I'm pretty handy in a lot of ways, but I've never done this and honestly, probably never will. That being said, I can truly appreciate and respect people who have mastered this. Very cool!
I've always wanted to get into gun smithing but as an engraver. I've enjoyed designs on old western pistols of sorts.

I certainly don't have the dexterity and patience to engrave anything but it looks so awesome. A great way to embellish simple objects. True skills and craftsmanship. Hat down

Years ago say fifty whilst on holiday in England I went to the "ancien limestone horse" the one that sits on the whole hillside and at a near by village I step in an old world silver smiths shop and bought a tanker pewter and the old man asked if I wanted me initials engraved on it. I said how much he said thanks to you yanks 'Im not speaking German so it's on me. Was a nice touch. Wow quick and absolutely beautiful old English script. I was wanting but life got in me way.
I’ve bin wanting to learn to do this since I was 11, im 15 now and am going to get a rifle passed down to me once im 18, going to engrave it and till then I’ll work on smaller projects and learn with this guidance program, thank you!

Do you cover engraving on rounded surfaces such as jewelry and working with soft metals such as brass and copper? I’m really interested in learning how to engrave? There’s something so personal in doing the work by hand and presenting someone with a fine work of art you created.
03 mths later, how are things for you with the desire to create good engraving pieces? If this is your full/part time income source how long do you think it will be before you recover your investment made into purchasing the entire engraving paraphernalia. Would be great if you could reply. tia

How did you get the design on to the metal plate before you start engraving?
Various design transfer methods made easier through printer after creating on pc/reference material.
Some engravers have skills to draw directly on metal.
I have done leather carving for many years. It seems like the two are similar as far as pushing into visual depths. Is it? Will one help the other? Silver engraving is something I have always been interested in learning. Where do I start? How expensive to just the basics? I have already invested over 10k just in my leather carving tools (no stamps) over the 40 plus years.
LOL yes you and me both brother. 😂 Me a keen knifemaker h8bbyist starting on leather sheaths turned leathercrafter as enjoyed it and everyone kept bugging me for belts especially and like book covers sheaths cases etcetc way more than wanted my knives haha... t hen saw carving patterns and under a year hooked, yep tens of k's easy on stamps and everything too lol, probably several times over lol, I'm full on carving and tooling traditional westerm floral patterns and more at high level and drawing up most the patterns myself even (found that hardest things to do well probably)
But yes their scrolls and floral work certainly has many similarities with leather carving/tooling and obviously share many foundationL principles and theory andphilosophy etc etc.
And yeah I've no doubt that if you can draw/design and carving and tool and do finish work on western floral type leathercarving well and really understand the basic underlying principles than surely if got the proper toops etc you could pick up the majority of basic engraving skills in no time and lot quicker than someone with no related experience.

I'm not sure I mean I think a might order a basic set and maybe this guys basic beginner lesson and just learn enough to have it there if I do need it sometime......tbh I'm just not really rushing to jump in deep to yet ANOTHER deep complex costly and never ending rabbit hole hobby lol.

Unless you have skill with tools to carve over existing/blurred design, you may well regret attempting this as high level skill is required to do so.

Would anybody be willing to bless a newbie with a old used engraver, equipment? Looking to get into the hobby any help would be great.
If someone would be willing to pass along old used cheap equipment after becoming more advance could really help others.

@@haydent9354 too soft. It’s stainless steel, nickel, copper, or brass. All make good practice materials fir different applications.

How much are your tools?
Be prepared to put aside 4k to 10k dollars (depending on how many of related accessories you wush to buy). This is not a low cost activity, although similar equipment is available which claim to match the best on sale.
