Cologne Dom: The cathedral was more or less "finished" WAY BEFORE those 632 years but since the soft stone has to be replaced CONSTANTLY it will probably never be finished !
In fact both the Cologne Dome and the HIGHER Ulmer Münster still have their own MASTER BUILDER overseeing the constant replacement of parts like FIALEN or GORGOYLES etc etc.

The beer glasses for "Kölsch" (Cologne beer specialty) only contain 0.2 liters. This seems strange but it isn't. The strategy behind it is that you can drink slowly without the beer really getting warm. When the waitress in Cologne, called "Köbes", sees that the glass is empty, you will automatically be served a new beer and it will be cold again. If you don't want any more beer, put the beer mat on the glass. I find this approach very clever. 😀

      this is real risky though.
the glass stays full somehow despite the amount i drink....

Lederhosn are not German, but Bavarian only, introduced at the end of the 19th century to propagate Bavarian national sentiment. Dirndl originated as fashion of the Munich upper class in the mid 19th century, loosely based at the traditional Sunday clothes of their maids, in Bavarian called dirndls, coming from the rural area around Munich. Nowadays however some traditional women clothes (sometimes slightly modified with e.g. lower necklines to be more Dirndl-like and fashionable) are sometimes also called Dirndl in Bavaria and Austria.
The Cologne beer is called Kölsch and served in small 0.2l glasses called Stange (pole), but often with automatic refills (each refill is however marked and has to be paid later) - this way the beer will not go stale while drinking.
10:35 It was less about organizing the construction than about funding it. Different parts of the cathedral were built 1248-1277, 1265-1322, 1320-1360 and so on, until in 1528 no money was left, times became economically harder for Cologne and also Reformation caused political turbulences in the whole German Kingdom of the Holy Roman Empire. For centuries the landmark of the Cologne skyline was the wooden crane atop of one of the tower stumps (see for example de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:K%C3%B6ln_-_Koelhoffsche_Chronik_Agrippina_of_Coellen,_fol._30,_1499,_RBA.jpg). In 1823 some art and architecture enthusiasts campaigned for finishing the cathedral according to the ancient plans they allegedly had found, and they won the support of the Prussian king, who was in search of ways to reconciliate the Catholic Rhinelanders with the Protestant Prussian rule over the Rhine Province (and was also fascinated by medieval vibes). So he gave some money, others followed suit, and between 1842 and 1880 the towers and other missing elements were completed.
Ulm Minster has a similar history, with the difference that it was never a cathedral (= the seat of a bishop). Construction started in 1377, funded by citizens themselves who had become wealthy by trading. Multiple architects changed plans over time according to changing fashion and for their own glory, which led then to static problems and reconstructions. In 1530 the citizens held a referendum about converting to Protestantism, which was won by Protestantism with a majority of 7/8. The citizens were then asked to remove the art and altars they had donated, because they would otherwise be destroyed in the following "Bildersturm" (iconoclasm), because Protestantism did not allow images or figures of saints and similar things. In 1543 construction was stopped shortly before completion because of political conflicts, but also due to missing funding. In 1844 construction was restarted, including a lot of renovation after 300 years. In 1885 the completion of the tower was started, which was finished in 1890, now about 4 meters taller than the twin towers of Cologne Cathedral and by this the highest church tower in the world.

In the 1950s and 1960s Lederhosen we’re very popular everyday wear for boys in Germany (not just Bavaria) as they were sturdy. They didn’t require as much washing as other trousers and didn’t rip that easily during rough playing.

Humor, at least for me as a German, is also changing.
What you found funny as a 20/30 year old, you find shallow and underground as a 40/50 year old and you want to tape the mouth of that particular comedian shut. While there are other comedians whose manner and wordplay still inspire laughter 40+ years later.

I don‘t share the lady‘s opinion about the humor cliché. Long time before WW2 there was the rumor that Germans are very serious. Look at the time period of Bismarck and the „Kaisers“ for example.
Sometimes I think the media always want to compare everything with WW2 when it‘s about Germany.
And who is that lady? She isn‘t even German but talks like an expert.
    Very self-presenting.

"Thou shall not......" compare international flights with the German train system (DB), lol. Why?
I am absolutely with you - each and every public vehicle may be late or out of schedule for some reasons, and in general it is not a big thing. BUT:
The "Deutsche Bahn" (German Railway) has been ruined by missing maintenance and investments for about decades. And now we are at the point, where "being late" is nearly more normal for a train than being in time. Or at least they are cancelled. So no - being on a late train does not automatically mean you will reach your destination because it might happen that your connection would have had a certain point of changing the trains. And when you reach the train station where this should happen, and you are late, you may realize that "the last train to your destination has already gone for today". Which means you are stuck there, will need a place to sleep or stay awake until the next morning, and it is even not guaranteed that you can spend that time in the train station because in small villages they might be closed over night!
And suffering from the unreliable system since years and years (being a nation which celebrates punctuality so much), made us Germans complain about the DB a lot! :D

5:16: The idea of Kölsch is that you always have a fresh beer, because it gets flat very quickly. If you are in a pub in Cologne, and your glass is empty, you will get a new one without asking Unless you signalize that you don't want any more beer by putting the coaster on the glass.

a Dirndli a classical bavarian, south german thing, not common at any other places: there are many classic German costumes that are very impressive for understanding German culture. there are many different cultures. each one also has its own brewing culture, the German alc.-free beer is common in the middle European place

About these Lederhosen: I'll compare Bavarian Lederhosen with a cowboy outfit from Texas, for example. Cowboy hat or Stetson, jeans, checked shirt, boots with spurs on them, scarf and a belt with cartridges and holster with a pistol. Howdy 🤠...
Ok, that may be appropriate for certain occasions, but normal citizens probably don't walk around with it every day in Los Angeles, New York, Washington or Vancouver Island - not even in Texas...
And we don't wear lederhosen in Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg or anywhere else... Maybe every now and then at the time of Oktoberfest when we go to a local festival that doesn't take place in Munich. But I have never owned lederhosen, nor do I know anyone who owns them. I think the comparison is obvious enough, right?
    Greetings from Northern Germany ♥️🇩🇪

Alcoholism is (in my opinion) most of the time more of a symptom for a wide range of mental health issues.

  • @RustyDust101
    @RustyDust101 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

There's a German saying "Alkohol löst keine Probleme" = "alcohol doesn't solve any problems".
Some witty bastard added "aber es gibt einem dafür jede Menge neue interessante." = "but it does give you a whole lot of interesting new ones." 😁
So yeah, many Germans do partake relatively regularly, but only in moderation. The central idea is more the taste and refreshment as well as the companionship instead of getting wasted. It may be a far later goal of getting slghtly buzzed but not dead drunk. Solitary drinking binges may occur, but for those the moniker of alcoholism does fit. Yes, alcoholism is still a factor but to a far lesser degree.
People are also allowed to take a drink at a far younger age. The legal age for beer and wine is 16, both to buy and consume. Under parental supervision the age of 14 is legal for those two types of drinks, but again, in moderation. At 18 anything goes. So the teens will have had two years during which to get their experiences with alcohol in while still somewhat under parental oversight.
