  • If you see this one issue, DO NOT buy a Used Porsche or you will regret it and have to pay upto £15,000 for an engine rebuild. The issue is not well known but is called over revs.
    Porsche Over Revs commonly occur on Porsche 911 996 997 & sometimes 991. For Cayman & Boxster it is the 986, 987 & sometimes the 981 range.

    Dude your posts are getting far too predictable now ie that device you are trying to sell and the advice you are giving is quite lame to be honest.. I have watched quite a few of your vids about ugrades that need a lot more work besides fitting yet you mention nothing?? For example lowering springs?? Ipd Plenum??

    If you are going to make a video about over-rev on a Porsche, you should first familiarize yourself with how to read the print. You say how many times the engine has been over-reved. It's wrong. The number on the printout stands for the number of ignitions that have occurred in that speed range. There are three ignitions at one revolution on a 6-cylinder engine. In other words, the number 2, on range 6, cannot be correct. The sensor that measures the speed of the engine, the crankshaft sensor, only measures full revolutions. Small numbers that appear on ranges 5 and 6 are therefore considered incorrect reading. This engine is therefore most likely perfect. Do you have documentation on how many engines have failed due to over-rev? I doubt it. Have you heard of anyone at all? You are conducting erroneous intimidation propaganda with such videos, and should delete it.

      So you’re suggesting over reving an engine is a non-issue ?
      Are you serious ?
      So you’re in the middle of purchasing a GT3 RS and the owner mentions he really hates to get rid of it but he just couldn’t get the hang of downshifting during his weekly track days at Sears Point and was tired of watch that tach scream past the redline every other lap due to missing third and jamming it into 1st………
      No worries, ma man……here’s the $224,000…….
      Bullshit.

    I tell everyone who is thinking about purchasing a Porsche to have an indy Porsche Shop do a Pre-Purchase Inspection done, money well spent. Also, those who are looking at TIPTRONIC and PDK gear box Porsches need not worry about over revs.

    Even if the first 2 gears do t do damage, if I saw that there were multiple over revs it would tell me the car lived a hard life and would probably run away. Just because you own a sports car doesn’t mean you have to beat it every time you drive it.

    Great video and something that did indeed slip my mind when buying my car to check! Luckily I've had it for 4 years, so I'm pretty safe to say all is OK! Although its a shame you can't check it on the 986 Boxster.
    I personally do think if a car has been over in ranges 3-6 - to just walk away from the car. There are lots of different cars available to buy from imo to buy something that could potentially be a headache in the future due to this.

  • @FredLarracuente
    @FredLarracuente 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have the Foxwell 510pro and can confirm that it cannot read overrevs on a 03 996 (C4S). I got mine at 50k miles and now has 98K so, if the previous owner(s) over-reved the car, it's pretty irrelevant by now in my case, LOL. Good video.

  • @robertking7584
    @robertking7584 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    The 986 doesn't store over rev data. That aside, your understanding of rev ranges is at best flawed. While a missed shift can be problematic, unless the driver is an idiot, the sound of the engine should tell them hey, you're in the wrong gear. It is highly unlikely that exceeding the limits occasionally will do any damage. If that were the case, there would not be a single Porsche vehicle on the road today.

    It´s not the nr. of occurences the car hit the overrevs, but it is the nr. of ignitions the car made when it overreved, so 2 ignitions is nothing, if you imagine the total nr. of ignitions / minute...

    This missed the 928. the 911 is the poor man's 928. the 928 won "Car" of the year - no other sports car has ever won "Car" of the year. the 928 has two production car land speed records(1986 and 2020). the 928 is the biggest bang for the buck in exotic cars as well as the entire Porsche line up.

    A compression test wouldn’t show if a cam chain was stretched. It would show valve damage. I never even considered this when buying a Porsche. This is way beyond the scope of your average buyer. Maybe a trusted dealer is the way to go. I’ve had air cooled 911’s for best part of 30 years and I’m looking at 997s hopefully to keep forever. And it’s a minefield I can afford a good car. But I can’t afford a bad car so I do appreciate your wealth of Knowledge. Every day is a school day. When it comes to cars. There’s never been any other car for me. But it needs to be the right car.

    In the list it had ‘clear codes’, does that mean someone could erase the data if they had the same tool or does engine management always store the data. Thanks

    • @pjay3028
      @pjay3028 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Over revs are permanently stored.

    • @malp6280
      @malp6280 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the "Clear Codes" are engine management faults found, which can be deleted.. however most good scanners/computers & software can still see the wiped codes. these fautl codes really only highlight errors/issues within the operating system of the car.
      The Porsche over-rev system is entirely different & is a permanent data type... you can remove it but that would easily be found & costly, its not a simple "push to delete info"

    • @stevecade857
      @stevecade857 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No. Can you imagine the claims if Porsche allowed a PDK box to select a gear that over-revs.

    • @Baerchenization
      @Baerchenization 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unlike with a manual, you don't do the shifting - you just tell the car to shift and if it is physically not possible, it will not do it. But the PDK can do tricks you would not be able to do in a manual car, like instantly shift back from 7th to 2nd gear in order to rev out the last couple RPMs of2nd gear, if you hit the pedal hard ;)

    Just as one should do in any used purchase: have the car inspected by a Porsche mechanic that has the right device for your model. I bought my Porsche on impulse; but I had a good mechanic that educated me on the IMS bearing and other issues that were resolved before a catastrophic failure.

  • @Ric995
    @Ric995 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This only is important on a manual gearbox right? Or is it possible to over rev wit an automatic?

    • @Indyfinnswim
      @Indyfinnswim 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's technically only an issue with a manual gearbox, automatic downshfts won't over rev, BUT, if you put it in manual mode (paddle shift) and down shift to an over-rev then that could cause a problem.
