The true winner between Paulino and Sydney now can only be determined if they race against each other.

It happened already and Paulino won! Both Bol and McLaughlin Leverone went dabbling in the 400m flat.

Bull. They were in different races! Head to head, Paulino won already so it isn't a question of what might have been. U r just trying to grab headlines with a pseudo analysis! Pathetic! Go into a different field as U have no interest in athletics or U would have known that that competition occurred already!😊

Paulino jogged the last meter and never leans for the clock like Syd. Head to head race, still Paulino

She’s made for the 400, much like Quincy Hall on the men’s side. Her form coming home isn’t picture perfect - she just has the gears every time. Including the one time she and Syd raced last year and Paulino had the patience to run her down after she went out wicked hard

If they raced today yes Paulino would most probably win barring injury, but I believe if Sydney takes the necessary time to actively train for the 400m flat she could do greater things eventually....

I think Paulino could have probably gotten a 47.9 in Paris if she ran through the line, but she never seems to do that unfortunately.
While Sydney is a very big talent, in the flat 400m she hasn't been able to show the progression necessary to go sub 48s.
Maybe if she could have raced at Worlds in Budapest, we would have a better idea of what she's capable of, as she was training for the flat that year.
I think this race in Brussels was a pretty solid race from her, but it was not exceptional and unfortunately not a good predictor of what she could do in the event ...

@@_MicZ_ it’s the same with the prospect of sub-50 in the 400m hurdles. Sydney has fine tuned her race to near perfection to run 50.37. Given she typically peaks to 50.xx form only for US nationals/trials and worlds/Olympics, she doesn’t have a lot of room left for error. I think it’s possible but we can’t forget how much work it has taken her to get this far. She may have to chase after one barrier (let’s say sub-50) while potentially sacrificing her long term chase for the other (sub 48/flat WR).

Sydney vs Paulino in the open 400 a better matchup than Sydney vs Bol in the 400 hurdles. Although already elite in the open 400, Sydney has opportunity to improve signifcantly. The open 400 would actually be competitive for her, unlike the 400 hurdles where she is absolutely dominant!!!

CORRECTION: Syd PB is 48.74… you said 47.7 at one point… think was just slip of tongue, but was when you were comparing to Paulino’s 48.17 so some might have gotten impression that Syd had already went sub 48 when she hasn’t.

What’s interesting about that is 47.7 with a full running start (no acceleration out of the blocks) is a good argument that she’s not capable of breaking the 47.60 400m world record… if you can’t do it with a full running start… Odds out you can’t do it if you need to accelerate out of the blocks 🤔

@doctorSpoc 2nd leg of relay, at Paris. All legs of relay, except anchor, require slowing down to pass baton, which is said to cost several 10ths. The two other faster legs in history have been anchor, which allows you to run at full speed over the line. Not saying that she may break record but would have been nice to see her run that final leg against Femke.

      @@michaellawrence588 Don’t agree with most of that…
      a) it’s an estimate, b) it depends where you start and stop that estimate..
most of these estimates are taken at the most advantageous portion of the person’s relay leg…
Relay splits (other than 1st leg) that I have seen always seem to be CONSIDERABLY faster that what the person can run outside of a relay 🤷🏽‍♂️

Both Paulino and Sydney would have run faster if they'd been in the same race.
The Diamond League needs to find a more climate-sensible location for its championship meet of Mid September!!! For example, this evening at mid-meet time (9pm) Athens is predicted at 77°F while Brussels is predicted at 53°F. The performances would be better and, more important, the risk of athlete injury would be less.

Since Paulino is 3 years McLaughlin-Levrone's senior, I don't know how much longer she'll have to compete in her prime. It seems she is peaking right now. You hit the nail on the head. Michael Johnson should absolutely reach out to Paulino and some others as well. I could be wrong, but I only see Paulino, Femke Bol, Salwa Eid Naser and Lieke Klaver as the only 400m runners who even have a chance to "train up" to compete with and maybe get some exciting 400m races with McLaughlin-Levrone. Oh my.... forgot about Alexis Holmes. She is the youngest and best option of all for 400m competitive races in the years to come.
