  • This film, about protective services for the aging, dramatizes the story of one recluse who, like many older people, attempts to be self-sufficient long after she is able. Not until she becomes physically disabled does the community have an opportunity to extend to her the various benefits now available for the aged. Twenty or 30 other older individuals are examined in the film, all in need of physical, psychological, or legal assistance.

I remember the first time I realized that old people were once young...someone's grandparent, parent, child, infant...it was one of the biggest revelations of my life. It's very sad that I figured it out too late to really appreciate my grandparents and learn about their lives, although I loved them very much. I have made a point to make history real and relevant to my child, he loves learning about the past, and how to make the present and future better because of it!

The truth in this old film is still relevant today. If you know an older person, a relative, etc. Don't forget them. They didn't forget you when you were young. Once they were young, vibrant and outgoing. Now is the time to love and care for them.

It’s very sad that as humans we do not treat our elders as the treasures that they are. I am so very thankful for my family and friends. I am older, an believe the internet, being able to talk to and see my family, though I’m 4,000 miles away - is wonderful!

Everyone in this film has passed away by now, except possibly for the boy acting as a neighbor child.

As a caregiver who has elderly loved ones in my life who I love very much, it is amazing to me how relevant this film is, even today. My mom is a stubborn, independent, 92 year old woman Who is surrounded by a loving family, And it is a real challenge to find the balancing act between allowing someone to have independence while at the same time needing to remind the person to use safety Techniques and equipment like walkers. We have all seen what happens when my mom, and other elderly individuals in our world, has a fall. Falls are terrible setbacks for an independent elderly person and we want my mom to remain as independent and healthy as possible.

We treat our elderly like crap in our society. All those elderly were once young, but there is no guarantee you will live to be old. But you can do nothing to stop the aging process, all you teens who think you are cool, could one day be that elderly person who can no longer care for themselves, helpless as an infant. Nursing homes where negeclt and despair are rampet, could be your new home.

There are also old people who treat young people like crap and act as if they are all lazy and entitled, when I have met old people that are just like that. Are all old people like that? Certainly not. Do young people often generalize all old people? Of course. I think their needs to be some understanding between the two. Not all old people are bigoted and small minded, not all young people are lazy and entitled.

This video was made the year I was born. I am in my late 50's now and my Mom is in a nursing home now. I am making the best of my time while I can still do everything I'm capable of doing. If you are young now, don't waste these years.

Nursing homes are the worst. I spent 3 months in a rehab place to help me walk again. Younger people should not think that an old person will prefer living in a nursing home regardless of how nice it may be. Loss of autonomy , multiple people dwelling, others telling you what to do.

Depends. Some old people enjoy it. My grandma used to voluntarily intern herself for a handful of months every year.

"Her daughter died in childbirth, her only son was killed at the Bulge (Battle of the Bulge)... she has no other family and no friends...she lives in poverty" with not even enough money to eat properly just broke my heart. Later in the film when she started to cry, tears sprang to my eyes. I've always respected and enjoyed being with, talking with older people. My favorite Sunday School class back in 1966, when I was a senior in high school, was the Senior Ladies Class because I loved their wisdom and their stories about their lives. My mother was just the BEST and I am so glad I had her with me until she was nearly 101 and still in good health for her age.

I can relate, try joining a local senior's group, once the pandemic is over. It's fun. There's trip, get to gethers and those who like bingo. I've started learning to do floral arrangements. I force myself to take walks early in the mornings. Hun we ain't giving up yet. I've learned to gone on zoom and I make calls on a certain day of the week.

Christians Grandma gives good advice. IT can be done and is so worth it. Find your interests and others who feel similar. Perhaps your friends could invite you and introduce you to more friends. Margaret, YOU are worthy of friendship and closeness. Some local community buses are available, usually able to go the the Community Center. Be well !
