- "Acrylic Paint Myth 2: Acrylic Paint is Non-Toxic". Protect yourself when using acrylic paint. Even if the label says there are no health hazards, the paint manufacturers test the hazard level at the end of a brush, not in contact with your skin! Be careful out there.

Thanks for the info! Also, as someone who recently took organic chemistry and worked with synthesizing organic compounds, I hope no one confuses organic compounds with safe compounds. There are so many chemicals used in organic chemistry that are known toxins and carcinogens. Stay safe fellow artists!

This is something I had avoided giving much thought. I can't even be in the same room with fresh oil paints and solvents because I'll get a migraine that lasts for days, so that's not part of my life, and I knew that pastel dust is pretty lethal, but I've basically used all other mediums as if there were no worries! I will be wearing laetrile gloves for watercolors, acrylics, etc., and taking my sprays outside. Thanks for caring.

In college we had a teacher who had severe visible neurological problems, and died in his 50's of cancer. It was said to be due to over exposure to paint.
We took it as a cautionary tale and always followed the protocols carefully- not spraying, not getting it on your skin, no dumping in the drains, etc.

Thanks for this info!! I’ve seen young people suffer respiratory issues after using epoxy resin without ventilation masks and didn’t even know that it was a thing because all it said on the bottle was to wear gloves. Great facts about paint as well - I usually only use acrylic paint for occasional crafting purposes but have been interested into getting more into painting and am so glad I came across this video.

Thank you so much for talking about toxicity and paint and the danger to artists...It is so important is so seldom emphasized or discussed as an issue. You are the first instructor I have come across who has said more than catch up one or two sentences about toxicity without really emphasizing the dangers and how to protect oneself. 🙏
Just so you know there are very light fumes to acrylic paints, as I developed a reaction to the paint. I have a very sensitive nose and can smell what others can't. This I'm sure is rare. My nose runs when I paint and I also will sneeze. I will try to wear a mask, and hope that works. I hope I don't have to give up painting, as I really enjoy it. I can't use cleaners either, or scented laundry soaps.
You are correct, acrylic paint has a bit of odor, but isn’t toxic like oil paint. You may be allergic to it. Maybe use should try watercolor or gouache instead.
I have Mast Cell Activation and can have allergic reactions to acrylic paint, hives and rash. I discovered a box fan with an allergy filter attached really helped when I put it in my garage.
I avid my skin as much as possible with acrylic paint but some always gets on my hands when using a brush or palette knife. I was researching weather or not masters touch acrylics from hobby lobby were toxic like the fumes or the ingredients listed on the back this video was helpful
We all get paint on our hands when we paint unless we wear gloves. It’s probably not an issue unless you have on for long periods of time everyday.

You’re welcome. Pouring is a fad - it will be played out soon. It takes no artistic skill, that’s why so many are getting into it.
Thank you so very much for the extremely informative and helpful video! I try to be careful but will be taking additional precautions! Re your comment on paint pouring: have you actually attempted any of the more advanced pouring techniques? Is that how you know it takes no artistic talent?
Eileen Mayes I don’t, haven’t and won’t do any paint pouring. People who do it want you to think there are “advanced techniques.” Its garbage plain and simple. Anybody can do it with no idea what you are doing. It takes no skill. Its a FAD. People want to calm themselves an artist so bad they’ll do anything to prove it - except of course study foundational principals and learn how to implement them in their work. There aren’t enough adjectives in our language to describe how much I despise it.

I am a beginner. What Acrylic Paint (brand) is the LEAST TOXIC? I am sensitive to smells, like nail polish, allergies etc. Any brands you can recommend for a beginner is much appreciated. I really liked the video!
I don’t know the answer to your question, you’ll have to do some research to determine if any brands are less toxic than others. I suspect all are about the same because they use similar ingredients.
Stick to liquitex, they use no formaldehyde or anything toxic as a preservative in their products, also they got rid of all cadmium pigments
@@GiantArtProductions I think their BASIC line still uses some cadmium tho, Arteza is one of the brands that got rid of the toxic to artists substances but better do a quick search.
@@danm94 yeah the basics still do although they might phase them out. rembrandt pastels for example don't use any toxic pigments iirc because pastels are so frequently blended with fingers.

I am a mixed media artist and having chronic hives due to an art product that I can’t figure out. I have to check my ingredients and the dermatologist will order specific tests. The only new paint in Matisse from Australia… So frustrated and discouraged.

Apple Barrel brand is a kid friendly beginners brand. It’s non toxic. My friend used it as face paint at a haunted house for a week straight and nothing happened.
Regular acrylic paint should NEVER be used for face paint on anyone, especially children! There is paint specifically made for face paint but never use paint not made for that.

Is it also dangerous if all one does is sit in these labs and perceiving the smell of these chemicals? Is it equally as dangerous as taking in the fumes from spray painting?

I had been using it for art for about a month or two ish b4 i found out it was toxic! I even put it on my skin! I wish they put it on the bottle. I dont know what i should do.
I have it on my skin all the time - I just don’t leave it on for too long. Don’t worry - its not toxic like uranium or anything. Using it for painting is what its for, just use common sense.

Hi David. This is such an odd question.. but I really hope you can shed some light please... my son who is only 15 months old, got a hold of one of my tubs of acrylic paint.. he didn't ingest any of it thank goodness, but he got a lot of it on his skin (arms, legs, and tummy). I am stressing out and I cant find sufficient info. The label is unreadable so I dont know the specific ingredients. Should I be freaking out?
Hi Anna, I’m no doctor, but of it were my child I wouldn’t be concerned. The issue comes from continued long-term exposure, not a one time exposure to it. Just make sure you keep it out of his reach moving forward.

How damaging are these paints / resins to the environment?... if they’re being dug from the ground and disposed of into the land these things must be very damaging

Hi, thanks for this safety video. One thing I couldn't find any information as I was researching is the safety of varnishing. I se the spray varnish but cannot tolerate the smell!! I was thinking if brush on one is safer? I do this process outside in my backyard. I do alot of acrylic painting and after watching this video I'll be wearing nitrile gloves regularly. But just dont know how to varnish safely??
I agree that the spray varnish, while it works great, has an awful smell that is very harmful. It sounds like you are doing all you can to be safe - working outside is the best advice. Using a brush to apply varnish is a fine approach. The varnish in the paint containers is the same stuff, but it doesn’t become airborne like the aerosol spray.
Look up: “Crystalac”. Completely non toxic with beautiful results.
I am painting acrylics with a respirator mask in my bedroom and I open the window after I finished leaving it opened for half to one hour. Should I worry about my health or is this absolutely safe?
I don’t believe the fumes from acrylic paint are toxic, but I’m no expert. Oil paint fumes are toxic.

I want to first of all thank you so much for this video, i was buying into all the non-toxic acrylic paint and not even thinking about all the things you have mentioned. One question i do have is that toxic or not, is it completely safe when the paint is dry one a canvas or paper canvas?
You’re welcome. I assume once its dry, acrylic paint is inert, but you should research it to be sure. While oil paint continues to off-gas as it dries, acrylic does not. Thanks for watching!
Off topic but I used to finger paint with oils, then get it all over my skin and not clean it off. I stopped that! Now gloves and special soap to clean it off ASAP.
Marc, You should NEVER get oil paint like that on your skin!!! The carcinagens will go right thru skin into your blood stream. Be smart and take care of yourself.

You’re telling me! I use mine all the time when painting and I don’t like to wear gloves. I just try not to leave the paint on my hands for long periods of time.

There are paints specifically made for fabric - I’d use that.
Man i painted w acrylic in my room for the first time and it heated up during the winter and has no ventilation. Now the fumes are stuck in my room and really bother me. I dont know what to do
The obvious answer is to stop painting during the winter. There are no toxic fumes from acrylic paint like there is with oil paint. You’ll have to figure out what’s best for you.
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and informing us all. One question pls? I decorate candles with acrylic paint. I put the acrylic paint in a squeeze tube bottle applicator for a “raised” effect on my candles and for that I have to work quite closely as I am doing intricate designs so my question is.. it safe for me to work so closely and be essentially inhaling the acrylic paint?
I'm not aware of any health concerns of inhaling acrylic paint - the paint is water based and there, as per my understanding, does not have any harmful vapors. Unlike acrylic house paint which has a completely different makeup from art acrylic paint.
I am shocked to hear watercolor painting can be deadly, can someone please explain how this happens?
It’s rarely deadly, but can lead to severe health problems, as can any paint. It’s called chemicals - that’s the potentially toxic part of paint pigments.
What about the cheap craft paint? Or other paints that have no warnings? Are oil paints safe? Without using solvents
You have to do your research. Oil paint is the most toxic of all paint, whether you use solvents or not.

@@ourlittlefamily8342 inhaling oil paint is TOXIC! There is medical evidence. This is science, not conjecture. Have you ever heard of “huffing”? One form of huffing is inhaling fumes from oil paint. The effects produce a temporary high and long term cognitive impairment. Research also suggests that there is a direct link between the heavy metals in the paint, the fumes, and cancer.

Hi…I was told by the store that Tri-Art Liquid Glass is not toxic. I have been using this without any face protection. Is this polyester resin?
I don’t know anything about that product. Keep in mind that retail store employees may not be completely informed about all products carried at the store. Lots of people believe all water based products are non-toxic - that’s why I did this video.

@@preethas7710 respirators aren’t needed for water based paint, because there are no toxic fumes. The only toxicity for acrylic paint, as I said in the video is in skin contact over a prolonged period. If you use resin or anything similar, a respirator is a good idea.

But pets, my cat got some on his paw and i tried washing it off but it got watered down and smeared all over both of us. Will he be okay?
I’m sure he’ll be fine. It is the continuous exposure over a period of time that creates issues.

Acrylic Mediums are water based and have no toxic fumes.

Hi David I used cobalt blue acrylic for the first time I used a mask and used a brush but some came in contact with my hands, but I washed them after painting would this be soemthing to worry about ?
Josh, no nothing to worry about. The issue comes with repeated and continued exposure on your skin over a long period of time. There shouldn’t be any airborne particles because the pigment is suspended within an acrylic binder - no need for a mask.

Do you want toxic paint on your face? There is paint made for face painting, but standard acrylic paint is not made to be placed on skin - I thought the video was pretty clear.

Flightskater kid what did you expect to happen? What you don’t seem to understand is that the toxicity of the paint leaches into your bloodstream. It may not do anything in the surface, but repeated exposure can give long term health issues. Do what you want with it - it’s your body - knock yourself out.

Does acrylic paint give off VOC. The metals you are mentioning are radioactive. I was thinking about painting my face masks with this paint but not so sure now.
There are no VOC’s from the paint I use. You should do more research in that area if you’re concerned about it.
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 It's hard to find the toxic effects of acrylic paints because the studies don't differentiate between artists exposure compared to industrial workers and the environmental exposure. What paints do you use?
