a movie group reaction of up on the channel. This reaction watch through was hilarious to experience as the movie goes to a lot of dark and emotional, sometimes violent, places.
What did you think of this film starring Florence Pugh? It is excellently shot, the cinematography is off the charts good. All of the scenes depicting hallucinations are visually amazing. Stick around after our reacts to watch our post movie discussion.

She deserved at least an Oscar nomination for Midsommar just as much as she did for Little Women. Don't get me wrong, she was fantastic as Amy March but there was something more raw in her performance in Midsommar that deserved just as much if not more praise.

I'm not sure if you want a description of the scene that sets it up so basically it involves the implied endangerment of a child but no actual harm being done, it feels more like a performance than anything but you can never be for sure w these folks and it's still distressing. That scene ends w Dani looking very rattled and Christian smiling, kinda fascinated.
Then it's just them two and she tells him all of it feels wrong and they need to leave, he tells her it's only bc they haven't been exposed to that sort of stuff before and they need to get acclimated, she says she doesn't want to get acclimated she wants to *GO* and that's when she learns he's doing his thesis on this so he's not leaving either way. That prompts her to call them "opportunistic anthropology students" and question why they think the cult would trust them w any of what's happening since "they're doing pagan rituals, ppl are jumping off cliffs, they depend on no one knowing about this ever".
Anyways then he tells her "i invited you and i don't regret that but i'm here for a reason" when not only did he find that reason like 3 hours ago by copying his friend despite him practically begging him not to, but he also was entirely banking on her *not accepting his invite* in the first place. She asks him if he loves her anymore, says that they've been in the devaluation phase of their relationship for a while and the next step is discard and he asks her to not look at their relationship through a psychology lens. She says "you've been trying to pull away and i've been in denial" to which he says very passive aggressively "please babe give yourself some credit, you've got it all figured out" even though she's literally right. He then says that her gifts to him only remind him that he's not doing enough for her in the relationship and he believes she has ulterior motives with them, especially since she gave him flowers on her birthday after he didn't get her anything. She asks if he's being serious to which he responds "okay fine, play the wounded party, again. you're just a self-denying altruist and i'm a paranoid dick. you don't have a conniving bone in your body". She asks what he thinks she's conniving, apparently he just thinks she is and feels locked into her debt every time she does something just because, he doesn't think it's ever "just because". She says she was being kind and he responds with "okay fine i'm the asshole" which immediately gets a "nobody's the asshole" from her and he says "i clearly am. you selflessly give me flowers and i feel trapped" and he walks away irritated while she's asking him if he's seriously leaving
I think a transcription is already enough to get the picture but his actual tone and body language during the scene really drives it home. Hope this helped somehow

This film has nothing to do with female empowerment. Also, the toxic relationship between Dani and Christian is nothing but a smoke screen. Florence Pugh is such a gem, you should watch her in Fighting with my family, too... on the other hand, IMHO the main character of Midsommar is Christian. The inbred community needs new blood to impregnate one of the girls while the May Queen can be anybody who wins the dancing contest. Dani was not even a part of Pelle's plan, her invitation was merely out of mercy to ease her pain. Midsommar is the story of Christian, told from Dani's point of view.

Just to move the ignorance out of the way, what yall are calling "jazz hands" is actually a pretty common alternative to clapping your hands. It's used a lot in the deaf community or in other situations where clapping isn't appropriate (mostly because the noise can be prejudicial to autistic people or even hinder the public's ability to undertand what is being said by a spokesperson). It helps to create a welcoming and more inclusive environment for everyone. In my country we use it a lot when organizing in protests, or other movements that require gathering and organizing a lot of people in an open space.

Also, the one time someone claps in the movie, it’s in the face of someone on drugs, who freaks out when it happens. If you’re part of a cult where drug use is traditional, maybe you’d avoid clapping or other things that would startle someone on those drugs.
