    Well presented TU.. I’m a retired Pro Photographer at age 86..I used 3 Hasselblad cameras and appreciated variable nd filters . Pleased to see that your DJI experience has taken you into the filter field..Drones are in my future, especially this one .. Thank you again

    Great tip. I ordered the filters and used them on my last shot. Result: Awesome - No stuttering footage, everything very smooth! The advantage in compare to fixed ND-filters is, that you can adjust them quickly to actual light situation.

    I do very little video mainly shots and I've always liked them crisp and clear I don't use the nd's very often.

    Thanks for another excellent video. My issue with variable ND filters is that they create more vignette issues than the fixed filter. Moreover, the vignette with a variable ND is often stronger in one corner than the other which creates more work in post. It was noticeable when you were demonstrating the effect with the camera you were shooting with. That said, the convince of the variable ND is awesome. Love your vid’s!

    I really don't like that overly crisp look that you get too often when not using NDs, so I tend to use them on most sunny days. I just had my first crash and I lost my ND64. I was looking at variable NDs since they're so convenient. Loved the video, thanks.

    I’m rather new to the drone world and making videos with ND filters, but I’ve been taking photos for 10+ years now and I have to say ND filters are a staple for my camera bag and soon to be my air2s for capturing that perfect shot/video. Thank you for sharing this video and captivating me to go further into the drone world!

    I use ND filters on almost every flight with my Autel Evo II 8K. (No filter in dim light). They are great. I will be buying the Air 2s very soon, and this video SOLD me on the PolarPro Variable ND. Thanks!

    Most VND filters I've used tend to introduce a vignette or X pattern of darker zones when compared to a standard ND (especially at the higher stops). I think I see a darker top right corner in your footage here. PolarPro are the mutt's nuts when it comes to filters though so I'd love to give these a go and see if the technology has improved.

    New pilot, DJI Air 2S.. awesome drone! I got what I thought was great footage only to realize I had used the incorrect stock ND filter, lots to learn. Been following you for a while, demos are always hugely insightful, being able to adjust the ND ‘on the fly’ 👌🏼 thanks for the great content!

    I'm a theater lighting designer and use ND filters (aka gels) in my lights all the time to maintain color temp vs. fading the lights. Fading incandescent stage lights brings an amber shift to the color. this video is helpful to me as I learn more about drones. Thanks.

    Just ordered the PolarPro VND's! Adding the kit to my ND8/PL, ND16/PL, and ND32/PL filter quiver. Love the effective quality of the brand. Thanks a ton for the smart content! Much gratitude, T :-)

    What is your thoughts around the vignetting that the filter's cause? I haven't tested the PL's yet, but the variable NDs definitely add a bunch of vignetting especialling towards the larger numbers (and it looks like that was happening throughout your drone shot on this video too).
    Have you found a way to avoid this, or an easy work flow to remove it?

  • @Drone-Pilot
    @Drone-Pilot 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Filters are a must with video and photography to get what you need from it, my daughter is a photographer and she has explained so much to me, but get a drone up in the air and things change especially with the polarising filters, these can (when set up just right) cut though the glare on the ocean to reveal what is below.
    Anyway I carry on too much, thanks for the video

    Awesome and Excellent Tutorial Video on using Variable Neutral Density Filters. Like you Aldryn, I like the variable filters, because you don't have to constantly change the filter before you get the right one. I use filters on my Digital SLR Cameras, Nikon D7000, and Canon 60D. I'm currently searching for a clean Nikon D850 Full Frame Camera, and searching to purchase a clean Mavic 2 Pro, to get my business going. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!!

    If you are trying to get an action shot of one of the surfers, I’m guessing the higher shutter speed is better though? The blur looks more natural when viewing the video, but is not always the best option for what you might need. Or is the slower shutter speed better all around?

    Fantastic post Aldryn, really enjoyed it. The whole ND filter thing is a minefield for new users. I have a variable set for my pocket 2 and they are great - much easier to manage.
    The actual result (motion blur) is quite subtle, I am not sure that everyone gets that it has nothing to do with colour and everything to do with movement. I have a post I'd like to send to you of how bad some advice on youtube can be.....
    Yours is spot on though. I have the air 2s and am enjoying the heck out of it. Keep up the good work! Hi from the UK.

    Thanks Aldryn for a really useful comparison showing how the ND filters changes things. However, I must be a barbarian (LOL) because frankly both the no-filter/sharp and filter/blurry video looked OK to me. I'd be happy with either. Maybe the motion blur looks better with people, or vehicles, or something?

  • @digitalman269
    @digitalman269 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I always learn something from you. Thank you for doing what you do. I've always slapped any old ND filter on my cameras because I was told way back when that they were used to "protect" the expensive lens from getting scratched. Today, you taught me about motion blur and 1/60th of a second frame rate being ideal in bright sunlight.

    • @stronald
      @stronald 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For protection only, you're better off using a UV filter. In low light, you really DON'T want a ND filter on your lens.
