Mazda MX-5 ND (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Mazda MX-5 - the World Car of the Year 2016 award winner - is all about fun: front engine, rear-wheel drive, two seats in the middle, and a rag top, which you can fold in a couple of seconds. No wonder MX-5/Miata is the best-selling roadster with around 1 million examples sold worldwide. The Japanese took a classic British roadster concept, and made it reliable. How does the fourth generation Mazda MX-5 compare to the previous models? It's definitely smaller and lighter, than the third generation, which I happen to own. MX-5 ND is capturing the spirit of the original NA. But is just a fun toy, or is the MX-5 an everyday car?

    I really like the way you present the car! It's one of the best reviews on YT in my opinion - a few jokes and the positive music underlined my good impression. Maybe it's also caused by the way you're speaking ;) You are also one of a few other reviewers who seems to have more than basic knowledge about it... I don't need someone who just tells me about facts and figures from Mazdas website
    All in all: Keep going! Glad to see new videos of you - although I was just interested in the MX5 :)

    This is the best review of an ND MX-5. You touch upon so many aspects which impact you as an owner and driver, which all other reviewers completely avoid. After seeing many of your other reviews, I can safely say I trust your opinion most at this point!

    Great video, and well presented.
    I was considering upgrading my rusting old 1.8 NA with a base model 1.5 ND, but ended up buying a very low-mileage fully spec'ed 2.0 NC LE 2nd hand in absolutely mint condition. I did do some suspension mods because the NC is quite 'whallowy'. It's an upgrade I'd really recommend for the NC as it makes it feel more direct and fun (the LSD also helps there).
    Test driving the base 1.5 ND, I found it a bit 'whallowy' too and I wasn't too fond of the super-light electronic steering rack either, but I thought that little 1.5 is a great engine for the ND and I loved the light weight feel of the car and the looks. If I'd have gone for the 1.5 ND (which is still a totally awesome car), I'd probably do something about that suspension too though..
    I'm still happy with my choice for the 2nd hand NC '3rd gen LE' though. It's a thing of beauty that still puts a smile on my face driving it every day.
    I still have very fond memories of my old NA (still the purest one of them all, a true modern classic), but you just can't go wrong with any MX5.

    I've got an n/c 2L soft top with aftermarket wheels and sports exhaust. My last car was a Jag XK8 convertible. I'm over the moon with my MX5 and it's great to drive, it's got enough of what I need to make up for missing my previous car. This came as a very pleasant surprise because I thought I'd need a hell of a lot of money to do that-maybe even Aston money-but no, these cars are exceptional!!👍😎

    My rust bucket of a Triumph Spitfire 1500 i used to own back in the 1980s, was one of the most enjoyable cars ive ever owned.
    Not very reliable, and not very well built, but so much fun at safe driving speeds.
    Roll forward to Sep 2021, and i took ownership of my brand new 1500cc Sport Venture edition MD2
    A modern, totally reliable recreation of the Triumph Spitfire, a recipe made in heaven.

      @@MarekDrivesENG My 1980 W reg Inca Yellow Spitfire 1500, was my dream car, but tiny sports cars of that era, were seldom reliable, and were not built to last.
      Im not mechanically minded, so it visited our local garage, on a regular basis.
      I have fond memories of driving it around the backroads of the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire, in the warm summer weather.
      My MX5 is tucked away for six months of the year, in my garage.
      I sit in it on a regular basis, thinking of the adventures i will have when April arrives

    I have had no problem with the infotainment consol controls as I use both hands to steer not one but then anyone daft enough to strain the soft top by putting it up while moving is obviously going to be using the free hand for everything but steering

    Great review, I'm the lucky owner of an ND 2 litres an often I can see reviewers complaining about the position of the infotainment controls, my car has the manual gearbox and I can say that not even once in the 3000km I've done I touched this controls to the point that it will change anything on the screen.. it may be because you are wearing a thick jacket?, as for the noise inside the cabin. well.. I did travel on the freeway for a few hours and I found it quite noisy, good excuse to pump up the volume of the bose system!!

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +andyenmitubo I like to rest my elbow and hold the shifter low. It's a habit from my NC. In the ND I touched the controller a number of times during the week I spent with the car, so I consider it a possible fault worth mentioning. As for the noise level, it's not a Z4, but compared to NC it's noticeably quieter.

    A very nice review :)
    But for me, the issue with the boot opening size remains, it's very nice in NB that you can put in larger objects (like golf clubs, or anything that long), the opening on ND is like a small straw basket :/ Also, I don't see anybody mentioning the cheap and flimsy sunvisors, they are not something I use often, but it's realy a disgrase how cheap and plastic they look and feel.
    Still, great achivement with the engine, consumption, weight, noise... :)

  • @bingoberra18
    @bingoberra18 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have an NA and NB, NA have great heater but NB is hopeless. The problem, at least with the first two models is that you can only choose between having the fan on the front windows or side windows which means the other will get misted if you get in wet. NB gives a more low down, "inside" feeling than NA, and the soft top has better sound deadening. But all in all they both have their charm and I dont want to sell any of them.

    • @petarpopovic3306
      @petarpopovic3306 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bingoberra18 I have an NB, it does have small vents that blow air on side windows when the settings are for the windshield, but they are not too strong. Sometimes when I want to de-fog the side windows, I turn the middle vents upwards so they blow some hot air towards the windshield too, but in general if I keep fan speed at 1 or 2 and the vents chosen to "windows" i don't get fog on neither, nor on side windows nor on the windshield. Maybe your hoses are off so the sideblowers don't work on the "windows" settings?

  • @82raptor

    I think the NB is the best of all MX-5's!

    As someone who would like to by the car for everyday use I think the safety systems make sense in the Miata as they do in any other car. Especially the blind spot monitoring makes sense to me as I found that the blind spot is quite an issue with the top up. Looking over the shoulder is useless then. Takes some of my confidence with this car away. Unfortunately, the blind spot monitoring is only available in the top specced bigger motor variant with I-Eloop + you have to take the Tech package. I don't like that :/ I am hoping that the PRHT version is coming this fall and the blind spot is not that bad any more.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +xyzphyl As I said: I like my safety systems in a city hatchback, but not in a sort-of-sports-car. When MX-5 is enthusiastically (like it should be) the systems beep all the time. I know they have to meet safety regulations and score high i Euro NCAP/NHTSA tests, and this is why they offer these systems. On high spec models they can bury the extra costs in all the other equipment you get. This is one of the reasons why I'm happy with my NC.

    • @xyzphyl
      @xyzphyl 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Marek Drives Well there will be many times when I just want to get from A to B, maybe I'm stressed out or tired. I really like to drive it enthusiastically, but that will not be every day. In your GT86 review you pointed out it is not the best choice for daily driving because it constantly pokes you. Please try to apply that thinking to the MX-5. There will definitely be times when I just want to get from A to B and feel safe while driving. One can always turn off the systems or just buy an entry model that has no blind spot warning etc. if one does not want those.
      Good reviews btw^^ You are always able to point out things other reviewers simply do not see.

    Great review! Very nice indeed, well done. NC owner here too, yours phrt is 2.0 right? How much less weight is the ND, does it feel more agile and nimble than the NC? Eventually if you had a cost free choice to drive whatever of the two home, what would be your choice?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TBH I think NC is the pinnacle of MX-5. It's usable enough. ND is too small, and the only real benefit is damping, which I suppose I could achieve in my NC by replacing stock Bilsteins with something better.

    Nice review Marek. Shame you didn´t review the 1.5..suppose the 2 liters will be the best selling in your country, Here in Portugal...as the 2 liters will cost as much as 40.000 euros...it will be the 1.5.....the one I bought.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Bruno Corte I asked the press office about it, but they didn't order any 1.5s for the press fleet. In Poland people who buy MX-5 go for top spec anyway, because if they can afford (usually) a third car, they won't pay attention to 4k euro difference.

    • @Posidaon
      @Posidaon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bruno Corte Is that cause you have heavy taxation on bigger engines in portugal? In Greece for the 2 liter engine cars we pay close to a thousand euros per year in road taxes, i don't even want to talk about what happens on even bigger engines...so the 1.5 is the solution for here too!

      inspectorchicken I know. I think having them behind you, as well as in the passenger footwell is not the best option. I tend to reach for my drink every now and then, while driving. I realise MX5 is a fun car, but it's also my daily driver. It's just a little nuisance.

    I've just been reading about the Best Cars Awards and I'm a bit amazed: what happens with Mazda in Poland? Mazda2, 3 and 6 among the finalists, so quite different from the rest of Europe. But curiously the MX-5 is not in the Top 3 of its category.

    • @MarekDrives

      +Ángel M Best Car Awards according to which magazine? Sport cars in Poland are even more niche, than everywhere else, and I would expect people enough with money to buy a fun car to go up market. Middle class can barely afford an MX-5.
