Guys I can’t believe I missed a crucial part of this episode about Nicole 😭😭😭 I will have to film something and explain. But thank you for letting me know.
Tyra forgot to call Nicole for the panel. It was to make a point that she is not memorable and doesn't have enough "personality" to stand up. As for some reason, Nicole is at fault Tyra didn't call her.
@@delmicortave Nicole did mention in her interview with Oliver TwiXt that (can't remember what she said verbatim) when she got eliminated and she made a rude remark about Tyra in her elimination video which resulted in Tyra telling a producer to edited out Nicole in most scenes in the episode she was in, leading up to her unfair elimination.
Is it though? I feel like they’re like olives. Okay, I guess they’re an acquired taste too, but they’re basically just salty, no odd flavors or funkiness to speak of. I think the problem here was that the copy they were reading made them think it was a sweet / candy, and that unexpected surprise of not knowing what the food actually tastes like have them the old bait and switch.
@@janesays1278 yes, they are. Source, lived there, tried it, hated it, told by Japanese friends it took them a while. Of all the weird things to want to "well actually" about
I worked on commercial once. It was a burger. There were several burgers on the set, and they were made super dry (so the burger will look good). And they told me to just spit out - BECAUSE IT WAS MEANT TO LOOK GOOD, not to be eaten
As someone with allergies... expecting a model to eat something without being told what it is or the ingredients can literally harm a model so badly..... this is so dangerous and horrible.
I have had friends with food allergies. That's not something I take lightly. When inviting someone over for dinner, I always ask if they have allergies or other dietary restrictions.
The umeboshi thing is ridiculous! Umeboshi is a fermented plum that you eat with rice, it's sour and salty, so i don't know what the "sweet like candy"-thing was about (or whatever they were made to say)... like it's literally not meant to be eaten on it's own! I bet most Japanese people wouldn't even like it if they ate the umeboshi on it's own.
it's like asking something to eat a full bite of wasabi or something. It doesn't really make sense. When I was a kid my mum made me eat a full umeboshi plum all at once and I used to hate it because it was SO sour! It was one of those "it's supposed to be good for you" old people remedies. I do love umeboshi though, it's just not really you just spring on someone and you don't generally eat it by itself without it being a "lets endure this for the health benefits" reason
Yeah ! I was introduced to umeboshi by eating it in an onigiri! I liked it so much that now I can eat it on its own but like it took me a year and half to try it on its own for the first time .
@@chikensaregood9500 It's not insulting to try to speak Japanese - it's insulting that the crew of a commercial airing IN JAPAN shouldn't do more to make sure that the people speaking could be more fluent and understood. It makes communication seem like an after thought and, yeah, that is kind of insulting.
The girls talking about the translators Japanese wasn’t great either. She has fine English for most settings I’m sure but this sets everyone up for failure and embarrassment.
This is just brutal! As an actor this is not realistic. All of this is totally unprofessional and tacky. Script changes happen, yes, but learning a language on the spot? Only ANTM. 🤦🏾♂️
And without an actual language coach that's going to help them practice. It just makes me so angry because the judges will constantly talk about "this is the real world" and how the models need to be "professional" then they throw them into this fly-by-night amateur night bullshit. AND THEN berate them when they don't perform at 100%
Not only that, but I know when actors film food commercials, or even scenes for movies or shows, that they don't actually eat the food. With all the takes they have to do, they'd get sick very quickly, so I know they usually take a bite for camera, then spit out whatever they have in their mouths.
Hi, person of japanese heritage here. Umeboshi is plum that's pickled? Fermented? It's quite salty and sour, the taste can be quite strong. No surprise and no offense that here she spit it out
Tyra Banks projects SO MUCH of her insecurities, selfishness, low self esteem, and nasty attitude onto these poor girls and she steals every bit of happiness, innocence and purity from them. Tyra Banks needs to be humbled.
exactly. i feel like she makes them do stuff she probably had to do in her career. like if your upbringing in the industry was bad why would you do that to upcoming models like wouldnt you want them to experience a better time than what you went thru instead ?
Amanda (in a recent interview) confirmed that this was a nonsense assignment they quickly made up because the girls were detained at the airport due to not having their documents in order. So their filming time had been drastically reduced and the original assigment couldn't happen anymore.
And also the stylist that previously pinched Toccara isn't allowed to go to Japan hence the outfits for all the Japan shoots were stolen by her and then this shoot was created as a plan Z from J. Also the style for this shoot was just bathrobes from the hotel they're staying at lol.
@@PandoraStolen OliverTwixt interviews and the antm recap reunion catch up epsiode that aired. Japanese officials at customs believed they were SW primarily bc of Ann and Eva. In the reunion ep, Ann blames the show.
Somebody could've had an allergic reaction to that food, and nobody on production would bat an eye. 🙄 How is someone supposed to just eat a product without any information or warning??? The lengths they go to just for gaslighting.
@@addie-eileenpaige6460 actually they wouldn't be, they sign all this paperwork before filming that they can't sue if they are hurt in any way or death. It's really messed up but you gotta watch what your signing, there's a reason why there's so much paperwork because most won't read thru it. Jersey Shore and all those were ran the same way.
And probably knows exactly how bullshit the "no spitting out food you're marketing" crap is. They ALWAYS spit out food between takes to avoid getting sick.
I have always hated those episodes (even when I was a kid) where they forced the girls to speak in a language they actually didn't know and made fun of them.
Same with the season when the final handful went to Spain and had to speak Catalan...with no prep time and cue cards. It's like come on, that's super unfair
I was in several commercials when I was younger (much younger 😉). We didn’t swallow the food. We had a bucket to spit the food into. By the end of the day you’d be sick if you ate the food each take. This was ridiculous. My daughter is a Japanese major. She’s been taking Japanese classes for 5 years now. We love to watch your content when you travel to Japan.
I've heard about this. This is the same in TV shows & movies with food. I know in Matilda, the scene where Bruce Boggtrotter had to eat a whole cake, he spit out each bite for the same reasons you said. He'd be puking his guts up if he actually ate a whole cake.
I was a child actor who occasionally did commercials and you are very right! We always had to spit it out into a bucket. Yes, sometimes you would have to do many takes so you would definitely be sick if you had to eat that much. Typical 'reality' TV show - totally unrealistic!!! :P
Some competition shows are like "you did good but as we get further we need to be more picky and we think this other person did a little bit better" ANTM is like "hey i know you made it to the top 4 but you have no skill, your personality is bad, also you have identity issues and i hate you."
If we actors were to swallow the food in commercials and film, we would get sick. You rarely ever swallow the food, unless there absolutely needs to be that shot. You never need the shot of someone swallowing the food in a commercial. Also, production would rather you have tasted the food, or sub it out with something you actually like, before they start filming. They are loud and wrong about how commercials work. The worst part is that Tyra KNOWS this is a lie, because she's done films, shows, and commercials.
They just wanted the girls to eat it for the drama. Yaya wasn't the only one who hated it. The other girls said in their interviews that they hated it.
I've heard this. I saw behind the scenes of the film Matilda of when they did the scene of Bruce Bogtrotter eating the cake. They had him spit out each bite, or else he'd really get sick if he had to eat a whole freaking cake!
This is what I was thinking. Most sets would have an actual spit bucket or lil trashcan because it’s just not practical to have them actually eating every bite especially when most sets would do multiple takes.
This whole season they have been very ableist against Amanda. She is going blind. She can’t see that well. Out of all the girls they filmed her last, at nighttime? It was lucky she knew the script because I bet she wouldn’t be able to read to cue cards. There was no need to make it harder for her - they could have filmed her earlier but they love it when models fail.
Seems they constantly did that to her this season, instead of making it easier just made it more difficult. They really love messing with the young women.
I’ve always felt so bad for Nicole this episode. She kept getting “forgotten” about… like what the heck? I’m pretty sure the producers just wanted her eliminated and couldn’t find a good way to send her home since she was doing pretty good in all of her photo shoots and challenges, so they just started to “forget” she was there.
Bingo. Perfect example of how the models just couldn't win no matter what they did. If they can't get you one way, they will find another way to put the models down and humiliate them. And you can tell the judges and Tyra love it too.
@@PandoraStolen lol Judges or art director talk loudly on set to a model so she can hear. Jessica: OMG WHY DINT YOU TAKE HER ASIDE AND TELL HER THIS IN PRIVATE?!?! This is so problematic!!!
I love that Yaya went on to act in shows after this. She was definitely one of my favorite ANTM girls! And that hug that she gave to nicole was so sweet. She really fully brought her in to show her love. Love that ❤️❤️
She's been in a few movies including big movies. She was in The Butler with Forest Whitaker and Oprah, she played the girlfriend that they didn't like. She's quite the dramatic actress, very talented indeed.
So it’s disrespectful for her to spit something that she just couldn’t handle to eat which is not something she can completely control but is not disrespectful for the director to be straight up laughing for a model trying her best to speak Japanese?!?! Its like the models don’t have the right to do anything or express themselves but they can do everything because its justified. Bullies 🤬
Um yes it is disrespectful um like come on when actresses or models are asked to perform stuff they usually do it like that is not how modeling works or acting you usually have to do what you are told.
my friend has worked on many food commercials, she said never once has she actually had to swallow the food, in fact most of the time when the cameras cut they’re told to spit it out especially when working with fast food like kfc because of how many takes they do so the model spitting the food out after wouldn’t have mattered in a real commercial
I was learning Japanese when this episode aired I felt so bad for these girls and I have a feeling Mr Yoshi knows more English than he's claiming and Tyra probably told him to pretend. Also Yoshi wasn't even offended when she spat out the food but of course Tyra has to make a big deal out of it.
Umeboshi is a tough food to eat alone 💀😭✋ and very much an acquired taste. I did like it much either when I first tasted it. Natto, I had to spit out 🤷♂️😅 i got used to it after a few tries. A lot of Japanese people really dislike or just aren't used to a lot of dairy products 😮 my host family couldn't eat much of the dessert I made them because it had cream. (I made them a southern American classic. Sweet potato pie 🥧 😋) they liked it tho, there's lots of sweet potato desserts in Japan too 😋
He more than likely did know more. English is a compulsory, as in REQUIRED, class in Japan starting in grade three. I would be shocked if he didn't retain at least some of it.
@@kamilareeder1493 My host sister was pretty cool with the food , she'd ask us to give her a little bit so she can get used to it. She made me an awesome dish before she left.
Oh Jessica! This was a whole ordeal. This commercial was supposed to be a lot more cooler than this simple Campbell's soup. But the girls got detained coming to Japan, and it was an entire mess. So they were behind schedule, and had to rush with this.
26:55 “Finally you have personality” like what the hell, everyone has personality. Just because you are not expressive or extroverted doesn’t mean you don’t have personality!!! 🙄 personality is nothing more than your characteristics as a person. You can be quiet and reserved and have your own unique personality. I really despise this so called “juries”.
that's probably my number one pet peeve w ANTM. i mean it's all bad but the "no personality" card is so annoying and just a random excuse to throw out if they plan on getting rid of someone and need a valid "reason". you can have a personality when cameras arent rolling too. some ppl dont show how they are if they're not comfortable either.
They’ll tell a girl she needs more personality but then tell another to dull it down. Like Tacara (I know I’m spelling it wrong) she has an amazing personality and they told her to dial it back and then eliminated her when she did. The broke her spirit and eliminated her for it.
No. Being HELD BACK is not a personality learn reality and actually respect people as a THINKING living being and not try to sell their SUFFERING as some kind of "personality"
I'm 100% sure Tyra didn't actually forget, she just did it to mess with Nicole how forgettable she is, the effect this could have had on her self confidence, just disgusting.
I remember that part too. It was so disgusting and mean. Tyra is the ultimate mean girl. Nicole didn’t deserve to be talked to like that. I remember being shocked at her behavior.
@@teijaflink2226 she probably only did that bc they HAD to send someone home and couldnt send yaya yet bc they love picking on her too much so they chose someone random w a random excuse.
They definitely just made the girls do the umeboshi commercial to humiliate them, I feel like if they weren't hoping for strong reactions to eating the product they wouldn't have made them read lines like "so sweet you'll swear it's candy" etc before they ate it. Setting them up to be shocked by the flavor!
@@scandisnowgirl3696 I've never tried it but that's what I've heard, very sour and salty. I feel like some of the girls might have even liked it if they'd only known what to expect!
Janice Dickinson has said repeatedly on her show “Janice Dickinson’s modeling agency“ things like, “you’re lucky we’re not on ANTM where I was forced to be the bad guy”. Even though she was quite cruel on her own show, she often took jabs at Tyra and commented how Janice’s mean girl character was all an act
This was problematic when it first aired and even moreso now. Someone would be able to taste the product before shooting the commercial. I'm also over the story arc that Yaya is overly educated and pompous. Her story line was actually quite problematic and racist if you watch the entire season. Oh early 2000s.....
21:38 the way Janice was chanting, “eat, eat, eat“, shows that all they wanted was to humiliate the girls. Very cult like. “Here drink the blood of the supermodels that have come before you”.
This episode is such a thinly veiled attempt to create “drama” for the show and humiliate the models. Not only is it impossible to learn a language in that amount of time it does feel very offensive and racist as a concept. Not to mention the the MANY problems with forcing someone to eat something unknown to them, against their will. I wish these models could finally get justice for the abuse they endured on this show.
Jessica, u are so kind. Thank you for always being loving in your critique . No one deserves to b treated this way, let alone for these reasons. We all aspire...but not to abuse.
As an American that likes umeboshi, I'M OFFENDED that they advertized something that tastes like a kalamata olive as being 'sweet as candy'. Clearly the English add was written by someone who had never tasted an Asian pickled plum.
This full episode I think had a lot of behind the scenes drama. In one of Jay’s chats this was the episode where the models got stuck in customs for days because customs thought the show was human trafficking the women. So they had to fly them to Guam (or other US territory) then back to Japan. In Amanda’s confessional producers had her be like “the flight was so long we had to change our clothes!” Meanwhile, I think Jay had scheduled a lavish location to do a cover girl shoot but because the day got missed due to customs, he had like a day to find a location and a concept so that’s why we ended up with this rickety soup commercial on a staircase. It was discussed in the season 3 Jay’s chat and on Anne’s Oliver Twixt chat I think
I’m so proud of YaYa!! She is an amazing actress and she’s done some notable movies and shows. It goes to show that you don’t have to let ANYBODY EVER dim your light! They tried so much but she still shined through everything!✨💜
"I can barely speak English and you want me to speak Japanese?!?!?" 😂 I can relate too much to this 🤭 Edit: honestly, they should have someone else reading the script to the girls so they could have at least an idea of how it's supposed to sound...
My cousin was part of a Campbell's commercial about 8 years ago.... So, for him, they had a person on the street section so they let people go up, have a bite (Which they swallowed) and say anything that came to mind. He got $1,500 for saying one line. But they also got to watch some of the actors doing their part of the commercial. And yes, after each take they spit the food out. Another cousin of mine is a director for commercials and he said any time there's a food /drink product, the actors spit out after each take. Otherwise it can create dietary or health issues.
I've heard the phrase "spit take" which I'm pretty sure comes from eating food on camera but spitting it out after the director calls cut. Food network chef Giada spits out all the food she cooks on camera to keep in shape, because she cooks a lot carbs. It's really not as deep as the judges make it.
You definitely don’t have to swallow the food on commercials, half of it isn’t real food. Also most models are on a strict diet that wouldn’t allow them to swallow the food multiple times.
22:07 I learn Japanese quite a lot, and I think he said 申し訳ない (read as Moushiwakenai), which translates to 'I'm sorry'. Kinda shows that even he wasn't comfortable doing all that, but again I could be wrong.
As someone with taste hypersensitivity, I feel for Yaya. I have the worst gag reflex when I have tried unpleasant foods (mainly vinegar based) . Force feeding is such a demented form of abuse.
That Umeboshi-commercial was like some strange sorority initiation party-game where the members get to watch the applicants do something disgusting. (Is she really gonna eat it? I can't believe it! She's gonna do it! Oh wow! I can't believe she ate it, that's so disgusting! And so on... Yaya, sorry, you failed the test and have offended our statutes and the proud traditions of Alpha Nu Theta Alpha. We just don't think you belong in our sorority.
Ooooh. I was expecting that the shoot was more to do with promoting Campbell's through ANTM than actually using the contestants for a serious commercial (like i'm not very up on the fashion and modelling world so i have no idea if those shoots and stuff were actually used XD)
I wouldn’t be surprised if the producers and Jay lied and the director does speak English and they just wanted to challenge the girls. He was smiling way too hard when he came out 😂
The girls were detained at the airport because the Japanese police thought they were sexual workers so they went to an American territory Guam and stayed for 3 days, this messed up their shooting schedule so they came up with this commercial
The last product was the fake kente hat and they wanted her to choose that hat instead she chose the cow girl hat I really felt like Tyra was jealous of yaya
They put that hat in there thinking she would pick it and would have made an issue of it if she picked it then they also made an issue of it that she didn’t pick it. Once there was a certain narrative about a girl she just could do no right.
"You're really good in English but the Japanese..." damn it's almost like she doesn't speak it LMAO Also saying it's offensive to not like a food is ridiculous💀especially something that's known to be an acquired sort of taste This entire thing was 100000% just to set the girls up lol
On the rewatch podcast by Dance Moms Kelly and Christie, they often talk about how they couldn't "break the fourth wall" when they were talking about things like acknowledging they were in a show and that's why they had studios out there purposefully coming to competitions to beat them and when they knew something was a producer setup. I would guess similar rules applied on ANTM.
Here’s what makes me mad about the umeboshi part… ITS A SIDE DISH MEANT TO BE EATEN WITH THE MAIN COURSE TO BALANCE THE TASTE. It’s a palate cleanser but why would ANTM do a modicum of research when humiliation is cheaper… they wanna act offended at the “disrespect” of spitting it out even it’s literally set up to illicit that response Side note: I’ve done a lot of commercials and shoots… some for food and drink… you do NOT eat the food or drink it otherwise you’ll end up ruining the presentation. If anything, if they want an eating shot you’re given… gum or candy, water if you’re drinking
Why do these commercial scripts always sound like they came from the dawn of tv advertising, in the 50's. It's like they instruct the writers "give us your most generic shot!"
The only American actor I can think of that had to speak a language they didn't know for filming was Lee Van Cleef. He acted in spaghetti westerns but didn't want to be dubbed over, so he spoke a whole script he didn't understand since he didn't speak a lick of Italian lol. But he had months to learn his lines and as many takes as it took to get them right.
Jessica, you skipped Nicole's evaluation. 😆 Man, everyone is forgetting Nicole today. Side note, she did that to Nicole on purpose, I believe. I mean they expect us to believe on the same episode, they forgot Nicole TWICE???
normally jessica doesnt show the whole part of the episode that's why. just the shoots + who goes home during panel. was def not on purpose but she pinned her comment since others told her bout that ruthless part so she;s gonna make another video.
They asked them to eat a product without caring about whether or not they have allergies to a certain ingredient or more. Like certain food and beverages could be hazardous for anyone with allergies.
The way everyone speaks down to the Japanese people and talks about Japan like its below them always makes me feel weird. It happens every time they are in a foreign place especially when its asian
Never had to eat/drink the food for a commercial, it messes with continuity among other things. I’ve never had to do a cold read in a foreign language - I had a commercial audition in Japanese once, I got the script and an audio pronunciation guide well in advance.
I watched an interview of Lisa Damato about her experience on ANTM granted it was only one person’s perspective, but she said they didn’t provide food for the models. They were made to work extremely long hours without any break sometimes deprived of water along with food. It’s a miracle anybody got through any of the seasons She also spoke about the psychological questions and for lack of a better word testing they did prior to shooting some that didn’t “pass” were still allowed on I stand firm in my belief that the show was never to help excel careers of beginner models. It was solely to exploit create drama and gain views to line their pockets and no they were not paid for shoots from what I gather. That in itself speaks volumes.
Hi, I used to work as a model in Tokyo, so about your last question: Yes, we were supposed to eat food when we were shooting a food-commercial. But we never swallowed it and just took one small bite. Plus, we were able to decide what we wanted to eat. Also, they asked our managements about food we didn't like one day in advance. I'm a huge fan of umeboshi, but I know that many foreign people don't like it - and Japanese people are aware of that, too. So most Japanese wouldn't force you to eat umeboshi in the first place.
I speak fluent Japanese and do interpretation for my job from English to Japanese and from the clips I see in this video the intepretor seems to have taken some liberties with her translation 🤣
ON GOD I just got to the part where they have to just eat the umeboshi without even warning these girls that it's incredibly sour, like literally this is just a batsu-game, a punishment-game, ANTM literally just pulled out a comedy segment from Japanese variety TV and sicced it on these poor girls like it was a legitimate "test" these people need to explode OML
Here in Brazil, sometimes we do have tô it the product. McDonalds, for example, we have to eat both in the test and during shooting. Some have fake food or some sort of substitute, but most we don't really eat anything, just act. Beer commercial, which are the most common for us as actors to book, it's illegal to be shown in a commercial drinking. There can be no drinking on alcohol on commercials.
It’s the fact that they wanted them to be fluent in it lol they set these girls up every single photoshoot/challenge/elimination. I remember the episode where that one girls friend passed away and the very next photoshoot was them being in a grave….that’s not a coincidence.
I was in a play once where some of my lines were in a language I didn't speak. The director brought in someone who did speak it fluently to work with me on those lines and coach me through the pronunciation. He gave me (and the one other actor who also had lines in that language) a total of five hours of coaching (1 hour a day for five days) between the two of us actors it was a total of seven lines we had to learn. At the end of our time with him we were at a passible level of saying those specific lines in the language we didn't know. He expressed that he was impressed with us. Compare that to this situation. These girls got, what? a half hour to an hour to practice without anyone coaching them on how to pronounce the words? ANTM isn't here to give these girls experience as a model, it's here to humiliate them for views.
Oh puh-lease, Tyra & co. Sometimes it's not even real food in commercials. It has added colouring, added artificial texture, lots of things that aren't edible.
I was expecting you to give your take on how Tyra for forgetting Nicole before deliberation. That whole episode was about forgetting Nicole which was flat out cold.
I can’t even get through watching ANTM because how they treat the girls like cattle. When I was a kid watching this I thought it was normal treatment. That they were just being teachers but turned out to be bullies. It’s horrible how they got away with it.
Except, they don't tell her what was in it. What if someone had an unknown allergen and had a reaction?!? It surprises me they didn't tell them what is in the product to play it safe
So I am guessing this would NOT be how a typical commercial shoot would go, for a professional model doing a serious and professional shoot for a client? That they wouldn't just be expected to show up in a kimono and bright makeup, speak perfectly fluent Japanese and do a commercial for soup? And again, as with MANY of Tyra's photo/film shoots...this probably IS NOT something that would be accepted in a professional portfolio for the girls to show later to REAL clients, yes? This was just done to make them look ridiculous and humiliate them and have the judges criticize them? Wouldn't a model have to SIGN OFF on something like this? Especially if she DIDN'T know the language she was expected to speak perfectly in 30 minutes?
Umeboshi is such a plant/trick. It's delishes when used as intended, its an aquired taste straight. Like sourkrout, or kimchi, its sour and salted and usually used to enhance a dish. That was such and underhanded set up. Make them eat a sour plum onigiri or something.
After watching several of these videos in a row, it kinda stands out to me that especially the darker skinned/black women are being called angry, aggressive and rude for no reason or for the slightest hint of self-respect. If they stand up for themselves of others in any way they are told to be humble. It happens to the white models too, but there are a lot more white models each season, so it stands out less.
This commercial was basically last minute because of the flight issue. Security came and got the girls. After they were all let go and time was taken away. They had to think of this and cancel the photoshoot they had. I'll give them a pass because of the issue everyone had. No one expected it and they tried something. Maybe they could had done something else that was more easy.
I watched recent interviews of the contestants from this season. FYI the "commercial production" looks very shabby because it was put together very last minute. The original concept had to be scrapped because the cast had some issues entering Japan, got detained in immigration being suspected as prostitutes/trafficking and had to sort them out before actually arriving in Japan and doing that commercial days later. So they couldn't do the original production. The "kimono" the girls are wearing are from the hotel rooms so they didn't even have proper wardrobe for this commercial.

Wow! They did this literally for the drama.
They always set them up for failure. That's all there's to it.
Yeah ! I was introduced to umeboshi by eating it in an onigiri! I liked it so much that now I can eat it on its own but like it took me a year and half to try it on its own for the first time .
You know what I think is insulting to Japanese people? Having these girls have half an hour to learn to speak an ad script in Japanese.
Well, it can't be TOO INSULTING if you have a non English speaking NATIVE JAPANESE MAN DIRECTING IT!
😭🤣😭🤣😭🤣
Insulting is a stretch lol japanese people were so kind to me when i would use my little translator and try to speak to them with my horrible japanese
This is how I felt
No surprise and no offense that here she spit it out
It's also usually eaten with rice, right? Because it's so pungent
I kinda like it.. but if I had never had anything like that before, I’d have a big reaction!

No, not bc of documents, bc of Ann and Eva. Nicole confirms this, Amanda, etc. They were all detained, sent back to Guam and then flew back again.

Somebody could've had an allergic reaction to that food, and nobody on production would bat an eye. 🙄 How is someone supposed to just eat a product without any information or warning??? The lengths they go to just for gaslighting.
People overuse the word gaslight so much. Nothing against you it's just a peeve of mine because alot of times people use it incorrectly
I thought about this too, what if someone is allergic.
That's what I was thinking. This show could've been on the hook if someone went into anaphylactic shock & got hurt, or even died.
@@addie-eileenpaige6460 actually they wouldn't be, they sign all this paperwork before filming that they can't sue if they are hurt in any way or death. Lol the lengths this channel will go to, to grasp for things to be offended by. Cope.
The funny thing is that Yaya is, now, a successful actress
She’s amazing! I adore her in Chicago Med
She definitely got the last laugh!
And probably knows exactly how bullshit the "no spitting out food you're marketing" crap is. They ALWAYS spit out food between takes to avoid getting sick.
No wonder I recognized her!
I have always hated those episodes (even when I was a kid) where they forced the girls to speak in a language they actually didn't know and made fun of them.
Then when they get the language right, they nitpick it like they did with Amanda.
Exactly. Well said! 👍🏾
Some competition shows are like "you did good but as we get further we need to be more picky and we think this other person did a little bit better"
ANTM is like "hey i know you made it to the top 4 but you have no skill, your personality is bad, also you have identity issues and i hate you."
@@addie-eileenpaige6460 Exactly. They just wanted to be cruel and "entertaining." None of this was about industry standards. They were bullies.
Or at the very least, they could put ear pieces in their ears & have the girls repeat after someone in their ear.
they were also constantly pointing out her age and she was ONLY 26 LIKE WTF
fun fact: norelle went back to japan after the show and lived there for awhile as a real model!!

YaYa is/was one my favorites! She’s truly amazing ❤
I was wondering if anyone was going to mention Yaya actually became an actress so by now she knows all of this was bs
She's been in a few movies including big movies. She was in The Butler with Forest Whitaker and Oprah, she played the girlfriend that they didn't like. She's quite the dramatic actress, very talented indeed.
Eh. She came as a client at a high-end designer store where I worked for an appointment…she came in saying ‘don’t you know who I am?’…not a good look.
Bullies 🤬
Yes, it's bullying!
I wish Yaya would have told TYRA "you come eat this umaboshi" 😂
Would it have been better if she ate it, then threw up? 🤔

What if one of them had anaphylaxis? This show could've been liable if one of the girls got hurt or dead!
Yeah that’s so true! I get angry all of over again watching the clips. I’m so glad YaYa came out on top and is a huge success today 💜🙌🏽
Yeah, what if one of them has food allergies??!! This show could've been liable if someone got hurt, or even dead!
Me, too.
In Amanda’s confessional producers had her be like “the flight was so long we had to change our clothes!”
Meanwhile, I think Jay had scheduled a lavish location to do a cover girl shoot but because the day got missed due to customs, he had like a day to find a location and a concept so that’s why we ended up with this rickety soup commercial on a staircase.

The whole purpose of this challenge was to create drama for the show, it was never a fair shoot for them.
You definitely don’t have to swallow the food on commercials, half of it isn’t real food. Also most models are on a strict diet that wouldn’t allow them to swallow the food multiple times.
I am a very picky eater, especially when it comes to food textures.
I would not have spat out the food as gracefully as she did😂

Mr. Jay said he had throw this shoot together with no budget since the girls were detained in Guam.
He was smiling way too hard when he came out 😂
I KNEW IT!!!
The girls were detained at the airport because the Japanese police thought they were sexual workers so they went to an American territory Guam and stayed for 3 days, this messed up their shooting schedule so they came up with this commercial
Actors don't eat the food when filming commercials, they are spitting it out!!! The gaslighting in this show I swear
The last product was the fake kente hat and they wanted her to choose that hat instead she chose the cow girl hat I really felt like Tyra was jealous of yaya
Even back when I was 18 watching this, I could feel that. Tyra seemed intimidated by strong black females. I think it made her feel insecure
They put that hat in there thinking she would pick it and would have made an issue of it if she picked it then they also made an issue of it that she didn’t pick it. Once there was a certain narrative about a girl she just could do no right.
Your commentary is always priceless. I would happily watch you react to every ANTM episode ever!

The more I rewatch this show the less respect I have for Tyra and the more I see how she really set girls up for failure for ratings
It's not all tyra ken mock too
M'y Yaya Girl she really survive during the judges they really mean towards her for no reason
Why couldn't they give them a script written phonetically? Oh yeah, that's too easy.
Here’s what makes me mad about the umeboshi part… ITS A SIDE DISH MEANT TO BE EATEN WITH THE MAIN COURSE TO BALANCE THE TASTE. It’s a palate cleanser but why would ANTM do a modicum of research when humiliation is cheaper… they wanna act offended at the “disrespect” of spitting it out even it’s literally set up to illicit that response
Side note: I’ve done a lot of commercials and shoots… some for food and drink… you do NOT eat the food or drink it otherwise you’ll end up ruining the presentation. If anything, if they want an eating shot you’re given… gum or candy, water if you’re drinking
Why do these commercial scripts always sound like they came from the dawn of tv advertising, in the 50's. It's like they instruct the writers "give us your most generic shot!"
I've been studying Spanish for a year, and I wouldn't be comfortable doing anything like this in Spanish. It surely wouldn't sound fluent. 😂😂
Yaya's delivery of "PACKED" is just hilarious 😂
This is disgusting that they were laughing at them. All of this for ratings too. How humiliating. They knew they didn’t know Japanese. SMH

This whole episode is just crazy. I remember watching it when it came out. I can’t believe I used to even watch this show when I was younger.
Jessica: Whoever came up with this concept hates soup and the girls
Me: Food in general, the girls AND Japan, apparently
I watched an interview of Lisa Damato about her experience on ANTM granted it was only one person’s perspective, but she said they didn’t provide food for the models. They were made to work extremely long hours without any break sometimes deprived of water along with food. It’s a miracle anybody got through any of the seasons
She also spoke about the psychological questions and for lack of a better word testing they did prior to shooting some that didn’t “pass” were still allowed on I stand firm in my belief that the show was never to help excel careers of beginner models.
Isn’t umeboshi like a topping. You don’t typically eat it by itself because it’s so strong 😭
Here in Brazil, sometimes we do have tô it the product. McDonalds, for example, we have to eat both in the test and during shooting. Some have fake food or some sort of substitute, but most we don't really eat anything, just act. Tyra imitating Ann’s Japanese has to be the funniest thing I have ever seen. On replay 😂😂😂😂25:33

Umeboshi is meant to be eaten with rice. It’s also good along with drinking sake. They are NOT sweet. 😬
This is so funny considering the model hardly ever actually eats the food. They usually spit it out bc they’re doing multiple takes.
I can't believe how blind sided I was when this show came out. I used to love it and loved Tyra. Boy oh boy! She's terrible. Anything for money.
"Another commercial... Ya Allah.. 😩" 😂
"Just send someone home, khalas"
I love it when you pepper in Arabic hahahaha❤
This commercial was basically last minute because of the flight issue. Security came and got the girls. After they were all let go and time was taken away. They had to think of this and cancel the photoshoot they had. I'll give them a pass because of the issue everyone had. No one expected it and they tried something. Maybe they could had done something else that was more easy.
Learn this super hard language in 30 mins and when you don’t accomplish it, it’s all your fault. Wild 😂
Jessica, your Japanese sounds amazing! Please keep learning it! 💜🦊
