  • We’ve all seen the headlines: inflation is on the rise, food prices are soaring, rents are out of control, and wages are stagnant. For established professionals, riding the waves of economic uncertainty is a bit more manageable. For university students with limited resources, this uncertainty can mean deciding to pay rent or buy textbooks. Many students are just one unforeseen expense away from deciding between continuing their education or having to find work just to scrape by.
During his 13 years as Dean of UCalgary Law (and his 11 years at Western University Law School before that), Ian Holloway has seen the need for student emergency funds grow exponentially. The student who had to travel overseas on short notice to care for an ageing parent in the middle of the semester, the student who needed an emergency MRI to avoid a year’s wait for a critical diagnosis, or the student who was forced to seek new living accommodations mid-year due to soaring rent. Ian knows firsthand how crucial it is for the faculty to have a pool of dedicated funds available to respond quickly to student emergencies - to allow students to get their lives back on track.
Inspired by a long-time friend and supporter of the law school, the Student Emergency Fund in the Faculty of Law - In honour of Ian Holloway will build on Ian’s remarkable 24-year legacy of supporting students in need. In fact, Ian has had the longest tenure of any Law dean in North America! An achievement that will be difficult to surpass and one we are hoping you will help commemorate by supporting this important initiative in Ian’s honour.
