University isnt all practical, depending on the university, you will do like 2 / 3 days a week of practical and or 2 / 3 days of written work in a week so its not just classroom. When you go on placement its about 2 days placement 1.5 days classroom and 1.5 practical.
This simplicity and so positivity about all others could be risky and dangerous. Please keep in your mind the cause of death of Sultan Nouru ddeen Zungi
Informative and honest - refreshing to hear someone speaking from experience. Welldone Ayaz. Can you tell me - in order to go on to a Master Critical Care Paramedic course, do you need to have obtained your primary degree in Paramedicine in University, or will they accept the service route?
A critical care paramedic is usually a progression role from within an ambulance service, so regardless of what route you took to become a paramedic, you would have to be a Paramedic first and work for a service first before progressing on to critical care. This generally requires a few years in the role and experience. I hope that makes sense
Now that the ambulance services generally do it as a BSc if you don't already have a BSc and have a foundation degree for example I imagine you would have to do do a top up to a Bsc. So the answer is No it doesn't matter which route you took
Don't forget, you can't save everyone. You'll rock up to a job, do everything prefect and the patient will still die, it's just the way it is. You need to be able to communicate, not just with the patient, but your partner as well. Communication is key in just about any job today. Talk to the patient the way you would want to be dealt with if the roles were reversed. You're going to go to lots of jobs at 1am where you'll be picky up little old granny off the floor, it's just the way it is. Also lots of drug overdoses, depending on your location these jobs are going to take up a bit of your shift. Domestic violence and MVA's, you're going to see it all. You'll need a black sense of humour or sense of humour in general. This is not the job not to have one. You're going to go to jobs where you just want to ask them "Why", why stick that glass coke bottle up your arse, and now it's broken and your arsehole is bleeding from all that glass. Also, you're going to get those frequent flyers. Those people that call an ambulance almost every single day. It's frustrating yes, but you just need to deal with them like you would anybody else. It's not a job for everyone, but it's a rewarding career and if you do your degree in Australia, UK, USA, NZ, South Africa or Canada, you can pretty much work anywhere in the world. Unsure about Israel, but I know their paramedics are trained to a high level as well. And the last thing, as with communication, speak up. You're going to go to some very shit jobs. It might not effect you straight away, but over time it will. Get help and don't bottle it all up. We all break at some point.
Thanks so much for this! I want to be a paramedic so badly, so when I found it there is a way to do it in an apprenticeship type way I was thrilled because I’m 28, have a mortgage and already have a degree so I can’t afford to go back to university. I can’t seem to find many student training paramedic jobs, maybe I’m not searching very well or maybe there aren’t many available? I don’t know but I really hope I can do this
look for jobs as an Emergency Care Assistant, that’s the job below paramedic, then you can apply to train as Paramedic after a few years working as an ECA
I'm 35, been a civil engineer for about 12-13 years. Finally decided to change careers and I've just applied for an emergency care assistant role! So excited and nervous about it!! 😁😬😁
I'm a 43 year old male who spent 12 years within the Armed Forces ( Military ). I trained as a medic and was continually trained for 5 years during that career. My question is after leaving the Forces is, am I too old? Do I have key transferable skills? Is it possible for me to have a career in the Ambulance service?
43 is no way too old! I know of people in their 50's and even 60's train to be paramedics. The military meic experience will definitely help too, but it's the academic criteria they will also consider when your applying. Best to check with the service your applying with and what their academic requirements are 👍
Amazing Video and lots of interesting information, your doing a great job saving lives. Got a few questions. Do voluntary paramedics need to drive or can they become paramedics without driving as I don’t drive. I am planning on volunteering for a private hire at first. For example St Johns Ambulance or BM Ambulance to get some experience so I can get all the skills I need for becoming a voluntary paramedic. Stay safe Ayaz and all the other paramedic hero’s.
