fkn amazing looking. you would think Nintendo would have thought to do this. Reminds me of Super Mario All Stars the way that game had updated graphics.
Hi NESGameFan, and thank you for your quick reply regarding my technical issues with the hd pack. Anyway, you asked for some specifications in relation to my pc.... so I will fill you in. Yes, my pc is a laptop.... and it is recent. It has a 1.10 GHz Intel Pentium Silver N5030 CPU, and 4 GB of RAM. Like you, I suspect the hd pack is weighing a bit heavy on cpu and RAM usage.... as task manager revealed. I am thinking the cause of the issue is my laptop's limitations. Fortunately, version 1.4 of the hd pack works great. So, I may just take the new tiles from the latest version of the hd pack, and edit them into the earlier version 1.4 using Gimp. I've been playing with the tile sets of version 1.4 using Gimp for quite sometime now. So, I am familiar with how to update them manually through editing. It can actually be quite fun. I won't have the other features of the latest hd pack, but that's ok.... the tiles are enough. One thing I am considering doing is taking all the blue Brinstar tiles in the earlier hd pack, and changing their color from the Super Metroid palette to their original NES Metroid palette which is a lower frequency blue. However, I am beginning to needlessly rant.... so I am going to stop while I'm ahead. I hope the technical information regarding my pc can maybe help you determine as to what the root issue is. Thanks again for your earlier reply.
Yes, based on the CPU, that's likely the cause. For reference, a i7-7700 should get around 80 FPS in some demanding areas depending on what else may be going on. Also, as it sounds you have gathered already, version 1.4 of the pack is significantly less demanding. Also, I salute you for editing tiles in version 1.4. Part of the reason the coding was re-written from the ground up was to address the annoyance of having to duplicate graphics multiple times to get 1.4 working properly. Also, general layout of most of the .pngs is a bit of a mess. You're a trooper if you power through all of those annoyances :)
Good news - the latest version of this MOD increases the movement speed. A new gameplay video is here: th-cam.com/video/WEXH5-O_jp8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZLBJX1Q1zi0ZLsNN
I love everything about this except the running sprite animation. Classic NES Metroid had this sort of forward leaning run for Samus. Probably a nitpick, but just wanted to give some due praise as well as a suggestion.
Fascinating, looks great but at what point did people want this over say, Zero Mission? While Zero Mission is most certainly not a 1-1 remake it has tons of extra content and changes, I often wonder what drives a project like this when perfectly acceptable other options exist. Kudos to the team however for making something that looks this sharp and is as faithful as it can be given the context.
Zero Mission is a fairly different game. It is good, but different. Since this is mostly just a reskin of the original, there are a lot of differences. This version does not hold the players hand and provide hints. This version allows for easier sequence breaking. This version is easier to customize. This version has higher resolution and sound fidelity. On the flip side, many will argue the physics is worse and there is less content. There are other examples, but it mostly comes down to different strokes for different folks.
Zero Mission is loosely based on the NES Metroid game, same overall map layout. But ZM adds several new areas, a ton of story and new items, and even the original areas are vastly modified, and it plays very differently. The scale is also different, Samus is much bigger compared to the environment and rooms, so it feels more cramped in places.
:) Believe it or not, that's actually how the original game looks as well. Since this is a reskin, the off-center Samus in the original remains even after applying the pack.
Looking pretty nice but that walking animation needs to learn a thing or two from the sakurai animation videos. She kinda glides along when in this case less is more and you want it to be quick and snappy.

If I may gentlemen, I'd like to ask for a bit of technical help here. You see, I got the hd pack successfully installed.... but the game runs somewhat slow. Slow especially during door transitions too. Emulation is laggy. I checked task manager, and it revealed that Mesen 2 was utilizing 85 - 100% of my pc's cpu power.... and a great deal of the pc's memory. I imagine things should work because I have a new Windows 11 pc. It should be able to handle the hd pack. I did a test run using a regular non hd rom. The emulator worked fine. However, once I loaded Metroid Hd, there was some slowdown with the emulation. If anyone has any thoughts regarding a solution to my problem, I sure would appreciate it.
The Metroid HD pack is fairly CPU intensive. Part of the reason for this is that the NES emulator is being forced to do some things that it was never really initially designed to do. As a result, a lot of code is sometimes required for very simple things. In total, the pack has about 250k lines of code before even getting to all the .png and .ogg files. It's possible the issues you are talking about are performance related. What kind of CPU do you have? Is it a laptop?
Yeah - it would be great if it could be larger. The pack comes bundled with a number of Romhacks in the form of a .ips file that is applied automatically to the vanilla ROM supplied by the player. The pause map comes from a hack called Metroid mOTHER here: www.romhacking.net/hacks/1988/. For the map to be larger, someone would need to find a way to hack the NES ROM to make it possible. Maybe one day...
Original hardware can not run this MOD, unfortunately. However, this is operating on an NES emulator via an enhancement asset pack with the original ROM running in the background.
Most structures are unchanged. But yes, there are a couple of areas with changes. One example is the Ridley fight. In that case, it was to address flicker issues and also to address a very common complaint that Ridley is a pushover. The new layout in that room makes the encounter slightly more of a challenge.
the original console would never be able to run this game with this fluidity and these graphics, only if it used a special chip to help with performance, other than that, this result can only be obtained in an emulator.

We haven't had luck merging existing corner minimap hacks with the pack yet. Various issues seem to pop up when making attempts at this... but, maybe one day...
You will need a vanilla ROM of the NES version (not the FDS version). But, if you wanted some FDS music, that is possible. You'd just need to convert FDS tracks into .ogg files and swap out the existing .ogg files in the pack.
