What a great man. As a young kid I was waiting outside for my mom at a sports card convention that he was at signing autographs. He saw me there by myself waiting on a bench and he came over and sat down with me to make sure I was ok and he sat with me and we talked until my mom got there. This sums up the the kind of man he was and we all should be . Thank you Bob!!!!!!

He is never credited for being a smart pitcher, only a very intimidating power pitcher. In reality Gibson used a lot of deception. Hitters expected the great fastball but Gibson would change speeds and level of break with that slider. It would look like a curve at times then it would look like his fastball. He threw hard but Maloney, Koufax threw harder. Gibson developed great control over the years. In 1968 he peaked but if he was given the opportunity and had some of the basic advantages others had, he would have reached his peak a few years earlier. No excuses because many pitchers in the previous era lost years to the war.

Because he was incredibly smart and knew how to make himself frightening, and baseball is all a psychological battle anyway, and Gibson was the master of that. Born and raised in St. Louis in 1964. My grandad loved taking me to Cardinal games and I loved going with him. All the other games he listened to on KMOX radio unless it was televised. I felt the loss when I heard the news of Gibby passing away. Cherished memories for sure.

You can argue about who was the greatest pitcher ever, but Bob Gibson is by far the greatest Cardinals pitcher ever. Bob Gibson even pitched big in the post seasons of 1964, 1967, and 1968. In 1968 for example he was the only Cards pitcher who did well versus the Tigers. I grew up watching him but his 20 win or near 20 win seasons became so routine, that I had to live and follow baseball another 45 years after he retired that I realized he was one of the greatest ever. I also remember all the times he lost games 1-0 or 2-1. He went the full nine innings. I recommend any baseball fan visit St. Louis and see the Cardinals Hall of Fame museum in their Ballpark Village alongside the stadium. You will enjoy it.

On the other hand, in the year 2000, there was only one American League pitcher with an era under 3.70. That one pitcher was Pedro Martinez with a 1.74. In the height of the steroid era, in the AL East, with half his games at Fenway, Pedro had an era of 1.74. That is more impressive than Gibson's 1.12. If you're a stats guy, Pedro had an ERA+ of 291 compared to Gibson's ERA+ of 258 (the higher the better). Pedro also had the best single season WHIP of all time that year. Gibson's '68 is easily second, but I have trouble seeing Pedro's 2000 as better.

In 1965 our baseball coach, M M McMahon, from a little SE Missouri school in Clarkton, MO drove a school bus to take his baseball team to see the Cardinals play. Before the game, we got to go down on the field and visit with the players of our corresponding positions. I was a pitcher so I got to be with Bob Gibson. He was phenomenal and our idol anyway, but this was very special. He showed us how to how to hold the baseball to make different types of pitches and of course we were just in awe. A memory I cherish and will never forget, along with being able to watch the he Cardinals in World Series. Rest in peace, Mr. Gibson.

I am crying so much...I'm 63 and I remember all of these greats. Each one them were such great human beings. I feel like we need a national week or month of morning. That was part of Bob Gibson's deception tactics. He actually had two fastballs, a cutter and a sinker. He had two sliders, one that broke laterally either right or left like a hard screw ball and one that would break like a hard curve. He also had a curve and he did change speeds on occasion. He even had a brush back pitch, a knockdown pitch and a hits bat man pitch. He really was an intelligent pitcher.
He pitched in an era where some of the all-time greatest pitchers played. Koufax, Marichal, Drysdale, Seaver, Ford, Palmer, and on and on…but no one was as fierce as Mr. Gibson! I still coach youth baseball and until last year was coaching men and I always make sure my pitchers understand how Bob Gibson played the game.

The lead now 7-5, everyone knew Gibson had nothing left, but the Manager in his words, tearfully said "I made a commitment to his heart." With his last ounce of reserve, He got Bobby Richardson to pop up. (Maris and Mantle would have followed). As they celebrated, you could see him collapse in their arms. If I needed one game to win for my life, I'd pick you over KOUFAX, MARICHAL, WALTER JOHNSON, GREG MADDUX, VERLANDER et al. God Picked you for his pitching staff yesterday, and I can see why. Bob Gibson or Sandy Koufax? It's like Beatles or Stones? I had such admiration for both of these great players. There were plenty of other great pitchers during that era but, those two were the most dominant and captured my imagination and attention the most. I never got to watch Koufax live, only on TV. I did get to see Gibson twice in San Diego in the early 70's.
I can’t “remember” Gibson as he was before my time. But the great thing about growing up a Cardinals fan is that you get to enjoy great history, and the ones who made it are “family”! I love him and will miss him even though I never knew him.
If Bob Gibson was a scumbag, then what was Don Drysdale who hit nearly twice as many batters in fewer career innings. Gibson used intimidation as a tool but he was fair with it. He purposely took away the inside corner but if he made a mistake inside and got hit he didn't retaliate. He only retaliated when the batter would lean over the plate. In Gibson's mind the hitter was cheating. It reminds me of Sal "the barber" Maglie.
Notice the announcer doesn't say "post-season," he says "World Series." There were no playoffs in 1967 and 1968. It was the two best teams in each league squaring off after played a 162-game season.
Please don't infer from his desire to win and be respected that Gibson was a mean or overly aggressive person. He was a very intelligent man and player who was super-focused on game day and would knock you down if you showed him up. Easily one of the most beloved and greatest Cardinal of all time.
Yep, outside of game day when he was playing, he was an incredibly lovely man. And he was one of the smartest if not _THE_ smartest pitchers ever, because he was an absolute master of psychology. He was never the biggest, or the strongest. He used his average sized body to seem like a terrifying giant on the mound, because he employed psychology in every pitch he threw.

When I heard the news, I had to take out my old Gibson jersey and wear it in tribute to the man. Really felt the loss as I was putting it on.

In 1965 our baseball coach, M M McMahon, from a little SE Missouri school in Clarkton, MO drove a school bus to take his baseball team to see the Cardinals play. Before the game, we got to go down on the field and visit with the players of our corresponding positions. I was a pitcher so I got to be with Bob Gibson. He was phenomenal and our idol anyway, but this was very special. He showed us how to how to hold the baseball to make different types of pitches and of course we were just in awe. A memory I cherish and will never forget, along with being able to watch the he Cardinals in World Series. Rest in peace, Mr. Gibson.

I was talking to a friend about Lou and Bob on Friday night and had an eerie feeling when I said Bob was the last of my boy hood heroes. Nitschke Starr Brock Gibson, my own personal Mt. Rushmore. I guess at 62 my childhood is really over.
It's not over until it's over. You can keep your dreams alive, Robert. I'm 64 and I can never forget my dad. All I have are childhood baseball memories, because he retired the year I graduated high school, then it was over for us as a family. He remarried.

I am crying so much...I'm 63 and I remember all of these greats. Each one them were such great human beings. I feel like we need a national week or month of morning. So few young people today will ever have what we had in the 1960's. Clean competition. Just look at how we dressed when we went to a baseball game. Life goes on.

That was part of Bob Gibson's deception tactics. He actually had two fastballs, a cutter and a sinker. He had two sliders, one that broke laterally either right or left like a hard screw ball and one that would break like a hard curve. He also had a curve and he did change speeds on occasion. He even had a brush back pitch, a knockdown pitch and a hits bat man pitch. He really was an intelligent pitcher.

He pitched in an era where some of the all-time greatest pitchers played. Koufax, Marichal, Drysdale, Seaver, Ford, Palmer, and on and on…but no one was as fierce as Mr. Gibson! I still coach youth baseball and until last year was coaching men and I always make sure my pitchers understand how Bob Gibson played the game.

Knowing that Bob Gibson was pitching on two days rest,The manager had told him that he was going to stick with him in the 9th inning, when the Cardinals had a 7-3 Lead over the Yankees. "You Can't give up four home runs," he said. He gave up two, and got two outs. The lead now 7-5, everyone knew Gibson had nothing left, but the Manager in his words, tearfully said "I made a commitment to his heart." With his last ounce of reserve, He got Bobby Richardson to pop up. (Maris and Mantle would have followed). As they celebrated, you could see him collapse in their arms. If I needed one game to win for my life, I'd pick you over KOUFAX, MARICHAL, WALTER JOHNSON, GREG MADDUX, VERLANDER et al. God Picked you for his pitching staff yesterday, and I can see why. Bob Gibson or Sandy Koufax? It's like Beatles or Stones? I had such admiration for both of these great players. There were plenty of other great pitchers during that era but, those two were the most dominant and captured my imagination and attention the most. I never got to watch Koufax live, only on TV. I did get to see Gibson twice in San Diego in the early 70's.
I can’t “remember” Gibson as he was before my time. But the great thing about growing up a Cardinals fan is that you get to enjoy great history, and the ones who made it are “family”! I love him and will miss him even though I never knew him.

I read a story that he once threw at a batter in the on-deck circle. I don't know if it's true, but I like to think it is.
If Bob Gibson was a scumbag, then what was Don Drysdale who hit nearly twice as many batters in fewer career innings. Gibson used intimidation as a tool but he was fair with it. He purposely took away the inside corner but if he made a mistake inside and got hit he didn't retaliate. He only retaliated when the batter would lean over the plate. In Gibson's mind the hitter was cheating. It reminds me of Sal "the barber" Maglie.
Nobody will ever strike out 17 batters in a world series ever again.

Yep, outside of game day when he was playing, he was an incredibly lovely man. And he was one of the smartest if not _THE_ smartest pitchers ever, because he was an absolute master of psychology. He was never the biggest, or the strongest. He used his average sized body to seem like a terrifying giant on the mound, because he employed psychology in every pitch he threw.
They changed the mound height and strike zone mainly due to this guy. Pretty telling about how dominant he was.
