Speed increase from 750watt to 1250watt. Bye bye PEBL #7!

  • This video will be my LAST video with PEBL #7. I sold it today to Bob from Seattle and it's in the truck heading back there right now. It's bittersweet, since I haven't been using it much lately, and I know Bob and his two Cocker Spaniels will love riding around in it as much as they did the other day. I wish them the best with their new toy / transportation.
    I did an upgrade from 750watts to 1250 watts by changing the motor controller from 15 continuous amps to 25 continuous amps in order to help Bob decide to purchase my PEBL. Hill climbing was a major concern for him and while I didn't really need the extra wattage, I thought it might be interesting for you as well since the new PEBLs have a switch available that gives you the ability (on-road or off-road) to go from 750 watts up to 1500 watts just about 18% more powerful than the upgrade I did.
    I went to the same 20%+ incline hill nearby my house that I tested the PEBL on in Episode #10 to show the difference. It really made a difference!
    It's been a pleasure interacting with all of you over the last several years and I'm not going anywhere... I'm still going to be biking and will probably be looking into an e-bike before too long so I'll post my reviews as I get them.

    Hi Eric! Thanks for all your videos. I live in Burlington, Vermont. I picked up my orange PEBL from the factory on January 20. I use the 1500 watt mode for my ride to and from work because of the big hills I have to climb. My average speed going up hill is 15 mph with pedaling. On the flats at 1500 watts I get up to 25 mph without pedaling. With pedaling, my efforts are nonexistent as far as speed is concerned. The motor on my PEBL is powerful! Going down hill with pedaling I got it up to 32 mph, 30 with no pedaling. I am 5' 10" and weigh 225 lbs. I am the second person here in Burington to own a PEBL. The other owner lives about 3 miles from me. He has the proto type model.

      Hi, considering getting a PEBL. I currently have a 750 watt bafang mid drive pedal assist mountain ebike which I absolutely love. I was just wondering are they as loud as they seem to be in this video? I was shocked at how loud it seems. I would find that to be very off putting. My electric bike creates a small fraction of the decibel noise appearing on this video? Your feed back would be much appreciated. 😊 Thanks.

    As time moves on these small tricycles are getting better and more attractive to those who live a 30 minute ride from their place of employment and those who just want to go to get some groceries .
    More than half the trips in the UK are said to be less than 5 km making these trikes a viable alternative to the car.

    Eric, it is sad to see #7 go. I have not been able - or needed to ride mine very much this year. I will take it out tonight for a ~17 mile ride. I live on a hill, and the least steep approach has a section that requires that I pedal, even in high, especially when the voltage drops to below 45V.

    Sorry to see #7 go; your videos have been fun and informative; since there's so few of the PEBLs around it's been great to see your upgrades and maintenance. If I may ask, why did you sell it? I think like you, I like taking my normal bike when I can, and in particular right now, when my regular bike commute is non-existant, I don't find myself on it as much any more, but it's still awfully nice in wet weather and for carrying cargo.

    I don't know if the newer controller has a programming connection? The switch just closes a couple of wires on the controller; so a hardware modification, as opposed to a software mod.
    The high power mode switch gets me up to 24-25MPH with a full charge. The charge level makes a HUGE difference in power and top speed.

I think things got jostled out from their proper spots. That is my assumption. Any assistance would be appreciated the windshield wiper, the turn signals and lights and horn only occasionally work after the first day. Like I said I think it's from riding bumpy road. My PEBL had a triple chainring 22-32-44 in the front. I typically kept it on the middle ring. No front derailleur means moving it manually. I believe the rear was something like 22 tooth. Not sure though. One of my old videos might have that detail. You can use the Sheldon Brown Gear Calculator online to determine a good gear range. You’ll want something 18-90 gear inches for your application.

      You are clueless about the laws that govern ebikes, as well as the laws of physics. Any added generators or wind power devices can only slow it down and never add to the speed or range. That is a reference to perpetual motion machines which can not exist. Solar panels are the only practical upgrade.

    • @EricFischnaller
      @EricFischnaller  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A 5000 watt motor would not only be impractical because the battery required to turn on and propel such a motor would be huge and heavy - the Tesla Model 3 uses a 439 kW motor for instance and weighs 3600 - 4200lbs. I'm guessing that you're not capable of propelling such a weight on 3 wheels at any speed via pedals. This would be required to meet the requirements of bicycling - also it would have to be under 750 watts to be a bike. Now if you're throwing that out the window and wanting to just get a super-speed PEBL, then go for it - you won't be able to turn without flipping and rolling. I wouldn't recommend taking a corner in the PEBL at greater than 10mph unless you want to roll. So going in a straight line then.... except the weight of the battery and motor will crush the wheels... well I guess your idea is just shot then. Maybe we just go the way of Doc Brown and have the wheels fold up, the PEBL flies above the ground and teleports into the future. That might be more feasible than a PEBl with a 5 kW motor and 55mph speed.
